Monica Lynn Knauss - July 06, 1971 - April 30, 2024

Departed: 04/30/2024 (Indianapolis)
Obituary Preview: Monica Lynn Knauss “Nickie” July 6, 1971 - April 30, 2024
Monica (Nickie) Lynn Knauss, mother to Joseph Paul Malone, Darrell Lynn Knauss II (Autum), who preceded her in death, Tyler Dane Malone, Logan Thomas Malone, and Gage Lee Knauss, Passed away on April 30, 2024, at 7:05 PM after a long battle with cancer. Her final moments were spent peacefully in her home in Indianapolis, surrounded by her loving husband and devoted sons and family.
Known for her loving heart and her beautiful crocheting, Nickie will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Everyone who had the pleasure of meeting Nickie knew her kids and grandkids were her entire world. She loved them all fiercely and unconditionally. Nickie never let anything hold her back. Even cancer could not keep her down! She could have chemo treatments one day and still show up at birthday parties, baseball games, holiday concerts or grandparents’ days at school, basically anything and everything right up until the very end. On top of all that, Nickie still managed to somehow keep Darrell in line since 2009! She loved sloths and goats and her 2 cats, Adina and Sahara. Nickie’s family asks that she be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life, not the sadness of her passing. We ask that you always remember Nickie’s compassion and generosity, how she would give to anyone in need, up to and including the very shirt off her back, and we ask that you pay it forward in her memory. Spread random acts of kindness in her name and wear your favorite “F*ck Cancer” shirt while you’re at it… Nickie will get a good laugh out of that!
Nickie was preceded in death by her mother, Sharon Foster; her son, Darrell Knauss II; and her grandson, Marcus Scott Malone (Logan). She is survived by her husband, Darrell Knauss Sr.; her brother, Jason Foster; her sons, Joseph, Tyler, Logan (Desiree), and Gage; as well as all the grandchildren with whom she was blessed, Connor (Joseph), Reni and Emmi (Darrell II and Autum), Hayden and Carter (Tyler), Kaine (Logan), and Keegan (Gage).
Please keep Nickie’s family and all who loved her in your thoughts and prayers as they learn to navigate through life with Nickie as their guardian angel.
A private ceremony will be held at Indiana Memorial Funeral Care and Cremation (3562 W. 10th St., Indianapolis, IN 46222) on Tuesday May 7, 2024. The family will receive friends there starting at 4:30PM.

She most especially cherished her time with the pride of her life, her granddaughter Kristin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary websites, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify friends and family of the funeral or memorial service details, and can also provide closure for those who are grieving.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online obituary websites allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the obituary and celebrate the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Absolutely! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life is celebrated in the way you want. Just be sure to share it with your loved ones so they know your wishes.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication, word count, and other factors. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a traditional newspaper obituary. Online obituaries may be more affordable or even free.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, corrections or edits can be made to an online obituary. However, printed newspapers may have stricter policies regarding changes after publication.

How long do online obituaries stay available?

This varies depending on the website or platform. Some online obituaries remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived or removed after a certain period.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Just be sure to obtain any necessary permissions or credits.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

You can still publish an obituary without including funeral details. Instead, consider mentioning a private service or celebration of life at a later date.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest donations to a favorite charity or cause in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and continue their legacy.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives, visit local libraries or genealogical societies, or contact funeral homes that may have records from past services.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you can republish an old obituary online. Be sure to give proper credit and attribution.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be an emotional task. Consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member, or seeking guidance from a professional writer or funeral home staff.
