ANDREW FRANKLIN 'FRANKIE' BRYAN - March 31, 1969 - March 14, 2022

Departed: 03/14/2022 (DeFuniak Springs)
Obituary Preview: Mr. Andrew Franklin Bryan, better known to us as Frankie Bryan, left his Earthly body on the morning of Monday, March 14, 2022, at his home in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.  He was 52 years old when he entered his eternal home.  Frankie was born on Monday, March 31,1969, as the only child, to N. Dewitt Bryan and Barbara Jean (Arnold) Bryan Vann at the Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Frankie may have been an only child, but he had many cousins and four stepsisters to find mischief with throughout his childhood.  To hear him tell it he was always the one who ended up being pushed in the lake by his sister Jackie, dodging a punch from his sister Melony, or trying to stay ahead of the shenanigans that his cousins, Doug Bryan and Jimmy Miller, had in for him when they were together at Granny Bryan’s house.  He said you never wanted to mess with his cousin LaDawn (Bryan) Marse because she would fight you like a boy and his sisters Kim and Josie were always fun to pick on to see if he could get them in trouble when they were going anywhere with all of three of them in the backseat of the car, a resounding “Stop Touching Me” always went along with this story to include his mom trying to reach around from the front seat to pop one of them, which ended in an interesting game of bob and weave to make sure you weren’t the one she managed to grab.  Frankie always talked of weekends spent with his cousins, Kim (Miller) Rice and Doug Bryan, sharing their favorite beverages and life events since they were last together.  He loved each of them for the parts they had played in his life and the memories he shared with each of them.
Frankie loved to fish! He would often reminisce about fishing trips with his uncle Orville and his cousins down to the fishing hole by Granny’s house with an ole cane pole and that one of the best lessons he ever learned was to pay attention when Granny Bryan was a castin’.  You see there was this one time that he ended up with a wiggler on a hook in his cheekbone because he walked behind her during one of her epic cane pole casts.  When he told the story he always had to show you the scar he had to prove it.  Frankie continued his love of fishing into adulthood.  He was always happy with a fishing rod in his hand and it didn’t matter if he caught anything or perhaps it was because of the time he spent with his dad fishing that he loved the most.
Frankie developed a love of cooking early in life as he spent many hours with his Memaw Arnold in the kitchen as a child.  You could find him pulled up on a wooden stool beside her at the stove or sitting up on the counter beside her snapping beans, shelling peas, or doing whatever task his little hands could manage. Frankie had fond memories of Sunday dinners at his Memaw’s house which usually consisted of fried chicken with all the fixins.  He was right proud of the fact that he knew how to cut up a chicken at an early age.  Frankie took great pride in his culinary creations and always encouraged others to expand their palate and to be adventurous and try something new and exotic.
Frankie was also a huge, die-hard Florida Gator Football fan.  He spent many a Saturday watching college football and reeving his friends about how their teams were doing.  He always said Florida Gators were his favorite team and his second favorite was any team playing against the Georgia Bulldogs or Florida State Seminoles.
Frankie is preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Jean (Arnold) Vann, and by his maternal grandparents, Bennie and Lila (Gressette) Arnold and his paternal grandparents, Andrew and Gladys (Peters) Bryan.  Frankie is survived by his wife and soulmate, Donna Honish-Bryan, three children, two stepsons and two grandchildren, daughter, Susannah Bryan plus grandson, Xander Clark and granddaughter, Lily Rabb of Ackworth, GA, son, Benjamin and wife, Celina Bryan of Dallas, GA, daughter, Makenzie Bryan of Kingston, TN, stepson, Austin Brumit of Hiram, GA and stepson, Curtis Rice of DeFuniak Springs, FL.  Frankie is also survived by his father and stepmother, N. Dewitt and Sarah Bryan of Freeport, FL, his stepfather Joe Vann of DeFuniak Springs, FL, his stepsisters, Melony (Blackwell) Jacobs of Summerville, South Carolina, Jackie (Blackwell) Anderson of DeFuniak Springs, FL, Josie (Vann) and Richard Billington of Las Vegas, NV and Kimberly (Vann) and husband Rob Thrasher of Las Vegas, NV.  Frankie is also survived by two brother-in-laws and a sister-in-law, Joseph and wife, Amy Honish of DeFuniak Springs, FL, Denise (Fannin) and husband, Bobby Rodgers of Freeport, FL and Jimmy and wife, Jennifer Fannin of Freeport, FL and a host of nephews and nieces. Frankie had hundreds of friends he considered family including Chad Davis, Craig Summers, David Vogl, Jeff Atkisson and Craig Anthony.  Frankie was a member of Rock Baptist Church of Dallas, GA.  The family would like to give a special thanks to his sister-in-law, Denise (Fannin) Rodgers, his father-in-law, Michael and wife Shirley Honish, his Family Physician, Dr. Garry Banks and staff of Niceville, FL, his Oncologist, Dr. Olu Gbolahan located at UAB of Birmingham and the staff of Emerald Coast Hospice for the loving and compassionate care they gave to our beloved Frankie during his three year battle with colon cancer.

ROBERT MONROE "Snooky" THOMAS, JR. - October 07, 1953 - January 20, 2022

Departed: 01/20/2022 (DeFuniak Springs)
Obituary Preview: Robert Monroe "Snooky" Thomas, Jr. passed away unexpectedly in the early morning hours of Thursday, January 20, 2022 in the Emergency Room of Healthmark Regional Medical Center.  He was born October 7, 1953 in DeFuniak Springs, the son of Robert Thomas, Sr. and Vivian Jordan Trahan.  A lifelong resident of the area, Snooky attended Walton County Schools and graduated with Walton Senior High School's Class of 1971 where he was active in all sports and excelled in basketball.  He was always interested in music which became a great part of his life as a drummer.  He was a glass cutter by trade but his love of music took him on many paths.  He was a member of several local bands, Southern Soul,  Sunset Sity (later known as Kicker) and most recently Off The Wall Band.   Because of his expertise as a drummer Snooky landed a job with Carnival Cruise Lines in the entertainment business.  All who knew Snooky, family, friends, former classmates, co-workers, co-band members knew him as a man full of life, full of joy and ready to help anyone as much as he could.  Family members say Snooky was excellent on the grill and only the very bravest would challenge him to a game of horseshoes.  The early 70's, especially in the Deep South were turbulent times in America but within the small community that Walton County is of friends and neighbors "race" was not the predominate factor that determined friendships;  Snooky saw people for who they were and people saw Snooky for he was and what they saw, they liked and he did the same.
Among survivors are Snooky's wife, Sandra Marie Lewis Johnson Thomas, his son, Robert Monroe Thomas, III and wife Gina and grandchildren and great grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive. SARA NELL PEARSON - June 23, 1942 - January 08, 2022

Departed: 01/08/2022 (DeFuniak Springs)
Obituary Preview: Mrs. Sara Nell Pearson, age 79 of the Liberty Community of North Walton County passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, January 8, 2022 in Ascension Sacred Heart Bay in Panama City surrounded by her family.   She was born June 23, 1942 in Florala, Alabama the daughter of Horace Cecil Hall and Mable Louise Harrison Hall.  Sara Nell grew up in the Liberty Community on the family’s farming operation and attended Walton County Schools, graduating with Walton’s Class of 1960.  Any who knew Cecil Hall knew that he provided well for his family, but “to whom much is given, much is required”, so Sara Nell knew the meaning of hard work.  One afternoon Sara Nell and her sister went to the “picture show” as it was called in that day and upon leaving the theater an old classmate of Sara Nell grabbed the hem of her dress and told her to sit down and chat a while.  Truth is, as family legend recalls the incident, the handsome young suitor was actually trying to grab the hem of Sara Nell’s sisters dress.  But, not to tempt fate, six months later, the suitor, Milton M. Pearson, Jr. and Sara Nell Hall were married in the courthouse in Andalusia, Alabama, a marriage that would span some 59 years and produce two daughters and three grandchildren.  The “Crisis” in Viet Nam was in its heyday and during the height of the war, young guys like Milton were being drafted right and left, unless, that is, they were still in school.  Milton got wind that his name was about third from the top for the next draft so he went back to college at Troy State Teacher’s College and got his degree, which, frankly he should have done in the first place.  With that degree he was able to secure a very lucrative job at Site C-6 making about three times the normal pay of the day.  Paid every two weeks, his first check, a little over two hundred dollars, which believe it or not was a fantastic salary for the 60’s, he faithfully brought that first pay check home to Sara Nell and half of the check was immediately put into savings/investment.  Sara Nell from that day forward was the Chief Financial Officer of the Pearson family household.   All girls in the 60’s were multi talented and Sara Nell was no exception.  She cooked, she hunted, she managed the household, she worked in her flower beds and she made certain that the Hall Family Tradition of “hard working Christians” spilled over into her family.  She taught the adult women’s class and was the training union instructor at church.  Because of her love of beauty in God’s creation she opened and operated Pearson Florist and Gifts until ill health prevailed.  Never-the-less Sara Nell never lost her zest for life, her love of people, her caring and sincere compassion for others and love for the excitement of  Atmore, Alabama.   Sara Nell lived every moment of her life and when she could fight no longer, in the early morning hours of January 8th, she left to go make ready a place in paradise for those whom she loved so dearly on Earth.
Among survivors are her husband, Milton, her daughters Tonya Davis and husband Pete and Sonya Alford and husband Alex.  Her grandchildren, Jeremy, Allie and Hayden; her brother, James Cecil Hall and wife Ann and her sister, Shirley Ward and husband Bruce. Among those asked to serve as pallbearers are Dalton Bodie, Garrett Bodie, Adam Hall, Will Hall, Hayden Alford and A.J. Neal.   Floral arrangements are being accepted.  A time of visitation will be Tuesday, January 11, 2022 from  11 until Noon in Cluster Springs Baptist Church with the funeral beginning at Noon with Reverend David Amason and Reverend Russell Hughes officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hall Family Plot in Cluster Springs Cemetery.  Friends and family may go on line to view obituaries, offer condolences and sign the guest register at jerryevansfuneralhome.com

EDNA MOORE SCONIERS - September 15, 1931 - December 26, 2021

Departed: 12/26/2021 (DeFuniak Springs)
Obituary Preview: Mrs. Edna Sconiers, age 90 a lifelong resident of DeFuniak Springs passed away Sunday, December 26, 2021 at the home of her daughter surrounded by her family.  She was born September 15, 1931 the daughter of Edward and Mary McDonald Moore.  Edna’s father was run over and killed when Edna was very young so her mother raised her and her sister as a widowed single mom.  As Edna tells the story she and her mom and sister lived on one corner and a guy by the name of Ed Sconiers lived on the other corner.  Ed would come over and chop firewood for the widowed mom and Edna would always be busy around the wood pile when Ed would come over.  She attended Walton County Schools and worked for a time at Lightfoot’s Drug Store and later at Service Drugs.  Eventually, the time she spent loitering around the wood pile while Ed was busy chopping paid off and she and Ed were married, a union that would span some forty-four years, produce four children, eleven grandchildren, thirty three great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren in addition to literally thousands and thousands, if not millions of Pub Burgers.  You see, Ed and Edna took over the Tastee Freeze in 1963 after Ed, who at the time was the Lance Cookie Man, heard that Mr. King was ready to get out of the restaurant business.  Now a DeFuniak Springs Landmark, the hard work and dedication that Ed and Edna had begun together remains in the Sconier’s Family and is known far and wide for the same quality of food and service that has existed for three generations.  After Ed’s death on September 8,1993 Edna still remained semi active at the “Freeze”  but slowly began to transition away from the everyday routine.   At home, she finally had a chance to enjoy daytime television and soon became a fan of  Maury and Dr. Phil.  It is hard to believe, but according to the family Edna is known for her cooking skills for things other  than Pub Burgers, for instance, her chicken and rice cannot be duplicated, and there are other things like her cornbread dressing and her dumplings but her trademark dish remains her chicken and rice.   Finally in retirement she also had more time to read.  An avid reader of Christian topics deepened her love of her Lord and Savior.  All who knew Edna knew of her constant and abiding faith, her commitment to her husband and her family and her love for her friends, neighbors and fellowman.  Edna always minded her own business which made her the loveable wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and person she was.  She is predeceased by her husband Ed Sconiers, her son, Glen Sconiers, her sister Hazel Pope and two great grandchildren, Michael and Julian.
Among survivors are her children, Pat Thompson and husband Kenneth, Tim Sconiers and wife Debbie, Tommy Sconiers and wife Mary Jane.  Her grandchildren, Robin, Amy and Dennie, Stacey and Christopher, Steven and Tiffany, Emilee, Glen and Amanda, Josh and Amanda, Jed and Crystal, Thomas and Carla, Eric and Hilary and Rebecca.  Thirty three great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren, her daughter-in-law Colleen Sconiers and her brothers-in-law, Woodrow "Buck" Sconiers and Paul Sconiers also survive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral arrangements, and any charitable organizations or causes they supported.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community members. They provide a sense of closure and allow people to pay their respects to the deceased. Obituaries can also be a valuable tool for genealogists and historians, as they provide insight into a person's life and legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also offer assistance in writing and publishing obituaries.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial contributions, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, an obituary ranges from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be published online or in a specialized publication.
