Edgar Eugene "Gene" Porter - October 08, 1930 - November 25, 2019

Departed: 11/25/2019 (Monroe)
Obituary Preview: Edgar (Gene) Porter was born the 4th of 8 children, to Louis Virgil and Leslie (Twitty) Porter in Girdner, Missouri.  October 8, 1930, was the beginning of this long and eventful journey.
Gene grew up during the depression when things were hard.  He had to quit school in the 8th grade to help the family on the farm.  In helping to support his family, he moved in to the home of the local veterinarian where he worked for several years.  He may not have had a formal education but he never stopped learning. This made him a very wise man.
After returning from Korea in 1960, he married Sondra Klauenberg of Baxter and gained 2 daughters from this union, Brenda Lea and Tammy Lorraine.  After her death, he met the love of his life, Betty Smith and married her on January 20, 1962.  To this union two daughters Connie LaJean and Lori Lynn were born.
Gene was a man of many talents, he ran a service station, he worked at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown, he ran heavy equipment for Kisers in Baxter, and finally after 21 years of running a road grader he retired from Jasper County in 1992.
In 1971, he moved his family to Monroe.  Just north of town Gene had a lot if interests outside work, most of them were another form of work...he rode and trained horses, coon hunted, restored old wooden windmills, built and ran many sawmills, he was a member of the Hawkeye Gas Engine Club, he built beautiful cabinets and furniture for his family as well as miniature windmills.
Gene was a gifted story teller.  He was always good for a laugh, no matter what the situation there was always a story to tell, sometimes 3 or 4. He was also famous for his "Geneizms".  A Geneizm, is an off the wall southern analogy.  For example, "That girl is as crazy as a peach orchard boar", most of the others are not appropriate to print, but if you ask us, we will tell you some.
Gene was everyone's favorite.  All the nieces and nephews considered him their favorite uncle.  He was the very best grandfather in the history of grandfathers.  He loved his grandchildren beyond measure.  He was the kind of person who's word was always good.  If he said he was gonna do it, he did it.  He was the epitome of what a good friend is.  He had a strong character and work ethic which he instilled into his daughters.
In their retirement years Gene and Betty enjoyed traveling and visiting friends and family.  They also spent a whole summer driving around Alaska.
After too many birthdays, Gene rejoined his wife on November 25, 2019, surrounded by his loved ones.  Left to honor his legacy are his girls Brenda DeHaai, Tammy (Dale) Schmidt, Connie (Patrick) Knowles, Lori (Brian) Carlyle.  His grandchildren Josh (Ashley) Warnell, Lucas (Hannah) Smith,  David (Lacy) Knowles, Danielle (Collins) Barber, Spencer (Jessica) Rinehart, Sydney Rinehart, Fredric (Rachel) Horstman, Zach Carlyle, Shawna (Joe) Leimbacher, Justin (Alexi) Carlyle, and Jordan Knowles, Gene's 9 great grandsons and 3 great granddaughters, his sisters Wilma Maness, Doris (Bob) Barton, and a multitude of family, good neighbors and friends to remember him.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, brothers Delmar and Jim Porter, sisters Vivian Pennington, Ruby Milligan, Fern Irvin, son-in-law Jay DeHaai, great grandson Legend Warnell, and his wife of 53 years Betty.
A Celebration of Life Service is being planned for a later date.
Johnson Funeral Service is honored to be assisting Gene's daughters with arrangements.

James Stevenson Muir - September 07, 1944 - May 08, 2019

Departed: 05/08/2019 (Monroe)
Obituary Preview: James Stevenson Muir (“Steve”), 74, was born in Airdrie, Lanarkshire Scotland, on September 7, 1944, to Andrew and Isobel Stevenson Muir.  Steve and his family immigrated to the United States when he was three years old.  The family first settled in What Cheer, Iowa, but shortly thereafter moved to Oskaloosa, where Steve grew up, attended school and graduated from Oskaloosa Senior High School in 1962.  After graduation, Steve joined the United States Air Force and served in Thailand during the Vietnam War.  Following military service, Steve returned to Iowa and began working on the manufacturing line at the Maytag Company in Newton where he worked until retirement.  Steve first married Roberta Lucas in Eddyville, Iowa, and they had one daughter.  Steve met his second wife-the love of his life-Betty Smits, in Pella, Iowa.  They were married in 1976 and lived for a brief time in Pella before moving to Newton. Steve had difficulty maintaining relationships with friends and family.  However, those who knew Steve on his best days recall his wittiness and God-given gift for extemporaneous rhymes about any person or subject matter.  His nieces will remember his ditty: “When all of a sudden, from out of the blue, came the man in the new, little, blue Subaru!”  Steve was generous with money, at times leaving large tips for servers, with a wink, a nod and a “Keep the change, Buddy!” He also enjoyed football, cuddling with his cats and driving a vintage Cadillac to buy a burger and fries at favorite fast food joints.  No regular burger would do —Steve always went for the largest menu options “I’ll have the Oinker burger with the Amana ham, please, and give me a vanilla shake and some extra fries with that, Buddy!”
Steve’s nieces and nephews fondly remember weekends in their childhood, when he used to entertain them with his Lionel trains and by playing chess.  A family favorite was playing Monopoly with Uncle Steve and Aunt Betty during the holidays.  He invariably cheated, hiding money under the game board. When others would land on his properties, he would jeer with a smirk, saying “Thank you, come again!” as they paid the last of their make-believe fortunes.
Steve passed away at Mercy One Des Moines on May 8, 2019.  Now at peace, he joins family members who preceded him in death: wife Betty, parents Andrew and Isobel, and brother Rev. William Muir.  Steve is survived by a daughter, Stephanie (Dostal) Gibson, a step-daughter, Angela Dostal, a brother Alastair (Lynn) Muir, a sister-in-law Helen Muir and multiple nieces and nephews.
The family recognizes Betty’s friend, Jill Clapper, who helped take care of Steve after Betty passed away. A graveside service will be held at 2PM on Monday, May 13, 2019 at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City, Iowa with interment following.  The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to:  National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Central Iowa, 416 Douglas Avenue, Suite 203, Ames, IA 50010
Johnson Funeral Service is honored to be providing arrangements for Steve's services.

Departed: 08/22/2015 (Monroe)
Obituary Preview: Betty Mae (Smith) Porter, 73, of Newton, formerly of Monroe died Saturday, August 22, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Betty was born July 23, 1942, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Leonard and Twila (Earhart) Smith.  She was raised in the Union, Whitten area and graduated from Union-Whitten High School in 1960.  In 1962, after a two week courtship with Gene Porter, Betty married the love of her life.  They were married 53 years.  To this union there were 4 daughters.  Betty retired in 1998 from Pella Corporation.  In their retirement, Gene and Betty travelled all over the western United States, even spending a month in Alaska.
Betty’s hobbies included playing cards, crafting, painting, Bingo and especially enjoyed attending Cowboy Church.
