James L. Holt - June 29, 1952 - October 07, 2023

Departed: 10/07/2023 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: Jim was born in Wichita, Kansas on June 29, 1952, to James ‘Bud’ and Nova Holt. Jim’s parents and siblings – (his twin) June (Derald) Kerschen, Connie Kemper and Tim Holt - have predeceased him, as well as father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Jean Nelson, and sister-in-law, Kristi Nelson. Jim is survived by wife, Marva; daughter, Deanna Unruh; son, Ryan Nelson Holt; grandchildren, Banner, Piper and River Unruh; and nieces Amanda Kerschen, Tiffany Cowell, Scarlett and Orchid Holt.
Jim’s siblings reported that Jim always made it very clear that he was the oldest (and maybe the bossiest?!?) sibling. Jim was very fond and appreciative of his Grandma Boyce who lived with them for awhile and “invited” him to quilt, eat dandelion greens and a lot of oatmeal, and learn how to set the table. Jim’s family moved around the Wichita/Pratt, Kansas vicinity, finally settling in Pratt where Jim began working at the local truckstop, washing dishes, at the age of 12. Jim graduated from Pratt High School – the fighting Greenbacks (frogs!) - in 1970.
Jim attended Pratt Community College and worked at Alco in Pratt and Wichita before selling his beloved Pontiac GTO so he could attend Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri. He met Marva Nelson there and they married on October 5, 1974. As a Kansas boy marrying into a family of avid Husker fans, Jim decided that he would be an Oklahoma Sooner fan to keep things interesting. It took only a few years before he decided that it would be more fun to yell and scream (and get worried if Nebraska lost the coin toss) at the same time as everyone else in the family, and thus began a lifelong Husker tradition of celebrating and mourning together, particularly with his parents-in-love, Frank and Jean. In recent years, Jim’s neurologist recommended against drinking alcohol, but Marva felt that he deserved one beer during Husker football games during the last coaching era to lessen the pain.
Jim worked at various jobs in Sioux City, Des Moines, Moline, IL and Grand Island until 1986 when the family moved to Omaha. Jim finally found his niche when he began working as a courier at Capital Express where he spent the last 25 years of his career. It perfectly aligned with his Type A personality and the fact that he loved being the solution to someone’s delivery problem. Jim often volunteered to serve in a ‘helper’ capacity in most any circumstance, especially if it involved serving food. Jim was also the quintessential ‘people person’, never knowing a stranger. In fact, ‘winning over’ a stranger thoroughly energized him, including the hospice nurse he met just a few weeks ago. Jim very much enjoyed being with his friends … even when they were no longer a stranger.
Jim’s life changed dramatically in March, 2019 when he was diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia. As his world grew smaller and smaller, he faced each day as well as the future with courage and didn’t complain or ask, “Why me?!?” He trusted God with whatever each day held. He made certain that Marva knew how much he loved and appreciated her every day. Through God’s grace, Jim finished well. Very, very well.
MEMORIAL SERVICE Friday, October 13, 2023, at 11:00am at the Pacific Street Chapel with the family receiving guests one hour prior to the service.

Maurice L. "Morrie" Korthals - July 03, 1939 - September 24, 2023

Departed: 09/24/2023 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: Maurice “Morrie” Lee Korthals, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 24, 2023 at the Ovations Heartwood Preserve. Morrie was born on July, 3, 1939 to Fred and Dena Korthals in George, Iowa. He was the seventh of eight children. The family farmed around the NW Iowa & SW Minnesota area, where Morrie developed his hard work ethic. He attended and graduated from Brewster High School in 1957, where he met and dated the homecoming queen, Ruth Duncan. Morrie attended Northwestern College and played football for one year, before enlisting in the United States Air Force. After completing Basic Training in San Antonio, Texas, he was assigned to the Strategic Air Command in Bellevue, NE. Morrie and Ruth were married on April 20, 1960. Over the next eight years and four states later, they were blessed with four children.

In 1975, he began selling real estate. For the next nearly-50 years, Morrie helped countless people to buy and sell their homes. He has always said he never had a “job” because he always loved what he did – and it showed.
Morrie’s greatest joy in life has always been family. For their children and grandchildren, he made every effort to support them in their church, school, and sporting activities. He loved those opportunities to encourage them and let them know they were very special. As a die-hard Nebraska Cornhusker fan, for several years he rarely missed a home game and traveled to many away games as well. Morrie was a member of Westwood Community Church for 50 years. Morrie has always been a man of action. If Morrie was involved, he found a way to get things done. His passion and drive could be overwhelming at times but it was always done with the best intentions. Words don't do enough to describe what he meant to his family and everyone that knew him. He loved The Lord, loved his family, and loved others.

Lula G. Lybarger - February 14, 1934 - September 14, 2023

Departed: 09/14/2023 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: Celebration of Life for Lula Gale Lybarger
Lula “Lu” Gale Lybarger, age 89, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2023 surrounded by her loving family in Omaha, Nebraska. Lu was born, along with her twin sister Lola, on February 14, 1934 in Arcadia, Nebraska to Frank and Irene (Swayze) White.
Lu grew up in Arcadia, Nebraska and married her high school sweetheart, Max Lybarger on July 4, 1954. After moving to Lincoln, Nebraska, Max graduated from Wesleyan University and became employed by the VA Hospital in 1957. In 1966, the couple moved to Virginia where Max began his administrative career with the VA Hospital. Lu was a dedicated VA wife for 38 years accompanying Max around the United States. Lu was always responsible for coordinating all the packing and moving for the 9 various moves. Their travels included Falls Church, VA; Livermore, CA; Fresno, CA; Vienna, VA; Lexington, KY; Pittsburgh, PA; Santa Monica, CA; Tacoma, WA; and finally back home to Lincoln in 1979. Lu called their daughter, Nan, attending Kearney State College and happily sang the Nebraska fight song to announce their transfer back to Lincoln! After 40 years in Lincoln, the couple moved to Lakeside Village in Omaha to be closer to Nan and her family.
Lu is survived by her husband Max Lybarger, daughter Nan Garrison and son-in-law Mike Garrison, grandchildren Kristin Reed (husband Josh), and Grant Garrison; plus two very special grandsons Brayden and Landon Reed. Those “two little boys”, as she referred to them, brought so much joy and smiles to their Great Grandma. Lu was happiest when her family of 9 would celebrate birthdays, holidays or just going out for dinner followed by a Runza chocolate ice cream cone.
Although her family is biased, we believe Lu was one of the kindest, gentle and generous people we know. She was always worried about others before herself, wishing success for everyone and bringing joy to those around her. She was frequently known to slip a $20 bill in someone’s pocket on for no reason but to help someone out. That is just who Lu was.
Travel and friends were also an important part of Lu’s life as they were fortunate to be able to see so much of the country with their long-time friends the Wusters, Smiths and Crewdsons. Finally, Lu was an avid and die-hard Husker fan from football to volleyball to men’s and women’s basketball. She would read every article word by word she could get her hands on. We joked that we would put her up against just about anyone on Husker trivia or most sports topics! Near the end of life when her speech was limited, she fired up one more time to say “Go Big Red” with a little attitude and sass for the last time!
Lu was preceded in death by her parents, sister Lucille Minne (husband Lewis), brother Thomas White (wife Evelyn), sister Gertrude Kyron (husband George), brother Wayne White (wife Wilma), brother Calvin White, and twin sister Lola Wilmot (husband Paul). Though we mourn the loss of our wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, we find solace in the memories we shared and the profound impact she had on our lives. Her love will continue to guide and inspire us, and she will forever hold a very special place in our hearts. We’ll always call you our family’s matriarch just to keep the teasing and smiles going a bit. We love you! Memorials: Arcadia Cemetery, Arcadia, Nebraska
