Obituary Preview: Gary Rhena Johnson was born in Detroit, MI September 3rd, 1958. The son of Uggie Johnson and Lee Gary, Gary was the youngest of four children. He attended Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Northwestern High School in 1976. He then attended Delta Community College on a sports scholarship where he played basketball.
Gary worked for the Wayne County Clerk’s office and Wayne County Treasurer’s Office for almost 20 years, retiring in 2009. Gary enjoyed his time of retirement to the fullest.
Gary met the love of his life, Rosalinda, on June 12th, 1986. The two were married on August 18th, 1987. They remained happily married for 34 years.
Gary was a follower of the Nation of Islam. He loved cars and was a great chef. A passionate Detroit sports fan, he also loved Nascar and the Dallas Cowboys. Known for his hilarious storytelling, Gary enjoyed hosting people at his home and sharing fun experiences with the people he loved.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother Uggie Johnson and his father Lee Gary, brother George, brother Reginald “Cary” and his mother and father-in-law, Beatrice and Juan Gonzales.
Survived by his wife Rose and sister Lois, Gary leaves to cherish his memory his three children; Gary (Trinita) Johnson, Jr., Kyra Johnson and Khadijah Johnson; four grandchildren Joraya, Kaleb, Ganiya and Gianna Johnson, nephew and best friend Reginald “Speedy” Calvin, and a Khadijah Johnson.
