James F. Hawver - July 28, 1929 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Westlake)
Obituary Preview: James Frederick Hawver was born July 28, 1929 and died April 27, 2024. He was a graduate of Western Reserve University, College of Architecture and spent more than 40 years practicing architecture in the Cleveland area. Jim won several awards for design and use of materials over his years in partnership with Arthur Lawrence and, later, with his own firm, James F. Hawver and Associates. Among his more rewarding projects were Port Clinton National Bank, interior projects with Cuyahoga Savings and Eaton Corporation, plus regional banks for Union Savings.A bank project in Pennsylvania made him more sensitive to the culture of the Amish and the simple accommodations needed to make banking easier. Prior to this experience, Jim had worked on an exploratory project in Liberia with a team of architects and engineers from Dalton & Dalton. The project involved a university using indigenous materials. He would later call the experience “Life changing.” Jim became an ardent supporter of diversity and accommodation in building and landscape design.During the post WWII years, Jim served as a member of General Macarther’s Honor Guard in Japan. This early experience at just age 17 made him question the value of war which brought so much devastation to countries and their people. It was a conflict he would struggle with throughout life.Jim is survived by wife, Bonnie K. Hawver, sisters Janet Raabe (Rolly Raabe) and Judi Stefan (Richard Stefan), plus several nieces and a nephew. His children, Jeffrey James Hawver (Linda Gaydos), Leigh Smith (Jozef Kunstek) and Melanie Deininger (William Deininger) were central to his life. In addition, Jim was blessed with grandchildren, Anne Smith, Hilary Schleter, Jessica Leon (Jose, aka Joito Leon), Kimberly Deininger, Jason Deininger (Brittany Deininger) and great grandchildren, Jowell Leon, Jailene Leon, Jaydah Leon, Rowan Schleter, and James Schleter who remain a part of his loving legacy.Arrangements to honor Jim’s life will be made at a later date by the family. Those who wish to acknowledge his memory may make donations to Hospice of the Western Reserve, West Campus.

A dedicated global traveler, Shirley’s favorite international destination was France and she was always engaged in learning more about French history and culture. Her first language was French, and throughout her life, Shirley continued to speak and read French and, during a period in her career, to teach French courses for young people.
Her curiosity, passion, and cosmopolitanism were manifest in her diverse career, which included work as a travel agent, positions with international airlines and at the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, time as a teacher and a tutor, and service with multiple international companies that allowed her to draw on both her interpersonal and language skills.
Above all, Shirley loved her family. She cherished her husband, Hani, and regaled many with stories of their global jet setting in the early years of their long and loving marriage. She was a dedicated daughter, companion, and caregiver to her mother, Nadine, with whom she lived in Nadine’s final years. Her pride and admiration for her sons, Sean and Marc, was limitless.
A service and celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at Jenkins Funeral Chapel, 2914 Dover Center Rd, Westlake, OH 44145 on Saturday, March 16 at 3pm.
