Obituary Preview: John E. Born, 97, passed away early Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at his home in Lebo.
He was born November 26, 1926 at Newman Hospital in Emporia, Kansas the son of Edgar and Ellen McCandless Born.
Johnnie attended  Lebo High School where he graduated with the Class of 1944. He went on to attend Officer’s Training School in Fort Collins, Colorado.
He married Irma Fillmore September 10, 1950 at Irma’s family farm north of Lebo and they enjoyed 73 happy years together. They farmed and operated laundromats in Burlington, Lebo, and Osage City for over 30 years.  In Johnnie’s later years he became a beekeeper, collected and repaired clocks, and enjoyed shopping for antiques at flea markets, garage sales, and farm auctions.
Johnnie was a faithful member of the Lebo United Methodist Church and of Doc Hunter’s Sunday School Class. Many young people remember his thoughtful lessons presented during children’s time on Sunday mornings, and the genuine faith and love for God that he shared.
He was an active member of his community, serving through memberships in NFO, Lion’s Club, Gideons, Lincoln Township Board, and the Frog Creek Watershed Board.
Johnnie will live on in the hearts and memories of his loving wife, Irma of their home; a daughter, Amy Jarvis and husband John of Lebo; a son, John Edgar Born and his wife Linda of Lebo; five grandchildren, John Lee Jarvis of Lebo, Jacob Jarvis of Kansas City, Jamie Jarvis of Lawrence, Melinda Rausch and husband Brian of Lebo and Jonathan Born and wife Nicole of Lebo; five great-grandchildren, Daniel Rausch, Logan Rausch, Isaac Rausch, Rebekah Born and Kathryn Born, all of Lebo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellen and Edgar Born, and a brother, Wilbert D. Born, April 26, 2020.
Johnnie was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed.

Lloyd E. Sumner - September 15, 1946 - April 02, 2024

Obituary Preview: Lloyd E. Sumner was born on September 15, 1946 to J.H. “Pete” & Betty L. Marks Sumner of Garnett, Kansas.
Lloyd grew up with his siblings in Garnett. He attended Garnett High School graduating with the Class of 1965. Lloyd would go on to Emporia State University where he graduated with a degree in Education. He furthered his education at Kansas University where he earned his Masters Degree.
Lloyd married his first wife, Margaret “Peggy” Studer and had one son, Kirk. Prior to her death they had a grandson, Mac.
Lloyd taught grade school and went on to become a school administrator. He retired after 42 years of service as an educator. Lloyd served many years in the United States Army and retired as an E8 Sergeant. During his time in service to his country, he served in the Desert Storm War.
Lloyd was joined in marriage to Bobbie Kindig in 2009. They enjoyed playing cards with his parents, his brother Larry Sumner, his wife Diana and his sister Joyce Malone. Lloyd also enjoyed playing golf with friends. Lloyd and Bobbie loved traveling and showing their miniature horses. The country life was a big part of Lloyd’s enjoyment. Everything from mowing to feeding the animals.
Along with the horse and farm activities, Lloyd loved taking weekend and day trips with his step daughter, Jamie Stewart. They went to museums, festivals and many other events or sometimes just out for lunch. Lloyd was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and enjoyed many sports including, baseball, golf and basketball. A “Celebration of Life” will be scheduled at a later date to honor the “Wonderful Man!”

Mike J. Bartlett - April 19, 1963 - March 17, 2024

Obituary Preview: Mike J. Bartlett, 60, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2024 at his home near Lebo.
He was born April 19, 1963 in Stafford, Kansas the son of James Jerry and Carma Helquist Bartlett. Mike attended Emporia High School and graduated with the Class of 1981. He went on to earn a degree in Building Trades at the Flint Hills Technical College in 1983.
Mike took a position at Dolly Madison that lasted over twenty seven years. He worked his way up to Production Supervisor before retiring in 2012. He used his free time to work his ranch and build his herd of Angus cattle.
He was joined in marriage to Linda Ehle on August 12, 1989 in Emporia. Their courtship lasted eight years before he proposed marriage and they have been happily married over 34 years. In 1995 they made their home on the current farm southeast of Lebo.
Mike loved to be outdoors. Some of his many interests included hunting, fishing and trapping. He often shared memories of pheasant and elk hunts but his favorite was hunting coyotes in and around Coffey County. He also loved to play cards with his friends on Wednesdays at the Heidi in Lebo. Mike loved sharing games of all types with his family and the occasional trip to the Prairie Band Casino was always in play.
Mike’s legacy will live on through his wife, Linda Bartlett of their home; his daughter, Callie A. Fischer and husband Bradly of Lebo; a son Darren Bartlett and girlfriend Mackenzie of Lebo; grandchildren, Colton and Camden Fischer; his mother and step father, Carma and Louie Barb of Emporia; sisters, Beckie Turner of Utah and Tonetta Walecki and husband Frank of Parkville, Mo.; a brother, Jim Bartlett and wife Cheri of Topeka; several nieces and nephews; his devoted Labrador, Pepper; numerous extended family and a community of friends. He was preceded in death by his father, James Jerry Bartlett and a sister, Brenda Bartlett. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 23, 2024 at the Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home & Crematory in Lebo. Inurnment will follow services at Lincoln Cemetery

Obituary Preview: Eldon S. Jones, 62, of rural Reading, passed away, Sunday, March 17, 2024 at Newman Regional Health in Emporia.
Eldon Stanley Jones was born on March 31, 1961 in Emporia, the son of Stanley Ralph and Martha Jane (Haught) Jones. He graduated from Reading High School in 1979.
He was joined in marriage to Lisa Dawn Brickell on September 5, 1981 in Americus, Kansas. To this union, a son, Brian Keith Jones and a daughter, Blair Jordan (Jordy-Jordy) Jones were born.
Eldon worked for the Lyon County Road and Bridge Department over 39 years and helped farm with his father Stanley and brother Gary for many years.
He was a member of the Kansas Livestock Association and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
Eldon will be forever remembered by his wife, Lisa, of the home; a son, Brian (Caitlin) Jones of Topeka; a daughter, Blair Jones of Topeka; his mother, Martha Jones of Reading; two sisters, Debbie (Jerry) Creekmore of Grove, Oklahoma and Marcia (Dan) Abendroth of Omaha, Nebraska; two brothers,, Gary Jones of Reading and Glenn Jones of Wichita; two grandchildren, Wyatt and Elizabeth Jones of Topeka; as well as two brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, and several nieces and nephews, and his faithful companion, Jaxon.
He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley, and his in-laws Donald “Ike” and Betty Brickell.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 25, 2024 at the Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home in Lebo. Cremation will take place after service. Family will receive friends, Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Timothy Allen Carty - February 21, 1961 - March 14, 2024

Obituary Preview: Timothy Allen “Tim” Carty, 63, passed from this world to his heavenly home, in the morning hours of March 14, 2024, at his home near Waverly, KS. Tim was born in Bristol, Tennessee on February 21, 1961, the son of Gilmer Delane & Emma Tester Carty, both of whom preceded him in death.
Tim was united in marriage to Aida Carty on October 14, 2006 at the Berean Baptist Church in Wichita, KS. His dedication to Aida was evident in all moments of their life together.
Although he was often a man of few words, there was a deep wisdom when Tim spoke. There was always a purpose; Tim didn’t react to things, but instead, responded. He had a strong, personal faith and often quoted scripture, always explaining the deeper context, and meaning along with the verses. It was clear in the way he treated others that he strove to spread God’s love and grace to the world.
Tim founded and was the lead engineer of EMP Sheild in Coffey County, KS. Along with the company, Tim was a key member of InfraGard’s National Disaster Resilience Council, the San Antonio Electromagnetic Defense Initiative, the Department of Defense’s Electromagnetic Defense Task Force, and was a part of the government emergency telecommunications agency through MARS. Tim was also a subject matter expert for the NERC EMP task force and advised many members of the United States government. He was also a hobby gunsmith and held a Federal Firearms License that allowed him to work on, build, & sell specialty and custom firearms. He was also a concealed carry firearms instructor. In all the roles his professional life would put him in, Tim always had the singular goal of making the world a better place, in whatever capacity he could. This was shown in many ways, including a project to provide access to clean water in Ghana.
Tim’s love and legacy live on with his wife of almost 18 years, Aida Carty of their home in Waverly, KS; his sons, Johnathan Delane Carty, Gilmer Anthony Carty, and Christopher Allen Carty; his daughter, Alaina Carty; a brother, Gary Carty; four grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter and a host of extended family, friends, and others touched by his vibrant life.

Obituary Preview: Darian Skye Trout, 29, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born April, 10, 1994 in Ottawa, Kansas the daughter of Diane Stottlemire and Chad Trout. Darian spent her childhood in Ottawa until moving to Olathe in her early teenage years.
She attended Olathe North High School and graduated with Honors as a member of the Class of 2012. Darian attended KU for two years, where she studied Psychology/Pre-Law. She continued to live and work in Lawrence.
Darian enjoyed being outside, whether poolside or walking various trails around Lawrence and Clinton Lake. Friends and family were very dear to her heart. She brought a smile to everyone she encountered. Her cats, though, were her greatest love, Aries, Clover and Rena.
Darian will live on in the hearts and memories of her mother, Diane Stottlemire; her father, Chad Trout (Sandy); her siblings, Destiny Bishop (Jerry), Rudy Ebenstein (Jenna), Randall Crump, Zoi Trout (Noah), Sophia Trout, Landon Slaten, God-sister, Shay Wilson (Brenden), grandmother Waunita Dent, grandfather Daryl Stottlemire (Kathy), grandparents, Curt and Lisa Chaney, grandfather, Rick Trout; aunts, Jennifer Finch (Greg), Valerie Barkley (James), Kasi Carey (Cory) and Kelsey Watkins; nine nieces and nephews; many cousins and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her papa, Michael Swanson, her great- grandparents and an uncle.

Gladys Faye Gardner - February 06, 1934 - March 01, 2024

Obituary Preview: Gladys F. Gardner, 90, of Hartford, passed away, Friday, March 1, 2024, at the Coffey County Hospital in Burlington.
Gladys Faye Bigler was born February 6, 1934, in Rural Lyon County, Kansas, the daughter of John Jesse and Virgil Alma (Perry) Bigler. She graduated from Hartford High School in 1952.
She worked various jobs in Emporia and Hartford. She worked for Emporia Floral, IBP and had worked at the Hartford Library.
Gladys Faye was a member of the United Hartford Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was active in her community serving as treasurer on the Elmendaro Township Library board, as well as the North Central Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging and the Hartford Senior Citizens. She belonged to 4-H as a child growing up on her family’s farm and joined EHU (Extension Homemaker Units) as an adult. Gladys Faye was also active in the Kansas Rural Letter Carriers Association Auxiliary and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association Auxiliary.
Her hobbies varied from participating in sports, mainly basketball and slow-pitch softball, to researching relatives’ ancestry, along with citizens of Hartford.
Gladys Faye is survived by her daughter, Carolyn K. (Danny) Boyd of Olathe; three sons, Gilbert W. (Kathy) Gardner of Hartford and Daryl D. (Nancy) Gardner of Dexter, Kansas and Nolan J. Gardner of Neosho Rapids; ten grandchildren, Robby (Andrea) Gardner, Dana (Kyle) Cole, Haley (David) Rhoads, Nicholas (Mindy) Boyd, Nathan Boyd, John Gardner, Justin Gardner, Patrick Gardner, Scott (Tacy) Gardner, and Colby (Miranda) Gardner; and eighteen great-grandchildren, Jed, Brody and Taitlyn Cole, Lane and Brinley Gardner, Parker and Cason Rhoads, Isaac Gardner, Tenley and Jarett Gardner, Nayeli, Austin, and Gus Gardner, Harper, Colt and Maesyn Gardner, Lincoln and Lucas Boyd.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Billy Dean Bigler and a sister, Alma Juanita Newton.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 11, 2024, at Hartford Cemetery Patio. Linda Ann Hopkins - October 17, 1964 - February 20, 2024

Obituary Preview: Linda A. Hopkins, 59, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at her home in Burlington after a long and courageous fight with breast cancer.
Linda was born October 17, 1964 in Independence, Kansas. Gary and LeeAnn (Turner) Tallman. Gary was later remarried to Norma Tallman who adopted, nurtured, supported and loved Linda. Their unique bond was stronger than most mother/daughter bonds and one that Linda cherished and honored. She lived most of her childhood in Independence, KS and attended local schools. She graduated from Independence High School in 1983. She pursued her post secondary education in teaching because of the love and influence of her beloved Grandma Turner and graduated with her Bachelor’s degree from Pittsburg State University and her Master’s degree from Emporia State University. Her family was so proud of her determination and accomplishments.
She was a passionate teacher and advocate for her students, with a career spanned 27 years, most recently she taught Special Education for 6th through 12th grade at Lebo Schools for many years. She was also a teacher for international students online. She was loved by her students, their parents and her associates.
Linda was outgoing and fiercely loyal to family and friends. She loved to bowl, she was a huge sports fan and could often be seen cheering for the Chiefs, the Royals, University of Kansas. Her favorite sporting events of all were the ones she watched her grandchildren participate in. When it came to fantasy football nobody was more enthusiastic than she was. She was also creative and found many outlets to display her talents. Making decorated cakes for her children and later her grandchildren, sewing quilts for loved ones, coming up with fun Halloween costumes and a wide range of ever changing arts and crafts projects.
Linda was a member of the Lebo United Methodist Church and had been attending Radiant Life Church in New Strawn. She was also a member of the Kansas National Education Association.
She will be forever remembered by her husband, Mark Hopkins of Lebo; mother Norma Tallman, two sons, Alex (Cayla) Madron of Parsons, Kansas and Zach (Chantell) Madron of Edna, Kansas; two step-sons, Matt (Amanda) Hopkins and Jamison Hopkins, both of Lebo; a sister, Christine (Dan) Repp of Cherryvale, Kansas; a brother, Bill Neary of Tampa, Florida; ten grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 24, 2024 at the Lebo United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Friday from 11:00 a.m. until service time. Cremation to follow the Lebo service. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 1, 2024 at the Independence Episcopal Church with inurnment at Mt. Deborah Kay Black - August 31, 1956 - February 17, 2024

Obituary Preview: Debbie K. Black of Hartford, KS, passed away peacefully on February 17th, 2024 in New Strawn, KS with family by her side. Debbie was born on August 31, 1956 at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City to Bruce and Willie Meier. She attended various schools throughout her childhood, as the family moved frequently. She started in Kansas City and graduated from Garnett High School. She enlisted in the National Guards but received a medical discharge before turning active duty.
Debbie worked at her parent’s gas station for a few years, followed by the Coffey County Sheriff’s Office, Quest Services then finally to COF Training Service in 2005 where she retired in 2023 after 18 years..
In 1977, Debbie married her first husband and gained a bonus daughter, Debbie. They later had two children, Cale and Bobby; the couple later divorced.. In 2006, she married the love of her life, Roy Black, and gained two bonus children, Amy and Andrew.
The couple enjoyed going to tractor pulls and riding Harley’s together. Debbie had a soft spot for animals and children and enjoyed crafting, gardening, and spending time with her COF family. Debbie will always be known for her delicious cherry pies, deviled eggs, and rum cake.
Debbie is preceded in death by her parents, Bruce and Willie Meier, as well as Fay and Lawrence Morrow.
Debbie is survived by her loving husband Roy Black; children: Cale Morrow, Bobby (Michelle) Morrow, Debbie (Mike) Oie, Amy Black and Andrew Black; grandchildren: Hayleigh, Robert Jr, Erik, Madison, Morgan, Nicholas, Xander, Alice, and Iris. She is also survived by her siblings: Kevin (Gaile) Meier, Charlie (Galyn) Meier, Stephanie Bess and Darlynn Willis; Aunt: Lorra Meier; Nieces and Nephews: Todd (Lorie) Meier, Jason (Carey) Meier, Eric Meier, Callie Cooley, Kayla (Joseph) Stewart, William (Heather) Bess, Ethan (Whitney) Larson, Zack Larson, Josh (Tiffany) Riggs; Great Nieces and Nephews: Ella Meier, Colton Cooley, Isaac Meier, Jade Stewart, Winston Stewart, Freya Bess and Paxton Riggs. She is also survived by all of her family at COF Training Services and many other family members and friends. Jeffrey Heinzle Simmons - August 01, 1956 - February 12, 2024

Obituary Preview: Jeffrey Heinzle Simmons, 67, passed away Monday, February 12, 2024 at his home in Burlington, Kansas.
He was born on August 1, 1956 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the son of Dayton Joseph and Marguerite Heinzle Simmons. Jeffrey attended El Dorado High School and graduated with the Class of 1975.  He attended both Emporia State University and Kansas State University. His academic dedication earned him a Bachelor of Math from E.S.U. and a Bachelor of Nuclear Engineering from K.S.U., both in 1981.  He followed up this achievement by earning a Masters in Nuclear Engineering from Kansas State University in 1983.
Jeffrey married the love of his life, Nancy Jean Goetz on May 31, 1978 in Emporia.  They began their lives together in Emporia before moving to Manhattan for the completion of his education.  Jeffrey traveled throughout the United States working at various nuclear power stations.  In September of 1982 he began his journey at Riverbend Station in St. Francisville, LA. In 1986 he was called to work at Arkansas Nuclear One in Russellville, Arkansas. 1990 took him to Oswego, New York to work at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station.  In 1998 Jeffrey and Nancy made their home in Burlington, Kansas as he took a position at the Wolf Creek Generating Station.  He completed 15 years of service at Wolf Creek before his retirement in 2013.
Jeffrey continued to be involved in  the industry serving several years as a consultant at many plants around the country.  He also served as a substitute teacher for USD #243, Lebo & Waverly Schools.
Jeffrey and Nancy are members of the Flint Hills Bible Church in Emporia, Kansas.
He will live on in the hearts and memories of his devoted wife, Nancy of their home in Burlington; three sons, Dayton Simmons and his wife Jess of Edgerton, MO, Justin Simmons and his wife Becca of Blue Springs, MO, and Elijah Simmons and his wife Corinne of Overland Park, KS; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Hapgood and her husband Curtis of Merriam, KS, and Joanna Treas and her husband Chip of Clay Center, KS; two brothers, Dayton Simmons and his wife Renee of Georgetown, TX, and Bob Simmons of Herndon, VA; three step-brothers, Craig Eustice and his wife Joan of San Antonio, FL, Brad Eustice and his wife Nancy of Edmonds, WA, and Judd Eustice and his wife Monica of Taipei, Taiwan; Numerous extended family and a community of friends.  Jeffrey was preceded in death by his parents, “Joe” and Marguerite; a sister, Susan Simmons and two brothers, Joseph “Pat” Simmons and Tom Simmons.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, February 16, 2024 at the Flint Hills Bible Church in Emporia, Kansas. Donald Lee Harp - April 06, 1953 - February 12, 2024

Obituary Preview: Donald Lee Harp, 70, passed away Monday, February 12 at his home in Lebo, Kansas.
He was born on April 6, 1953, in Jellico, Tennessee, the son of Bernice (Bennett) Rollins. He attended Hays High for a short time then joined the US Marines. He later received his GED and graduated from the Kansas Police Academy in Hutchinson, Kansas.
Donald married the love of his life, Jean Myra Riedel on March 8, 1974, in Hays, Kansas. To this union were born two daughters Stephanie (Robert) Stephens of Lebo, Kansas, and Geralen (Micheal) Davidson of McMinnville, Oregon.
They began their lives in Jellico, Tennessee where he worked as a coal miner. They then moved back to Kansas where he worked in the oil field doing numerous jobs. He then began working for the Kansas Department of Transportation in 1986 in Hays, Kansas. He would later transfer to Council Grove, Kansas as a Supervisor for the Department of Transportation and retire. He continued to work as a Police Chief for the City of Americus until he retired due to health issues.
Donald was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved gardening and the outdoors. He won numerous competitions with his bows and rifles. He also enjoyed helping Jean in the kitchen sampling all her good cooking and buying the newest kitchen gadgets he could find.
He will live on in the hearts and memories of his devoted wife and daughters, grand-children, two sisters Wanda Bankhead and Pam Bankhead, sister-in-law Lois (Charles) Albers, sister-in-law Marilyn (Arnie) Augustine, sister-in-law Elaine (Ken) Sanders, brother-in-law Myron (Rhonda) Riedel, brother-in-law Leon (Marilyn) Riedel, sister-in-law Jeannie Riedel, and sister-in-law Twila Riedel and numerous nieces and nephews.

Obituary Preview: Frances “Jean” Parker, 78 of Lebo, Kansas passed away Sunday, February 11, 2024 at her home in Lebo.
Jean was born November 29, 1945, to Ed and Belle (Hilligas) Kellerman in Westphalia, Kansas.
Jean went to Welda Grade School through half her 5th grade year and the family then moved to Westphalia to her Grandma Kellerman’s home where she finished her 5th grade year and continued with her schooling, graduating from Westphalia High School in 1963.
Following high school, Jean went to work for the Coffey County Hospital in the janitorial department. she worked there until 1965 when she went to work for H.D. Lee Company in Ottawa.
Jean married David Buckridge September 1, 1966. They had two daughters, Shirley and Sharon. David adopted Jean’s daughter Sally. Jean and David were later divorced.
Jean later moved to Burlington and worked at the Golden Age Lodge for several years. Jean moved to Hartford and began working at Hartford Manor. She worked a few years there before going to Peterson Nursing Home in Osage City. While living in Hartford she accepted the Lord as her Savior and was baptized at the First Christian Church. She worked part time at the Nursing Home and the Assisted Living in Osage City. While working there she also worked part time for her sister Joan Hess doing janitor work at Wolf Creek Nuclear Plant in Burlington. While working at Wolf Creek she met Walter (Dick) Parker, who was a security guard there. Jean and Dick were married June 4, 1983, and they made their home in Lebo.
After moving to Lebo, she started working for Peterson Nursing Home full time and worked there 34 years before retiring. While working there she became a CNA, CMA, and a CRA. In 1993 Jean was selected as CNA of the year for the State of Kansas.
She lost her husband Dick in June of 1997 to cancer.. She enjoyed taking care of the elderly and after retirement she would care for some of the elderly in Lebo so they wouldn’t have to go to a nursing home.
Jean liked her sports. She was a big Royals, Chief’s, and KU fan. She loved watching basketball games and keeping track of the tournaments. During high school she even coached a little league boys’ team from Westphalia. They took second place in their league. She even played softball during her high school years.
She met David Lyman and he has been her companion for over twenty years. David became Jean’s caregiver after she was diagnosed with cancer in 2022. Jean was on the Iola Sisters Relay For Life Team and has been a big supporter of the Relay For Life of Allen County since 2007. She is currently Co-Captain of the team.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dick Parker; son-in Law Danny McDonald; daughters Shirley (David) Foster and Sharon Jenkins; sisters Thelma (Vincent) Hoefler, Eileen (Carl) Canfield, Dorothy Kellerman, Joan (Floyd) Hess, Ina (Loren) Railsback; brothers Lawrence (Juanita) Kellerman, Bill (Ginny) Kellerman, Carl Kellerman; brother-in-law Earl Cole; sister-in-law Harriet Kellerman. Jean is survived by her daughter Sally McDonald and companion Mitto Otiz; grandsons Nathan McDonald and his companion Misty, Dustin McDonald, William Derick Foster; granddaughters, Heather (Alex) Perkins, Sammi (Wyatt) Wright; great-granddaughters, Ariella, Aleyah, Kamya and Lillian; great -grandsons, Gunner, Maxx and Danny; sister Edna (David) Donovan; brothers, Fred Kellerman, George (Donna) Kellerman, Milo (Janice) Kellerman and Donnie Kellerman. Obituary Preview: Geneva M. Phillips, 93, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Holiday Resort in Emporia.
She was born on November 19, 1930 in Lebo, Kansas the daughter of Harvey and Nellie Childers Arb.
Geneva was raised on a farm S.W. of Lebo. Her father died during her eighth grade year and she was needed at home to help run the farm. She did her best to keep things running but ultimately the family moved into Lebo a year or so after Harvey’s death.
She was joined in marriage to Miles D. Frank on November 23, 1947 in Waverly. They enjoyed over 25 years together until his death on January 30, 1971.
In the early 1970’s Geneva began working at Ted Redict Electric in Emporia. She later operated a janitorial service specializing in homes and apartments.
Geneva married Robert S. Phillips on September 4, 1971 in Ottawa, Kansas. They shared twenty eight years before his death on August 13, 1999.
Geneva loved all things outdoors including, hunting, fishing and gardening.
She will live on in the hearts and memories of her daughter, Karen Snow and her husband Gordon of Lane, Kansas; a son, Ken Frank and his wife Becky of Lebo; five grandchildren; numerous extended family and a community of friends. Geneva was preceded in death by a son, Robert Franks; her two husbands; her parents; a sister, Barbara Linsey and three brothers, Wilber Arb, Harvey Arb and Lester Arb.

He was born February 5, 1944 in Paradise, Kansas the son of Loren and Blossom Elliott Hutchcraft. He attended Plainville High School and graduated with the Class of 1962.
Doug went to work with his father after high school learning the ins and outs of remodeling and home construction. Following his father’s death, Doug started his own business, Little D. Construction in Plainville. His career in construction lasted over 35 years.
Doug was joined in marriage to Judith Mae Baasch on July 8, 1980. They moved to Osawatomie in the late 1980’s. Judith preceded him in death on April 23, 2013.
He married Patsy May Elder on November 17, 2013 in Princeton, Kansas. Patsy would precede Doug in death on March 23, 2022.
After a career change, Doug worked as a truck driver for Leadbetter Mobil Homes in Ottawa and Voight’s Trucking in Fontana, Kansas.
He will live on in the hearts and memories of his sons, Paul Hutchcraft of Canyon City, Colorado, Joel Hutchcraft of Hoisington, Kansas, David Hutchcraft of Iowa and Doug Hutchcraft of Pleasanton, Kansas; step-children, Waunita Dent of Ottawa, Ernest Leroy Funk of Rantoul. Bradley Joe McCune of Scranton, Ronald Eugene Funk of Paola; sisters, Marlene Phillips of Wichita and Delores Hocker of Midlothian, Texas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Doug was also preceded in death by a son Michael Richard Finch and a brother, Ted Hutchcraft.
Doug’s wishes were to be cremated without services and inurned by his family at a later date.

Obituary Preview: Charles “Lloyd” South, 65, of Larned, KS passed away January 10, 2024 at Life Care Center of Burlington, KS after a long battle with cancer.
Lloyd was born July 10, 1958 to parents Louis I. and Lois J. (Ford) South in Wichita, KS. For many years Lloyd worked in construction as a roofer. He loved to go fishing, especially if it was with his family. There were countless days spent together at the lake at their favorite fishing spots. When he wasn’t fishing, Lloyd was one of the biggest fans of the Kansas City Chiefs. He had a whole collection of Chiefs gear to wear.
Family was always the biggest part of Lloyd’s life. Holidays and birthdays always guaranteed a visit or call from Lloyd. On the top of that list was his daughter, whom he loved with his whole heart.
He is preceded in death by both his parents, Louis I. and Lois J. South; and 3 brothers, Andy Richardson, Louis G. South, and Rick South.
His loving memory and love for fishing lives on in the hearts of his daughter, Crissy Woodward of Wyoming; 3 sisters, Linda “Kay” Snyder, Jerrie Lynn South DeRose, and Mildred South; and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
A memorial fishing trip to Fall River will be held later in the year (date to be determined based of everyone’s availability) for all friends and family who wish to attend. Lloyd now rests in the care of God’s hands, with all family members who departed before him, and they are keeping the fire lit for us all.

Barbara Ann Bohm - October 11, 1952 - January 02, 2024

Obituary Preview: Barbara Ann Bohm, sister to Margene Crane, peacefully passed into her heavenly home during the night on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.
She had lived at the Life Care Center in Burlington for the past 8 years. She had a life-long passion for science and was a member of Mensa. Barbara achieved a Masters Degree in mathematics from the University of Kansas. She also attained a Masters Degree in Physics from the University of Florida.
Although it was a life-long dream of hers to work in the field of Physics, Barbara worked at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant in Alabama for a short time.
Barbara became ill with a mental and emotional disease in her 20’s. In the 50 plus years since the onset of her illness her diagnosis changed. The latest being 10 years ago which was schizoaffective with psychotic episodes, her most serious diagnosis to date.
Her sister, Margene praises the Lord that Barbara is free of her illness forever.
Barbara achieved much during her life of volunteer work as an advocate for others with mental illness and their families. She ran the support group “Spirit III” a free gathering of support for others with mental illness and their families in Emporia and the surrounding area. Barbara put her expertise to use sharing her knowledge with the Kansas State Legislature advocating for those experiencing mental illness and their families. Barbara’s family takes great pride in the selfless work for those that needed a spokesperson.
Barbara was born October 11, 1952 in DuBois, Nebraska the daughter of John and Elsie Fidermutz Bohm. She was preceded in death by her parents. She never married and did not have children. She will be kept in the heart and memories of her only sibling, Margene Crane.
Barbara was cremated and her ashes will be scattered by her family at a later date.

Obituary Preview: Bernice E. Spielman 97, passed away Wednesday December 27, 2023 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka.
She was born February 23, 1926 in Osage City, Kansas, the daughter of William Loren and Nina Clarke Marshall. Bernice attended Osage City High School where she graduated with the Class of 1944.
Bernice attended Washburn University for two years. During college, Bernice worked summers at the Topeka Supply Depot and Forbes Air Force Base.
She was joined in marriage to Edwin H. Benton on May 19, 1946 in Osage City, Kansas. They began their lives together living in Montezuma, Kansas until moving to Miller in 1957. In January of 1959 Bernice and Edwin settled in Lebo, Kansas where she would remain for the majority of her life.
Bernice’s husband Edwin preceded her in death on January 22, 1962. She began working at Allegre Rexall in Lebo following Edwin’s death. Bernice would spend the next 34 years there before her eventual retirement.
She was joined in marriage to Ivan “Dale” Spielman on April 4, 1969 in Lebo. Bernice and Dale enjoyed 15 years together until his passing on July 1, 1984.
Bernice spent her adult life as an active member of the Lebo United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She also held membership in the Lebo American Legion Auxiliary. Bernice loved music and participated in the Choralaires vocal group for many years. Her many interests also included Gardening, Cross Stitch and Reading.
Bernice will live on in the hearts and memories of her daughters, Ardith Holmes of Topeka and Patricia Benton of Topeka; a son, Reverend Charles Benton and his wife Linda of Topeka; four grandchildren, Bree Rogers, Abby Lear, Jennifer Kuhlmann and Kevin Holmes; a sister; Nina Carlson of Waseca, Minnesota; six great-grandchildren; twenty one nieces and nephews; numerous extended family and a host of dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Edwin and Ivan; eight siblings, Phyllis Andre, Hildred Whittington, Florence Linton, Vivian Marshall and Vera Carucci and three brothers, Lauren Marshall, Robert Marshall and Bruce Marshall and a son-in-law, Gary Holmes.
Services are scheduled for 10:30 A.M., Saturday, January 6, 2024 at the Lebo United Methodist Church. Burial is planned for 1:30 P.M., Saturday at Osage City Cemetery. Obituary Preview: Jack Alan Casebier, 79, of Reading, KS passed away peacefully, and in the comfort of his home, on December 16, 2023.
Jack was born in Emporia, KS on August 30, 1944, the son of Guy Orvis and Abbie Marie (Renner) Casebier. He grew up with his 9 siblings in Reading, KS, where he farmed for many years on the Casebier Farm. In 1962, Jack graduated from Reading High School. In January of 1964, he enlisted in the US Navy. Jack was incredibly proud of his service as a Torpedoman and was stationed in Spain on the USS Holland during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged from active duty after 4 years of service and greatly enjoyed going to reunions to see those he served alongside.
After his military service, Jack began work as an over the road truck driver. He loved to travel, driving all over the United States and was at home on the road. When he wasn’t traveling, he liked to spend his time driving around town with his coffee to and from family and friends’ houses to visit with them. He was also a part of the construction of Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant in Burlington, Kansas. He had a sharp memory and could remember absolutely everything about everyone he talked to. Jack had a hippie spirit and appreciated good food, good music, and a good smoke. Even as his health made him less mobile, he still loved spending time with family and friends when they came over to visit.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Guy and Marie Casebier; brothers, Alpha Guy Casebier and Austin Euguene Casebier; and 4 sisters, Zola Marie Stapleton, Wanda LaVonne Hopper, Betty Alyce Smith, and Effie NelJeanette Gregory; daughter, Brooke Casebier; and 2 grandchildren, Grace and Phillip Casebier.

He was born May 29, 1983 in Emporia, Kansas the son of Manuel Ruiz, Jr. and Janet Lynn Lewis. Matthew attended Burlington Schools and later Free State High School in Lawrence.
He would later go on to earn his GED.
Matthew was in a serious car accident in 2001 which changed the arch of his life in countless ways. Matthew did his best to remain positive moving forward with the challenge of living in a wheelchair. He was often heard using the phrase “Never Give Up” Matt was known as Ninja to many of his friends.
Matt loved fishing and being with his brother, Scott. Spending time with his Grandpa Lewis, Uncle Bill and his numerous friends was also a favorite pastime for Matt.
In 2010 he moved to Lebo and began attending classes at Flint Hills Vo. Tech.
Matthew will live on in the hearts and memories of his mother, Janet Lewis of Lebo; a daughter, Ayana Gutierrez of Lawrence; a son Miles Mosher of Lawrence; a sister, Heidi Silverman and husband Isaac of Olathe; a brother, Scott Hinton and wife Meagan of Juneau, Alaska; his maternal grandmother, Marjorie Lewis of Lebo; a niece, Mabel Hinton; nephews, Isaac Silverman of Kenosha, WI and Arlo Hinton of Juneau, Alaska; numerous extended family and a community of supportive friends. Obituary Preview: Larry J. Germann, 85, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Holiday Resort in Emporia.
Larry Joseph Germann was born October 21, 1938 in Hartford, a son of 15 children to Theodore and Vera Lee (Whitehurst) Germann. He graduated from Hartford High School in 1957. He was a very proud Hartford Redskin.
He served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1966. Larry was a proud Veteran.
Larry worked at the Hartford Elevator and Daniels, during the construction of Wolf Creek Power Plant.
He met the love of his life, Dorothy Rempel and were married on September 4, 2004 in Hutchinson, Kansas. She preceded him in death on June 7, 2023.
Before marriage, Larry resided in Hartford on the family homestead. One of many things Larry was known for was his wonderful gardens, especially his tomatoes, and was willing to share with everyone in Hartford. He was also known for having the shiniest boots around.
Larry’s kids were his nieces and nephews. He helped raise them and taught them to fish, drive and garden. He Shared a Birthday with 1 of his Great nieces Cassidy Thweatt as she was born on his 60th Birthday. He had only one granddaughter, Jessica who became his granddaughter when he married Dorothy. Larry has bonded with several of his great, great nephews and nieces getting to attend their events. He will be truly missed for his sense of humor and fist bumps and solid handshakes.
He was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church in Hartford and AA in Hutchinson, where he received his 20-year sobriety coin. He loved to attend Alumni Banquets every year.
Larry is survived by his many nieces and nephews; a step-son, Johnny Rempel; a granddaughter, Jessica Elliot; a great-granddaughter, Lily and numerous friends and family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 9, 2023 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hartford. Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m., before service with family receiving friends until service time. Burial to follow mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hartford. She was born July 30, 1948 in Sabetha, Kansas the daughter of Robert L. and Naomi F. Barton Messinger.  Peggy attended Emporia High School and graduated with the Class of 1966.  Peggy worked as a waitress during high school at  the Mitway Café.
She married David H. Jones on June 2, 1967 in Emporia, Kansas. They had two daughters together.  David and Peggy lived in Emporia until divorcing in 1982.
Peggy started working on the production floor at Fanestil  Meats and worked her way up to salesperson.  She excelled at sales and was named Salesperson of the Year several years in a row as a result of her hard work.  Peggy put her sales experience to work in later years at Chester Press.
Peggy began a new chapter in her life when she married Dennis Hodges on September 5, 1987.  She owned and operated Peggy Sue’s Restaurant at Beto Junction for eight years.  Peggy was a supportive farm wife. Working with Dennis at the family farm west of Lebo.  She later took the position of  head cook at Lebo Schools and remained there until her retirement.  Peggy had previously worked at the Allegre Rexall and at Casey’s General store in Lebo.
Peggy will live on in the hearts and memories of her daughters, Julie Harrison of Emporia,  Dava Jones (Edward) of Topeka, Ks, Jayne Spitznogle (Shane) of Valdosta, Georgia;  sons, Jeff Hodges (Kristin) of Lebo and John Hodges (David) of Kansas City, Missouri; a sister, Pat Whitley of Liberty, Missouri; eleven grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; numerous extended family and a host of dear friends. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Roger Messinger and her husband, Dennis Hodges who passed on October 18, 2020.

Obituary Preview: William Edward “Bill” Moon, 91, passed away Friday, November 24, 2023 at his sister’s home in Garnett.
Bill was born September 28, 1932 in Waverly, Kansas the son of Jum and Ora Cooper Moon. He attended school in Burlington and Halls Summit and later graduated from Lebo High School with the Class of 1950.
Bill worked at Pioneer Hardware in Burlington before entering the United States Army on April 10, 1953. His time in the service would take him to Germany for two years. Bill was issued and honorable discharge from service on March 17, 1955.
He later began a career as a bookkeeper and clerk at Bank IV in Topeka until his retirement in 1991.
Bill enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening, raising chickens and taking long walks in the country with his dog Skippy.
Bill will live on in the hearts and memories of his extended family and many friends.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at Key West Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: David W. Evans, Jr., known to most as Buddy, died peacefully at home on November 19, 2023. He was 90 years old.
Buddy was born to David W. and Edith Sergeant Evans on October 1, 1933, at Newman Hospital in Emporia, KS. He attended Coal Creek School and graduated from Lebo High School in 1951. He went on to earn a degree from Kansas State University. After 5 years in Manhattan, Buddy returned to Lebo to farm and ranch.
He married Paula Sue Jones on August 15, 1965, in Neodesha, KS. She survives. He is also survived by daughters Susan (Rob) Evans Atchison, Arvonia, KS, and Mary (Joel) Kaczor, Lawrence, KS; grandsons Degan Kaczor, Devan McEwen, and Camden Kaczor; step-grandchildren Amanda Atchison, Ashley (Aaron) Koehn, Todd (Emilie) Atchison, and Zach (Abigail) Atchison; two step-great-grandsons; brother John R (Sara), Lebo; nieces Paulette Lyman, Paige Westfall, Megan Evans, Kate Evans, and nephew Dylan Evans. Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James Otto Evans, and his sister Brenda Lyman.
Buddy was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and the Lebo United Methodist Church. He was awarded Lebo Alumni of the Year in 2021. Buddy took great pride in his Welsh heritage, collecting Welsh pottery and supporting efforts to keep the Welsh culture alive. He was a past trustee and life member of the Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu Association.
Buddy’s quiet demeanor will be dearly missed. His life was a gift to many and his family is forever blessed to have had him as part of their lives.

Obituary Preview: Mary Kathleen Goodwin, 88, passed away early Thursday, November 16, 2023 at her daughter’s home in Emporia.
She was born January 13, 1935 in Arvonia, Kansas the daughter of Ellis John Graham, Sr. and Essie Smith Graham. Mary attended Reading High School and graduated with the Class of 1953.
Mary was joined in marriage to William S. Goodwin, Jr., on August 13, 1955 in Manhattan, Kansas. Bill was still active duty in the Army which caused the young couple to relocate from time to time. Over the next few years they lived in Georgia, Germany and Alaska. They settled down in Lebo in 1972 after Bill’s retirement. The two would later divorce.
Mary was a homemaker during the early years of her family life. In the mid 1980’s she took a job at Dolly Madison where she spent the majority of her time working on Line 3. She has delivered newspapers with her son, William Ellis Goodwin in the Emporia and Americus area for the past 7 years. Mary was a member of the White Rose Eastern Star Chapter #297 of Gridley.
Mary will live on in the hearts and memories of her daughter, Elizabeth Lea Brannan of Emporia; a son, William Ellis Goodwin and his wife Kristina Ann of Emporia; eleven grandchildren; twenty four great-grandchildren; numerous extended family and a host of dear friends. She was preceded in death by her son John Dale Goodwin; a daughter, Mary Stark; a granddaughter, Maria Lanae Goodwin; and a grandson, John William Brannan.
Services will be held at 5:00 P.M, Sunday, November 19, 2023 at the Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home in Lebo. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, November 20, 2023 at Arvonia Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and sent in care of the J\ones VanArsdale Funeral Home at P.O. Obituary Preview: Betty Small, 89, of Lebo, Kansas, died Thursday, November 16, 2023, at Neodesha, Kansas, Wilson Medical Center.
Betty Small was born Elizabeth Ann Johns on January 20, 1934, to Walter and Emma (Cook) Johns on their family farm in Reading, Kansas. Betty graduated from Reading High School and married Donald Small on August 31, 1952. She then traveled with him to San Antonio, Texas, and Fairbanks, Alaska, during his Air Force service. They returned to Kansas, bought a farm, and had three girls - Sherie, Terri, and Tammy.
Betty worked at the Reading State Bank for over 25 years. She helped with farming by doing chores, taking meals to the fields and eventually driving the tractor to prepare the fields for planting. Betty still found time to be active in the Lebo Methodist Church’s UMW, choir, and chimes. She also was a member of the Lebo American Legion Auxiliary, Red Hatter’s, Lebo Choralaire’s, Senior Citizens Club, Just for Fun Pinochle, Bridge Club, and Golden Heart Exercise. Betty was a much-loved, active member of her community.
Betty was a wonderful mother and grandma. She adored her three great-granddaughters, and they adored her. She liked nothing better than to watch them play, even if many times it had to be through FaceTime.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Sherie (Frank) Wilks of Naperville, Illinois, Terri (Howard) Schlange of Independence, Kansas, and Tammy Bittinger of Edmond, Oklahoma; granddaughter Elizabeth (Daniel) Pollock of Aurora, Illinois; grandsons Andrew Wilks of Naperville, Illinois, and Eric (Tayler) Schlange of Independence, Kansas; great-granddaughters Cordelia and Audrielle Pollock of Aurora, Illinois, and Kolbi Schlange of Independence, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband on February 6, 2002; her parents Walter and Emma Johns; brother Roy Johns; and grandson Patrick Schlange.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, November 27, 2023, at the Lebo United Methodist Church. Pastor Lori Schwilling will officiate. Inurnment will be at the Arvonia Cemetery in Arvonia, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to Lebo United Methodist Church and sent in care of the Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home at P.O.
