He was born June 23, 1955 in L'Anse, son of Arne and Margaret (Seelye) Maki. Dan graduated from Great Lakes Adventist Academy in Cedar Lake, MI. He married Denise LaFernier on September 17, 1977 in Keweenaw Bay, MI. He worked as a truck driver, welder, and a logger. Dan enjoyed motor cycles, dirt bikes, four wheelers, kayaking, music, flying model airplanes, being in nature, scuba diving, metal detecting, and when he was younger he lifted weights and was a body builder. Surviving are his wife Denise Maki of L'Anse; children, Becky (Dr. John) Simmons of Corning, NY, Jessica (Eric) Cadeau of L'Anse, Emily Maki of L'Anse; grandchildren, Zakkary Tussing, Lexus Tussing, Nathaniel Cadeau, Alexander Cadeau, and Genevieve Cadeau; brother-in-law Richard LaFernier of Keweenaw Bay, MI. Preceding him in death are his parents, Arne and Margaret Maki; sisters June Mervar, Della Jestila, and Margaret "Mugsy" Maki Tikkanen; and brother Arne "Mutty" Maki. James Edward Bergerson - September 13, 1941 - November 04, 2023

Obituary Preview: James E. Bergerson, age 82 of L'Anse, MI passed on to join his eternal family on Saturday, November 4, 2023 while at his home surrounded by love, peace and family. Jim was born on September 13, 1941 in L'Anse, MI. He grew up in Baraga, MI with his mother, Helen Elizabeth Bergerson and father, Cyril Wallace Bergerson and his late sister, Karen (who married Ulie Mayo), his late brother William "Bill" Bergerson (who married Mary "Cubby") and his surviving sister Sall (who married Allen "Uno" Patovisti). Jim graduated from Baraga High School in 1959. He joined the National Guard in 1959-1962 where he trained to be a wheeled vehicle mechanic. In 1963 he married Bonnie Toyras (Hill) and together they had four children: James Mark Bergerson (Vicki), Kevin Bergerson, Lisa DeCaire, and Tammy Magaraggia (Pete) and 11 grandchildren: James Bergerson, Jeremy Bergerson, Brier Bergerson, Jessica Bergerson, Dylan DeCaire, Karisa DeCaire, Joel Decaire, Jonathon Magaraggia, Emily Osinaga Magaraggia, Joseph Magaraggia, and Dean Magaraggia and 12 great grandchildren. He moved to Gaylord, MI while working for Pettibone where he earned an award for Product of the Year from State of Michigan for being one of the main contributors on the Pettibone Carry-Lift. He and his family moved to Mississippi where he started the business Superior Brush, then they moved back to Aura, MI where he built their family home on Huron Bay. Jim worked for YACC (Young Adult Conservation Corp) and Tribal Construction teaching young adults new skills. He bought a logging truck and started Bergerson Logging. Finally, Jim worked for the State of Michigan as a correction officer at the Baraga Maximum Correctional facility where he eventually retired. In 1993 he married the late Carole Bergerson and added three step-children to his family: Steve Olsen(Heather), Kristen Olsen, and Jeff Olsen (Kristen) and eventually seven step grandchildren: Tyler Thoresen, Elyse Thoresen, Holden Hamblin, Christian Olsen, Luke Olsen, Allison Olsen and Carter Olsen. During his retirement, Jim loved to fish with his best friend and wife, Carole, and whichever grandchild would "Want to go fishing with grandpa". He fished Lake Superior and made many trips to Lake Michigan with his friends. He also shared his woodworking skills with his grandchildren by turning a block of wood into a detailed, working toy for them. He always made his granddaughter's feel special simply by asking "How's my Sweetie?" Jim loved to hunt and shared that with his grandson's as well. He also loved to go 4 wheeling, rabbit hunting with the guys, and making maple syrup. Jim was a member of the Baraga County Sno Drifters Club where he spent countless hours grooming the trails, Baraga County Search and Rescue, and Baraga County Car Club where he shared the love of old time cars with his father. Jim also spent countless hours researching genealogy and was proud of making the family tree that dates back to 1437. If anyone had a question, they would know that "Dad or Jim will know how to do it" and that turned into "Grandpa, how do you....". Despite battling many illnesses throughout the years, his positive attitude, his courage, and his strength was and will continue to be admired. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 10th at 12:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home with Pastor Peter Suomela officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Baraga Cemetery with Baraga County Area Veterans conducting military rites at 1 p.m.. Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family. Bernice worked at Commercial National Bank in L'Anse for four years, Marquette General Hospital in accounting department for two years, Dr. Lambert in Marquette for 2 years, Haven & Garlock CPAs for 3 years, Andrew M. Skaug CPA for eight years, Curtis, Bailey, & Espiota CPAs for eight years, then William G. Martin Realtor until retiring in 1986. Bernice was a member of United Lutheran Church in L'Anse. She is survived by her brother Marvin Tollefson of Crystal Falls, MI; sisters, Leona Schultz of Freedom, WI, Phyllis Olson of Marquette, MI, Rena (Gary) Boucher of Dunedin, FL; sister-in-laws Betty Tollefson of L'Anse; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents, husband Leland Nord; Leo and Tyyne Tollefson; sister Edna Nord, brothers, Raymond and Leslie Tollefson.. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 11th at 11 a.m. at United Lutheran Church in L'Anse with Pastor Julie Belew officiating. She was born May 18, 1927 in Flint, MI daughter to Carl and Della (Dunham) Anderson. Patricia graduated in 1945 from Trout Creek High School. She married Harold Champine in 1947 in Baraga County and they resided in Sidnaw, MI. Patricia was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, member of the Sidnaw Episcopal Church, served on the Sidnaw Township Board and was employed by the L'anse School District as a bus driver. Over the years she was a waitress, bartender, cook at Camp Nesbit, custodian for a Wisconsin Hospital and a caretaker for her loved ones. Her hobbies were baking, yard work, working on her word searches and would challenge her family members with card games. Surviving are her daughter Sally (Stanley) Niemi of Skandia; grandchildren, Hana (Chris) Blissett of St. Louis Park, MN, Haran Niemi of Littleton, Co, Emily (Aaron) Bradley of Marquette; great grandchildren Miles, Matthias and Della Blissett, Kyla Niemi, Aiden and Allie Bradley, her sister Katherine Price of Las Vegas, Nevada, her sister-in-law Janice Anderson of Dunedin, Florida and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents Carl and Della Anderson, husband Harold; brothers Robert (Ethel), Bill (Barbara) and Doug, sisters Betty Tschury (Lee), Rosemary Yoemans (Larry); brother-in-law Ray Price;  and grandchild Bethany Niemi. Obituary Preview: Curtis Gale Royal, age 80 of Skanee, MI passed away on Wednesday, October 18th, 2023 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan. He was born August 19, 1943 in New Madrid County, Missouri, son of Kern and Hazel (Stewart) Royal. Curt grew up traveling around Missouri and Illinois with his family doing labor work with his father. He met his wife Lorraine Bonini in Illinois and they married in June 1972. Curt was a cabinet maker for about 20 years, prior to purchasing The Finn's Bar in Skanee in 1989. He owned and operated the bar until 2011 when he retired. Curt enjoyed fishing, hunting, fourwheeling, gardening, yard work, being outdoors, fllipping cars, and helping his son, Rusty with his landscaping business. He also enjoyed going to camp and spending time with his friends. He was an honorary member of the Arvon Outlaws and the Skanee Bear Hunters. Surviving are his son Russell "Rusty" (Sheila) Royal of Baraga; ex-wife Lorraine Bonini of Hancock; grandchildren, DySean, Dhanya, and Breyelle all of Baraga; sister Judy Wingfield of Illinois; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He married Trudy House on November 24, 1984 in Rocky Mount. Philip was a self employed paint contractor, retiring in 2020. In 2020, he and his wife moved to L'Anse, MI to be closer to family. Surviving are his wife Trudy Medlin of L'Anse; children, Terrell Medlin and Nikki (Terry) Johnson both of Rocky Mount, McDonough Lee (Dwayne) Whitley and Skylar (Benjamin) Bakewell both of L'Anse; brother Willard (Teresa) Medlin of Rocky Mount; nine grandchildren, Jameson, Leanne, Jessica, Caleb, and Brittin Boone, Alex Johnson, Thea, Addalynn, and Oliver Bakewell; five great grandchildren, Karli, Caison, Kaislee, Colston, and Chloe Bissette. Larry Dean Seratti - April 28, 1947 - October 06, 2023

Obituary Preview: Larry Dean Seratti, age 76, local businessman, passed away quietly October 6, 2023, at his home in Norway, MI. He was born April 28, 1947, in Baraga, MI son of Joseph "Jocko" and Eileen (Ross) Seratti. Larry graduated from Baraga High School in 1965 and attended Suomi College in Hancock. He was a member of the Baraga National Guard. He was activated during the Detroit riots. He married Lorraine Nevala on August 12, 1967, at St. Ann Church in Baraga, MI. Larry operated Malvasio Vending of Marquette and later acquired JB Vending of Iron Mountain which has been in operation for 38 years. Prior to his retirement he thoroughly enjoyed many years of service to the employees of Grede Foundry. During his operation of Malvasio Vending in Marquette, Larry was elected President of the Golden Wildcat Club. His efforts to promote athletics at NMU resulted in fundraising of nearly $400,000 each year. He was especially proud of his success in securing funding for women's sports at NMU. As a businessman, Larry felt the need to improve education to maintain a well-trained workforce. With bi-partisan support in the Legislature, he created the Public Enrichment Foundation. With millions of dollars in donated books and other educational materials, the Foundation provided millions of dollars in free books to needy children and senior citizens throughout the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Michigan. Larry served as the foundation's executive director for 25 years. Larry was an avid hunter and fisherman and spent many years as a member of the Rock 40 hunting lodge in Kenton, Michigan. Larry enjoyed bringing his grandchildren and family into the beautiful natural environment of the Upper Peninsula. He leaves behind his wife, Lorraine, of 56 years; three children, Joseph Carlos Seratti of Iron Mountain, Gino Anthony (Chelsey) Seratti of Norway, Julie Maria (Gary) Tate of Chester Springs, PA; sisters, Kathy Kissel of L'Anse, MI, Phyllis LaBranche of Escanaba, MI; and sister-in-law Shirley Seratti of Waterford, MI. Larry and Lorraine have also been blessed with four granddaughters, five grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Eileen; an infant daughter, Angela Marie; brothers, Jim Seratti of Waterford, MI and Jerry (Alyce Mae) Seratti of L'Anse. MI. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, October 20th at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Iron Mountain, with Fr. Mark McQuesten officiating. Leo Sam Durant - March 16, 1939 - September 27, 2023

Obituary Preview: Leo Sam Durant Jr (Manny) ManidoMukwa (Spirit Bear), age 84 passed away September 27 at the home of his daughter, Amanda, in Milwaukee, WI after a courageous battle with cancer. Leo was born in Baraga Mi on March 16, 1939 to Leo Sam Durant Sr and Bertha Nedeau. He attended Baraga Area Schools later to receive a GED certificate. He also attended Bay Mills Community College Ojibwe Language Immersion Program earning certificate. He was a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and served for many years on the KBIC Cultural Committee. Manny worked in the logging industry. At one time he had his own company known as M & M Logging. He worked in this business in Michigan and Washington state. When he retired from logging he worked for KBIC Elder Nutrition as homebound meal deliverer. He worked also for MI DHHS as a medical transporter. He worked for KBIC Housing doing lawn maintenance also owning lawn mowing service. Leo was an honored elder at the July 2019 KBIC Maawanjiiding Powwow. He loved to sing and play guitar. He played along with Bob Kilpela at the Senior Complex for singalongs. One highlight was accompanying Jessica Dakota, violinist, at the Calumet Theater. Leo is survived by his children, Amanda Durant of Milwaukee WI, Amadea Durant of Lyle, WA, Mitchell Durant of L'Anse MI Robert Santiago AZ. Also surviving a sister, Catherine Sandquist of Baraga. He had many grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces an nephews. He truly loved his family. Preceding him in death: his parents, children: Leona, Aaron, Leo Sam III, Steven Durant and Kimberly Soman. Brothers: Dominic and Melvin Durant, Sisters: Martha Roy, Julia Cardinal, Leona Bolo, and Viola Banuchie. Traditional Service and fire will be at the Ojibwa Senior Center, Baraga with visitation: Saturday, September 30, at 7 pm followed by feast. Debra Lynn Heikkila - March 21, 1962 - September 19, 2023

Obituary Preview: Debra (Debbie) Lynn Heikkila, age 61, of Baraga, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at her home. She was born March 21, 1962, in Annapolis, Maryland, the daughter of Darwin and Donna (Paul) Heikkila. Debbie grew up in Baraga and lived in Orlando, Florida, for many years, where she worked for the U.S. Postal Service and in the food industry. In 2021, she moved back to Baraga to be close to family again. Debbie's time raising her son Michael in Florida was one of her proudest accomplishments. She was a second mom to his friends, who offered her support when they had no one else to turn to. She took them to their first skate parks, wouldn't hesitate to answer their calls when they needed a ride home, and ensured they had a childhood full of adventure and great memories. She was selfless, and anything that was important to Michael was important to her. In recent years, Debbie enjoyed quiet time in her apartment overlooking Lake Superior with her cat. Her son, a professional photographer, inspired Debbie to take up a hobby in photography. She took many beautiful photos of the Lake year-round and observed the beautiful sunrises, sunsets, and wildlife. She enjoyed caring for her garden, growing tomatoes and herbs outside her front door. She also enjoyed puzzles, crafting, and spending time with family and friends. Debbie is survived by her son Michael Heikkila and his longtime partner Jamie Paakkonen of Brooklyn, New York; sister Diane Velmer and her boyfriend Bill Raymond of L'Anse; nephew Derrick Velmer; and many cousins. Preceding her in death are her parents, Darwin and Donna (Moe), and a brother, Donald Heikkila. He married the former Sheri Rinkinen on August 5, 2016 in L'Anse. Robert worked at Commercial National Bank as a custodian, and then worked at Certainteed for 34 years, retiring this past June. He was an avid Packer fan. Surviving are his wife Sheri Vizina of L'Anse; parents, Ray and Ethyl Vizina of Baraga; brother Gary (Toni) Vizina of L'Anse; step daughter Whitney Lyberg (Trevor) Wood; and granddaughter Layla Wood. He enjoyed playing guitars and fishing. He was born June 17, 1937 in Elo, MI son of Leonard and Sophie (Autio) Maki. He attended the John A. Doelle School and graduated in 1955. He was in the U. S. Army stationed in Germany until discharged in 1962. Gerald attended Soumi College and Northern Michigan University. He taught school in Owasso, MI until his retirement. Gerald is survived by one brother Edwin Maki of Elo, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Beside his parents he is also preceded in death by two sisters Eleanor Dacko and Ethel Haka; two brothers, Leonard and Clarence Maki. She was born October 27, 1946 in Houghton, MI daughter to Vivan and Joyce (Kunick) Witz. Darlene graduated from L'Anse High School in 1964. She married the love of her life, Leslie Elmblad, on September 27, 1969 in Skanee. They owned and operated Elm's Country Market in Skanee for 5 years. She then went on to work at the L'Anse sentinel. After that she decided to start up her own independent interior home design business. During this time she would wallpaper, paint, and restore furniture. Making homes look beautiful was a passion of hers. Dar and Les opened an antique store, Old Mill Stream, in Michigamme in the late 90's which ran for about 5 years. After the passing of her mother, Joyce, the two took over operations at Witz Marina for the next 16 years. She tried everything life had to offer, you could write a book about all of her adventures. She worked sun up to sun down, never sitting in one place for too long. Aside from working, taking care of her family and home was her top priority. She took pride in her clean home and always had dinner ready for her husband and children. In her freetime she enjoyed picking berries, creating beautiful gardens, dancing, collecting rocks, digging for bottles and other treasures, spending time in the woods and making unique artwork with her findings. Traveling was another great passion of hers. She traveled all over the U.S. and to various other countries. Arizona was a very special place. She was an outstanding grandmother to her grandchildren. Prior to her moving to Bayside Village in the Summer of 2021, her loving husband Les, took great care of her as she declined due to Alzheimer's disease. He would take her for rides daily along with their beloved dog Kitty while she enjoyed a couple busch lights. Her faith in God remained strong until the end, she often spoke about going home to see her parents. We take great comfort in knowing she is home now. Darlene was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee and the Arvon Township Women's auxiliary. Obituary Preview: Carrie Lou Thomas went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 29th, 2023. She was born on April 13, 1942 to Harold and Lucille (Westerman) Juul in Waukegan, Illinois. She and her beloved husband, Larry R. Thomas (deceased 2008) moved to L'Anse, MI in 1975, when they bought the local Ford dealership. She and Larry had a great love affair. They enjoyed their life in L'Anse and the perfect location on Lake Superior. She loved "her lake" as she liked to call it; swimming, riding her wave runner or going out on their boat, working in her garden and yard, and enjoying her beautiful surroundings. She loved to travel with her husband, children, mother and sisters - to some amazing places around the world. She was always up for an adventure. Carrie Lou was a pillar in the Methodist Church in L'Anse, MI, where she served as church organist, lay speaker, United Methodist Women's President and sat on various committees. She was a delegate to the Detroit Conference and other district wide assignments. She loved supporting the church and church family she loved so much. She was Dean of Senior High Camp for 26 years at Michigamme Methodist Camp, loving, caring, sharing, teaching, impacting hundreds of young lives over those years and imparting much wisdom and guidance. She served on the L'Anse School Board and was a driving force for the most recent renovations to the present school facility. She loved supporting her community. We call her Mom, Nanny, Grandma, Sister, Aunt, Friend, Dean, Counselor, Lay Speaker, Organist, Encourager, Prayer Warrior. God calls her Daughter and now she is home with Him. Kenneth Robert Janson - August 19, 1951 - June 24, 2023

Obituary Preview: Kenneth Robert Janson, 71, of Pelkie, Michigan passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on Saturday, June 24th after a courageous battle with cancer. Ken was born on August 19th, 1951 in Menominee, Michigan to Howard and Luella (Sorenson) Janson. He graduated salutatorian from Menominee High School in 1969.
He attended Michigan Technological University in Houghton, earning his bachelors in business administration in 1973. At Michigan Tech, he met his wife, Lael (Stern) and they married on June 19, 1976. At the University of Wisconsin in Madison, he earned his masters in business administration in 1975 and a doctorate in business administration in 1979.
As a gifted teacher and sharer of knowledge, his professional life included serving as a Professor of Accounting at Michigan State University (1979-1982), Michigan Technological University (1982-1988) and Northern Michigan University (2001-2015) where he retired Professor Emeritus. He earned excellence in teaching awards at each university and influenced the lives of hundreds of students through his eloquent writing and storytelling. He worked for D&N Bank and D&N Financial Corporation from 1988 until the company's merger in 1999 as the Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Treasurer.
He was an active member of Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie, serving on the church council and as treasurer for many years. His faith in Jesus was the foundation to his life.
His love of the Upper Peninsula and the outdoors was prevalent throughout his life. He was an enthusiastic downhill skier and served on ski patrol while he was an undergrad at Michigan Tech. He was an avid fisherman and in 2020 he finally caught 'the big one' and earned a Master Angler Patch. In retirement he was an active member of the Ottawa Sportsman Club and served as Club President from 2020-2022.
Ken was also a farmer, establishing Janson Farms with his family in 1979. The farm's permanent home was founded in Pelkie in 1984. He greatly enjoyed making hay, experimenting with new farming techniques, and caring for the family's herd of Simmental cattle. He loved to garden and often grew excess bounty that he enjoyed sharing with friends and neighbors.
Kenneth is survived by his wife Lael, brother David Janson of Plymouth, MI, daughters Alison (Michael) O'Halloran of Dallas, Texas and Kristen (Trent) Batchelor of Fountain Hills, Arizona, and grandchildren Thomas Batchelor (12), Henry O'Halloran (10), Lydia Batchelor (9), Markus Batchelor (7), Gavin O'Halloran (7), and Alexander Batchelor (2). He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Amy Janson, parents Howard and Luella Janson, and in-laws Harold and Grace Stern.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 29th from 11:00 am at Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie. Funeral services will be held at 12 pm at the church with Pastor Dave Hoskins officiating. Burial will be in the Pelkie Cemetery. Jacobson Funeral Services of L'Anse is assisting the family.

Leo was a former member of Christ Lutheran Church in Sheboygan, and later attended Aura Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher. He could often be found "tinkering" on cars, and pretty much anything with an engine. He enjoyed hunting, especially the annual deer camp, and riding his 4-wheeler . Leo was very proud of his Finnish heritage. Surviving are his brother Ed (Deb) Maki, Plymouth WI; sister Annette (Scott) Adamavich, Mequon, WI; nephew and great-nephew, Chuck and Burl Weissgerber, Sheboygan, WI; niece Megan Maki, Milwaukee, WI; and dear friends Craig and Kate Beer, L'Anse, MI. Obituary Preview: Albert Guy Goodreau, age 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 12, 2023 at his home after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He was born on March 29, 1936 in L'Anse, MI, the son of Homer and Grace (Gallano) Goodreau. He graduated from L'Anse High School in 1954 and served in the U.S. Navy. In 1960 he married Pauline Shulstad at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga, and they have been married for 63 years. Albert worked at Celotex Corporation in L'anse before moving to Westland, MI in 1964. There he worked at Evan's Products working his way to General Superintendent. They returned to the U.P. in 1972 where he began his career at Copper Range in White Pine, where he worked as the Safety Engineer/General Foreman until the mine's closure. His final endeavor was Shulstad's Leisure Living where he was chief cook, lawn care and master snow plower. Beth, a resident at Shulstad's, held a very special place in his heart until the day she passed. Beth learned so many things from him! Albert was a devout Catholic with the Rosary and the Devine Mercy Chaplet being extremely important to him. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church serving as a Eucharistic minister, reader, usher and member of the choir. His beautiful voice is something that will be missed by all! He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight while living in White Pine, Ontonagon and Baraga. The Goodreau yard was the neighborhood meeting grounds for many games of football, baseball and basketball, or kick-the-can. The kids fondly nicknamed him "Gray Fox", He would always come out to join in a game of basketball with the kids, if not the kids would ask "is Gray Fox coming out to play?" His family was the most important thing to him and he was always there to support his children and grandchildren in their sporting events. He would lend a shoulder to cry on, words of encouragement or scolding when necessary, or a much needed hug. He loved rocking the babies to sleep with a gentle song or hum. He so loved his grandchildren! He was the epitome of what a father and grandfather should be. Always loving, always supporting, and always caring. He is survived by his wife, Pauline, children, Peter (Cyndi) of Baraga, Michelle Edge of South Carolina, Dale (Michelle) of L'Anse, Sherri of Baraga, Tom (Lauri) of L'Anse, and Sheila (Dean) Osterman of Baraga; grandchildren, Amber (Bobby), Tyler (Alex), Jordan, Carsyn, Jaden, Reide, Cage, Amanda (Peter), Serena (Tyler), Daryl, Ashton, Derek, Jacob, Christopher (Anna), Jonah, Zachary, Cailyn, PJ, Justin, 10 great grandchildren, and his brother Carl (Joan) of Dearborn Heights, MI, sister-in-law Eva Goodreau of Greenland; numerous nieces and nephews. He retired from the mine in 2007. On November 6, 2012 Ray married Tawnya LaRoe at Trinity Lutheran Church in Covngton. Ray was good at any sport he participated in. He loved golf, baseball, fishing, bowling, hunting, and pitching horseshoes. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the VFW Post 8945 in Covington. She was surrounded by her family this past week and they made sure she knew how loved she was. Carole was born on July 28th, 1945 to the late Eino and Frances (Kellis) Hietikko in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. She graduated from Sault High School in 1963 and then moved to Clawson, MI with her family. While living in lower Michigan she met and married her first husband, James Olsen and they moved to L'Anse in 1970. Before she was the most amazing mother, she was a phone operator at Bell Telephone. In 1993, she married James Bergerson who was the love of her life and a wonderful and devoted partner. They would have been married 30 years this summer. Their relationship was so giving to each other while they both went through many health crises. They were always there for each other and just enjoyed quietly living a life of dedication to each other and their family. They both loved to fish on Lake Superior, play cards and host family for meals, and always seemed to have a grandchild over to visit. Carole was the type of mother who devoted her entire life to her family. She had the most amazing ability to care for and nurture her children and grandchildren. Anyone who knew her would rave about the awesome meals and desserts she was known to make. You never left her house hungry. She never missed an event for her children and was always so involved and present with her grandchildren. Any time someone would call her, her first words were bragging about her grandkids. And they also loved her fiercely.
