Obituary Preview: Kishan Rao Bongu, 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on March 21, 2022. He was born in Alwal, India on December 12, 1927. He felt blessed and so proud of his Bongu family heritage, and he genuinely adored his parents, brothers, and sisters. His memories of them, notably of his brothers Narsing Rao and Raghupath Rao, stayed with him even as the others started to fade, and when asked where he was towards the end of his life, he always said, “I am in Alwal.”
After the passing of his beloved wife Madhuramma, he dedicated his life to his three children, Manga, Sanjeev, and Chandramathi, with the loving support of his extended family. He worked hard with his late and surviving brothers to grow the contracting business developed by their late father. He had an immeasurable thirst for knowledge and growth, taking classes ranging from languages such as Japanese and German to astrophysics and golf at the local university well into his eighties. He believed in strength of body as well as mind, and he practiced yoga, took long walks, swam, and joined Zumba classes at the local YMCA, meeting and developing friendships with folks whom he encountered along the way.
He believed in discipline and commitment and was inspired by science, technology, and design.
He loved good food, good company, and a good sense of humor.
He is deeply loved and will be dearly missed.

Rita Gambino - May 02, 1962 - September 14, 2021

Departed: 09/14/2021 (Raritan)
Obituary Preview: Mrs. Rita Gambino (neé Harihar), 59, of Mount Olive Twp., passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2021. Rita was born in Tokyo, Japan and spent her formative years living in London, England, and ultimately settled down in Budd Lake, New Jersey with her husband of 32 years, Mr. Russell R. Gambino.  They met and exchanged love many miles apart, during the times she was back in England living with her family. Together, they began a life of vast experiences and unconditional love, originating back to the friends that brought them together. It was here in New Jersey that their distinct cultures and all-encompassing perspectives unite to create a beautiful family.
A curious explorer, Rita was fond of absorbing more of the world every day. Prior to becoming a homemaker, she worked as a travel agent and spoke and wrote in a handful of languages, but was always oriented toward learning more. By the time she was married, she had already traveled to many countries globally and continued to share her love of traveling with her husband as they visited South East Asia for their honeymoon. As her family grew, she also initiated countless family road trips and traversed almost every state of America in her adulthood. Rita was inspired, daring, and genuinely loved others. People who have crossed paths with her say she was a wise and well-respected, feisty, and unbelievably caring woman, whom they will never forget their memories of.
She was a comedian and was her happiest when bringing smiles to her family and others through laughter. She had a positive and persevering attitude that radiated unshakeable strength to those she touched. She thrived and enjoyed being her best self as a wife and mother, brilliantly conquering her roles from Girl Scout Troop Leader to Dance and Marching Band Mom to classroom chaperone. In more recent years, she continued to feed her curiosity about the world by attempting new hobbies and adventures, such as cooking, woodworking, and crafting with her mother and daughters. She often found happiness in creating beautiful masterpieces for and with those she loved, especially during frequent family band sessions.
Rita was selfless and altruistic, something that cannot be said for many, giving her time and energy to others for the means of their happiness, even if it meant silently sacrificing herself. She will be sorely missed and forever cherished from all corners of the globe for her unique, passionate, and genuine soul that touched the hearts of many.
Rita is predeceased by her parents, Tattamangalam and Jaya Harihar.
She is survived by her husband, Mr. Russell R. Gambino and her daughters, Kristyne Jaya, Gabriella Lauraine and Noelle Rita Alexandra Gambino of Mount Olive Twp., New Jersey, as well as, her sister, Mrs. Shamla Mani, and family of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

Jaya was born in Kerala State, India, but lived abroad most of her life with her husband of 62 years, Mr. T.A. Harihar.  Although born in colonial India, both Jaya and Harihar were contemporaries for their time with a progressive outlook of the world and a joie de vivre, and were associated with various social and community circles.
Together they moved to Tokyo and then Kobe Japan, where she was a well-respected socialite, before starting a quieter life in Manchester and then London, U.K. She ultimately moved to New Jersey, U.S.A., more than 40 years ago to be near her children.

Dr. Ved P. Chaudhary - January 05, 1942 - February 05, 2021

Departed: 02/05/2021 (Raritan)
Obituary Preview: The illustrious Dr. Ved P. Chaudhary passed away on Friday, February 5, 2021. He was born on January 5, 1942, in the village of Dadora in the Etawah District of Uttar Pradesh, India, to father Babu Ram and mother Sushila Devi. Like his father, he was a devout Arya Samaji and learned a great deal from the teachings of Dayanand Saraswati. At an early age, Dr. Chaudhary was also inspired by two of his father’s uncles. One was very involved in local politics and affectionately called “Netaji”, and the other was a sadhu and local spiritual leader called “Swamiji”. These influences helped shape his belief that the purpose of his life was to provide help and comfort to everyone that he could.
An exemplary student and a leader throughout his adolescence, Dr. Chaudhary was the Prime Minister of the Student Parliament at his high school and gained renown throughout the surrounding villages. Because his opinion was so widely respected, the administrators in his school would have him interview candidates for new teaching positions and seek his opinion on potential new hires. He graduated from high school at the age of 16 with an interest in engineering, which led him to the agricultural engineering program at the highly selective Naini College in Allahabad where he graduated at the top of aclass of 20 elite students. Following college, Dr. Chaudhary took on a prestigious role with U.P. Soil Conservation Services in the Himalayan foothill town of Ranikhet, which was one of the places he remembered most fondly.
Dr. Chaudhary considered India his janmabhoomi (or land of birth) and the United States his karmabhoomi (or land of his work, action, and life). His life in the United States began in 1965 when he came to Rutgers University for higher studies and a research assistantship. This was the start of a long association with Rutgers, where he served on the Board of Trustees. He completed his Ph.D in Engineering in only two-and-a-half years at the University of Nebraska in 1969. His professional career spanned nearly 40 years, and included obtaining several patentsand serving in top management and executive roles at Bell Laboratories (a preeminent research and scientific development company responsible for several major telecommunications innovations) and Telcordia Technologies. He also spent two years in Brussels, Belgium as part of International Telephone and Telegraph, where he quickly rose up the ranks before deciding to return to the United States and Bell Labs. In a career brimming with impressive accomplishments, one of his crowning achievements was being appointed by the Governor of New Jersey to serve as Assistant Commissioner of the Office of Management and Budget in the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection from 2006 to 2010.
Dr. Chaudhary left an indelible mark on his community and the causes closest to him, in particular in promoting Indian culture, Hindi, and Hinduism. He viewed the American melting pot as a Garland analogy; in his own words, “flowers of various colors and fragrance, united together in a garland. That you maintain your fragrance and color, and identity, that you bring something that is uniquely yours, that you should continue to hold on to, and share with others. And at the same time, share in what others have brought to this culture.” As the local Indian community in New Jersey grew, Dr. Chaudhary began a program with a local temple, Ved Mandir, to facilitate local parents teaching Hinduism directly to kids and putting on cultural programs, which eventually grew into Self-Realization International (SRI). He was a co-founder and the first President of the Association for the Advancement of Asian Americans (4A), and was elected by the Board of the 80-20 Initiative to serve as the National Coordinator of the Collective Leadership of 80-20 in 2012. He served as Vice-Chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights’ NJ Advisory Committee, as a member of the New Jersey Governor’s Ethnic Advisory Council, and an advisor to the Board of Monmouth Center for World Religions and Ethical Thought. In recent years, he took great pride in his work with the Educators’ Society of Heritage of India (ESHA), which included serving as President and a Board Member of the organization and arranging Hindi StarTalk camps for school-age children throughout New Jersey, and served on the Board of Directors of Hindu American Seva Communities. He was deeply inspired by the Bhagavad Geeta, and authoring his own interpretation titled “Concise Geeta” in his Golden Years was one of his life’s most important works. Dr. Chaudhary’s efforts have been recognized by several local, state, and federal leaders, including a Commendation for Outstanding Contribution from the 80-20 National Asian American PAC in connection with his efforts with the administration of President Barack Obama, a Senate Citation from the State of New Jersey,an Award of Excellence from the Diversity Journal, and recognition from groups including the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the New Jersey Department of Senior Services, the Indian American Forum for Political Education, the Asian American Heritage Council of New Jersey, and the Indian Cultural Society of East Brunswick.
Dr. Chaudhary is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Rajjan; his brothers, Om and Jai; his sisters Maya, Siya, and Mamta; hisson, Suneal, and daughter Ranee; his grandson Leo and granddaughter Lila, and countless other family members, friends, colleagues, and community members whose lives he touched and provided inspiration to.
