Leonardo Ureña - December 24, 1926 - March 27, 2024

Departed: 03/27/2024 (New York)

ni la luna de noche. 7 Jehová te a guardará de todo mal;
él guardará tu alma. 8 Jehová guardará tu salida y tu entrada
desde ahora y para siempre. Leonardo Ureña (December 24, 1926 - March 27, 2024) Leonardo Ureña, a loving father and husband, of Santiago, Dominican Republic, transitioned from this life at the age of 97 on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at Calvary Hospital, Bronx, NY. He was born a twin in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic in 1926 to Jose Eugenio Ureña and Matilde Diaz, but he was raised by his aunt Juana Mercedes Ureña and his uncle
José Israel Peña (“Papó”).
Leonardo’s chosen trade was as a skillful tailor and seamster. He was an undeniable man of faith grounded in gratitude. He had a fundamental understanding that life is fleeting so he approached it with a positive, uplifting attitude and a bright smile, always choosing to see the goodness and abundance around him. Leonardo was an extremely caring, loving, giving, and joyful person. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, like long walks and calling or visiting family and friends. He was very family-oriented and thoroughly enjoyed relaxed quality time with his loved ones, but even a stranger could quickly feel like a friend in Leonardo’s presence. Leonardo enjoyed volunteering at a nursing home in Harlem where he would sing to the elderly residents and spread the word of God. He loved to play the guitar, listen to music, and watch the New York Yankees and Las Aguilas baseball games. He found humor and levity in any situation and never ran out of funny stories or jokes to tell. He was always the life of the party,
smiling widely, brightly, and bringing sunshine to everyone in the room.
Sadly, in January of 2024, Leonardo received the challenging diagnosis of advanced lung cancer, and just a few months later, he made his way to heaven. Throughout his journey, he embraced the reality of his illness with remarkable grace,  acknowledging that God was in control in all moments. He felt blessed with the years of life that God gifted him and approached each moment of his illness with unwavering strength and acceptance of life's natural course. Leonardo is survived by his wife Patricia Miledys, his six sons Leonardo, Bienvenido, Pedro, Luis, José, David, his three daughters Adria Esther, Marilyn, and Patricia Shaira, his brother José Miguel, and his many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He joins many beloved family members up in heaven, including his dear twin sister Altagracia and many
of his other siblings as well as his son Ignacio.
Leonardo was deeply loved by so many family, friends, and community members. His life was a testament to the power of positivity and gratitude, and his legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He left an indelible mark on all of our lives and we will miss him dearly. We will forever have a hole in our hearts but we know his spirit is always with us.
The Viewing is on Sunday, April 7, 2024 (10AM - 2PM) at International Funeral Services New York II (1761 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10031), and the burial is on Monday, April 8, 2024 (11AM) at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Yonkers, NY.
