William Thomas Kanta - April 23, 1938 - August 23, 2023

Departed: 08/23/2023 (Three Forks)
Obituary Preview: William Thomas Kanta (Tom) was born on April 23rd, 1938 at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital to Joseph and Mary (Ridzon) Kanta. The youngest of four children, Tom spent his childhood on the family farm on the outskirts of Bozeman. Graduating from Rosary High School in 1957, he briefly attended Montana State College before making the move to Idaho to help on his brother Joe’s farm. In 1960 Montana eventually called Tom back home where he settled in Three Forks and went to work with his brother George at Builders Products which later became the Kanta Products Block Empire that still exists today. A boy at heart, with interests of fast cars and blocks, Tom never gave up his love of farming and was seen riding in a combine from time to time.
His love of fast cars and drag racing earned him the reputation of the “man with the purple car,” capturing the attention and later the heart of Carol Knutson. The soul mates married on April 20th, 1963 and completed the all-American dream with daughters Dawn and Kimberly Jo. “Too many girls!” Which was Tom’s favorite saying in his last couple years when being surrounded by his loving caregivers.
A faithful member and supporter of the Catholic Church, Tom’s generous heart extended to his checkbook when it came to his family, friends, employees and community. Though Tom had a quiet strength about him, his blue eyes smiled and his love for his family was undeniable. His love for his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren was demonstrated at so many family gatherings where he was always photographed with a plate of food, a child and a smile, and he always had room for dessert.
As a team effort along with friends and family, Tom and Carol built a cabin on Canyon Ferry. Years of managing people and their skills at Kanta Products extended into the weekends because if you showed up expecting a leisurely weekend of boating, you were often put to work, whether you were family or not! However, the result was 60 years of cherished memories shared by all who visited the lakeside retreat.
On Wednesday, August 23rd, 2023, at 85, the Patriarch Kanta was reunited with wife Carol as he passed in his home after a full life.
He is survived by his daughters: Dawn Burgess and Kim Kanta Fink, grandchildren: Kayla (Halfdan) Galgerud, Matthew Burgess, Erika (Sam) Asay, Hailey Fink and Brigett Burgess and great grandchildren: Isabella, Nikolai, Lawson, Reuben, Roselee and Ellenor Galgerud, and many other beloved family.
His legacy lives on in the hearts of his friends, family and the masonry products that built so much in Montana and surrounding states. “Blessed are the humble, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven…” Matthew 5:3
Rosary~Wake Service will be Friday, Sept. 1, 2023 - 7pm at K & L Mortuary and Funeral Service will be Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023 - 11am at Holy Family Church. Both located in Three Forks.
A luncheon will follow graveside services in the basement of the church.
Donations can be made in his memory to Holy Family Church, Three Forks Senior Center, Three Forks Rodeo Bleacher Fund or your choice.

James Clifford Phillips - July 10, 1948 - May 23, 2023

Departed: 05/23/2023 (Three Forks)
Obituary Preview: James Clifford Phillips, 74, of Three Forks passed away suddenly on May 23 at his family cabin in the mountains above Pony. Jim was born in Three Forks to Cliff and Ruth (Colegrove) Phillips. Jim grew up on the west side of town on the edge of Buttleman’s field. He played in the woods and river bottom all day, collecting sheds and dragging stuff from the old dump to build forts. The family had a little trailer and camped often. When he was 10 years old, they bought land up the Gallatin Canyon and, until they got their cabin built, parked the trailer at the Rainbow Ranch. This was the beginning of Jim’s obsession with shed collecting. For years, Ruth would drop him between the canyon and Yellowstone Park, and he would hike the mountains, zigzagging across the hillsides, picking up sheds by himself. He also often camped and hunted sheds with his good friend, Bob Allen.
Jim enjoyed school, his classmates, and many activities. He lettered in football and track, sang in the chorus, and was on student council and annual staff. After graduation, he went to business school in Boise, Idaho where he met the love of his life, Diane Garey. They married in 1968 and settled in Three Forks. Jim first worked on the Milwaukee section and, in 1970, he went to work at the talc plant where he stayed until retirement. Jim put in his 8 hours so that he could go home and spend 8 hours doing the things that gave his life its worth—rock work, yard work, shed hunting, and spending time with family. He and Diane were fierce competitors through all their years of marriage, hosting pinochle parties with friends, playing mahjong at the library, and playing backgammon and Skip Bo at home, often with baking a rhubarb pie or completing a dreaded chore on the line.
Jim and Diane have three daughters—he loved his girls deeply and truly believed his girls could do anything boys could do. The whole family spent weekends shed hunting, camping, fishing, and working in the garden and yard. Jim didn’t do anything half-heartedly; he believed in giving any effort 110%, so the garden was huge, the rock work impressive, and the antler collection beyond belief. He built a massive pole barn where he displayed his world-class antler collection. People have come from all over the world to see the awe-inspiring display.
He also enjoyed spending time with his brother, Lee, who was 5 years younger. They both loved the outdoors and were passionate about shed collecting, regularly attending the antler auction in Jackson Hole and spending a lot of time shed hunting together.
Jim was a strong union guy, and he loved the town of Three Forks. He served his community for many years as a school board member, played league golf, grew a pumpkin patch from which preschool kids could pick their pumpkins every fall, put up spectacular Halloween and Christmas decorations, and gave out renowned Halloween treats. Besides his love for shed hunting, Jim’s other passions were his girls and his writing. He and Diane loved watching their girls play ball and run track, never missing a sporting event. He wrote different columns for the Herald throughout the years. Early on, he wrote a column for the Historical Society called “The Museum,” and later he wrote “A View from the Trail,” which he eventually published in three collections. Being devoted to walking the trail, Jim insisted that all profits from his writing go to the Headwaters Trail System. He sold his books at farmers market in Three Forks, Manhattan, and Bozeman.
When it came to his family, Jim wore his heart on his sleeve. In 55 years of marriage, he never forgot to get Diane an anniversary or birthday card, and he was a thoughtful gift-giver to his kids and grandkids. After the girls graduated, he missed them dearly, so he got a bulldog and named it Tippy, after a bulldog he had as a kid. Tippy captured his heart and kept him company for 12 years. Since then, Jim and Diane haven’t been without a bulldog, or two. Blossom, Skittles, and Juju followed, and their most recent bulldog “girls” are Twix and Snickers. After his morning trail walk, Jim would come home to feed his bulldogs a breakfast hotdog and spend some quality time with them on the couch before writing in his diary. As an avid writer, Jim kept a diary his entire adult life. He also logged shed counts after hiking trips, recorded yearly garden plantings, and logged all his walking and exercise biking miles. In less than 20 years, he made 3 trips around the world without leaving town, riding 50,000 miles on his exercise bike and walking over 25,000 miles on the trail system.
About 15 years ago, Jim and Diane built a cabin up behind Pony. They spent lots of time up there, especially enjoying clearing trees and brush, playing cards, and hauling rocks. Jim was a rock wall mastermind. He built hundreds of feet of impressive rock wall both at the house and the cabin. He had just completed the awesome rock entrance to the cabin the weekend before he died. Jim especially enjoyed time with family at the cabin, hiking, ziplining, and eating smores by the campfire with his eight grandchildren.
Jim was a proud grandpa and was grateful to have a second round of watching ball games and sharing his hard-earned wisdom with them. Again, he never missed a sporting event, school program, or recital. Jim was sentimental and a deep thinker. Over the years, he sent weekly letters to his kids and grandkids who lived outside Montana, and when he got his iPhone, he sent regular text touches to let everyone, even his sons-in-law, know he cared.
Jim is survived by his wife, Diane; three daughters, Lisa Malmquist (Daryl), Angie Casteel (Allen), and Wendy Krauter (Bryan); eight grandchildren, Ryan Malmquist, Ashley Malmquist, Zoe Walters (Jacob), Ivy Casteel, Jordan Freeman, Abbie Freeman, Sydney Krauter, and Joshua Krauter; mother-in-law Jeannine Garey; sisters-in-law Natalie Phillips and Nancy Lutz; and numerous cousins. His family asks that if you are so moved, please make donations in his memory to either the Headwaters Trail System or the Three Forks United Methodist Church.

You couldn’t spend much time with Don without hearing a story or two of his hunting adventures and seeing his collection of photos. He was thrilled to make a brief debut on the DIY Hunter’s Youtube Channel. Don was active in the Men’s Ministry with the Church of Christ in Montana, attending many retreats and lectureship series. He enjoyed watching sports at home in the “TV Room” and listening to music and the Bible on his Ipod. And to the end of his days, his pitch pipe wasn’t far from his heart, as he was known for his songleading abilities and strong bass voice.
Don was loved and cared for at home until the very end of his life on this earth by his loving wife Marlene Kelly, as well as several children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was gently escorted by a host of angels to the gates of Heaven to sing the “Wonderful Words of Life” on May 17, 2023.

Obituary Preview: Joan Mary Benusa, 90, of Manhattan, MT, passed away March 7, 2023, at Parkhaven Retirement Community, where she had been a resident for the past 6 years.

Joan grew up in Bowlus, MN, and attended school at a one room country schoolhouse from 1st through 8th grade. As the only student from 5th to 8th grade, she found herself helping in the younger grades, which developed into a passion for teaching at an early age and continued throughout her lifetime. After graduation, Joan attended one year of teacher’s training and for the next 5 years she taught in several rural country schools, including the country school she attended. For the next few years, she taught in Circle Pines, MN. but sadly, in November of 1957, her mother passed away from a brain aneurysm. Joan then returned to Bowlus, MN, to help care for her father and was able to teach for one year at Rice, MN.

In 1976, the family decided to move to Montana, after they fell in love with the Gallatin Valley during a summer trip. Their Montana years found them owning Manhattan Drug & Pharmacy, while Joan taught at Manhattan Elementary School. In 1992, Rey & Joan moved just down the road to Three Forks, MT, where they opened the Three Forks Pharmacy & Gift Shop until they retired and closed the business in 2006. Their Polish heritage and love of Polka music and dancing added to their enjoyment of their working and retirement years.
Joan has always been very active in the Catholic Church, serving in different ministries throughout the years. She was a loving and devoted grandmother. Her grandchildren were truly her pride and joy.
A special thanks and hugs to the staff of Parkhaven for all of their love and support over the past years.

Pat was born on 4 Aug 1928 in Harlowton, Montana, to James and Laura Britzius, a year before the Great Depression began. Although life was often difficult, Pat had very fond memories of her childhood. She often told stories about Christmas’s spent with extended family and the candle-lit Christmas tree and stuffed goose or turkey.  In 1942 the family moved to Three Forks where Jim was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad. Pat was 14 at the time and not too keen to be uprooted away from her friends and extended family. Pat quickly adapted to her new life and enjoyed her cheerleading, typing, shorthand and movies at the Ruby Theater.
She soon met her future husband, Thomas Fairhurst, who had returned from Kemper Military School. They were married in Butte on 20 Oct 1946.
Pat created a wonderful life for her family. She and Tom raised their three children, Elizabeth (Beth), Sharyn and William (Doug) in Three Forks. Pat and Tom took over running the historic Park Hotel from his parents before moving into a house they built in the 1960’s. They spent many, magical vacations at their cabin on Cliff Lake swimming, boating and picnicking. Pat was the epitome of style, grace and tenacity; she was a role model and inspiration to her family. She stepped out of social norms and took a job outside of the home and eventually became the only female cement inspector in the country. She finished out her career working in the office in Trident for the Ideal Cement Company. Pat lost her beloved husband Tom at the age of 54 in 1982. She went on to meet her soulmate, John Marceau, in 1987 and spent 35 happy years with him.

He then took this love of education further to Billings, MT where he attended Eastern Montana College where he earned his teaching degree.
Andrew taught Science at Oroville, WA Jr. High and High School for five years after graduation and added coaching girls basketball to his list of achievements. His time spent with high school students were some of the best years of his life. He enjoyed their energy and the challenge to share his love of education was addictive. He attended Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, OR, and earned his Doctor of Chiropractic. In 2004, Evenson Chiropractic in Coeur d’Alene began. Here he became the person he wanted to be. Every day he assisted those in pain to recovery and made hundreds of friends in doing so.
Andrew then fell in love and married Mary Turner on October 12, 2013 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene. Mary was the one true love of his life and with her came the family he had always wanted. He adored his daughter Breanna and his grandson Phoenix more than the air he breathed and would brag to everyone who would listen about how wonderful it was to be a Papa.
Andrew pushed himself every day to live to the fullest. When he woke he had goals to achieve and people to entertain and heal. Because of his tireless drive of life, he became the friend that every person wanted. His loyalty, love and patience earned him the largest family in Idaho and Montana. Departed: 03/05/2022 (Three Forks)
Obituary Preview: Gordon Russell Williams was born October 26, 1934, in Three Forks, Montana, to Lester and Beatrice Williams. On March 5, 2022, after a long and arduous battle with his health, he went to be with the Lord surrounded by those who loved him most: his wife of nearly 62 years and their children. His uncle Elwood gave him the nickname "Squirt," which stuck with him throughout his life. He was always known fondly as "Grandpa Squirt" by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gordon worked alongside his father on the family ranch as a young boy, where he learned to ride horses and work cattle. His passion for horses came from their utilization on the ranch and was instilled in him at a young age. However, tending to his cows remained his favorite ranch duty. After working his entire life on the family ranch, Gordon was left his portion by his father in the early 1960s and later ventured out on his own in 1970. This carried on the legacy of the original Williams Ranch, which was homesteaded in 1864. He continued to work alongside his five children, instilling in them the importance of a strong work ethic and taking pride in their work. As the years went on, you could find him out in the field with his mesh muscle shirts and hip-waders on, in one of his John Deere tractors, zipping around on his four-wheeler or driving around in his old Dodge pickup (which he wished was a Ford).
He attended elementary and high school at Willow Creek School and graduated in 1953. He desired to enlist in the military, but at the time, his needs on the family ranch were too great. He later enlisted in the Army Reserve, where he had the opportunity to travel outside of Montana to Yakima, Washington, and build an airstrip.
After meeting in High School and dating for a couple of years, Gordon and Barbara were married on April 23, 1960, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Townsend and later welcomed their five children. Gordon's kids were his pride and joy. He faithfully attended every activity that his five children participated in growing up and that dedication to his family carried over into his grandchildren's activities. He was a mainstay at high school basketball games and closely followed the MSU Bobcat football team.
Gordon was admired by everyone that knew him for his grit, strong work ethic, and integrity. He was a Montana rancher through and through and continued working the ranch at the age of 87, up until his health would no longer allow it. His tenacity was something to be admired. His signature limp resulted from a significant injury to his foot nearly 25 years ago that he refused to have checked by a doctor. He never allowed an injury or sickness to slow him down and keep him from the ranch work that needed to be done. As tough as he was, Gordon was also one of the most generous and kind-hearted individuals. He never spoke ill of anyone and was always there to lend a helping hand. He had a strong Catholic faith, which stayed with him until the end. His strong faith and indomitable spirit inspired those around him, especially his loved ones.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Beatrice Williams, brother Francis (Jeanie) Williams, and sister Norma (Dave) Miller. He is survived by his wife Barbara K. Williams, sons Dana (Robin) and Dennis (Kathy) Williams of Willow Creek, and daughters Danelle (Louis) Oakes of Three Forks, Denise (Derek) Homan of Bozeman, and Deanna (George) McKay of Columbus, sister Naoma (Dick) Lower of Harrison, numerous nieces, and nephews, 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday, March 11 @ 2 pm at Holy Family Church located in Three Forks. Burial to follow at Willow Creek Cemetery. If you feel inclined, please share any fond memories or stories of Gordon with his family. They would appreciate hearing how he impacted the lives of those around him.
