"On November 24, 2023, our beloved blended family matriarch Jenni (aka Jeannie) was called to be with her Lord and savior, as well with her precious family and friends in heaven. At 95 and in compromised health, she still found the strength and effort to keep in touch with those she loved. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral or memorial services, and any charitable donations in their memory.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. However, it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, burial arrangements, and any charitable donations in their memory.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life story. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

You can usually submit an obituary through the publication's website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be sure to follow their guidelines and deadlines for submission.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication and the length of the notice. Some newspapers and online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge a fee based on the number of words or lines.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to have control over how they are remembered. This can be a unique opportunity for self-reflection and storytelling.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of a person's passing, while an obituary provides more detailed information about their life and legacy.

How soon after a person's passing should an obituary be published?

The timing of publishing an obituary varies depending on cultural and personal preferences. In general, it's best to publish the obituary within a few days of the person's passing to ensure that friends and family are informed in a timely manner.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a celebration of the person's life, so feel free to include stories, quotes, or humorous moments that capture their personality and spirit.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member who knew the deceased well. You can also hire a professional writer or seek guidance from a funeral home or bereavement counselor.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes, many online platforms allow you to publish an obituary without printing it in a physical newspaper. This can be a cost-effective option and allows for wider reach and sharing capabilities.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration of online availability varies depending on the platform. Some websites may keep the obituary online indefinitely, while others may remove it after a certain period of time.

Can I make corrections or updates to an already-published obituary?

In most cases, yes. Contact the publication or online platform where the obituary was published to request corrections or updates. Be prepared to provide documentation supporting the changes.

What if I want to keep the funeral or memorial service private?

You can still publish an obituary without including details about the funeral or memorial service. Simply omit this information or indicate that services will be private.

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's legacy.

How do I handle sensitive or complicated family dynamics when writing an obituary?

This can be a challenging situation. Consider seeking guidance from a trusted friend, family member, or bereavement counselor to help navigate these complexities with sensitivity and respect.

What if I need help finding information for an obituary?

You can gather information from various sources such as photo albums, scrapbooks, letters, diaries, and conversations with family members and friends. You can also consult with local historians or genealogists for assistance.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share news of a loved one's passing and reach a wider audience.

How do I ensure that an online obituary remains respectful and safe from unwanted comments?

Moderate comments carefully and consider setting up restrictions on who can leave comments. You can also report any inappropriate behavior to the platform administrators.

What if I want to create a memorial website or online tribute instead of publishing an obituary?

This is a wonderful idea! Online memorials can provide a lasting tribute to your loved one and allow friends and family to share memories and condolences in one place.
