Mary Emma Smith - November 09, 1934 - April 29, 2024

Departed: 04/29/2024 (Macon)
Obituary Preview: Mary Emma Smith drew her first breath of her beloved Texas’ air November 9, 1934 on Postal Route 2, three miles outside of Beckville, Texas at her beloved Pappy’s farm. She was carried to her beloved Heavenly Father April 29, 2024. She sweetly graced the earth for 89 years.
Mary was the eldest of Elbert Egbert Sipes’ and Alma Lucille (Craig) Sipes’ five precious, lovely daughters: Francis (deceased), Peggy, Joy and Deborah (deceased). Always drawn to music, especially the classics, hymns and praise songs, Mary was a superb pianist and vocalist and blessed many churches with her singing and playing most of her life. Mary lovingly committed herself to a handsome preacher in her senior year in high school and she and Willie Fay Smith were joined in holy matrimony on Aug. 15, 1953 in Jacksonville, Texas. Mary always felt very secure in Willie’s love and she always supported him in whatever he felt the Lord was leading them into. Three sons quickly came to their home: Laurie Wayne (deceased), Gary Lynn and Keith Laird. Mary learned the joys of raising three boys while also active as a pastor’s wife and, eventually, becoming very active in women’s statewide missionary programs. The joy of telling people the Good News about Jesus was always uppermost with Mary and she and Willie would live in Calgary, Alberta as missionaries from 1969-1975. Over the years she also occasionally worked as secretary and office worker at a television station, a major retail store and a doctor’s office. But for most of her life, hundreds of enthusiastic students from Texas to Alberta to Missouri will attest that she was a stunning success as a cheerful, witty but thorough piano and vocalist teacher when most (but not all) of them were youngsters.
Mary had a keen mind and never earned anything but an “A” in her classes. Beckville, Texas (go Bearcats!) is where she attended most of her public school years. She graduated with an Associates Degree in music from Charles Stewart Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan in 1978. An avid reader and natural story-teller, Mary also authored three books, “Love Reaching”, “A Little Girl and a Big Farm” and “Bob Dog”. She loved her husband and family, the Word of God, God’s people, and playing Tchaikovsky or Brahms or William Gaither or Lanny Wolfe or...well, you get the idea. She was particularly fond of the Rocky Mountains and her favorite place was just outside of Estes Park, Colorado. Unless her favorite place was near Johnson City in the Hill Country of Texas. Or, it may have been anywhere where her grandchildren were. An excellent cook, Mary was heralded for her lavish and toothsome offerings from her oven for parties and get-togethers. Lemon icebox pie, turkey dressing, cookies, fudge and much more - she made it all happen to perfection and to everyone’s delight. She sincerely and powerfully prayed for many people, especially family members, pastors and missionaries, but was known to include as family treasured ones such as Alex LeCure, Lance Higgins, Dylan Cole and others. (You others know who you are...and, yes, God said “yes” to her prays. Get ready.) Mary and Willie lived mostly in Texas, but residences included Alaska, Alberta, Montana and Michigan. She was a long-time resident of Macon, Missouri and thoroughly enjoyed and was richly blessed by the wonderful people of Macon County and nearby communities. She was also truly blessed by the thoughtful, caring staff at Heisinger Bluffs West Nursing Home in Jefferson City, Missouri.
Mary is survived by her husband of over 70 years, Willie Fay, and her sons, Gary Lynn and Keith Laird (Debra), her grandchildren, Katherine Anne Smith (Chris), Elyssa Lynnette Smith (Kasey), Kurt Erik Smith (Maddy) and Lacey Nicole Morgan (Jonah), her great-grandchildren Atreus Jordan Smith, Henrietta “Etta” Lynn Smith, Indigo “Lottie” Charlotte Smith, Jericho Lee Morgan and Oliver Wayne Morgan.
Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Saturday, May 4, 2024 at the First Baptist Church in Macon, MO. There will be no visitation. Burial will be at New Prospect Cemetery in Beckville, TX at a later date. Family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church or Samaritan’s Purse. Arrangements are under the direction of Hutton & McElwain Funeral Home in Macon, MO.

He earned an accounting degree from Northeast Missouri State (Truman State University) in Kirksville. He married Sharon K. Saffell on August 14, 1966, in LaPlata, MO. She preceded him in death on July 11, 1985. He later married Zola E. Wright on November 11, 1995, in Macon, MO, where they lived until 2021, when they moved to Columbia, MO.
Jerry started working at C&R Markets with his brother-in-law, Richard Ramsey, as a box boy at just 13 years old. Although he took a brief break from C&R to work at the IRS in St. Louis after graduating college, C&R Markets was his life’s work. He went on to become a part owner and President of C&R Markets and helped expand the business to include up to 12 stores in the mid-Missouri area. He also served on the Board of Directors for Affiliated Foods.
Jerry served his Macon community in a number of ways. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Macon for over 50 years and served as an Deacon, Elder, Board Member, and as Stewardship Chair. He was as an active member of the Lion’s Club, Optimist Club, Elks Lodge #999, the Masonic Lodge AF&AM. He served on the Macon Country Club Board and the Macon City Utility Board. He was an enthusiastic participant in Carousel Productions, including a portrayal of Franklin D. Roosevelt in a production of Annie. One of his very favorite activities was being the voice of Macon Tiger Football, and he planned all his fall travel around it to never miss an opportunity to be in the announcer's booth to share his signature growl after every Tiger touchdown.
Jerry loved being a husband, a father, a grandfather, a grocer, a golfer, and a friend. He and Zola were members of The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia. He enjoyed traveling with Zola, especially to Puerto Vallarta each January. In May of 2023, they traveled to Egypt together, completing one of his life-long bucket list items. Jerry had a years-long standing coffee date with Macon friends that he kept up even after moving to Columbia. He enjoyed going on an annual golf trip to Biloxi with his buddies, attending Mizzou sporting events, turkey hunting, playing poker with his Columbia friends, and spending time with his family.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Zola Edwards of the home; two children, Stephanie Edwards Avedon of Los Angeles, CA, and Abbie (Chris) Edwards Chapman of Phoenix, AZ; stepson, Kevin (Belinda) Lindley Creston, IA; six grandchildren, Iris Avedon, Navi Avedon, Spirit Avedon, Grant Chapman, Carson Chapman, and Reese Chapman; two step-grandchildren; three nieces Brooke (Clay) Foster, Amy (Mark) Thomas and Dianna (Frank) Montoya; six great nieces and nephews, Ethan Foster, Avery Foster, Delaney Foster, Regan (Chris) Thomas Long, Chloe Thomas, and Skyler Thomas; and one great-great-nephew, Theodore Long.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the funeral or memorial service. They also provide a sense of closure and allow people to pay their respects to the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family members or close friends of the deceased write the obituary. However, it's not uncommon for funeral homes or obituary writers to assist with writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary should include the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also want to include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos of the deceased in the obituary. This can help personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Some newspapers may accept submissions online, while others may require email or phone submissions.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure their legacy is told in their own words. This can also help alleviate the burden on loved ones during a difficult time.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication, length, and features included. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for a traditional newspaper obituary. Online platforms may offer more affordable options.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. It's often used when a full obituary is not feasible or desired.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Yes, many people choose to include humorous anecdotes or personality traits in an obituary to make it more relatable and celebratory. Just be sure to maintain respect and tact when doing so.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow corrections or updates, while others may not. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting your obituary.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died suddenly or tragically?

Can I republish an obituary online after it's been published in print?
