Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and any notable achievements.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary, although it can also be written by a funeral home or other organization. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, education, career, hobbies, and accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's usually between 100-500 words. The most important thing is to make sure it accurately reflects the person's life and personality.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help people remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. You may need to provide the text of the obituary, as well as any photos or other materials.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to have control over how they are remembered. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing a person's death, while a eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service. While both honor the deceased, they serve different purposes and have different tones.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased, so if they had a great sense of humor, it's okay to include some lighthearted or humorous anecdotes.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or controversies surrounding the deceased's life or death, it's best to err on the side of caution and avoid including them in the obituary. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments instead.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased's memory and support a good cause.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The time it takes for an obituary to be published can vary depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may take several days or even weeks.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting to avoid errors or inaccuracies.

What if I want to publish an obituary online only?

There are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary without going through a traditional newspaper. These can be more cost-effective and reach a wider audience.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including quotes, lyrics, or other meaningful phrases can add depth and personality to the obituary. Just be sure to obtain any necessary permissions or credits.

How do I share an obituary on social media?

Many online obituary platforms allow you to share the notice directly on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. You can also copy and paste the text into your own post.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member who knew the deceased well. You can also consult with a funeral home or other professional for guidance.

Can I include personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Personal anecdotes and stories can bring the deceased to life and make the obituary more engaging and relatable.

How do I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for some time?

Yes! Even if someone has been deceased for years or decades, you can still write an obituary as a way to honor their memory and celebrate their life.

What if I'm dealing with complex family dynamics when writing an obituary?

If there are complicated family relationships or conflicts involved, it may be helpful to seek guidance from a neutral third party or counselor. Remember that the goal of an obituary is to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Can I include military service information in an obituary?

Absolutely! If the deceased served in the military, be sure to include this information in the obituary as a way to honor their service and sacrifice.

How do I handle cultural or religious differences when writing an obituary?

Become familiar with any cultural or religious traditions that may impact how you write the obituary. Consult with family members or spiritual leaders if necessary to ensure sensitivity and respect.

What if I want to create a memorial website or page instead of publishing an obituary?

This can be a wonderful way to create a lasting tribute to the deceased! Many websites offer tools and resources for creating memorial pages or websites where friends and family can share memories and condolences.
