Thomas "Mix" Verderame, III - April 18, 1958 - April 29, 2024

Departed: 04/29/2024 (New Haven)
Obituary Preview: Thomas Verderame III passed away suddenly at his home on April 29, 2024. Tommy “Mix” as he was known to friends and loved ones was a dedicated and loving father to his three children, Victoria, Tommy, and Natalia Verderame whom he adored and was always very proud of. Born on April 18, 1958, on Wooster Street in New Haven, he took pride in being part of a special neighborhood of people—these characters were often brought to life in the stories he told from growing up in a true Italian-American enclave.
After graduating Notre Dame High School West Haven, Tommy went on to Boston University where he graduated in 1980 cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.
In his professional life, Tommy was the epitome of a dedicated civic servant, working for more than 35 years with the City of New Haven, many of which he served as the Executive Administrator to the Director of the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Trees. Throughout his tenure, he was recognized with various accolades as a testament to his service. In 2022, after many years of serving the union, he was elected as Vice President of AFSCME Council 4 Local 3144. But none of the accolades compared to the lifelong friends he made on the job, most of whom became his second family.
In his free time, he enjoyed the company of his special group of friends who were like his “band of brothers.” From vacations to Florida and Cape Cod to Yale Football and Basketball games—wherever they went chaos was sure to follow—which always led to a good story for anyone willing to listen.
Tommy was a lifelong sports fan, following everything from tennis to horse racing. He enjoyed trips to Saratoga and was blessed to watch American Pharoah win the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes in 2015. However, nothing ever beat the love he had for the New York Yankees, which he shared with his children.
In addition to his love of sports, he was a true appreciator of music. Beatlemania might have arrived in 1964—but it lived on in his heart until the day he passed.
In addition to his three loving children, he is survived by his brother Vincent (Jodi) Verderame, his cousin “sister” Eloise Forte-Lee, and his companion Sabrina Moore. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Diane Levi Verderame, and his father-in-law, Hal Levi, as well as his nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-niece and many cousins and friends, all of whom he adored. He was predeceased by his mother, Eleanor Spino Verderame, and father Thomas “Mix” Verderame, and special dog Chance. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and loved him.
Visiting hours will be Friday from 4-7pm in the Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc., 11 Wooster Pl., NH.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00am in Blessed Michael McGivney Parish at St. St. Michael Church 29 Wooster Place, New Haven. Burial will follow in St. Agnes, Branford. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dan Cosgrove Animal Center.

John Batista DiPaola - June 21, 1945 - March 20, 2024

Departed: 03/20/2024 (New Haven)
Obituary Preview: John Batista DiPaola of New Haven died suddenly in Norwich on March 20, 2024. He was the husband of Mary Lou Apuzzo DiPaola. John was born in Amorosi, Provincia di Benevento, Italy on June 21, 1945 to the late Pasquale and Maria Ferrucci DiPaola.
He was the owner of Caffe Bravo, an iconic New Haven restaurant, for the last 30 years.
In his early years, John served in the Italian Army and received special recognition for responding to the devastating floods of Florence, Italy in 1966. In 1969, John arrived in New Haven with one suitcase, speaking no English, and a dream of building a new life. His innate work ethic was extraordinary, working three construction jobs to ultimately save enough money to send for his parents and nephew/brother, Frank. His ambition of a new life and owning his own home was coming to fruition.
He met his love, Mary Lou, at a single’s dance at Amarante’s in 1974. Unbeknownst to Mary Lou, John was on a committee to organize a dinner dance in the basement of Saint Michael’s church, and that was their official first date.
In difficult economic times, John lost his job so he seized the opportunity to begin his career in entrepreneurship, opening a fruit and vegetable market named Willow Farms on Orange Street. He promised Mary Lou a larger home to raise their children, Melissa and Mark Peter. In 1985, he fulfilled that promise when the family moved to North Haven in a house that sits on a foundation that John originally dug, often giving the kids rides in the backhoe.
John and Mary Lou then worked toward his dream of owning an Italian restaurant. In March 1994, 30 years ago to this month, John and Mary Lou opened Caffe Bravo, a staple of the East Rock neighborhood. They met many great customers and members of the community over the years that ultimately became dear, long-lasting friends. John is an absolute legend on Orange Street and will be remembered for his warm smile, genuineness and, of course, homemade Italian delicacies.
Later in life, having worked incredibly hard, John decided to treat himself for once, purchasing his dream car, a Ferrari 430. John and Mary Lou enjoyed many long Sunday rides, even driving to Montreal for the Formula One race.
John’s compassion, authenticity, humor, work ethic, sincerity and generosity will carry on for eternity through all that he gently touched throughout his life.
John was the father of Melissa (David) Knight and Mark Peter (Cristiana) DiPaola. Loving grandfather to John and Juliana DiPaola and Luca Knight. Brother of Pietro and Frank DiPaola and the late Rosa Velardi, Gabriella DiPaola, Linda Saracco, and Anna DiPaola.
Visiting hours will be Sunday from 3-6pm in the Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc. 11 Wooster Place, New Haven. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Michael Church/Blessed Michael McGivney Parish Monday at 10:00am. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery. He attended Ursinus College, where he majored in biology, served as class president for four years, and played both offensive and defensive end on the football team. In the summer of 1960, turning down a training camp invite from the Baltimore Colts, he began medical school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Upon graduation, he subsequently moved to New Haven, CT for his internship and residency at Yale.
Dr. Forrest served his country as an epidemic intelligence service officer with the U.S. Public Health Service doing work on cholera in Bangladesh before heading to Boston where he met Catherine Kiene. The two of them would return to New Haven in 1970 when Dr. Forrest served as Chief Resident at Yale New Haven Hospital. They subsequently married in 1971 and their home in Westville would become a fixture in the Yale and New Haven communities for the next 50 years, hosting regular dinner parties, housing visiting professors, and where there was always a tail-gate before Yale-Harvard football games. Dr. Forrest was a longtime member of the New Haven Chorale and would spend Christmas mornings at Yale New Haven Hospital where he helped organized a concert group singing hymns to patients.
As the embodiment of a doctor as both a healer and a teacher, Dr. Forrest had a passion for working with students. In 1987, Dr. Forrest established the Office of Student Research (OSR) at the Yale School of Medicine and for the next 23 years served as its director. In 2020, in recognition of his passion for student research and mentorship, the John N. Forrest Endowed Fund for Mentorship in Student Research at Yale was established. Dr. Forrest’s own research focused on the kidney and he pioneered studies in the salt gland of the dogfish shark that helped to better understand human disease. He did much of this research at the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, where he spent 46 summers as an investigator. He served as director of the institution from 1998 – 2009 during which time he was the creative force behind establishing the Center for Marine Genomic Studies. In addition to conducting experiments with students, Dr. Forrest was known for his love of outdoor adventure in Maine and would regularly lead students and colleagues on hikes up Katahdin Mountain via the Knife’s Edge Trail.
During his life, Dr. Forrest served as the president of multiple organizations including the Interurban Clinical Club and the American Heart Association of Connecticut; he received numerous accolades for his services including an honorary degree from Ursinus College in 2001 for recognition as “an internationally acclaimed physician-scientist, an inspiring teacher and medical educator, a compassionate physician and role model for medical students, and a discoverer of new genes and drugs from the sea.” In addition to numerous scientific publications, Dr. Forrest authored several books including Remembering Paul Beeson, a book that details the life and work of his mentor and former Yale Chairman of Medicine.
He is the proud father of John Kiene Forrest and his wife Emily Niemitz Forrest, Gwendolyn McCracken Forrest, and Suzanne Jaqueth Forrest and her husband Daniel Wong. Loving husband to his wife Catherine Forrest. Devoted grandfather of William Nevins Forrest, Andrew Niemitz Forrest, Rebecca Forrest Wong and Roselyn Forrest Wong.
Dr. Forrest will be buried at Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven. A memorial service and celebration gathering to honor his life will be scheduled this spring. Contributions in memory of Dr. Forrest may be directed to the John N. Forrest Endowed Fund for Mentorship in Student Research, Yale School of Medicine, Office of Development, PO Box 7611, New Haven CT 06519-0611. The Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc. is in care of Dr. Forrest’s arrangements.

Melpomany "Melba" Monaco - June 26, 1938 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (New Haven)
Obituary Preview: Melpomany (Melba) Monaco, born on June 26, 1938 in New Haven, CT, died peacefully on March 19, 2024, the first day of spring. Melba was predeceased by her father and mother, Leon and Mary Mavromatis, and her brother Nicholas Mavromatis. She was a devoted and loving wife for an incredible 59 years to Ralph Monaco and an endearing mother to her two beautiful daughters, Lisa Monaco-Gonzales and Andrea Monaco (Wieda). Melba and Ralph’s family grew when they were blessed with Andrea’s marriage to Steve Wieda, Lisa‘s marriage to Steven Gonzales and the birth of Melba’s two lovely grandchildren, Sophia and Steven Gonzales.
Melba grew up in New Haven and often told stories of when she worked at her Dad’s grocery store, the fun she had with all her friends in their close-knit neighborhood, and her fond memories of the Sunday family rides in the car, where she sat in the rumble seat as they joyfully rode through town.
Melba went on to graduate from college and became an elementary school teacher. Once she married Ralph and started having children, Melba dedicated her life to embracing her family and giving all of who she was to raise them.
Melba loved telling compelling fables with the intention of teaching life lessons to her children and her grandchildren. Melba empowered her daughters to be strong, independent, respectful, and kind. Melba had profound wisdom, she would listen intently, and when she offered advice it was honest and enlightening.
Melba was a very thoughtful and loyal friend. She cherished her friends from middle school to the present, always reflecting fondly of times spent together. She was selfless and sensitive – the reason why her friends called her “Saint Melba.” She always shared stories from her childhood, her college days, the many trips she took and the experiences she had. Often advising, “Do it while you’re young!” These memories brought her and others such joy.
Melba was a proud member of St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church, where she volunteered and created wonderful memories within the Greek community. Melba had a very full social life as a member of Golden Years Club, Odyssey Festival, Philoptochos, The Sons of Italy, The NewHavener Woman’s Club, past President of The Daughter’s of Penelope, book clubs, and card groups.
Melba will be deeply missed. Even with the health challenges over the last few years, she held on tight to her phenomenal sense of humor. Her laughter and positive outlook on life has been the blanket of comfort that has embraced all of those around her, encouraging others with faith and hope.
Melba lived a long and fruitful life. God bless her beautiful soul. Her sweet voice and tunes she hummed will forever sing in our hearts. And though we plead, singing a verse in one of her favorite songs…. “Please don’t take my sunshine away,” we must rejoice for Melba in knowing she is finally liberated, free of sorrow, loved in the heavens with her family and friends, and Almighty God.
Visiting hours will be Wednesday, March 27, 2024 from 10:00AM-11:00AM at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 480 Racebrook Road, Orange, CT, followed by funeral services in the Church at 11:00AM. Burial will be privately held. The Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc. is in care of her arrangements.
