Obituary Preview: Rev. Edwin C. Giles, III, 56, of Pleasant Mount, passed away suddenly on Sunday afternoon, July 18, 2021 at home, due to natural causes. He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, the former Christine A. Natishak. They were married on June 1, 1985.
Born August 27, 1964 in Carbondale, he was the son of Edwin C. Giles, Jr. of Waymart, and Patricia (Price) Eldred of Equinunk.
Ed graduated from Forest City Regional High School in 1982. Together, he and Chris raised a beautiful family which was the center of Ed’s life. He went on to earn an associate’s degree from Keystone College to become a Micro-Computer Specialist. As his children grew, Ed never failed to take an active role in everything his children pursued. He attended all of their activities from sports to the arts. Ed coached the children’s soccer and softball teams, and at one time served as the president of the local youth soccer league.
In 2003, Ed began what would become one of his greatest joys in life: he entered the ministry as a Licensed Local Pastor of the United Methodist Church. Throughout the years, he had the pleasure of serving as the Pastor of Union Dale, Pleasant Mount, Whites Valley, Orson, and Prompton Community United Methodist Churches. Ed was currently serving as the Pastor of Prompton; in fact, he led worship and preached his final sermon on Sunday morning, just hours before the Lord called him home.
Ed continued to find interest in his children’s activities into their adulthood, including volunteering in the Forest City Regional Mask and Hammer Drama Club where he consistently helped with everything from set-building to accent and dialect coaching. He loved to celebrate “Talk Like a Pirate Day,” and would want everyone to know that it comes around on September 19th, “this year and every year.” Ed was an avid reader. He was a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and also followed the Cincinnati Reds and the Philadelphia Union.
For the majority of his adult life, Ed worked in Information Technology. For the past ten years, he was a Master Equipment Support Field Technician for Benco Dental.
Ed will be remembered for his profound and unfailing love. This was perhaps most evidenced in his unquestionable devotion to his wife Chris; he would do anything for her, whether it was something he enjoyed or not.
Ed is also survived by three children, all of whom he adored: Michelle (Shelley) Giles of Whites Crossing, Scott Giles and his companion Doria of New York City, and Matt Giles of Pleasant Mount; seven siblings: David, Lynda, Patti, James, Tami, Deborah, and Robert; his father’s wife, Donna; his mother’s husband, Leon Eldred; several nieces, nephews, and a large extended family.

Obituary Preview: James J. Bourke March 20, 2021
James J. Bourke (80) of Jamestown, PA, passed away at the Meadville Medical Center in Meadville, PA, after suffering a massive stroke.
Jim was born on August 15, 1940, in Honesdale, PA, to the late Charles O. Bourke and Mary Fives Bourke.
He attended the one-room Beere School from first through eighth grade. All 14 students walked daily to and from school, as there was no such thing as busing or snow days. When it snowed, everyone including the teacher, Thelma Beers, brought their sleds and went sleigh riding during the lunch hour. Upon completion of eighth grade, all the Wayne County students were required to take a countywide entrance test for high school. Jim placed first. He completed his high school education at Honesdale High School in 1958.
After high school, Jim joined the US Navy where he was trained as a Shipboard Electronics Technician. He served four years, mostly on destroyers, and then took a position with Consolidated Edison Electric Company in New York City.
Desiring to further his education, Jim decided to go back to school with the aid of the GI Bill. He was accepted at Mansfield State College where three of his siblings were already attending. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1970 with a major in English.
Jim, eventually, traveled to San Diego where he secured a job as an Electrical Technician with the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company. While living in CA, he developed an interest in running and competed in races ranging from 5K through marathons. Jim bought a houseboat on Mission Bay where he lived until his retirement in 2002. From his houseboat, he was able to sea kayak around the bay and along the southern coast of CA. He greatly enjoyed participating in kayaking and scuba clubs.
After his retirement, Jim purchased a large motorhome and toured many parts of the US, volunteering throughout the US National and State Park systems. While traveling, he enjoyed biking, kayaking and fresh water fishing. One trip took him to a remote Pacific island shaped like an aircraft carrier, a training ground for pilots during WWII. Here he was able to photograph whales breaching and seabirds hovering up close. He soon became an accomplished landscape and wildlife photographer. He loved nature and all its wonders, taking many exquisite photos of birds, deer, elk, foxes, sunrises and sunsets. His home was filled with images of his wilderness journeys.
He read voraciously from the classics to sci-fi to best sellers to Carl Sagan’s Cosmos.
Jim is survived by his brother Charles (Bucky) Bourke, his sisters Sally Urmanec and husband Marsden, and Joan Eidenier and husband John; as well as nephew David Zelkowitz and nieces Julie Garman, Allison Zelkowitz and husband Mike Bruce and Mary Brown and husband Adrian, as well as several great nephews and nieces.
