Barbara Ann Hunt - November 10, 1937 - April 14, 2022

Departed: 04/14/2022 (Thomasville)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Williams Hunt, beloved wife, mother, nana and educator, went home to be with her Lord and savior on April 14, 2022. She passed away peacefully at Hinkle Hospice House of Davidson County after battling Alzheimer’s disease for over 7 years. She was 84. Barbara was born in Valdese, NC to Isa Powell Williams Epley and Woodrow Wilson Williams on November 10, 1937. She is survived by her daughter, Jatonna Hunt Garner, her son, Warren Hunt and wife Wendy, and her beloved granddaughters Devon and Dylan Gailey. She is preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Lee “Robin” Hunt and her brother Rex Warner Powell, who perished in the Korean War. Barbara graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College in 1959 with a degree in education and a minor in commercial art. She earned her Master’s degree from A&T University in Greensboro. She began her teaching career at Pilot Elementary School. Went on to transfer to Fair Grove and spent many years there until E. Lawson Brown Middle School was created in 1976. There she spent the remainder of her career until she retired after 30 years in 1993. Barbara lived for her students and believed that education was the gateway to success and spent her life making sure no child was left behind. She was a softball and cheerleading coach, mentor and tutor. She loved teaching social studies to her eighth-grade students and organized trips to Washington D.C., New York and Virginia to expand young minds. In 1998, she returned to her love of teaching at Shining Light Christian Academy until 2002.  In 2003, she accepted a position at Liberty Drive Elementary School for the next five years. Barbara worked tirelessly for 39 years molding young minds. Shortly after graduating college, Barbara met and married the love of her life, Oscar Lee “Robin” Hunt on July 2, 1960 in Morganton, her hometown. They moved to Thomasville and we’re together 55 years before his passing in 2015. Barbara loved everything Elvis and had an extensive collection of memorabilia. His gospel albums were her favorite music, and even though she never got to see him in concert, she was his biggest fan. In her late years, her battle with Alzheimer’s was long and arduous. It is a hateful disease that affects the entire family, but we can only imagine how hard it was on her. She was robbed of her memory, recognition, reading and writing skills, mobility and eventually her life. The one amazing thing was that even after Alzheimer’s had taken everything else, she still knew she was a teacher. Her passion was that great. She taught our family more about patience, understanding, forgiveness and selfless love in the last few years than you can learn in a lifetime. And through it all, even on her worst day, she managed to smile. Barbara was a true gift to her family, her friends, her fellow teachers, the community, and most of all to her thousands of students who will never forget Mrs. Hunt. The family would like to recognize the wonderful and welcoming staff of Hinkle House. There are no words to describe how grateful we are for the peace that was given to Barbara during the time she was there. Thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of a person's life. They also help to notify others of the passing and provide details about funeral services or memorial events.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide guidance on what information to include.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help others remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. You may need to email or fax the obituary text and photo(s) to the designated contact or use an online submission form.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

In most cases, yes. The cost varies depending on the publication or platform, with some offering free listings and others charging by the word or line. Be sure to check with the publication or platform for their pricing policies.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming more common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on your life and legacy, and it can also ensure that your story is told accurately and authentically.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing a person's death, while a eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service. A eulogy is typically more personal and emotional than an obituary.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary can be a celebration of the person's life, including their sense of humor. Humor can help make the tribute more relatable and memorable.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If you're unsure about including certain details, such as cause of death or sensitive personal information, consider consulting with family members or close friends. It's essential to be respectful and tactful when sharing information about the deceased.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality, interests, or values.

What if I need to make corrections to an already published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published and provide them with the corrected information. They will typically make the necessary changes as soon as possible.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication or platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may have a delay of several days or weeks.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In most cases, yes. If you want to republish an obituary on a specific anniversary or special occasion, you can resubmit it to the original publication or platform.

Are online obituaries permanent records?

Most online platforms archive obituaries permanently, making them accessible for years to come. However, it's essential to check with each platform for their specific policies regarding archiving and accessibility.

Can I create an online memorial page in addition to an obituary?

Yes! Many online platforms offer tools to create memorial pages where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences. These pages can serve as a lasting tribute to the deceased.

How do I deal with negative comments on an online obituary?

If you encounter negative comments on an online obituary, try not to engage with them. Instead, focus on celebrating the person's life and legacy. You can also report inappropriate comments to the platform administrators.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can also create a Facebook event or group dedicated to celebrating the person's life.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief?

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families prefer that donations be made to a favorite charity instead of sending flowers. Be sure to include specific instructions on how donations can be made.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

Can I write multiple versions of an obituary for different audiences?

Yes! You may want to create different versions for different publications or online platforms. Tailor each version to its intended audience while still conveying your love and respect for the deceased.

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

Draft out what you think should be included and then ask trusted family members or friends for input. You can also consult with a funeral home or crematorium for guidance on what information is typically included.
