Mom was employed at the Town Shop and Tilo in Poughkeepsie, but what she enjoyed most was being a wife, homemaker, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was very proud of her Irish heritage. Mom was a perennial optimist. She loved taking care of her two granddaughters while they were young. She immensely loved dogs, decorating her home for every holiday, cooking meals, and doing Jumbo.
She had a sharp mind, and among other things, she knew from memory all of her family’s birthdays, anniversaries, and other important dates. Always the lady, she loved to dress nicely everyday and was disappointed when she had to give up wearing high-heels after breaking her hip in 2012.
Mom is survived by her loving daughter, Karen Hallock (Brent) of Hopewell Junction, New York and devoted son, Lawrence Brown, of Hyde Park. Also surviving are her adored grandchildren, Sara Futia (John) of Slingerlands, New York, Nicholas Brown (Amanda) of York, South Carolina, and Amanda Greco (Daniel) of Poughquag, New York.
She was affectionately known as “Nanny Brown” by the loves of her life, her great-grandchildren,  Paul Futia, Anna Futia, Genevieve Greco, Sebastian Brown, and Gianna Brown. Numerous nieces and nephews survive as well. Mom will be forever missed by us all.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, husband, and sisters and brothers: Millward Van Nosdall, Margaret (Van Nosdall) Tinkleman,Willam Castle, Vernon Castle, Lillian (Castle) Jessen, Marie (Castle) Barnum, Harold (Van Nosdall), and Ruth (Van Nosdall) Minneto.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 10th from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at the Joseph J. Darrow, Sr. Funeral Home, 39 S. Hamilton Street, Poughkeepsie, NY. Masks are required. Services will be held at 12:30pm. Burial will be private. Donations in Mom’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or Hudson Valley Hospice 374 Violet Ave Poughkeepsie, NY 12601

Calvin Sparrow, SR. - August 12, 1960 - January 19, 2022

Departed: 01/19/2022 (Poughkeepsie)
Obituary Preview: Calvin Sparrow Sr. of Poughkeepsie, NY transitioned from this life on January 19, 2022, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Calvin Sparrow was born on August 12, 1960, in Sylvester, GA to the late Minister Eddie and Effie Sparrow. The oldest son of nine children, his family moved to Poughkeepsie when he was very young.  Mr. Sparrow attended City of Poughkeepsie Schools and was a faithful member of the drill team where he played the horn. The best of the best, his team called upon him regularly for tighten ups, where he would correct the timing and feel of the horn section.
From an early age Calvin knew that he loved to work with his hands.  For many years he studied as an eager apprentice under his father, soaking in all of the knowledge that only a father can give to a son.  Under his father’s watchful eye, Calvin practiced his woodworking techniques at the Lumb Woodworking Company in Poughkeepsie, NY.  After acquiring mastery there, Calvin went on to pursue electrical studies at BOCES.
Mr. Sparrow worked in food services at the State University of New York at New Paltz for many years and also worked at Blocksom & Co. until his injury.
Growing up together in the same neighborhood, Calvin was always fond of Christine Simons and would find any excuse to court her.  Their favorite thing to do was to take long walks to the store together.  It was on one of those long summer walks that they both discovered how much they loved one another. On June 29, 1991, Calvin married Christine Simons and through this union, they have two beloved children, a daughter Antanique Sparrow, and a son, Calvin Sparrow Jr., both of Poughkeepsie, NY and both survive at home.  Mr. Sparrow cherished his daughter Autumn Gordon of Kingston, NY and son Bishop Shamar Williams of Poughkeepsie, NY and his granddaughter Arianna Johnson of Kingston, NY. All survive at home. Of everyone he knew and loved, the light of Mr. Sparrow’s life was his grandson, J’Aaron Wheeler of Poughkeepsie, NY. From the moment he was born, J’Aaron was Calvin’s world.  “Pee-Pop” as J’Aaron affectionately called him, was J’Aaron’s best friend, protector, and right-hand man.  Together the two traveled to J’Aaron’s football and basketball games and went on long drives together.  Pee-Pop bought J’Aaron his first fishing pole and together they spent long days and evenings on the water discussing life.  It was their favorite thing to do together.  Pee-Pop taught J’Aaron to be a real positive man and how to look on the bright side of things.  Whenever J’Aaron was frustrated or needed a shoulder to cry on, Pee-Pop was there.  Mr. Sparrow could often be heard telling everyone how proud he was of J’Aaron and how much he loved him.  J’Aaron survives at home.
Mr. Sparrow had a host of extended grandchildren who loved him very dearly; Justice Bristow, Nahzy Avent, Malaya Avent, Makye Avent, Madison Avent, and Lulu Wheeler, his fur granddaughter, and constant companion and guardian, all of Poughkeepsie, NY and all survive at home.
Mr. Sparrow loved to be out and about in the world, setting his own course. A people person, he was incredibly charismatic and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He was a very strong-willed man and a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend.  He loved to smile and had a great big laugh.  He brought joy to everyone who knew the pleasure of his company.  Fishing was his favorite thing to do in all of the world as it brought him the most peace and comfort.  On the water he was able to relax, gather his thoughts, and process his feelings.  An excellent fisherman, many of the best days of his life were spent out in nature with the people he loved most, catching, cleaning, and eating fish.  He was a great cook and gave great advice.  He listened when his friend’s needed a kind ear.  Calvin simply loved to live and enjoyed life and was glad to share it with the people closest to him.
In addition to his loving wife, children and grandchildren, Mr. Sparrow is survived by sisters, Joyce Fils (Jimmy), Brenda Simons (Tony), Bonita Sparrow, and Leatrice Swain (Anthony) all of Poughkeepsie, NY and two brothers, Carl Sparrow of North Carolina and Joseph Sparrow of Poughkeepsie, NY as well as a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Mr. Sparrow was predeceased by two sisters, Linda Faye Sparrow and Lorraine Stokes, his maternal and paternal grandparents, two nephews, Tony W. Simons Jr., and Abdelle St. Ange, one niece, Felicia Dickens, and his best friend, Rudolph McKinney. It is Mrs. Sparrow’s loving wish that Mr. Sparrow is now reunited with their beloved first-born daughter, Lacretia Antanette Sparrow. May both of their souls rejoice in their reunion. Visitation is Monday, January 31, 2022, 10-11AM at Joseph J. Darrow Sr Funeral Home Inc. 39 So Hamilton St Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 845-452-1840. Dorothy Marie Hart - October 02, 1927 - January 02, 2022

Departed: 01/02/2022 (Poughkeepsie)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy Marie Hart passed away into eternal heavenly rest on January 1, 2022.  With dear loved family members by her side. Dorothy was born on October 2, 1927, to Helen and Patrick Mahoney of Poughkeepsie, New York.  Dorothy is survived by brothers Robert Mahoney and Donald Mahoney and
sister Patricia Rider.  She was predeceased by her brother Richard Mahoney. On September 5, 1947, Dorothy married Richard E. Hart.  Dorothy and Richard were married almost 71 years until Richard predeceased her on March 30, 2018.  Together they had six beautiful
children.  Richard Hart (wife Janina), Thomas Hart (predeceased), Patrick Hart, Timothy Hart (wife Teresa), Daniel Hart (predeceased) and daughter Donna Buotte (husband Richard). Dorothy was blessed with ten grandchildren, Sean Hart, Sarah Hart, Justin Hart, Ryan Hart, Christopher Hart, James Hart, Matthew Hart, Terri Hart, Leslie Tuttle and Eric Tuttle. In addition
to her ten grandchildren, she shared the pleasure of an additional seven great-grandchildren. Dorothy dedicated her life to her husband Richard and their six children. And when grandchildren came along her dedication extended onto them. She also cared deeply for her nieces and nephews, cousins, and cousin’s children.  Dorothy enjoyed the preparations for family gatherings at holiday time, birthdays, wedding showers, baby showers.  If an occasion called for a need, she was lovingly willing to take charge of the planning and preparations. In her younger years, she loved the art of sewing. To the point where for one son’s wedding she sewed all the bridesmaids velvet gowns and her own gown. Because she finally had a daughter, she loved to sew her dresses and matching
Easter outfits.  Dorothy had a dining table large enough to plan and cut her patterns for sewing.  Such dining table is where family and friends gathered daily, games were played, conversations were had, and all her baking was done. Music really motivated Dorothy and brought her great happiness. She loved watching and listening to her favorite performers like Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Mills Brothers, Frank Sinatra and Glen Miller.  During her childhood years Dorothy was a tap dancer which left her with great admiration
for tap dancing.  She loved all dancing and especially loved dancing with her husband Richard. They were always happy on the dance floor together.
Dorothy was part of a large family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She seemed to have touched the lives of many these relatives, to the point where they were still calling and visiting her until her day of passing.  One great friendship that was still ongoing was with her friend Mary B.  Mary and Dorothy grew up as childhood friends and then shared the same family neighborhood all through live.  They would often get together and
laugh over childhood memories.  It was a dear friendship.
Such love and admiration are a great legacy to leave behind for those who knew her as a wife, mother, aunt, cousin and friend. Dorothy will be greatly missed by all the people and lives that she touched. Dorothy was also faithful in attending church at St. Peter’s in Hyde Park and Our Lady of the Rosary in Poughkeepsie. God Bless Dorothy and all who have read her obituary. Due to COVID a gathering will be celebrated later in the spring. Arrangements are entrusted to Joseph J. Darrow Sr. Funeral Home Inc. 39 So Hamilton St Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 845-452-1840. To send online condolences visit www.darrowfuneralhome.org
