Constance Sue "Connie" Riley - November 21, 1948 - April 06, 2024

Departed: 04/06/2024 (Denver)
Obituary Preview: Constance “Connie” Sue Fisher Riley was born in Waterloo, Iowa on November 21, 1948, to Milton and Shirlee Fisher. She grew up on the family farm outside Denver and graduated from Denver High School in 1966. She met the love of her live and true soulmate Glenn Riley, and they were united in marriage on February 24, 1968, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Denver, Iowa. While Glenn served in the Army from 1967-1971, Connie continued to work in Iowa, and they lived in Sierra Vista, Arizona for one year. Then Glenn finished his enlistment in Germany, and they moved to a house that they added on to outside of Denver and had two children, Nathaniel and Natasha. They built a beautiful home known as the house on the hill in Denver in 1986 and this home was full of love and the true place that Tasha and Nate’s friends wanted to come. Talks at the kitchen table and meals every night were essential to discuss the day. As a devoted mother, there wasn’t a school event that Connie and Glenn did not attend for their kids. Connie worked as an administrative assistant in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area, with the last 10 years being at the UAW Local 838 until they moved to Graceville, Florida in 2004. She worked hard and always answered the phone in her beautiful voice.
Connie is known for her true beauty and never went anywhere without full make-up and being glamorous, and no one looked better in high heels and business suits. When Connie entered a room, she was confident and truly lit up the room. More people needed a Connie Riley in their life. Connie loved family gatherings and cooked tirelessly for big gatherings full of laughter, and loved decorating for every holiday. She especially loved Halloween and would dress up every year, including her precious dog, Keats. She loved greeting all the kids at the door. Not only that, but she was proud of the monstrous pumpkins Glenn grew, and they were carved and lit up the block. Connie went over the top and captured photos for every birthday and event, and we are so thankful for all these treasures that will live in our hearts forever. She was the organizer, but stubborn (Fisher side), and could shop until she dropped and wouldn’t buy without a coupon, but when she wanted something nice, and it was quality, she bought it. She loved cheering and seeing her kids in their activities, including both kids in band and Tasha in cheerleading and tumbling, but her absolute favorite was watching her son Nate (Punky) play baseball. Connie was the true organizer of the Denver Rockies baseball team that Glenn started and coached, and it was a big part of her life. She impacted so many people through this and the memories will continue.
She organized a beautiful wedding for her daughter Natasha and son-in-law Dave in 1998 at St. John Lutheran, and it was a true celebration with butterflies being released and 25 years later it is a celebration that people still talk about. Not only that, but she was very proud of Natasha being a teacher and always told that to others. She was so happy of her son Nate’s hard work at Ace hardware as a project manager and was so excited he recently moved to Tampa to be closer. In addition, Connie was very proud of her two grandchildren, Selena and Sebastian, and loved searching for shells and doing Selena’s nails. Some of the best memories are the countless summer vacations at the beach with the whole family, where we would laugh so hard that we would cry. We all loved seafood, and we had meals that were grand. She had a collection of shells and would always send them with notes in her beautiful handwriting. Connie was also known for her love of her miniature bull terriers and all animals, the family cookbooks she created, and her homemade amaretto and strawberry jam. She loved watching the birds at their home and going on gator rides with the dogs and working in the garden. She took pride in her flowers and her cooking. Connie regularly gathered pecans on their property and sent them to all her family and friends. If you ever received one of Connie’s Christmas 2-3 page letters, they were one of a kind and people looked forward to reading them every year. A recent highlight was the visit with the entire family at her granddaughter Selena’s graduation party last May, and Connie loved being there for her dance and baton recital. She watched that countless times.
Connie leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Connie is survived by her loving husband Glenn of 56 years of Graceville, Florida and her children Natasha (David) Cooper of Indianola, Iowa and son, Nathaniel Riley of Tampa, Florida as well as her two grandchildren, Selena and Sebastian Cooper. She is also survived by her three sisters, Sandy Perrett, Candy Brown, and Cindy (Steve) Lovell. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Shirlee and Milton Fisher, and she is now reunited with them in heaven. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver and for an hour prior to the funeral at the church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 15, at St. John Lutheran Church in Denver with Rev. Larry Feldt officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo. She was a dedicated Caregiver to Bob for twenty-three years and was always ready to lend a helping hand to family and friends.

Dr. Kenneth Dean McMains - June 05, 1943 - August 19, 2023

Departed: 08/19/2023 (Denver)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Kenneth Dean McMains, 80, of Denver, Iowa, passed away Saturday, August 19, 2023 at UnityPoint Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, surrounded by his beloved family members. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, August 27 from 1 - 5 pm at the American Legion Hall; 161 E. Main St, Denver, Iowa 50622. A short program and military rites will be performed at 1:00pm.
Ken was born on June 5th, 1943 in Oskaloosa, IA., the son of Esther Marguerite (Butler) and Forrest Carl Knapp. His big brother and protector is Mel McMains. Being sharecroppers, the family moved often. They resided in Barnes City, Waterloo, Finchford and the Shell Rock areas.
In 1961, Ken graduated from East High School in Waterloo and immediately joined the Navy, serving for six years. This is where his path to medicine began.
He trained in California at San Diego, Point Mugu, and Oakland. His training included running an ER and Dispensary then graduating in Neuropsychiatry. He was stationed on the island of Guam where he was Head Corpsman in the military hospital providing psychiatric care and periodic emergency room care. The facility was the only locked unit serving military personnel in the South Pacific. He had additional responsibilities to travel by boat through the Mariana Islands to collect and treat mentally ill citizens. He credits the Navy for giving him direction and finding his passion and purpose in life.
To become a medical doctor, Ken needed 15 additional years of education and clinical experience. He attended the University of Northern Iowa for his undergraduate degree, the University of Guadalajara for medical school, Rush University in Chicago for his residency, and Waterloo Family Practice for his specialty.
For 43 years, Ken provided care to patients through the Denver Family Practice Clinic and Allen Occupational Health. He grew The Denver Family Practice Clinic into four locations for care and had multiple partners in providing that care. Occupational Health grew from having one nurse to assist while sharing a room in the Emergency Department to having multiple locations and a large staff of medical providers to meet the needs of patients from Northeast Iowa. As his health declined, he retired at the age of 76.
His leadership, teaching, and clinical skills served him well through life. In conjunction with his practice, he was an adjunct professor with the University of Iowa in training occupational medicine residents within his clinic. Physicians from the Waterloo Family Practice program and first year university medical students (MECCO) did rotations through his clinic for observation and training. He was Chairman of the Board for the University of Iowa Residency Program in recruiting, selecting and evaluating physicians in residency. He served on the board for the Central States Occupational and Environmental Medicine Association (CSOEMA).
When not practicing medicine, Ken loved spending time outdoors around his property, working on crossword puzzles, keeping up with current events and reading the latest medical research. He also loved spending time with family, whether it be sitting around the table playing cards, catching up with his children and grandchildren, or sharing fascinating stories. After retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling the country in their RV to see their children and grandchildren. He especially looked forward to online weekly card games with his children playing Up and Down the River.
Ken was preceded in life by his mother, Esther and stepfather Forrest Knapp. He is survived by his older brother, Melvin (Kathy) McMains and their daughters Kimberly (Mark) Reesink and Lindsay (Carson) Williams; his ex-wife Louise (Eriksen) McMains of 24 years; his wife Cristina ‘Tina’ Johari of 23 years; daughters Melissa (Jason) Hollis; Sarah (Rob) Sablich and daughters Danielle (Devin) Wreck, Gina, Lexi and Tori and great granddaughter Ariana; Stephanie McMains (Keith Gazzolo) and daughter Ronin; Roshia Johari (Rick McGinnis) and children Nathaniel, Qayden, Sarina, Naomi and Gabriel; Johann (Gina) Johari and children Qellen, Landon and Calista; Father-in-law and Mother-in-law Jim and Mary Gamerdinger; Brother in Laws: Ted (Angie) Gamerdinger; Tim (Lori) Gamerdinger; Tony (Kerri) Gamerdinger; Terry (Judy Gamerdinger; Tom (Sharri) Gamerdinger; Jon (Dawn) Gamerdinger; Jamie (Jen) Gamerdinger; Sister-in-Laws: Teresa (Rick) Deardoff; Lisa (Larry) Spencer; Julie (Brian) Rottinghaus; Susie (Mike) Scott; and 71 nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to his friends and colleagues at UnityPoint Hospital for the care and compassion he received. Special thanks to Ted Gamerdinger for his priceless assistance and support.
