Joseph Mirque - December 07, 1926 - February 16, 2024

Departed: 02/16/2024 (Pearl River)
Obituary Preview: Joseph Fernando Mirque, 97, of West Nyack, New York, passed away on February 16, 2024. He was born on December 7, 1926, in New York City.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife, Mary Mirque, his sons and their spouses - J. Randall Mirque, Andrew Mirque and Gerard DeFranc, Charles Mirque, Brendan and Kelly Mirque, Gregory and Carolyn Mirque, his sister Christina Smyth, grandchildren Jason, Drew, Dana, Matthew, Reagan, Nicholas, Francesca, Christopher, Ryan, Kathleen, Tomas, Yvette, four nieces, four nephews, and four great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his father Jose, mother Aura, and brother Robert.
Education at Manhattan Preparatory High School and Manhattan College laid the foundation for a lifetime of intellectual pursuit and professional achievements that included a successful career in sales; creation and ownership of a successful company that also involved several of his sons. Proud of his Colombian heritage, he sought to instill that same sense of pride in each of his children and grandchildren. A voracious reader of the day’s news and his passion for politics provided a vast wealth of learning, networking, and social opportunities. A lover of history, classic films, and big band music, it was commonplace to find him wholeheartedly enjoying one of the three if not all together. He loved to dance whenever the opportunity presented itself; he was a skilled classical piano player, a talent he learned and developed at the Julliard School. He enjoyed engaging with other individuals to learn more about them. Regaling those who would listen with stories of his youth, lessons learned, and wisdom obtained from nine decades, he was the consummate patriarch of his family. Retirement saw him starting a small custom coffee business, selling his own roasted craft coffees. He never stopped learning and never stopped identifying opportunities for himself and his family. He remained passionately curious throughout his long life.
He leaves behind a legacy of family first, pushing oneself to their potential and striving for success, and the most important part of it all: cherishing the time we not only have left but the time we have now with each other. He will be dearly missed.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Joseph W Sorce Funeral Home, 34 North Summit Street, Pearl River, NY 10965. The Funeral Mass will take place at St. Aedan's Church on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 10:00 a.m.

Denise and Pete married on October 2, 1954 at St Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church on W 31st Street, NYC. They lived in Newport, Rhode Island where Pete was a US Naval Operations Officer on the destroyer USS Fred T Berry. Following Pete’s Navy stint the growing family crossed the Hudson on the opening day of the new Tappan Zee Bridge on December 16, 1955 and moved “sight unseen” to a one bedroom 1930’s Swiss Chalet style home in Pearl River. Pete resided in this home which morphed with several additions for 68 years until his passing.
Pete joined his father to work full time at Beckerle Lumber Supply Company, the family business established in 1940. Pete assumed the reins as President in 1966 and served in this capacity for nearly 45 years before assuming the role of Chairman Emeritus.
Pete started at the family business helping his father at the age of 12. After returning full time he guided the business through 3 major fires, and numerous recessions. He grew the business from a single location to three stores. He continued to mentor and advise. His wisdom, vision and experience have been invaluable through all the ups and downs. His attended his last stockholders breakfast meeting on the day he died.
Laurence “Pete” Beckerle was committed to Family, Church and Community. He was a proud member and Past President of the Nanuet-West Nyack Rotary with over 60 years of perfect attendance. He exemplified the Rotary Motto of “Service Above Self.” He served on the Board of Directors of the Spring Valley Savings and Loan and continued on the Bank’s Boards after it merged to become Crossland Savings and Metropolitan Savings Bank. Pete served on the Board of Directors of the Sisters of Charity: St Agatha’s Home, the New York Foundling and Seton Village in Nanuet. He served for 16 years on the St Thomas Aquinas College Board of Trustees helping to oversee the construction of the McNelis Commons dormitories. He served on the Boy Scouts of America Troop 33, Nanuet Troop Committee and was an Assistant Scout Master. He was recognized as the Mid Hudson Lumber Dealers Lumberman of the Year in 1985 and was active on their Board of Directors. He served on many industry related committees including the LMC Bermuda Insurance Co. He was on the board of the Rockland Business Association.
Pete was a regular attendee at St Aedan’s Catholic Church in Pearl River. In recent years he enjoyed Monday breakfast with the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out) at Pancakes Plus. (recenty profiled on local news channel). Pete found time to enjoy Tuesday night basketball for over 50 years where he was known for his hustle and deadly set shot. He was a long time active member of the Rockland Country Club where he enjoyed golf and tennis. He most enjoyed the company, kinship and friendship of his fellow players. He continued to play golf and tennis until his passing. Among his tennis group he became affectionately known as “sneaky Pete” due to crazy top spin returns.
Our family was so blessed to have this man in our lives. He was a wonderful Father, Grandfather, Husband, Uncle, Mentor and Friend. He was a man who always strived to live his Christian faith. He was a man of integrity who truly cared about his co-workers and his customers. He considered everyone to beneighbors and friends. He was born in Rockland County, NY and raised his family there. He had a second home on Jensen Beach, Hutchinson Island, Florida with an amazing community of friends. He was a proud Navy veteran and a proud graduate of the College of the Holy Cross.
He was married to the beautiful, talented city girl Denise Duross for 66 years. We never heard them utter a cross word to each other. So different but they complemented each other and completed each other. Pete is reunited with “his lady” once again.
Pete was predeceased by his wife Denise in 2020, his parents Laurence and Ellen, his son Michael who passed as an infant in 1958 and his sisters Anne Beckerle and Joan Quinn and brothers in law: Jerry Quinn, Frank Mascola, Robert Kelly, Charles Duross and nephew Jimmy Mascola. He is survived by sons Laurence III, Stephen (Breda), Michael Charles (Maureen), and Matthew (Laura). Grandpa Pete cherished his grandchildren and is fondly remembered by Emma (Ryan) who is expecting the first great grand, Kristine, Brian, Julia, and by Patrick, Daniel and Catherine and their mother Jean. He is survived by his beloved sister Mary Alice”Marcey”Mascola of West Nyack and sister-in-law Suzanne Kelly of Westhampton Beach as well as 20 nieces and nephews and their significant others who all loved Uncle Pete. He will be forever grateful for the friendship and love of niece, neighbor and fellow birthday celebrant Joan Ellen and her husband Pete.
Pete truly liked people. He liked to make people laugh and he loved to laugh. He enjoyed life. We will miss his wit and wisdom. Dad, we never said it enough but we love you and will miss you very much. Raise a toast to the beautiful sunset and toast to Pete and Denise reunited again. Your life is “it’s a Wonderful Life”. Thomas P. Taughran - October 24, 1935 - November 18, 2023

Departed: 11/18/2023 (Pearl River)
Obituary Preview: THOMAS TAUGHRAN OCTOBER 24, 1935 – NOVEMBER 18, 2023
Thomas Patrick Taughran of Wall, NJ, dedicated father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on November 18th surrounded by his loving family at the age of 88.
The only child of Thomas and Mary Taughran, Tom was born in the Bronx, NY on October 24, 1935. Raised there, he attended All Hallows High School. Thomas and Mary, who emigrated from Ireland, were proud to see him attend Iona College where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1957. He started his career at Marsh McClellan in New York City before retiring as Director of Benefits for the Archdiocese of New York in 1997.
Tom met his beloved wife Joan Conway in 1959. They married in 1960 and settled in the Fordham area of the Bronx raising their 4 children, Kerri, Tommy, Chris and Siobhan before moving to Pearl River, New York in 1976. They settled into their community becoming parishioners of St. Margaret’s Church and active members of the Pearl River AOH where they celebrated birthdays, christenings, and other milestones with their family and friends. The favorite by far was the Pearl River St. Patrick’s Day Parade, where Tom looked on with pride every year as his cherished navy blue Delta 88 convertible with white leather interior strolled down Middletown Road, Lady AOH dignitaries waving from the back seat and his wife Joanie at the helm.
In 1998 they happily retired to their favorite family vacation spot, Manasquan, NJ, where they made new memories with family and new and old friends in their Jersey Shore home. Tom discovered a love of boating, buying the Candy Two so he could take his sons and friends fishing or just out for a ride on the water. Retirement allowed Tom to indulge his love of travel. Over the years he traveled the world, but his favorite destination was Ireland where he felt a deep connection. He was extremely proud of his Irish heritage and instilled that love in his children who still listen to WFUV on Sunday mornings and continue to attend the PR St. Patrick’s Day parade every year. Tom was a history buff who loved reading historical novels, going to airshows, and visiting famous battle sites reading every placard on the way to the chagrin of his children often unhappily in tow.
Tom believed that being a generous, good person was essential to a purposeful life and he led by example, serving as a Big Brother to at risk youth, delivering and distributing food for the Jersey Shore Food Pantry and donating to many causes. Everyone in his life always knew that they could turn to him for help, wherever and whenever needed. Whether it was opening his home to his cousins from Ireland looking for a new start or reading bedside to a sick friend, Tom was there.
Family was always Tom’s first priority. To his grandchildren, Siobhan, Kathryn, Hanna, Joan, Thomas and Kylie, he was their Pop Pop who made them laugh and always wanted to hear what they were up to in school or other pursuits. He was extremely proud of their many accomplishments. Affectionately called the 20 Dollar Man, no grandchild left a visit without a $20 bill pushed into their hand or pocket.
Tom will be remembered for his sardonic wit, love of a good book, a good meal, a good joke and a good stiff drink. He loved music, a long car ride, giving his opinion and making people laugh. He will be missed by all who knew him for his sharp mind, even sharper tongue, and huge heart.
Tom is predeceased by his loving wife Joan, his mother Mary and father Thomas. He is survived by his daughter, Kerri White (John), son Tommy Taughran, Jr. (Angela), son Christopher Taughran, daughter Siobhan Connolly (Charlie), his loving grandchildren and his longtime companion, Mary Flanagan.
Funeral service will be held at St. Aedan’s Church of Pearl River on November 22nd at 10am. Burial will follow at Ascension Cemetery in Airmont, NY. Visitation will be held at Sorce Funeral Home of Pearl River on November 21st from 4 to 8 pm.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Sunnyside Manor especially the nurses and aides who showed such care and attention to not only our father but to his family during his final days.
