Departed: 04/13/2022 (Peterborough)
Obituary Preview: Susette (Adams) Villaume, 90, was called home to God on April 13, 2022.
Sue was born in New Haven, CT to John A. and Mabel (Rice) Adams. She grew up in New London, and Norwich, CT, and graduated from the Norwich Free Academy in 1950. She attended the University of Connecticut prior to St Luke’s School of Nursing in NYC, from which she graduated in 1954.
She married Henry F Villaume in 1954. They lived in Charleston, SC and Boothbay, ME during his Navy years, when they welcomed their son, Rick. They settled in Peterborough, NH in 1957. Daughter Betsy and son Peter joined Rick while the family lived in Peterborough.
After several years in Emmaus, PA, Sue and her family returned to NH, this time to the Mount Washington Valley – to a lovely White Mountain cottage in Intervale, where Sue and Henry lived until 2016, when Henry passed away. Sue remained in the home until 2017, when she returned to Peterborough, near her son, Rick, and daughter, Betsy. Most recently, Sue lived in a care home in Warner, NH.
Always active in her local Episcopal Church, Sue taught Sunday School in Emmaus, PA and at Christ Church in N. Conway, NH. Sue was also an active and long-time Altar Guild member at Christ Church.
One of Sue’s favorite activities was ice skating. She taught a number of local children how to skate. She was a supporter of the Ham Arena in Conway, NH and skated there regularly, including supporting the local figure skating group.
Perhaps her second favorite physical activity was swimming. Sue was a regular at the White Mountain Aquatic Center. She continued to enjoy swimming at the Bond Wellness Center after returning to Peterborough.
Sue was a lifelong needlewoman, as all the women in her family have been. She most enjoyed knitting, sewing, quilting, cross stitch, and crewel embroidery. Sue’s English smocked outfits for young children were sold through the NH League of Craftsmen and by special order. She was a member of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America, and she was actively involved in the early days of the Smocking Arts Guild of America, participating at the national board level.
Sue was also an avid reader, especially of mysteries and biography. She enjoyed reading so much, that she took on a part-time job at the North Conway (Pope Memorial) Library.
She was fascinated by genealogy and spent many years documenting the Adams (paternal) side of her family back many generations. She was a member of the New England Genealogical Society for many years.
We will miss her.
Sue leaves her son, Rick, and daughter-in-law, Debra Sidebottom of Peterborough, NH; daughter, Betsy Villaume, and son-in-law Ken MacLeod of Hancock, NH; son Peter, and daughter-in-law Laura of Bartlett, NH; grandson Patrick of Easton, PA; sister-in-law Lizzie Villaume of St. Charles, IL; nephew David Walker and his family – Kate, Ellie, Marc and Jake – of St. Charles, IL; niece Katherine Walker of Los Angeles, CA; Laura’s family – Amanda Carroll, Monica, Yiram, Isaac, and Isaiah Villanueva; and several cousins.

Obituary Preview: Edmund L. Henault, 85, of Peterborough, passed away peacefully and surrounded by the love of his family at his home in Peterborough on Wednesday, March 30, 2022.
Ed was born on February 19, 1937 to Edmund L. Henault and Helen E. (L’Esperance) Henault of Fitchburg, Massachusetts.  He grew up in Fitchburg and Lunenburg, attending Saint Bernard’s High School and working in his father’s ESSO gas station throughout high school.  At the end of senior year, he, Bud Fortin, and Harry Downes walked uptown and joined the Navy in 1955.
He received a Fleet Appointment to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis and graduated in 1961.  Three days later he married his sweetheart, Muriel A. McGinley.
While serving on the USS Vogelgesang DD862, USS Charles H. Roan DD853, and USS McCaffrey DD860 he engaged in the challenge of antisubmarine warfare. When in port he enjoyed a less strenuous time at the Officers Club.
After starting a family with Muriel and finishing his military service, Ed returned to school to receive an MBA from Babson College while working for Polaroid in manufacturing and human resources. He relocated to Peterborough after he became the plant manager for Millipore in Jaffrey. He went on to serve as the Vice President of Human Resources at Waters Chromatography Division.  Later he transitioned his experience into a successful consulting career—OSI Pharmaceuticals, was one of his favorites.
An avid fisherman, he had diverse adventures such as bone fishing in the Bahamas, pike and lake trout fishing in New Hampshire and Maine, and blue fish and striper fishing in the waters off Chatham.  He was often in the company of his long-time friend, Dick Bickford, his cousin, Leo Bray, and son, Tom.  He enjoyed trips to Northern Canada with Dan Legere and Steve Cole.  In winter, he would brave the cold to ice fish with friends.
During his retirement, he was a dedicated member of Trout Unlimited, the Peterborough Town Budget Committee, and the Open Space Committee.  In his work for the Open Space Committee, he was particularly proud of his part in conserving the land that would later become the Hiroshi Loop Trail.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Muriel. They enjoyed visiting the Florida Keys, taking river cruises in Europe, and exploring places like the Grand Canyon. Annual trips to the beach in Maine and to ski resorts with their family were welcome traditions.

Sylvia Taylor - September 01, 1936 - March 29, 2022

Departed: 03/29/2022 (Peterborough)
Obituary Preview: On March 29, 2022, Sylvia A.M. Taylor passed away at Jaffrey Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after suffering from a debilitating stroke. Sylvia was, in a nutshell, independent. If you looked up independent in the dictionary, Sylvia’s picture would be listed as the definition. She was born in London, England on September 1, 1936, and was raised with 6 brothers (William, Owen, Reg, Ron, Doug, and Dave) and one sister, Ireen (Reen). Sylvia and Reen spent much of their childhood in Wales as evacuees during the war living with their Aunt. Reen and Sylvia were more than sisters; they were the best of friends. When Reen passed away in February of 2020, Sylvia was never really the same.
Sylvia came to America in 1971 and raised 4 children on her own while working at Brookstone and also as a bartender most evenings. Many locals who visited the Straw Hat, Ridan, Monadnock Country Club, or the Salzburg Inn back in the mid-70’s and 1980’s will probably still remember that petite, blond British bartender, who was quick with a joke, a drink, and a smile. However, if you were rude or disrespectful, she would throw you out of her bar, no matter how big or strong you thought you were.
Sylvia was well-loved by the many people she met over the years. The last few years of her life were spent at Payson Village in Rindge. After living alone for so many years, Sylvia relished the comradery and friendships she developed at Payson. Those friendships and bonds perhaps made the last few years of her life the happiest.
More than anything else though, Sylvia loved her grandchildren. She would talk about them for hours to anyone who would listen. A friend from Payson recently mentioned that Sylvia told him she had never experienced true love until she had grandchildren. The two grandchildren who lived close by would be treated to many weekends at Nana’s where she would take them mini-golfing, to the movie theater, shopping, and of course eat lots and lots of treats.
Sylvia is survived by her four children, Jeffrey Taylor of Rindge, Caron Leichtman and her husband Kerry, of Rockport, Maine, Fiona Oberrick and her husband John, of San Diego, California, and Laura Merzi and her husband Michael, of Greenfield, Sylvia’s beloved grandchildren, Connor Oberrick of Pensacola, Florida, Nicholas Merzi and Olivia Merzi of Greenfield. Sylvia also loved to pieces, her nephew David Britton and his wife Helen of Blidworth, Nottingham, England, and their children Sophie and Elliot.

Kathryn was the wife of the distinguished educator Ernest Boyer, who held the top education post in the nation under President Carter.  She recounted their 40 years together in her 2014 memoir Many Mansions.  She was a pioneer in natural childbirth and holistic health, insisting that her own births proceed without the drugs that were typical of that era.  Later, as a midwife, she inspired others with these values.  A devout Christian, blessed with an endless joy of life, she never stopped thinking of ways to help those in need or to support her family in whatever way she could.
Kathryn Garis Tyson was born Oct. 16, 1928 in Creamery, PA to Isaiah and Katie Tyson, a devout Brethren in Christ (Anabaptist) family. Her father died when she was an infant and her grandparents took in the family of six. The stories of growing up on the farm of her Grandma Garis remained some of her fondest memories in her old age.  For high school she boarded at Messiah College in Grantham, PA where she met her beloved husband, Ernest Boyer of Dayton, Ohio.   After graduating from nursing school, she and her husband moved to Florida where he was the pastor of a small church. When he was offered a teaching position at Upland College in California they moved across the country. As her husband rose through the ranks in the academic world, she took on the demanding role of hostess for important gatherings.   They moved to Albany, NY in 1965 when he joined the State University of New York system, eventually becoming its chancellor.
The next move was to Washington when he was appointed Commissioner of Education by President Carter in 1977.  It was here she was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of training to become a midwife.  She delivered many babies in her career, including some of her own grandchildren and others under difficult conditions in Belize where one of her sons and his family lived.   She was president of the American College of Nurse Midwives Foundation and founded a program to educate teenage mothers on parenting and help them stay in school. Later she received an honorary degree for her service from Hood College in Maryland.
She moved to Princeton, NJ in 1981 when her husband was named president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.  After his death in 1995 she was active in the community and her church in Princeton. She organized a women’s Bible fellowship, formed a Chinese women’s group, and managed a marriage-support group for women where her gracious leadership and contagious enthusiasm for life forged long-lasting friendships.   The last years of her life were spent in Peterborough, New Hampshire at RiverMead Lifecare Community.
She is survived by her sister Esther Tyson Boyer of Chico, California, sons Ernest, Jr. (Sondy) of Sunnyvale, California, Craig (Flora) of Rosebud, Texas, Paul (Hilary) of Ithaca, NY, daughter Beverly (Dale Coye) of Wilton, NH, 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.   A memorial service will be held at the former Perkiomen Valley Brethren in Christ Church (46 Trappe Rd. Obituary Preview: Dorothy Donovan Peterson died February 12, 2022, at Rivermead Retirement Community in Peterborough. She was 95 years old.
Dorothy Peterson was born in Hanover, daughter of Francis B. and Mildred T. Donovan on May 6th, 1926. She graduated from Peterborough High School in the class of 1944 and attended Russell Sage and Mount Holyoke Colleges.  She married Walter Peterson, who later served as Governor of New Hampshire, in November of 1949.
Dorothy lived in Peterborough from the time she was three years old until her death. Along with serving as the First Lady of New Hampshire from 1969-1973, she lived a life of service to her family and community. She was active in supporting regional and statewide organizations, including the New Hampshire Lung Association, Monadnock Family Services, New Hampshire Public Radio, and many others. She was the first female president elected to the Monadnock Community Hospital Board of Trustees in 1978. Her involvement with the hospital dates back to when she was a volunteer, along with her mother, during World War II and she went on to serve for many years as a volunteer nurse’s aide.  A garden at the hospital was dedicated in her honor in 2011.
Dorothy also was president of the Peterborough Historical Society (now the Monadnock Center for History and Culture) and served on the board of directors for The Anna Philbrook Children's Foundation. She was active in All Saints Episcopal Church and for years ran the church Serendipity Shop. In 1997, Dorothy received, along with her husband, the Pettee Medal, the UNH Alumni Association's highest award, for their outstanding contributions to the state and UNH, and in 2010, the couple was awarded the UNH Hubbard Family Award for Service to Philanthropy. She continued her philanthropic and volunteer activity into her 90s and served as an honorary chair of the recently completed Peterborough Town Library renovation project.
The Petersons were lifelong education advocates. They founded the Walter and Dorothy Peterson Library Fund which enables new UNH faculty to purchase volumes for the university's library collection and endowed the Walter and Dorothy Peterson Scholarship for students of English education and writing at Plymouth State University. They had a deep involvement over many years with the Community College System of New Hampshire and with Franklin Pierce University where her husband served as President.
Dorothy Peterson leaves two children: Meg Petersen and Andrew Peterson and his wife Kirsten, seven grandchildren:  Jennifer Holland, Anna Cole, Sarah Medearis, Ellie Peterson, Sam González, Marc González, and Max Peterson. She also leaves five great-grandchildren.

Joan Spikol - March 20, 1934 - February 11, 2022

Departed: 02/11/2022 (Peterborough)
Obituary Preview: A bright spark left the world on February 11, 2022. After a life full of love and joy, Joan Hermann Spikol peacefully passed away in Peterborough, NH.
Born on March 20, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY, Joan spent her youth watching the Brooklyn Dodgers play at Ebbetts Field, skipping school to see Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday, and loving every dog in her neighborhood.
After attending Brooklyn College, Joan began her career as a second-grade teacher in the New York City public school system, where she taught for many years. Her classrooms were filled with playfulness, art, and always great books. She showed each student kindness and compassion.
She married the love of her life, David Spikol, in 1957. Together they had many wonderful adventures, including traveling in Europe, running an antique store, and raising their two children, Daniel and Susie. Although they raised their family in Brooklyn, each summer, they spent time in Newfane, Vermont, where their home was always open to many friends and family members.
Throughout her life, Joan loved animals. She brought her children regularly to the Bronx Zoo and Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, where they were lucky enough to see such highlights as snowy owls, peregrine falcons, and American oystercatchers against the New York City skyline. Every fall for many years, she and Dave enjoyed time on top of Putney Mountain in Vermont, scanning the skies for migrating hawks.
For the past eight years, Joan and David lived at The Village at Rivermead in Peterborough, where she made many new friends and enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow. David and her children are forever grateful for the tender and compassionate care Joan received from The Village’s Assisted Living staff.
No words would be complete about Joan without mentioning her love for life, family, her beloved dachshunds, and a dry martini.  She loved a good joke, speaking Italian, and her dear friends. She found great joy in being a part of her grandchildren’s lives, seeing them grow, and finding their own paths in the world. They will miss her sparkling eyes, a warm embrace, and encouraging smile.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, David Spikol, her son Daniel Spikol and his wife Lene Bull of Copenhagen Denmark, her daughter Susie Spikol of Hancock, and her grandchildren, Lily and Liam Denehy and David Faber.

Janet Schaefer - April 07, 1932 - February 10, 2022

Departed: 02/10/2022 (Peterborough)
Obituary Preview: Janet “Jan” (Udall) Schaefer, beloved wife, aunt, and friend passed away on February 10, 2022 in Peterborough, New Hampshire. She was 89 years old.
Forever described as kind, gentle, and gracious, Janet devoted her life to helping others. Her generosity of spirit was legendary amongst all who knew her.
Born to Richard M. and Alma (Underwood) Udall in Gardner, MA, Janet spent summers at Underwood Farm in Jaffrey, NH. Upon graduating from Central High School in Valley Stream, NY where her father was Superintendent, she earned an Arts and Science degree from Colby-Sawyer College, New London, NH in 1952.
Janet went on to become a well-respected executive secretary at the architectural firm, Eggers and Higgins, in New York City. While in their employ, she served as president of the New York Chapter of the Architectural Secretaries Association. It was through her work at the firm on the 1964 World’s Fair Schaefer Center, that she met her future husband, Rudolph J. Schaefer, Jr., president and chairman of the board of F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company. Retiring in 1967, Janet became a devoted wife to Rudy, establishing residence in Mamaroneck, NY for twenty-seven years.
Her many volunteer activities included developing the New Rochelle hospital gift shop and eatery and helping with the design of the Schaefer Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, CT. She was also president of the Embroiderers Guild of America Inc, Westchester County Chapter. Janet maintained her fellowship at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church for several decades. She brought ‘grace and strength’ in her six years as a volunteer for Hospice of Westchester.
Janet became an essential collaborator with her husband, Rudy—an avid sailor, two-time commodore of the Larchmont Yacht Club, and maritime art collector—on the J.E. Buttersworth: 19th Century Marine Painter, published in 1975. (She later continued to research the life and works of this influential British-born American painter and published a revised and updated second edition in 2009.) These books are considered invaluable resources for collectors, marine art owners, and lovers of the sea. Much of her Buttersworth collection was gifted to the Mariner’s Museum of Newport News, VA and Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT.
After Rudy’s death in 1982, Janet decided to return to her New Hampshire roots and lived in Hancock, NH for eighteen years before moving to a cottage at Rivermead. Her membership of the Monadnock Garden Club was highlighted by garden tours of her beautiful home; a source of great joy to herself and family gatherings. Additionally, she was an active member of the Sharon Arts Board of Trustees.
Because of Janet’s extraordinary support of her alma mater’s Arts Center, the Udall Endowed Scholarship, and the Janet U. Schaefer Memorial Fund she was inducted into the Colby-Sawyer Legends Society in 2005. In 2015, her unwavering commitment to the school earned her the highest honor of the Susan Colgate Cleveland Medal for Distinguished Service award.
Throughout her journey, Janet’s thoughtful and pragmatic approach has been lauded by friends and family alike. When asked how she kept her composure and generous spirit, no matter the circumstance, she would shrug and say “I’ve been given so much, I think it is right to share.” Her devotion to her family’s well-being and steadfast commitment to ‘what is the right thing to do’ has inspired many and will continue to guide us all as we reflect on her essence of goodness.
Janet is predeceased by her brother, Dr. Richard P. Udall, formerly of Glens Falls, NY in 2011; and her dearest cousin, Deborah (Underwood) Brown of Peterborough, NH in 2006.
She is survived by her nephew, Jeffrey (Linda) Udall of Northampton, MA/The Villages, FL, Melissa Stockholm (Robin Decker) of Ferrisburgh, VT and Carin (Charlie) Scalva of Durango, CO. Also surviving are her grandnephews and grandnieces, John Tompkins (Rebecca Lorenz) of NY, Erica Udall of CA, Daniel (Keely) Scalva of CO, and Jennifer (Tyson) Runyan of NM. Additionally, her beloved sister-in-law, Lois Udall and daughter-in-law, Jane (Isdale) Schaefer of Stonington, CT and family; her cousins, Cathy (Eric) Meerbergen of NC, and Abigail (Lewis) Wendell of NY and families; and long-time and devoted friend, Patrice (Skye) Albright of Jaffrey, NH.
Janet Schaefer’s family would like to express their gratitude to Rivermead Assisted Living staff and Nancy Folsom of HCS Peterborough for their compassionate care and kindness.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, please make any memorial gifts to: Janet U. Schaefer Memorial Fund at Colby-Sawyer College, New London, NH or the Monadnock Community Hospital, Dept. of Philanthropy, 452 Old Street Road, Peterborough, NH.

Richard "Dick" Bell - October 05, 1931 - February 02, 2022

Departed: 02/02/2022 (Peterborough)
Obituary Preview: Richard "Dick" Boyer Bell, 90, of Hancock, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family on February 2, 2022 after a period of failing health. He was born on October 5, 1931 in Worcester, Massachusetts, the second of seven children of Ellis Clifton and Margaret Pearl (Brazil) Bell. He grew up in Oxford, Massachusetts, vividly remembering the Hurricane of '38 that destroyed the family farm and forever changed their lives. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1949. After two years at UMass, Amherst, Dick answered the call to duty during the Korean Conflict and enlisted in the US Air Force, completing four years of active duty with postings stateside, France, and Germany and four years in the reserves. His technical training in the military led him to IBM, in the days of tabulators and punch cards, from which he retired in 1991 as a systems engineer after a career of 35 years. He always liked to be behind the wheel, and that served him well in his retirement career for the 10 years he drove school bus for STA in the ConVal district.
Dick had a gift for construction and engineering, and he applied those talents throughout his life, whether remodeling his homes or serving on committees with the town of Hancock or the Property Committee of the First Congregational Church, UCC. He also held an amateur radio license, getting his start back in the days of CB radio. Dick was a good man with a big heart who always wanted the best for his family.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, older brother Clif, infant sister Margaret, brother-in-law Robert Bellville, and former wife Ann Bell Ricci. He is survived by his wife of 35 years Roberta Bell; children Richard B. Bell (Jodi McNamara), Russell M. Bell (Laura), Karen Bell Kinnaly (Edward); grandsons Russell Carl Doucet and Miles Truman Doucet; siblings Barbara Bellville, Stuart Bell (Terry Grogan), Norman Bell (Judith), George Bell (Jackie); several nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law Richard Ricci.
Having been raised on a farm, Dick knew the value of hard work and enjoyed the bounty of home-grown, put-by, and farm-raised produce and protein. To honor his memory, please consider planting a fruit tree, growing a garden, or supporting your local farmers.
Cremation has taken place. An informal celebration of Dick's life will be announced at a later date. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Norway Plain Cemetery in Hancock. Sailing Long Island Sound and coastal Massachusetts and hiking New Hampshire's 4,000 footers were treasured pastimes that will be recognized in warmer weather.
The family offers heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staffs of both Monadnock Community Hospital and Pheasant Wood Center. Your loving care and compassion were much appreciated.

Guy Jackson - November 10, 1949 - February 02, 2022

Departed: 02/02/2022 (Peterborough)
Obituary Preview: Guy Letchford Jackson of Dublin, NH passed away on February 2, 2022, at age 72. His last four days, comfortably at home, were surrounded by extended family and close friends celebrating his life. He said that he thought he might be the luckiest guy in the world.
Guy was born to Sallie Letchford Jackson and Gardner Jackson Jr. on November 10, 1949, in Boston, MA.  He spent his younger years growing up in Lincoln, MA, and splitting his summer months between Osterville and Cotuit, MA.  The oldest of four brothers, Guy set a tone of kindness and generosity that defined the closeness and love that his extended family has continued to share for generations. The brothers spent endless days together sailing and racing skiffs in Cotuit, a sport at which they all excelled, and devising pick-up games of soccer, pond hockey, and other rambunctious games siblings will play.
Guy left Lincoln in 1962 to attend the Dublin School in Dublin, NH, four years that were among his favorites. He treasured soccer, sailing, ‘work gang’, and skiing for the school, as well as his life-long relationships with friends, faculty, and the administration. He chose to hike Mt. Monadnock every Sunday morning in lieu of attending church. Graduating from high school did not stop him from returning to Dublin and the mountain. For much of the rest of his life he would bring family and friends back to the Pumpelly Trail (yes, the longest trail) to climb the mountain and moved back to Dublin in 2010, to a home with a lovely view of the top.
In 1968, Guy joined the Navy as a Corpsman. He first worked at Chelsea Naval Hospital and in November 1969, he boarded the USS Mauna Loa, and with only one other senior corpsman cared for the complement of 250 men. He spent the next three years sailing between the shores of NJ to ports in the Mediterranean.  He always spoke of these four years as formative, not only in his drive to later go into medicine but also in his growth and identity.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1973, he began another highlighted four years at Colorado College (CC).  It took only a few days to meet the woman to whom he would be married for 43 years, Nancy Nettleton, a classmate in his freshman seminar course. In keeping with his personality, Guy made so many lifelong friendships at CC while playing for the Men’s Soccer Team, hiking in the San Juan Mountains, playing pick-up soccer and ice hockey, and befriending faculty members, some only a few years older than him. College revealed his unprecedented work ethic; he graduated with a degree in biology.
On August 12, 1978, Guy Jackson and Nancy Nettleton were married in Guilford, CT and lived in Bolton, MA for the next 28 years. In 1981 they welcomed their first child, Lydia Burr Jackson, followed by a son, Patrick Fiske Jackson in 1983. Guy loved his children and was a strong proponent of getting the kids outside and putting them to work shoveling snow, stacking wood, picking rocks out of the garden and tossing them into the bucket of his beloved Kubota tractor, breaking trails through the woods on cross country skis, playing pond hockey and skating the perimeter of ponds large and small, sailing around Dead Neck Island, biking great distances, or climbing mountains. He taught his children how to succeed by holding the values of work, love of nature, and trustworthiness.
In 1987, Guy attended Duke University’s Physician Assistant Program and returned to work at Mass General Hospital in Boston. He spent the remainder of his 40-year career as a PA in Cardiology and Electrophysiology labs and offices at MGH, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Beth Israel Hospital. He worked as a trusted colleague, teacher and mentor. He respected and cherished his coworkers and other staff who were part of his daily routines, but above all, he loved his patients. He loved getting to know them as people, hear their life stories, and celebrate their lives with them.
Although he and Nancy loved to travel, Guy’s favorite hobbies kept him close to home. He liked nothing more than a day in his yard, planting dahlias, ambling between his barn and his gardens, driving his tractors around, building stone walls, feeding the goats and enjoying these unconventional pets, planting hundreds of bulbs, or organizing his tools in his barn. Guy and Nancy’s biggest endeavor on their homestead in Dublin was replacing their historic barn with a new post and beam one. He chose to paint it an unconventional light yellow and it now sits sparkling in the sunlight on their property. It brought him so much joy in the few years of his retirement.
Within the last decade of his life, he was overjoyed to welcome his four grandchildren to the world: Edith Isabel McGown (2013) and Heidi Palmer McGown (2017) to Lydia Jackson and Paul McGown, and Macy Rae Jackson (2016) and Gordon Maddock Jackson (2018) to Patrick and Christie Farson Jackson. His brightest days in the past few years have been days spent giving tractor rides, reading to them, and providing them a home to come to and enjoy the wonders of animals, gardens, and space to roam and play in.

Jill Lawler - April 02, 1946 - February 01, 2022

Departed: 02/01/2022 (Peterborough)
Obituary Preview: Jill Lawler passed away on February 1st at Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough surrounded by her loving family. It’s impossible to put into words the meaning of a life, especially a life like Jill’s that was spent reading, writing, and loving words. For forty years, Jill shared the words of her favorite authors with several generations of students at ConVal High School, as well as the final graduating class of Peterborough High School, and helped those same students find and shape their own words and stories. Jill’s love of literature started when she was a student and English major at Bates College, the same place where she met another great love in her life, her husband of 53 years, Jerry.  In 1968, Jill and Jerry moved to NH where they would start a family, having two daughters, Jess and Liz.
Jill, the eldest of four, was born on April 2,1946 to Elizabeth Anna Reinholdz and Harry Southcombe Howroyd in Hartford, CT. Jill and brothers Jay, Steven and Josh grew up in nearby Manchester, CT where much of their family still lives today.
Jill’s reach stretched far into the community she lived in for over 50 years. She was involved in organizations that served that community like The Dublin Women’s Club Beach, NHDI and the Dublin Public Library. You could also find her on any number of sidelines, bleachers, pool decks and theater seats cheering on and supporting her daughters in all of their most loved activities. That devotion to her children and the joy she took in supporting those she loved grew with the addition of her grandchildren Nora, Gavin, Oliver and Wren. Jill was so many things to so many different people, but to all, whether a former student or not, Jill was a teacher. She loved literature, writing, her family and teaching.  Jill never stopped growing and learning and later in her life she discovered and fell in love with the poetry of Mary Oliver. In one of her favorite poems, Oliver reminds us that “To live in this world you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.” For those left behind, this letting go will not be easy but we take comfort in knowing that we’ll continue to hold Jill close.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform it will be published in. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Where are obituaries typically published?
