Roma Lou McClanahan - January 12, 1931 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Pikeville)
Obituary Preview: Roma Lou Clark McClanahan, 93, passed from this life on April 15, 2024 in Lexington, KY. Her Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, at the Coal Run Church of Christ in Pikeville, KY, with visitation from 9 - 11 a.m. Minister Jerry Bliffen will officiate.
Roma was born on January 12, 1931 at Amba, KY to Rutherford Burchard Clark and Nora Annice Clark. She was a 1949 graduate of Betsy Layne High School, a 1951 graduate of Pikeville College, and a 1954 graduate of the University of KY with a BA in Education and Music, where she was a member of Phi Beta. In post-graduate work at Vandercook College of Music in Chicago, she studied with renowned musicians whose publications are still used around the world.
Roma wed Thelmer McClanahan, also a gifted teacher of music, in 1956 after a whirlwind courtship. They celebrated their 57th anniversary before his passing in 2013.
Unlike many who left their region for higher education, they returned to pass on their love of music to three generations of eastern Kentuckians. Between 1954 and 1985, she taught music at Betsy Layne, Mullins, and Johns Creek, becoming a mentor to generations of music teachers. Her high school choral groups consistently received superior ratings. When Pike County’s nine high schools collaborated on productions of Brigadoon and Unsinkable Molly Brown in 1967 & 1968, she was selected as the vocal instructor.
Roma was distinguished as a teacher by her readiness to innovate throughout her career. In her 60’s and nearing retirement, she discovered the Orff-Schulwerk model, raised funds for its costly instruments, and attended seminars to become expert in the method alongside her dear friend and colleague Janet Howson.
As a piano teacher, Roma was certified by the KY Music Teachers Association and mentored younger teachers in support of its high standards, for which her peers nominated her as KMTA Teacher of the Year in 1999. She continued teaching piano to students of all ages until age 84.
The exuberance that marked her as a teacher could be traced to her cheerleading days at Pikeville College, where she and her 1950-51 basketball team were honored by its Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002. She brought that same spirit to long-time community service in the Pikeville Concert Association, Delta Kappa Gamma society for women educators, and Order of the Eastern Star.
When asked about the most impactful experiences of her youth, she recalled childhood travel to all 48 continental states, Canada and Mexico. The scope of her travels eventually came to include much of Europe, Egypt and Israel. She was a member of a Pikeville College Chorale that performed throughout Europe in 1983.
Roma was baptized in her Christian faith on Christmas Eve, 1967 and was for the remainder of her life a member of the Coal Run Church of Christ, where she conducted its choir and served as organist for nearly three decades. At 84, she chose assisted living at Sayre Christian Village in Lexington, where her service as a worship musician made her a cherished member of its community. As Sayre’s nominee, the KY Senior Living Association bestowed upon her its 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award.
As a public school music teacher, band and choral director, private piano teacher, congregational music director and keyboard musician, her legacy includes countless students who credit her with a love of music that continues to enrich their lives.
Roma is reunited with her beloved Thelmer, parents, and eight siblings: brothers Orville (Kathleen), Cecil (Glo), Carmel (Marie), Vernon, R.B. Jr. (Thelma), Edford (Mary), Bernard (Peggy), sister Lora Jean (Windell) Stratton; by sons-in-law John Phillips and Todd Brewer; and by Carson Funk, fiancee of grandson Ben Brewer.
She is survived by daughters Marcia (Ballard) Cassady of Louisville, Jean Phillips and Sandra (Patrick) Holley, both of Lexington; by grandchildren Molly (Andrew) Smith, Cash (Cassidy) Cassady, Jacob (Jenna) Cassady, Ellie and Zack Phillips, and Ben Brewer; by great-grandchildren Olivia and Lowen Cassady, Eden, Lael and Sophie Smith; by sister-in-law Mearl Clark; and by many dearly loved nieces and nephews.
