Norma Estella Nichols - September 29, 1931 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Maplewood)
Obituary Preview: Norma Estella Nichols (nee Sewall) passed away peacefully of old age in the morning of Monday, April 15th under hospice care at Care One Assisted Living in Livingston.
Norma was born on September 29, 1931 to John Noble Sewall and Estella Marshall Sewall in Montclair, New Jersey where she was raised and attended public schools along with her older brother John. At Montclair High School, she met the athletic and charming Robert (Nick) Nichols. Upon graduation Norma attended Rutgers University to pursue a degree in education while Nick joined the US Marines Corps. They exchanged love letters while he was in service and married soon after his honorable discharge, on September 6, 1952.
The newlyweds both pursued careers in education. Norma taught second grade at Ashland School in East Orange and retired from the East Orange School District as a Reading Resource Teacher. Nick spent his career teaching and serving as Athletic Director at Bloomfield College.
The arts aficionado Norma adored opera, theater, music and poetry, and the sports encyclopedia Nick raised four sons in Maplewood: Robert Jay Nichols, Jon (Ford) Beresford Nichols, Russell K. Nichols and Victor M. Nichols. She was a lifelong parishioner of the Episcopal Church of St. Andrew & Holy Communion in South Orange.
After Nick passed away in 2009, Norma remained in her beloved home until recently when she became too frail to live on her own. As family gathered to help her sort her belongings for her move to assisted living, they were astonished to find a treasure trove of her most precious belongings - hundreds of cards and letters from classrooms she visited, people she treated to the opera or theater, former students who tracked her down decades later to let her know how much she meant to them, a book written by a young man thanking her for teaching him to read, her two granddaughters’ college essays written about her, notes from the little girl next door thanking her for gifts and tea parties, and many more beautiful sentiments to a woman who touched everyone in her orbit. As beautiful on the outside as on the inside, Norma “Nana” Nichols twinkly eyes and dimpled smile lit up every room she graced in her 92 years.
Norma was predeceased by her parents, brother John and son Ford. She will be sorely missed by legions of extended family, friends, students, neighbors and most dearly by her son Jay of West Orange, son and daughter-in-law Russell and Susy of Caldwell, son and daughter-in-law Victor and Jen of Maplewood and her and Papa Nick’s most dearly cherished granddaughters Emily (husband Danny Wacha) of West Orange and Melissa (partner Jerome Bernstein) of Broomfield, CO.
A service will be held a later date. Donations may be made in Norma’s honor to NJPAC. A longtime supporting member, she attended its opening night gala in 1996 and enjoyed treating family and friends to many performances throughout the years. Nick was happy to chauffeur the patrons - if the game he was watching wasn’t a playoff.

James P. Maguire, Jr. - January 09, 1962 - April 12, 2024

Departed: 04/12/2024 (Maplewood)
Obituary Preview: James Patrick Maguire Jr, a longtime resident of Short Hills and proud father of three sons, died suddenly on April 12, 2024. James was born in New York City January 9, 1962 to his mother Patricia and father James P. Maguire Sr. He was the middle son, arriving in the world two years after his sister Melissa, and four years before his late brother Christopher. Growing up, he developed a passion for motorcycles, and was at his happiest when he was racing his motorbike around an improvised track in the backyard. James was a lover of music, specifically bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and the Grateful Dead. The passions he developed in his youth were carried on in his adult life, where he shared his enthusiasm with his sons and anyone who entered his life.
James grew up in Short Hills, New Jersey and graduated from Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey. At Blair, he was captain of the ski team and fostered many close relationships which he maintained throughout his life. James went on to attend Villanova University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and graduated cum laude. Beginning his career with Deloitte, Haskins & Sells, he learned the value of hard work and taking pride in his profession. James, maybe better known as “Jim” in the professional ranks, aspired to achieve greatly in his career. In pursuit of his ambition, James seized the opportunity to step into the role of Finance Director of Central and Eastern Europe while working at Schering-Plough. In doing so, he and his young family (wife Dorian and 2 ½ year old Patrick Joseph) moved to Budapest, Hungary. Although unfamiliar with the culture and region as a whole, James embraced the challenge and found immense joy in discovering the world in this way. Having helped rapidly grow the Central and Eastern-European pharmaceutical business, James’ next challenge was to lead the business as Operations Director from a new locale in Luzerne, Switzerland. It was in Switzerland where son Sean Christopher Maguire was born, expanding the family to four. Following his time in Budapest and Luzerne, James was entrusted to be the Finance Director of the UK and Ireland for Schering-Plough, this time moving the family to Harpenden, England where James’ third son James Patrick Maguire III would be born. After ten total years abroad and having traveled to countless countries across the globe, James and his family once again packed their bags and moved their home, this time back to where it all began in Short Hills, New Jersey.
James was a proud father, a loving son, an avid skier, a determined golfer, a passionate sports fan, a devoted music lover, and a motorcycle enthusiast. His greatest pride, however, came from sharing the things he loved to do and experiencing them with his family and friends. To James, perfect strangers quickly became his friends, and his friends became part of his family. His generosity and enthusiasm worked like a gravitational pull, and over his life James had invited so many to share in his world, and found great joy in doing so.
He is survived by his son Patrick and his wife Jessica, Sean, and James III; their mother Dorian, his parents James Sr and Patricia Maguire; his sister Melissa and husband Bill Sullivan; nieces Shannon and Jessica Sullivan; and his fiancé Kasia Rytelewski. He was predeceased by his brother Christopher John Maguire, whom he loved and missed dearly.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 16 from 4-8 PM at The Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Ave, Maplewood. Funeral Mass at 10:00 am on Wednesday, April 17 at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Ave, Short Hills.

Crawford "Ed" Sabin - May 03, 1930 - April 08, 2024

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Maplewood)
Obituary Preview: *In Loving Memory of Crawford "Ed" Sabin**
Crawford "Ed" Sabin, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and pillar of his community, passed away on April 8th, 2024, at the age of 93. Born on May 3rd, 1930, in Manhattan, New York, Ed was the cherished son of Elizabeth and Edward Sabin, hailing from the vibrant heritage of Dominica. He brought light, love, and laughter into the lives of all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and unwavering devotion.
Growing up in the diverse neighborhoods of Harlem and Brooklyn, Ed was surrounded by the rich tapestry of New York City life. From an early age, he embodied the spirit of determination and generosity, assuming the role of caretaker and protector for his mother and sisters, Sylvia, and Florence. Their Dominican roots instilled in Ed a deep sense of pride and cultural appreciation, reflected in his fluency in French, Patois, and later German, a testament to his thirst for knowledge and connection with others. Education was paramount in Ed's life, guiding him on a path of intellectual curiosity and academic achievement.
He attended Our Lady Queen of Angels School in Harlem, where he laid the foundation for a lifelong love of learning. His journey continued at Bronx Science, where he graduated in 1948, followed by Brooklyn College, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1952. Ed's pursuit of knowledge knew no bounds, leading him to NYU, where he obtained his PhD in Physics, a testament to his dedication and perseverance. In 1951, Ed answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Military. As a member of the Air Force flight squadron, he bravely served during the Korean War, stationed in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1955. Ed's military service instilled in him a profound sense of duty, honor, and camaraderie, values that would guide him throughout his life.
Following his military service, Ed embarked on a distinguished career as a cardiovascular pharmacologist, dedicating over three decades to groundbreaking research and innovation. His work at Schering-Plough Pharmaceutical Company, later becoming Merck, for 36 years, cemented his reputation as a leader in the field, earning him the respect and admiration of colleagues and peers. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ed was a devoted family man, finding joy and fulfillment in the love and laughter of his beloved wife, Sabarah. Their love story was one of true devotion, spanning over six decades and weathering life's ups and downs with grace and resilience. From their first date, in July 1959, to their magical wedding on a cold winter day in January 1960, Ed and Sabarah's love was a beacon of light, inspiring all who knew them. In the summer of 1959, Ed and Sabarah were introduced to Martha’s Vineyard. There, they fell in love again, with The Vineyard, which would become their second home. Ed's love for sports was legendary, rooted in his childhood experiences playing stickball with Tito Puente during the Harlem Renaissance. He was a die-hard Brooklyn Dodgers fan, drawn to the spirit of Jackie Robinson and the team's historic legacy. Over the years, Ed's allegiance shifted from the Yankees and later the Mets, but his passion for the game remained unwavering. His involvement in sports extended beyond the sidelines, as Ed coached his sister-in-law, Jackie, to the track and field Olympic trials and influenced countless others to pursue their athletic dreams. Whether cheering from the stands or providing guidance and support to young athletes, Ed's passion for sports was infectious, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
In addition to his love for sports, Ed had a deep appreciation for jazz music, cultivated during his formative years in Harlem. Growing up, he was an active member of the Catholic Church community, serving as an altar boy and contributing to various charitable endeavors. Ed's commitment to service extended to organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America and United States Track and Field, (USATF), where he volunteered his time and expertise to support aspiring athletes and promote youth development. Throughout his life, Ed remained deeply connected to his roots, cherishing the memories of his upbringing in Harlem and Brooklyn.
In 1972, Ed and Sabarah moved to Maplewood, New Jersey, where there were considerable opportunities for them to raise Chris and Leslie, in a promising community. They were one of the original “Brooklyn-West” couples to move to the suburbs of New Jersey. They shaped their family and established their home in Maplewood, where the door was always open. Ed actively participated in Chris and Leslie’s lives, from Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Indian Guides, and Indian Princesses to their sporting events like basketball and track and field. You could always hear him cheering from the stands and at times giving critiques, not just to Chris and Leslie, but to their teammates.
His Maplewood home was a sanctuary of warmth and hospitality, where friends and family were always welcome, and expected to stay over…laughter echoed through the house. Ed’s greatest joy in life was his grandchildren, Thaddeus, Quincy, and Tatum, whom he adored with all his heart. From picking up at school to attending their sporting events, he was a constant presence in their lives, offering unwavering support and unconditional love. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his grandchildren, a testament to the enduring bonds of family and the power of love to transcend time and space. We cannot forget his precious four-legged friend, Ginger, who was also the love of his life, whose tail would wag uncontrollably whenever he walked into a room.
He was a proud patriarch of his family, affectionately known as "Uncle Eddie" to his nieces, nephews, and extended relatives. In memory of Crawford "Ed" Sabin, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose light will continue to shine bright in the hearts of all who knew him. -- This expanded obituary captures the essence of Crawford "Ed" Sabin's life, honoring his accomplishments, passions, and the impact he had on his family and community.

Although she did not meet Kennedy she was able to share lots of moments and happiness through pictures and video. She adored being a great grandmother. She also knew before her passing great grandchild #2 was coming for Grant and Kaitlin, and #3 for Taylor and Paige Van Orden.
Blanche loved to sew. She made personal quilts for many which took hours on end, perfection, dedication and commitment. Qualities she always portrayed. She had the biggest heart and a beautiful smile. She was witty, fun, fearless and independent. From a co-worker “an angel of a person”. She was incredibly compassionate, LOVED TO EAT OUT, Florida vacations, and for a long time gardening. She was strong-willed and stubborn, but those traits defined “Ma”. They were part of who she was, and her strength undoubtedly helped her deal with life’s challenges.
One of her most stealthy attributes was her spirituality. She made an impact on many lives and believed in the powers of the “green scapular”; devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for Cures and Conversions. She would give it as the confidant strong in her faith to many. Those that received it from Blanche were thankful because it is the strength of her belief that enabled their healing.
She also contributes regularly to the “Covenant House” which helps youth facing homelessness and human trafficking survivors.
Blanche cared so deeply for the people around her. She was such a kind and unimaginably generous wife, mother and grandmother. She will be forever missed. “Ma”, “Gram” and “Sweetheart” until we meet again. Please come and honor the life of Blanche T Simpson: Visitation will be held at The Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Ave on Sunday March 10th from 2-6 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday at 10 AM at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Ave, Short Hills. Entombment in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery Gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in Blanche Simpson’s memory to the Parkinson’s foundation (Parkinson.org) or
St. Jude (stjude.org).

Mary C. Auth - September 12, 1941 - February 09, 2024

Departed: 02/09/2024 (Maplewood)
Obituary Preview: Mary Catalano Auth, 82 years old, passed away at home, with her family, in Maplewood on February 9, 2024.
Mary was born in Summit, NJ to her parents, Philip and Alexandria Catalano. She was the youngest of three daughters, and she adored her sisters Sondra Blum and Phyllis Yates.
Mary lived in Maplewood for her entire life, and was a product of the Maplewood-South Orange public schools, attending Jefferson Elementary, Maplewood Junior High, and Columbia High School. She received her undergraduate degree from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. She then worked in New York City at an advertising agency, and soon after that, she married the love of her life, Victor Charles Auth.
Mary was a pervasive presence in her family, in her children’s schools and activities, in Morrow Memorial United Methodist Church, and in her larger Maplewood community. She gave much of her time to Morrow Church throughout her life, including her work as Financial Secretary, as the head of the Church School, and as the director and heart of the Turnover Sale, a long-standing sale of community members’ donations for the benefit of local charities and others in need. For many years, Mary wrote a weekly newsletter for those people near and far who could not be a part of the church community in person.
Mary loved the color red—in her clothes, her jewelry, her lipstick, and her PT Cruiser. She was creative and beautifully artistic, expressing her talents in so many ways. She played the piano, and accompanied her husband on his violin, playing both existing music and original pieces they created together. Mary enjoyed quilting, sewing, painting, dancing (often at Kings Market), arranging furniture at the Morrow Turnover Sale, and curating and displaying her many collections in her house. She loved flowers and gardening, nurturing plants, trees, and flowers in her home and neighborhood. Mary took great joy in expressing herself in these ways, and you could see that in everything she touched.
Mary looked for ways to help others, and she had an incredible knack for getting people involved in it with her. She fought for anyone who needed support or love, without any need for acknowledgement. She was a friend to everyone, always with a kind word of encouragement and a smile for all, always trying to make others’ lives better.
Mary loved her family deeply, and was eternally devoted to their well-being. She and her husband were married for almost 55 years and enjoyed an incredibly close relationship throughout their marriage. She was a loving mother to her two children, and may have enjoyed being a grandmother most of all.
Mary is survived by her children Thomas Philip (and Karee Hanifan Auth) and Jessica Jean Auth, by her grandchildren Lillian Grace, Alexander Thomas, Alexandria Mary, and Camille Isabel Auth, by her sister Sondra Catalano Blum and her sister-in-law Norma Evelyn Auth, and by many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Morrow Church in Maplewood in the coming weeks to celebrate Mary’s life. For more information or to send condolences, please visit jacobhollefuneralhome.com
