Gladys Carol Loehnis - September 23, 1937 - March 30, 2024

Departed: 03/30/2024 (Yale)
Obituary Preview: Gladys Carol Loehnis, 86, a beloved mother of six, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2024.
In 1937, Gladys was born in Aurora, Illinois, to the late Bernice and Edward. As a young child, she moved to Detroit, where she attended Catholic school with her brothers, Donald (Fuhui Yao) and Kenneth (Mari). Growing up, she developed a love for all things musical: playing the piano, singing in the choir, attending concerts, and going to the dance halls in Detroit. In her high school years, she met the love of her life. She was a devoted wife to her late husband, Almer “Chub” Loehnis, a marine veteran. Gladys cherished their love for each other and their memories together.
Gladys was a dedicated mother to her six children, Jeanne (Ronald), Elizabeth, Matthew, Wendy (Jon), Jennifer (Daniel), and Jessica (Gregory). She always found time to take them to the beach, be their taxi driver, or cheer them on from the sidelines.
A lifelong Catholic, she found solace and strength in her faith, sharing her blessings by volunteering at Assumption Grotto church and school, where her kindness touched the lives of many. To the schoolchildren, she was known as the lunch lady. She held numerous positions in the PTG and regularly helped out at bingo, Halloween parties, the Christmas Bazaar, and the annual festival, where she made many friends, including her best friend, Helen.
As her children began to leave the nest, she worked at the Federal Reserve Bank in Detroit, where she was known as Carol. She just loved her middle name. Afterward, she worked alongside her husband and several children in the family trucking business.
Later in life, she derived great pleasure from family parties and visits where she could see her fifteen grandchildren, Alyssa (Giovanni), Jenna (Rob), Jacob, Stephanie (Jason), Amanda (Neil), Nicole, Melissa, Michelle, Katie, Alex, Sydney, Zachary, Isabelle, Nathan, and Tyler. She had four great-grandchildren, Booker, Aubrey, Michael, and Peyton. She was also a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Gladys found joy in reading, doing needlework, completing crossword puzzles, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She loved going to concerts at Pine Knob and often shared the story of when she won the dance contest on stage with the band Sha Na Na. She loved to have a cup of hot tea every morning. She was an animal lover and was known for her boundless affection for her dog, Ziggy. She had a compassionate heart and was always willing to come to someone’s aid, lend a listening ear, or just give a hug.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and compassion that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known her. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she loved and cared for.
The family will honor the memory of Gladys on Saturday, April, 27, 2024 at Holy Family Parish, Memphis. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. and mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Fr. Mark Livingston will officiate.
