Obituary Preview: Dorothea “Dottie” Maxine Fenimore Mack, 94, of Lake Jackson, Texas, passed away on Monday, October 5, 2020. Dottie was born in a stone house in Peru, Iowa to the late Brian and Leona Fenimore.

Dottie met and married the love of her life, Gene Mack, on May 18, 1944. Together they had two wonderful daughters, Vickie and Teresa. She taught Sunday School at First Christian Church in Truro, Iowa and First Methodist Church in Wheeler, Texas. She belonged to the Eastern Stars and assisted with the Rainbow girls. Dottie was a member of the Ladies VFW auxiliary for 33 years. Dottie also liked to serve her community by volunteering at the Borger Hospital working in the gift shop, Helping Hands, the Borger Community Center and the Hutchinson County Museum.

Dottie and Gene began square dancing in 1960, holding many offices in the Panhandle Square Dance Association. She was and excellent seamstress beginning when she would make pinafores and dresses for her daughters; and later making square dance dresses. Dottie also was a master bridge player. Preceding her in death are her husband, Walter Franklin Caudill; daughter, Lorraine Grace Caudill, birth parents, Arthur and Grace (Tomlinson) Silliman; Nurturing parents, Sylvester and Eletha (Silliman) Clifton 'Momma and Papa'; son-in-law, Roy Arthur Grindstaff I 'Budd'; grandson Justin Caudill; great granddaughter Baily Williams; Six brothers, Charles 'Johnnie' (Lydia) Silliman; William (Mammie) Silliman; Clair (Marjorie) Silliman; Fred (Elva) Silliman; Cladue (Jessie) Silliman; Harold (Marge) Silliman; Three sisters, Mary Clifton (Wayne) Nuzum; Ellah Silliman Mc Donald; and Edna 'Toots' Silliman (Bruce) Follman.

Grace had a challenging beginning in life. Grace and her twin brother Harold were born the eighth and ninth children in their family. They arrived two months prematurely. Their mother Grace died three days later due to complications of child birth. Grace weighed 2 pounds and Harold weighed 2 1/2 pounds. Arthur, with seven children at home, sought help from his family in Iowa and transported Grace and Harold from North Dakota to Iowa in shoe boxes.

Grace was raised by Arthur's sister and her husband Eletha and Sylvester Clifton. Harold was raised by Arthur's parents Charles and Mary Silliman all of Peru, Iowa. Grace knew the Cliftons as 'Momma and Pappa'. She adored her sister Mary Clifton. Her father Arthur visited his 'Iowa children' as often as work and children in North Dakota allowed. Arthur remained unmarried until his death.

Grace grew up loving farm and domestic life. She married Walter Franklin Caudill September 8, 1943 in Winterset, Iowa. The maid of honor was Walter's sister and Grace's best friend Esther Caudill Smith. Donald Smith, Esther's husband, was Walter's best man.

Grace and Walter had six children Loris, Loren, Loyd, Lorraine, Lola and Lorrinda. Grace’s greatest joy on earth was her family. Grace's greatest passion in life was the spiritual condition of her family and friends. Grace accepted Jesus into her heart while listening to a Christian radio broadcast in her teen years. Grace lead her parents, the Clifton's, to Jesus in the years that followed. Grace and Walter saw all their children come to salvation in Jesus during the child rearing years. The Caudill's were loving members of three churches over the years, St. Charles Christian Church, St. Charles Community Church and Wintetset Foursquare Church where the children grew up under the ministry of the beloved pastors Charles and Barbara Updike.

Grace was famous for her hospitality, tea parties, and especially for her raisin filled cookies. She loved antiques and decorating. After her children were raised she worked several years as a home health aid for Earlham Care. She loved her clients and provided countless goodies for their enjoyment.

Travel was a pleasure. Grace kept a journal of every trip. She logged each stop, including in the record a description of the cuisine, the decor, and the cost of every transaction.

As health failed, Grace lived the last eight years of her life with daughters in Indiana and Wisconsin. Even then, she participated in church and family activities.

Grace is survived by her children, Loris Grindstaff of Mt.Vernon, Ohio; Loren Caudill of Peru, Iowa; Loyd (Dreama) Caudill of Gallion, Ohio; Lola (Bruce) Borders of Jasonville, Indiana; and Lorrinda (Robert) Ertl of Racine, Wisconsin.

Following her marriage she stayed at home to raise her family and be a homemaker.

Donola was a member of Truro Congregational UCC Church and was a member of the Jolly Fu ladies group at the church. She enjoyed her flower garden and cooking.

Joan graduated from Truro High School, now consolidated as Interstate 35 School District. Soon after high school, Joan was united in marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Richard Eugene Fenimore on September 12, 1948 at Truro, Iowa, and three children, Kathy, Rick and Randy blessed this union. Joan worked at several insurance companies in various supervisory related capacities prior to her retirement. In retirement, she was able to pursue many interests such as learning to play golf, bowling leagues and various bridge clubs through the years. Her first love was the time she was able to spend with her family. She was the nucleus that brought the family together for numerous family reunions. She and Dick took their children on many family vacations. As their children grew up and had families; they started a tradition for their 50th anniversary to take all the family to Branson. Everyone loved it and has become a family tradition spanning nearly seventeen years. She enjoyed crafts, ceramics, needlework, counted cross stitch; and was known as a lady with a green thumb. She made quilts for each of her children and a needlepoint print for all of her grandchildren. She treasured the time she spent playing with the grand/great grandchildren and teaching them how to be “expert” card players and future counted cross stitchers!!

During the last few years, she lived a full life at Madison Square in Winterset. She eventually become known as the unofficial activity events coordinator at Madison Square! She loved her Madison Square family very much.

The relatives who preceded Joan in death were her parents; husband, Richard Eugene Fenimore; brother, Gene Carlson.

Joan leaves to cherish her memory her children, Kathleen Jo (David) Arzani of De Soto, IA; Rick (Calanne) Fenimore of Truro, IA and Randy (Peggy) Fenimore of Austin, TX; 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Marjorie Reed of Winterset, IA, brother-in-law, Ronald (Fran) Fenimore of Blair, NE, brother-in-law, Vic (Marilyn) Fenimore of Las Vegas, NV as well as other relatives and many friends. Interment and memorial service will be held Tuesday December 29th 2015. Interment is 2:00 P.M. at Iowa Veteran's Cemetery in Van Meter with the Memorial Service at 2:30, at the Van Meter Veteran's Reception Center, Van Meter, Iowa
