Kay C. Morgan - November 21, 1941 - April 22, 2024

Departed: 04/22/2024 (Madrid)
Obituary Preview: Kay Charlene Morgan, 82, of Huxley, IA, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2024, at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, IA.
Kay was born on November 21, 1941, in Rhodes, IA, the daughter of Charles and Wilma [Williams] Shryock. Kay received her education in Rhodes where she graduated from high school. Kay married her high school sweetheart, William “Bill” Noel Morgan, Jr, on February 14, 1961. They soon found themselves moving to California with both sides of their families. Long Beach, CA would be called home, and this were they raised their three children. Kay started working at a nursing home, alongside her mother-in-law, Lois M. Dalton [preceded in death]; this would be the start of Kay’s career in the medical field, where she wore many hats over the years; CNA, Med Nurse, and Medical Records Administrator. Bill’s job took them to New Berlin, Wisconsin in 1991, and they moved to Madrid, IA in 1996. Kay retired from the medical field in 2000. After retirement, she worked at a Casey’s in Madrid for several years - the young kids kept her going! After Bill’s death, Kay called Huxley, IA her final home.
Even though Kay found herself back in her home state of Iowa, Long Beach is where her heart was. She loved hosting holiday gatherings at their home - the house was full, and her baked beans where always a hit [Chris (Kristi) Rossignol]. There must have been something special about that green crockpot! Many family adventures were had over the years; weekend barbecues, visits to Disneyland, and trips to see her family in Sacramento are just some of the highlights.
Kay loved listening to music and reading her bible. Her biggest joy was spending time with family. Many evenings were spent building Legos with her eldest grandson, Neil. These moments with Grandma will hold a special place in Neil’s heart, and their masterpieces will forever be on display. MiMi enjoyed talking and texting with her Washington state grandsons, Thadius and Tanner daily. Their visits to Iowa were filled with movies and good ol’ pork tenderloin sandwiches. Kay soaked up the fun and laughs when California family would visit Iowa; taking a drive and playing board games with Aunt Kay will forever be cherished. Thank you, Debby [Gwinn] & Nick Carbonaro and Billy & Ashley Gwinn (and the greats) for bringing such joy to your aunt’s life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a sister Ann Russell.
Kay is survived by her brother Charles (Louise) and brother Jan; sister-in-law, Judy (Bill) Gwinn; three children, Theresa Morgan, William Morgan, and Elizabeth (Buddy) Cunningham; three beloved grandsons; many nephews and nieces (great and great-great nephews and nieces); and many cousins. So much love and so many lives touched by a beautiful soul.
Kay will be remembered for many things, but her smile and unwavering strength will forever be etched in our hearts.
Memorial Services will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024, at the Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid.

Sonja Houseman - November 05, 1953 - October 14, 2023

Departed: 10/14/2023 (Madrid)
Obituary Preview: Sonja Eilene O’Connell Houseman left this world on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at the age of 69. A visitation will be held from 4-7 PM on October 18th at Iles Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Chapel. A funeral ceremony will be held at 11:00 AM on October 19th at St. John's Lutheran Church with a burial to follow.
She was born on November 5, 1953, in Manning Iowa to Daniel ‘Dannie’ and Icil O’Connell and grew up in Madrid, Iowa. She met a certain young man by the name of Don Houseman, when she was 15 years old and dated him all throughout high school. Sonja was a member of the 1971 class from Madrid High School. While Don finished his senior year, Sonja attended beauty school. On November 3, 1972, she and Don exchanged vows and began their family. Together, with their two children, they made their home in Madrid, where she worked at Federal Prescription. As their grandchildren came into the world, her occupation quickly changed to daycare provider. She was not about to allow anyone else to care for her grandchildren. And as they grew and entered school, she closely followed, becoming the lunch lady, as so to keep the teachers in line. Once the grandkids graduated, she retired from the Madrid School District in 2018.
It was not uncommon to catch Sonja playing cards or watching her birds. She enjoyed cheering on her favorite teams and trying her luck in the casinos, where she hit multiple jackpots over the years. Trying to get Don out of the casinos though, was not something she enjoyed. In September 2015, she and Don purchased their first Harley Davidson motorcycle. The two joined the Big Barn HOG Chapter in 2017, made extraordinary friendships, and went on countless adventures spanning across North America. Sonja was a selfless, compassionate, loving woman who constantly thought of others. But above all else, Sonja’s heart was devoted to her family. She loved Don unconditionally and the two celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2022. Her world revolved around their grandchildren and children. In her eyes, they were nothing less than perfect, and no one dare try to convince her otherwise.
She is survived by her husband, Don Houseman of Madrid, Iowa; Tonja (Doug) Greufe of Madrid, Iowa, Eric (Sarah) Houseman of Madrid, Iowa, four grandchildren; Paige (Jacob) Winters of Polk City, Iowa, Cole Houseman of Madrid, Iowa, Ethan Houseman of Ames, Iowa, and Eli (Madeline) Greufe of West Des Moines, Iowa. Sonja was greeted in Heaven by her parents, two brothers, Emerson O’Connell and Alan O’Connell, and grandson, Tanner Houseman.
Memorial contributions can be made to the family for a memorial to be directed later. Online Condolences are warmly welcomed at IlesCares.com, as we remember and celebrate the beautiful life of Sonja Eilene O’Connell Houseman.
