Karen was born in 1942 to Frank and LaVerne Forman in Chicago, Illinois. As the oldest of three sisters, Karen was a natural leader all of her life. She used those leadership skills in every aspect of her life, whether it was within her family, her community, or her work environment. Karen’s family was her pride and joy and spending time with them was a highlight for her. Whether it was learning about her youngest granddaughter’s newest accomplishment or the older grandchildren’s most recent adventures, Karen enjoyed hearing all about their lives. In her last days, Karen listened as each of them expressed their love and thanks for a life well lived.

Dan R. Maguire, Sr. - April 22, 1929 - April 01, 2024

Departed: 04/01/2024 (Greenville)
Obituary Preview: Dan R. Maguire, Sr. sat peacefully in his favorite recliner the morning of April 1, 2024, and the next thing he knew was the joy of entering his forever home with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Dan was born April 22, 1929 in Big Rapids, Michigan to Frank and Letta (Lake) Maguire, the second of five sons. He graduated high school in 1947 and joined the United States Navy, during which two big life events set the course of his life. While his ship was at port in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he attended a Billy Graham Crusade, where he met and accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. Soon after, he met and married the love of his life, Elva (Hicks) Maguire in 1951.
When he finished his military service, he attended Philadelphia Bible Institute and became a home missionary, starting two churches in Indiana and Missouri. In 1957, he moved his family to Mount Pleasant, Michigan, where he served as a letter carrier for the USPS for 30 years until his retirement. He was also a faithful member and actively served in many capacities at First Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant.
From 1991-2006, he was the pastor of Weston Baptist Church, just outside of Adrian, Michigan. When his beloved wife of 54 years died in March of 2006, Dan moved to Greenville, where he became a faithful and much loved member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and elder, spent countless hours visiting those sick in the hospital and homebound, and made it his personal mission to be the church greeter, blessing all with a smile and hug and the warmth of someone who deeply loved his Lord and Savior and wanted all to know that love.
He is survived by his five children: Dan (Kathy) Maguire of Greenville, Elva (Mike) Farrell of Greenville, Faith (Dan) Bender of Sinclairville, New York, Ruth (Tim) Hunt of Mount Pleasant, and John (Jean) Maguire of Grand Haven; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; his brother, Robert “Bob” Maguire of Big Rapids; two sisters-in-law, Diane Maguire of Six Lakes and Evelyn Hicks of Three Hills, Alberta, Canada; and many friends and church family who loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; a granddaughter, Emily Farrell; three brothers and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Frank and Betty Maguire, Archie and Joanne Maguire, Richard Maguire, Earl Hicks, Jr., Esther and Nelson Loux, Bob and Dorothy Hicks, and Jim Hicks; and parents-in-law Earl and Esther Hicks. One of Dan’s favorite verses says: “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 15:58)

Patricia Jean Gillett - February 22, 1934 - March 23, 2024

Departed: 03/23/2024 (Greenville)
Obituary Preview: After a brief illness, Patricia Jean Gillett, 90, of Zeeland MI passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Holland Hospital with her loved ones at her bedside, including her husband and love of her life, Dave Gillett. The time of her passing included prayers, scripture readings, a benediction, and the singing of Amazing Grace by her children and grandchildren.
Patricia Hansen was born on February 22, 1934, in Racine, Wisconsin to Alton and Muriel Hansen and was the eldest of 5 children. The family moved to Trufant, Michigan when she was about 8 years old where she attended Lakeview Public Schools. In her youth and young adult years, she served with her parents at Pleasant Hill Bible Camp on Bass Lake near Gowen, Michigan where she learned her love of serving God’s people.
Patricia attended Central Michigan University (CMU) where she studied to be a teacher. While there, her roommate, Louise Gillett, invited her brother Dave Gillett, who was attending Western Michigan University (WMU), to take her to the CMU Homecoming Dance. Louise asked Dave to bring a friend for Patricia to attend the dance with. However, when they arrived, Dave Gillett “took one look at her” as he always says, and shrewdly asked his friend if they could switch so that Dave could take Patricia to the dance. The rest, as they say, is history! Dave and Patricia were married in August 1954 and were inseparable through thick and thin for nearly 70 years.
Dave and Patricia stayed in the married housing unit while Dave finished his degree at WMU. After several years living and working in Greenville, the family (now with 4 children) moved to Grand Rapids where Pat eventually finished her degree and became a much-beloved preschool teacher for Northview Public schools. Her patient, gentle manner nurtured a love of learning for hundreds of young students over the course of her 17 years of teaching.
Patricia retired in 1991 and moved back to Greenville to be close to her mother, Muriel Hansen. Dave and Pat were active members of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she loved making quilts for the needy along with her mother who was also the church organist for many years. Perhaps her favorite pastime was spending time with her nine grandkids (and more recently, seven great-grandkids) – especially at their cottage on Turk Lake or their place in Ellenton, Florida. Nothing was too good for her grandchildren whether it be baking, sewing, or teaching them how to be devious card sharks, especially if it was at grandpa’s expense! Pat’s example of love, self-sacrifice, and faithfulness will live on through these grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Patricia also enjoyed singing and playing the autoharp in a group named “The String-a-Lings” along with Dave who played the standup bass. The group played many concerts and jam sessions in both Greenville and Ellenton.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, Alton and Muriel Hansen (Greenville) and daughters Pamela Gillett and Denise Gillett Ludwig.
She is survived by her husband, Dave of Zeeland; sister, Marilyn Nielsen of Gowen; brothers, Owen Hansen of Spring Lake and Noel Hansen of Canton, MI; and adopted sister, Vicki Harvey of Ionia. Surviving children include Daniel (Sherrie) Gillett of Zeeland, Beth (Joel) Krygier of Kalamazoo, and Bruce (Katie) Gillett of Belmont, MI; as well as son-in law, John (Jill) Ludwig of Frankfort, IL. Grandchildren include Joshua (Lydia) Gillett of Hamilton, Stephanie Gillett of Zeeland, Neil (Samantha) Ludwig of south Chicago suburbs, Alicia Ludwig of south Chicago suburbs, Samuel (Michele) Krygier of Kalamazoo, Abigail (Zane) Burris of Lawton, and Isabelle, Isaac, and Eli Gillett of Belmont, MI; as well as step-grandchildren, Eric of Dallas, TX, Andrew of Dallas, TX, and Audrey Studer of Chicago. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Beckett, Jayden, Elliana, Josie, Paisley, Skyla, and Kinsley as well as several nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Charles Gager - October 17, 1938 - March 20, 2024

Departed: 03/20/2024 (Greenville)
Obituary Preview: Kenneth Gager, age 85, of Greenville died March 20 in East Grand Rapids. He was born in Detroit October 17, 1938 and moved to the Grand Rapids area in his childhood, graduating from Creston High School in 1956. He was an accomplished journeyman patternmaker/modelmaker and worked “on the bench” at Rapid Pattern & Plastics in Grand Rapids for over 37 years, ultimately teaching himself the technology necessary for his changing trade and becoming a computer designer for many years. He was an avid model railroader who never had a real layout, choosing instead to putter and finesse his train equipment and use his talents to benefit others in the hobby. To those who knew him, he was like a gem with many facets – some brilliantly polished and some still a bit rough around the edges but a real jewel, to be sure!
He married Judy (Riker) in 1959 and because of his personal disjointed school experiences, he was adamant that his children would attend the same school district throughout their education to make close friends for a lifetime. They moved to the Greenville area in 1961 to make that happen.
Judy survives, along with their three children: Michael (Sandi) Gager, Wendy (John) Sinicki, and Steven (Janice) Gager; seven grandchildren: Brittany (Noah) Siegel, Caitlyn (Seth) Thompson, Nathan Sinicki, Annmarie Sinicki, Samantha “JoJo” (fiancé: Joe Maki) Gager, McKenzie Gager, and Fischer Gager; six great grands: Elsie, Levi, Miles and Hadley Thompson, and Hunter and Logan Siegel. He is also survived by his brother, Earl (Beverly) Gager; a half-sister, Charlene (Richard) Amacher; and other extended family members. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Earl Edward and Lillian (Thornton) Gager.

From a young age Fred had played a major role in raising his siblings. At age 17, he convinced his parents to let him join the U.S Marine Corps. He traveled across the United States on his motorcycle, managing to step foot in every state, except Alaska. Outside of the United States he had rode to Mexico and Canada, but his adventures did not stop there. As a hobby, Fred took on skydiving and eventually became extremely talented at it. Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family members or close relatives of the deceased write the obituary. However, it can also be written by a funeral home, a friend, or even the person themselves before their passing.

What information should be included in an obituary?
