Ralph Lund - June 16, 1929 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Pittsburgh)
Obituary Preview: Ralph Bassinger Lund, age 94, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024, with his wife of 44 years, Patti Hughes, at his side. Also by his side was his son, John Lund of Harrisburg, and his daughter, Karen Barczak (Mark), of Wexford from his 25-year marriage to the late Mickey (Michelle) Leffler Lund. After growing up in Bisbee, North Dakota, his parents moved the family to Sacramento California where he graduated from San Juan High School. He was accepted into the University of California, Berkley, and received a degree in Engineering. An ALCOA manufacturing plant in California was his first job and he enjoyed a 43-year career with them. During his career, he relocated and lived in several cities in the U.S. and appreciated working abroad in multiple countries, concluding his working life at the main Pittsburgh headquarters. In retirement, he was inspired by friends and family to enjoy a wide range of activities. Fly Fishing with his brother-in-law, Lyle, and nephew Jon, was really like the movie “A River Runs Through It” -- water rushing around his waist-high waders. White water rafting events with Patti’s family always gave him a thrill. Golf outings with son-in-law, Mark and Patti’s cousin Paul were challenging – but his short game never improved. He loved traveling. His sister, Margaret, arranged numerous trips with friends and always included Patti and Ralph. He said he traveled around the world twice - listing 47 countries visited!! While his son was stationed in Germany, Ralph got to get a look at how well John could drive the autobahn often telling his Dad to just close his eyes and pray. He worked on the Board of the Pittsburgh Alcoa Retirees Club, even developing their website. Local history became a passion while working on the Board of Squirrel Hill Historical Society. He enjoyed all the Pittsburgh sports team events that he and Patti attended with Karen and Mark and friends Mike and Esta, even if they were sometimes disappointing.  Always very opinionated, he would say “the Pirates would be better next year if they had a new owner”. Exercise was important, so he and his Walking Group (ranging from one to 12 fabulous people) made the 3-1/2 mile trek around Squirrel Hill seven days a week for many years. The most enjoyable part of this was the coffeeshop ending where they would all eat and drink while discussing world events. There were so many family events over his long lifetime. Some sad -- the passing of his brother, sister, nephew, and several cousins. Some very happy – the California wedding of his great niece Kristen Walker , the christening of Patti’s nephew Tom’s first daughter in Hoboken, the 100th birthday party in Palm Springs that he organized for his sister, Margaret, the 90th birthday party for his brother, Graham, in Las Vegas, and the family gathering at his own 80th birthday in Lake Tahoe. Recently he would spend hours on the deck watching the clouds and the birds with his newest stray cat, Stretch, on his lap. All of these events made life so worthwhile. Ralph was strong willed and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. He was clever and full to the brim with knowledge gained through his life experiences: engineer, fisherman, sailor, and do-it yourself-er. He, with his wife Patti, as the apprentice, would fix or build anything. So, that is how he will be remembered with love and laughter. Arrangements entrusted to the John N. Elachko Funeral Home, 3447 Dawson St. Pittsburgh. PA 15213. Services will be private. Memorial donations can be made to either the Pittsburgh Community Food Bank or Tree Pittsburgh.

Stefanie Bruninghaus - September 02, 1966 - December 19, 2023

Departed: 12/19/2023 (Pittsburgh)
Obituary Preview: Steffi Bruninghaus lived life to the fullest. She was born in Mannheim, Germany on September 2, 1966, and grew up in that region. She spent the summers of her youth in Ollsen, a village in Northern Germany, surrounded by family, nature, and horses. She often referred to these summer stays as the happiest times of her life. Her love and intuitive understanding of animals was honed during these formative years. She became very skilled at dressage, with its close harmony between horse and human. She also was very good with dogs.
Following her studies at the University of Mannheim, Germany, Steffi moved to Pittsburgh in 1994 to pursue graduate studies in Intelligent Systems (Artificial Intelligence) at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research, guided by Kevin Ashley, focused on a still challenging problem: to make computers skilled at argumentation. In her hands, this tough nut began to crack! Although she eventually chose not to pursue a scientific career, she remained a scientist at heart and the work she did as a PhD student is still widely respected in international scientific research communities.
While at Pitt, she met her husband-to-be, Vincent Aleven, a graduate student in the same field. They married in 2004. They shared many passions, including classical music – they were avid visitors of the Pittsburgh Symphony – and backcountry hiking, with the Grand Canyon and Monongahela National Forest among their favorite destinations. Later, they would exchange their tent for the greater comfort of a log cabin, spending much time on the trails of Cook Forest, Pennsylvania.
Asked what she did in life, Steffi often said that her mission was to help her husband be successful. Yet she did so much more. She developed a passion for Middle Eastern dance and music. With her characteristic zeal, she immersed herself in the culture, often helping her friends and fellow students to sew costumes, learn choreography, and share the joy of dance. She was a founding member of Tribe Taksim, a local dance troupe with whom she performed frequently. Later, she developed the confidence to perform solo and delighted audiences with her passion and humor.
Spurred by a “walk-on cat” whom she welcomed into her house (“Skinny Cat”), she became very active in Pittsburgh’s animal shelter world, spending countless hours helping with a TNR program (trap, neuter, return) to help keep the city’s feral cat populations healthy. Many a time, she got up long before dawn to return cats that had been trapped and treated to their original city habitat. She was always immediately ready to help anyone who approached her with a cat problem. Meanwhile, she adopted many more cats into her house and developed close relations with many of them. During the pandemic, she trained online to be a professional cat behaviorist.
Steffi was known for her outspoken and eloquent advocacy of causes she believed in, including the humane treatment of animals, environmental causes, and keeping Frick Park (a gem of a park in Pittsburgh) wild and free of development.
She embraced Pittsburgh as her second home, with cats taking on local names such as Parkway and Forbes, after the places where they were found. She also became a passionate Steelers fan. Her love for the Steelers ended abruptly, however, when the Steelers signed a player with a history of flagrant animal abuse. She was at the stadium with protest signs.
Upon her grandmother Brigitte Bartsch’s passing several years ago, she inherited the family’s house in Ollsen. She had it beautifully renovated and foresaw spending much time there, together with her husband.
About two and a half years ago, she received the shocking news that she had breast cancer. She approached her battle with cancer with the same fire with which she once told her husband he should defend his scientific work: “like a lioness defends her kittens.” Very sadly, her battle came to an abrupt and much-too-early end on December 19, 2023. She passed in the presence of her very good friend Kerri and her husband.
She still had many plans. She touched many lives and would have touched many more.
Shortly before her passing, she got to travel to Germany for a long-awaited reunion with her father. She spent a few very happy weeks in Ollsen, enjoying the newly renovated house and making many happy hikes in the woods she knew from her youth. She reconnected with her roots and the place where she was happiest.
She is survived by her father, Wolfgang Brüninghaus, her stepmother, Karin Kellenbenz, both of Wald Michelbach, Germany, her brother, Andreas Brüninghaus of Wiehl, Germany, and her husband of 19 years, Vincent Aleven of Pittsburgh.
The cremation has taken place. An event to celebrate Steffi’s life will be organized in January. Details will be announced. Her final resting place will be in Ollsen, Germany. In lieu of sending flowers, please consider making a donation to charities that fight for causes that Steffi strongly believed in: The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy Upstream Pittsburgh Humane Animal Rescue Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
Her energy, her wit, her intelligence, her compassion, and her embrace of life are already very sorely missed – and will remain so. Celebration of the Life of Stefanie Bruninghaus
When: Saturday, January 6, 2024, 2pm until we are done celebrating. Where: Schenley Park Visitor Center
The event is an informal final service. The cremation has already taken place in quietude.
We wish all to share in this celebration so you are most welcome to bring or invite others who knew Steffi and would like to share in this celebration. Stephen Jeremiah Buczek - February 23, 1976 - July 30, 2023

Departed: 07/30/2023 (Pittsburgh)
Obituary Preview: Stephen was born on the 23rd of February, 1976 in Princeton, NJ; the second child of Stephen W. and Rosemary Buczek. After moving to Berkeley Heights, NJ then to Milford, NJ, Stephen (Steve) attended and graduated from Plumstead Christian School in 1995 then attended and graduated from the Pennsylvania Gunsmith School in Pittsburgh, PA. He lived in Fountainville, PA until his passing on July 30th, 2023.
Steve was a phenomenal craftsman; gifted, detail oriented and persevering, a trait which would follow and define him throughout his life. He was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease during his time at the Gunsmith School, and battled mightily till complications finally took him in that very same city.
While his physical limitations may have defined him to some people, Steve was never one to focus on those; he was always invested in his small circle of friends; he LOVED children and was always giving random, thoughtful gifts. He worked at a premier gun shop in New Jersey until his health became a deterrent to consistent employment, but that never stopped him from continuing to work on small projects in his workshop as he was able. Steve’s life was marked with many health challenges, setbacks and frustrations, and while many would (and truly did) question “why”, Steve never wavered in his faith.
He was one of those people who knew a little about everything; random facts and interesting details that most of us miss. His faith was deep, sure, and grounded, even in the questioning he only prayed for self-control, courage, peace, surrender and contentment.
Steve will be greatly missed by his parents, Stephen and Rosemary Buczek, his two sisters (Christine Kitsch and Rose Stapley), two brothers (Timothy and Donald Buczek) along with their respective spouses, Bill, Ben, Kelli and Jessica, his 12 nieces and nephews, and Hilltown Baptist Church family. While we mourn his presence here on earth, we rejoice in his presence before the King of Kings.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 10:30 am at Hilltown Baptist Church, 26 Upper Church Road, Chalfont, Pennsylvania 18914. A luncheon will follow the service.

She used her English degree as a marketing and communications writer for several corporations including Honeywell Bull, Banyan Systems and IBM, retiring in 2011.
Jill was an avid reader throughout her life and enjoyed sharing her love for literature with friends and family. Her hobbies included horseback riding, photography and golf. Throughout her life, she enjoyed cooking and exploring new culinary experiences, still, her deep connection to food remained grounded in her family’s Carpatho-Rusyn roots, always celebrated and revered at Easter and Christmas holidays. A true dog-lover, Jill’s canine companions included Tubbs, Katie, Jenny and Morgan.
Jill moved back to Pittsburgh following the death of her husband, Jack and enjoyed her retirement years living near her sister.
