Catherine Miller Morgan Harris - June 08, 1918 - March 01, 2024

Departed: 03/01/2024 (Florence)
Obituary Preview: Mrs. Catherine Miller- Harris, the daughter of the late Mariah Marie Miller and Douglas Johnson was born on June 8, 1918. She entered eternal rest on March 1, 2024.
She was a graduate of Wilson High School, Florence, South Carolina and a graduate of South Carolina State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She taught in North Carolina in the Wadesboro District School system. She also taught in Lake City, Florence and Mullins, South Carolina.
After living and teaching in Wadesboro, Mrs. Harris returned to her native home and became the first woman of her race to open a public relations office where she was also an accountant. The office was located at 220 North Dargan Street. Hers was indeed a Public Relations Office.
Mrs. Harris opened her business on January 1, 1950 and closed June 8, 1983. Many worthwhile activities that were of great value to the public were carried on from her office. She was even a writer for the Afro-American Newspaper Company of Baltimore, Maryland.
Mrs. Harris enjoyed helping in many ways too numerous to mention here. One of the activities she enjoyed was preparing meals and sending them to older relatives and friends.
Politically, Mrs. Harris was involved for many years. She was one of the first in the Palmetto Voters Association where she served as assistant secretary urging people to register and vote. She was also a longtime active member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, sacrificing much of her time going door-to-door urging people to register and vote.
A devout Christian, Mrs. Harris was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where she co-chaired the Hospitality Committee and welcomed guests on the third Sunday of each month. Mrs. Harris took great pride in her community. One of her favorite projects was the Community Cemetery Project where she served as secretary until her health failed. Because of the many people Mrs. Harris assisted over the years, she was often stopped on the street or in stores. She was told by those that she had helped how happy she made them.
She enjoyed being of service to people and served with a “smile’. She was and continued to be grateful to the public for their cooperation in her endeavors.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Earl Augustus Harris and one sister, Ella Louise Hines Davis.
Left to cherish her fond memories are devoted nieces and nephews all of Florence: Rosa McElveen, Cornelia Davis, Daisy Vanderhall, Paul (Mae Francis) Davis, Eli (Cynthia) Davis, Elizabeth (Willie) Coleman, Jake (Clara) Davis, Jr, and Michael Davis, special cousin Sally Williams of North Carolina, and devoted cousin Marchell T.
