Maria Cooper - October 07, 1992 - April 09, 2024

Departed: 04/09/2024 (DETROIT)
Obituary Preview: Maria Cooper, born to the union of Matari Cooper Sr. and Christie Cross (now Huddleston) on October 7, 1992, in Detroit, MI was much more than a birthdate and a name. She was the epitome of kindness and love, a shining example of grace and compassion to all who knew her.
As the oldest of four siblings, Maria embraced her role as a caring big sister with unwavering devotion. From her earliest days, she exuded a sweetness that was the cornerstone of her character, a gentle spirit that touched the lives of everyone she encountered.
Maria's faith was a guiding force in her life. As a young girl Maria was baptized by the late Bishop W.L. Bonner at Solomon's Temple Church at a special weeknight baptism service. Just one week later she received the precious gift of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues. She found solace and strength in her relationship with God. Her recent worship at KAM Church with her father reflected her deep seated spiritually and devotion.
A graduate of Fitzgerald High School, Maria excelled both academically and athletically, earning the highest honors as a Summa Cum Laude graduate, National Honor Society student and proudly cheering on her school teams. Her thirst for knowledge led her to obtain an impressive array of degrees: Associate of General Studies from Macomb Community College, Associate in Science from Washtenaw Community College, and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a specialization in General Psychology at Capella University. Maria was also certified as a Professional Coder, a testament of her dedication to her career at Corwell Health (formerly Beaumont Hospital) where she worked as a medical billing coder for the Radiation Oncology Dept.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Maria cherished her family above all else. Known affectionately as Ria, Muff-Puff and Muffin, she poured her heart into her relationships and gave freely, capturing precious moments in her journals and scrapbooks.
Maria love movies, Netflix series, seafood and make up. She also loved to travel. She fulfilled her dream of traveling to Paris, France last year leaving behind memories as beautiful as the pictures she captured.
Maria departed this life on Tuesday, April 9th, 2024, and her memory will never be forgotten. A true beauty inside and out, smart, creative, very thoughtful and filled with so much love. Maria cared about everyone she met. She was caring, loving, forgiving, prayerful and she always believed in doing the right thing. Anyone that had known her knew that she was ALWAYS KIND.
Maria leaves to cherish her memory, her loving parents, her mother, Christie Huddleston, stepdad Kenn Huddleston Sr., her father Matari Cooper Sr., stepmom Shanda Cooper, her sisters: Kayce Huddleston and Ciera Wright, brother-in-law, Yahya Wright, her brother, Matari Cooper II, who preceded her in passing. Other loving siblings include Brittney (Princeton), JaVaye, Kinlaya, Kenneth Jr., Raymond, Kiara, Jaylin and Justin, Great grandmother Betty Payne, her grandmothers Mahaley Cooper Woods and Betty Cross, Grandfathers Oliver Cross Sr. and Edgett Charles Cooper Muhammad (who both preceded her in death), Uncles Oliver Jr., Curtis and Tekoa, Aunts, Temeni, Lakela, Aunt/Cousin Stacy and a host of family and friends who loved her.
In this time of profound loss, Maria's family is grateful for the enormous outpouring of love and support they have received. As we all honor her memory, the family invites everyone to carry forward her legacy of kindness, humbleness, compassion and unwavering love. Maria may have left this world, but her spirit lives on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service details, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, such as the date, time, location, and burial details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper through their website, email, or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be sure to check their submission guidelines and deadlines in advance.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication, word count, and additional features such as photos or special layouts. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for a traditional newspaper obituary.

Are online obituaries free?

Some online obituary platforms offer free listings, while others may charge a fee for premium features or longer-term archiving. Funeral homes may also offer free online obituaries as part of their services.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the platform or newspaper. Online obituaries can be published within minutes or hours, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks to publish.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes. Online platforms may allow you to make changes or corrections to an existing obituary. However, printed newspapers may not permit changes once the obituary has gone to press.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can opt for a private listing on some online platforms or request that the funeral home only share it with close family and friends.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told accurately. You can store it with your important documents or share it with your loved ones.

What's the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing the death and providing basic information about the person's life. A eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate and honor the person's life.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to capture the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be mindful of your audience and avoid offending anyone who might be grieving.

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to repost or relink an existing obituary on special occasions like anniversaries or birthdays. This can be a meaningful way to continue honoring your loved one's memory.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief?

Taking on this task during a difficult time can be overwhelming. Consider asking a friend or family member for assistance, or seek guidance from a professional writer or funeral home staff member.

Can I include charitable donations information in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor your loved one's legacy and support a worthy cause.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

Gather information from multiple sources, including family members, friends, and official documents. Verify dates, names, and other details carefully before submitting the obituary for publication.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

What if I need help finding old friends or acquaintances to notify about the passing?

You can try searching social media platforms, alumni directories, or professional networks. Reach out to mutual friends or acquaintances who might be able to spread the word.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others might expire after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check the terms of service before submitting your notice.
