Michael E. Hewitt - July 10, 1960 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (York)
Obituary Preview: In the early hours of Friday, April 26th, Michael E. Hewitt entered the arms of Jesus and reunited in Heaven with his son, Colby M. Hewitt, after a battle with cancer. In the weeks preceding his death Mike was surrounded by his closest friends and family members and spent time reminiscing about the past. We shared laughter, tears and healed our souls.
Mike was born in York County, Pennsylvania to Barbara E. Kottmyer and John H. Hewitt on July 10, 1960, and attended Dover Area High School. He had fond memories of spending time on his family’s farm as a child or with his grandpa. He met his wife, Carla, in high school and they married in April 1981 and welcomed their first child, Courtney, later that year. Mike was a proud and protective dad. Eight years later, in July 1989, Colby was born. Courtney and her dad would spend time together at shooting matches and Colby loved working with his dad restoring the GTO.
In December 2005, Mike earned his new title of Pappy when Robert was born. Robert was affectionately called sunshine by pap. Five years later Parker was born, and pap could be found pushing Parker in the swing or just holding him tightly. Malachi was born in 2012 and he rounded out pap’s three grandsons. Malachi loved to play trucks in the dirt with pap or just be outside running around at pap’s house. Pap’s face would light up whenever he would see his three grandsons.
Mike was a welder by trade and worked at numerous manufacturing companies in the York area. He last served as a welder for Navy equipment at York International.
Mike wasn’t always easy to love, he could be wildly frustrating and argumentative, but his closest friends stuck by him through everything. He could be found hosting garage parties, riding his Harley, or tinkering with something in his garage. He enjoyed hunting with his uncles and cousins and was a part of the 1000 Yard Benchrest Club. Mike enjoyed watching old westerns and whenever a Clint Eastwood movie marathon was on, you could find him in his lounge chair watching. He loved chicken corn soup and his Aunt Lynn’s chicken pot pie.
Mike is survived by a brother, Craig Hewitt, numerous brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, nieces, and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held and those closest to him will be notified of details.

James O. Pickard, Sr. - October 18, 1932 - April 21, 2024

Departed: 04/21/2024 (York)
Obituary Preview: James O. Pickard (“Jim”) passed peacefully in the early hours of April 21, 2024.
Jim’s 91 years of life were filled with faith, family, business, travel, friendship, public service and a relentless sense of humor. A devout Catholic and Knight of Malta, Jim’s faith was inspired by his parents and fostered by religious education that began at St. Dominic’s Parish School in Philadelphia, continued through graduation from St. Francis Preparatory School in Spring Grove and culminated with an MBA from the Father Sellinger School of Business at Loyola College of Maryland. We trust that Jim was met with open arms at the gates of Heaven where he is reunited with his family and friends who have gone before him.
In life, Jim was perhaps most well-known as the Chief Executive Officer of York Saw & Knife Co., a business that Jim owned and remained active in from 1969 until the time of his passing. However, Jim’s accomplishments were varied and went well beyond his career as an executive in the manufacturing industry. Jim was a devoted husband to the love of his life Mary Elizabeth (Bievenour) Pickard, with whom Jim celebrated 72 years of marriage. Jim was a generous father and grandfather to four children, 13 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. While running a company, Jim provided for his family, completed his education and remained a staunch supporter of all things Republican. A diplomat, Jim served as Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Commerce on the Cabinet of Governor Dick Thornburgh. A sage advisor, Jim was appointed to the Federal Home Loan Bank Board for two consecutive terms. A philanthropist, Jim supported many Catholic charities. A volunteer, Jim Chaired the Lancaster Convention Center Authority. In relaxation, Jim was a pilot, a boat captain and member of the Union League of Philadelphia for over 40 years.
In his travels Jim met Popes, Presidents and leaders of foreign nations although he most often boasted of his chance encounter with Megyn Kelly at the 21 Club in Manhattan. Those that knew Jim believed he was a better source for information than Google. Those left behind will miss his naughtiness, zest for life and his leadership. Jim had grand plans for life that he exceeded. He remains an inspiration to his family and friends who can only hope to carry his legacy forward. A hard act to follow, his wittiness knows no match. God speed Jim, we look forward to catching up with you and hearing more tales about the next chapter.
Funeral Mass to be held at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Lancaster, PA at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 25, 2024.  A luncheon will immediately follow mass at Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and funeral or memorial services.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for around 150-200 words.

Can I make corrections to an obituary after it's been published?

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the online platform. Some websites may archive obituaries indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period. Be sure to check the platform's policies before publishing.

Can I republish an old obituary for a anniversary or special occasion?

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

In cases where someone has passed away suddenly or at a young age, it's especially important to approach the obituary with sensitivity and compassion. Focus on celebrating their life and achievements, rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their death.

Some online platforms allow you to include links to videos, photo galleries, or other multimedia elements that showcase the deceased's personality or accomplishments. This can enhance the overall experience for readers.

What if I want to create a memorial website or page for my loved one?

There are many tools and platforms available that allow you to create a dedicated memorial website or page for your loved one. This can be a beautiful way to share memories and stories with others who knew them.

How do I ensure that my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?

A well-written obituary can help preserve your loved one's memory for years to come. Share it widely with friends, family, and community members, and consider creating a memorial website or page to continue celebrating their life.
