Richard "Ricky" Allen Kidwell, Jr. - December 06, 1999 - April 20, 2022

Departed: 04/20/2022 (Swansboro)
Obituary Preview: Richard Allen Kidwell, Jr. (Ricky) of Swansboro, NC, was 22 years old at the time that he left this earth and went to be in his permanent home with his loving Savior, Jesus. Ricky was born on December 6th of 1999 in Alexandria, VA. He lived there until the age of 5, when he then moved to Swansboro. He loved his town and the people very much. Ricky was a member of Swansboro United Methodist Church and spent many hours acolyting for services. Ricky also attended Swansboro Baptist Church on Tuesday evenings where he participated in Teen Community Bible Study. He loved his Tuesday night group and even recently returned to visit. He created many special bonds here and was always drawn to the Bible. After graduation, (where he graduated with a 4.8 GPA) at Swansboro High School, Ricky attended University of North Carolina, Wilmington. He attended there for one year but returned home after this. Over the school years, Ricky had several young friends who tragically passed away. He struggled with this, as he mentally struggled with many things, as well as Addiction.  He was the most caring, loving, gentle, giving and passionate person I’ve ever known. He felt one of his biggest achievements was to be the State Champion of the 800m event in High School, to this day Ricky holds several records at our local schools for running. He also holds a Director's Award for Band during his middle school years where he played the Trumpet beautifully. He was also a Big brother to Tommy and Jenny and had many cousins that he remained close to throughout his life. These relationships were very special and important to him. Ricky loved people, he wanted to help, accept and care. Ricky was born wanting to be perfect in an imperfect world. He desired to go to live in the only place that he knew was perfect and though his family will miss him every single day, they know that he has found his true and permanent home.
Ricky was survived by his parents, Richard Allen and Wendie Kidwell of the home, sister, Jenny Kidwell; brother, Tommy Kidwell both of the home; his grandparents, Steve and Pat Wheaton of Cedar Point, Robert Kidwell of Swansboro, and Pete and Laverne Dodson of Swansboro, he also leaves behind many special friends, cousins, aunts and uncles that all adored him.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Patricia Kidwell.

Evelyn Aveleene Moore - September 09, 1937 - April 06, 2022

Departed: 04/06/2022 (Swansboro)
Obituary Preview: Swansboro- Evelyn Aveleene Moore, 84, passed away Wednesday April 6, 2022 at The Cottages of Swansboro.  She was born September 9, 1937, in Marshville, NC, the only child of John H. and Dorothy Mills Moore.
A private graveside service will be held Friday, April 15, 2022, at Seaside Memorial Park. Following this service, a public Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 PM at Yana’s Restaurant, one of her favorite places in this world.
She is survived by sons Jonathan York of Raleigh; Brad Nicolajsen and beloved daughter-in-law Amy of Emerald Isle; daughter, Yana Davis (James) of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren, John John Sloan (Andrea), Jacob Sloan (Nayanda), James “Taz” Davis, Dane Nicolajsen and Luke Nicolajsen; great grandchildren, Jace, Rylan, Brooks, Kennedy, Donovan, Lincoln, and Hayden; Joe Webb, one of her closest and most dearest of friends since she moved to Swansboro in 1968.
Evelyn spent her childhood in rural Union County on a farm owned by her parents near Marshville, NC. She helped with many chores around the farm and especially enjoyed picking cotton during harvest season, competing with her Aunt Virginia (Jinnie) Aldridge to see who could have the biggest haul for the day.
Evelyn excelled both academically and athletically, graduating from high school at an early age. A high school basketball star, she was known for her deadly aim and ability to hit a swish from half court, scoring 59 points in one game to win the county championship. She went on to play basketball and tennis in college at Flora McDonald and later Pfeiffer University.
After graduation from Pfeiffer, she began her career in education teaching business curriculum at Forest Hills High School in Marshville. Evelyn later relocated to Swansboro where she taught business and secretarial science at Coastal Carolina Community College. During summers she acquired her master’s degree in Guidance Counseling from East Carolina University and spent the latter part of her educational career helping many students in Onslow County pursue their academic careers.
While still working in the community college system Evelyn and her daughter Yana opened Yana’s restaurant, a 50’s style diner in the location of the old town drug store.  It was during this time that “YanaMama” evolved.  Evelyn loved the 50’s and the food at Yana’s, all handmade, reflected that era with great tunes blasting on the Wurlitzer jukebox. Evelyn was passionate about the restaurant and providing excellent food and service to her customers. She was a force to be reckoned with but loved her staff as if they were family.  She was known as a wonderful legacy, an icon to the small little NC Coastal fishing town that Swansboro once was.  Over the years, 39 years to be exact, Yana’s has become nationally known, having been featured in Southern Living and Our State magazine as well as on televised travel shows.
Evelyn remained a fixture in the Swansboro community for over 50 years, loved and respected by her friends and customers and especially enjoyed gathering with her family around great food. Many years were spent making precious memories that will be kept close to our hearts.  There are the numerous Christmas Eve traditions of gathering at her house to celebrate the holiday, the annual birthday celebrations spent eating clams on the back porch, to the everyday trips to her grandkids sporting events that “MawMaw” would never think about missing.  And even the simple afternoons spent together drinking Cokes out of a glass bottle, it is these special times that we will all miss the most.

Barbara Ann Drum - Unknown - April 04, 2022

Departed: 04/04/2022 (Swansboro)
Obituary Preview: Emerald Isle- Our precious mother, Barbara Ann Waltsak Drum, the true heart of our family, went to her heavenly home on April 4, 2022, surrounded by her loved ones.
A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St. Mildred’s Catholic Church in Swansboro with Monsignor Gerald L. Lewis officiating.  The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 12, 2022 from 6-8 PM at Jones Funeral Home-Swansboro. There will be a private family committal service for her to be laid to rest with her husband.
Mom was born in Newark, NJ, to the late William and Regina Martin Waltsak.  She was one, of what would become, thirteen children.  Mom continued to live in Newark until she graduated from St. Vincent Academy in 1952.  Upon graduation mom moved to her family’s new residence in Manasquan, NJ.
In 1955 mom married our beloved father, James Edward Drum, Sr. dad enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.  After many years of traveling, dad finally retired in 1975.  He and mom moved back to Jacksonville, NC where they settled down into their first permanent home.  Dad passed away in December 2018.
There were four children in our family, Jim, Gina, Jeff, and Jon.  Mom was a very patient, kind, and loving parent making her family the priority of her life.  She eventually became a grandmother to April Whedbee, Nicholas Benton (deceased), Summer, Sailor, and Tanner Drum, and Noah, Gabrielle, and Jonathan Drum.  In her later years, mom became a great-grandmother to Lucas Benton, Anderson Whedbee, and Crosby Whedbee.
Mom was a very spiritual woman with a special devotion to the Blessed Mother of Jesus.  She and dad attended St. Mildred’s Catholic Church in Swansboro, for many years.  Mom could always be found leading the rosary or spending quiet time in adoration.  She also spent hours as a volunteer with the Hem of His Garment Thrift Store.
As we children grew older, mom decided it was time to go to work outside of the home.  She worked for the Town of Emerald Isle in the water department.  When the opportunity came for a civil service job at Camp Lejeune, mom took a leap of faith and began a career position with the Commissary.  She retired from this position in April, 1999.  Mom’s last employment was with Waterway RV Park in Cedar Point.
Mom loved island life, and when their youngest, Jon, went off to college, mom and dad pursued their dream and built a lovely home in Emerald Isle.  They lived in “Barbara’s Dream” for the remainder of their lives.  During these years residents and visitors alike would see mom walking her 2+ miles per day or see her swimming out into the surfing lineup looking for her son, Jeff.  Mom cherished all the friends she had made during her life’s journey, and really enjoyed the special times she shared with each one.
Mom is survived by her children and their loved ones including, Jeff, Jim (Cindy), Gina (David), and Jon (Kris).  She also leaves behind a brother, Leo Waltsak (Claire); sister-in-laws, Claire Waltsak, Barbara Burkhardt and Delores Waltsak; brother-in-law, Joseph Meyer; and many nieces and nephews.
Those joining mom in heaven are her husband Jim, her grandson, Nicholas; her brothers, sisters and spouses: Robert (Olive) Waltsak, Regina (George) Fuller, Rita (William) Stickle, William (Dottie) Waltsak, George Waltsak, Elizabeth (Walter) Litzbaur, Joan Meyer, James Waltsak, Thomas Waltsak, Martin (Jeanne) Waltsak, and Paul Waltsak.
We would like to thank these special women for taking such wonderful care of our mom as she courageously fought Parkinson’s Disease: Cindy Maners, Chelsea Greene, Colleen Hussion, and Grace Mastracco; and Community Home Care and Hospice.
