Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about their passing, funeral arrangements, and any memorial services. They can also help notify people who may not have been aware of the person's death.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or accomplishments. You may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's best to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to upload photos to accompany the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to share memories and celebrate the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure their story is told accurately and authentically. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and legacy.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, date of birth and death, and funeral service details. It's often used when a full obituary is not desired or feasible.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing a person's death and providing basic biographical information. A eulogy, on the other hand, is a speech or written tribute that celebrates the person's life and shares personal anecdotes and memories.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also okay to inject some humor or personality into the writing. This can help capture the essence of the person's spirit and make the tribute more engaging.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or difficult aspects of the person's life or death, it's essential to approach these topics with compassion and tact. Consider consulting with family members or close friends to ensure you're representing the person accurately and respectfully.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person's memory and continue their legacy.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Typically, online obituaries are published within hours or days of submission, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I make changes to an already published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published to inquire about their correction policy. Some may allow changes or corrections, while others may not.

Is it possible to publish an anonymous obituary?

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you want to republish an old obituary, you'll need permission from the original publisher or copyright holder. Be sure to check their policies before sharing or re-posting the content.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or archives may also have physical copies of old newspapers that can be searched manually.

Are online obituaries permanent?

Policies vary among online platforms, but many will archive obituaries indefinitely. Some may also offer options for removing or editing existing content upon request.

Absolutely! Social media can be a powerful tool for sharing news of a loved one's passing and connecting with others who knew them. Be sure to follow each platform's guidelines for posting sensitive content.
