Jean Dewey - December 02, 1933 - February 18, 2019

Departed: 02/18/2019 (McKeesport)
Obituary Preview: Jean (Martin) Dewey of Virginia Beach, VA, died February 18, 2019. Ain’t no grave, gonna hold me down!
On December 2, 1933, she was born in McKeesport, PA to Agnes and James Martin. Married for 55 years to husband, Jerry, who preceded her in death in 2012, they moved between Pittsburgh, PA; Fairmont, WV; and Toledo, OH - raising their four girls (Bobbi Case, Nancy Grice, Jeri Lee Edwards, Robyn Card) and one boy (Marty Dewey) - before settling in Virginia Beach in 1979.
While in Pittsburgh, she held several administrative jobs. Following in her mother's footsteps, she was drawn to the medical field. She worked in hospitals in Toledo and Virginia Beach, spending 24 years at Virginia Beach General, and 6 more years at Sentara before retiring.
Music was a big part of her life. It started with drums in the school marching band, because they were the only free instrument available to students (her dad passed away when she was 15). Later, as a mother, she moved on to directing church youth choirs during their time in Ohio. She watched all of her kids get involved with music along the way. While she encouraged her children to play music she was also blessed to see her grandchildren get involved with music too.
In addition to music, Jean enjoyed doll making, sewing, camping, Steelers football, and Christmas. Her love of family and music culminated with "The Family Band". Her children, their spouses, her 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, as well as extended family and friends, have many fond memories of spectacular annual impromptu, but mandatory, Christmas living room concerts. Best of all, thanks to Jesus, the band will one day reunite - this time forever.
A graveside service and interment will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at Mount Vernon Cemetery (McKeesport, PA). A memorial celebration will be held at 6:00 pm on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at New Creation Assembly of God Church (Virginia Beach). Family visitation is at 5:30 pm. Reception following. Come prepared to sing. Arrangements by Striffler Funeral Home in McKeesport, (Hunter-Edmundson-Striffler), 600 Market St., McKeesport, PA 15132 (412) 678-6191.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help facilitate communication among loved ones, allowing them to share condolences and plan memorial services.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes the obituary, but it can also be written by a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life, personality, and accomplishments to create a meaningful and accurate tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or flowers in lieu of gifts.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries may allow for longer tributes or additional photos and stories.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and provide a visual representation of the deceased person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may accept online submissions, while others may require email or phone submissions. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows individuals to reflect on their life and legacy. However, it's essential to keep in mind that the final version may need to be edited or revised by family members or funeral homes.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the tribute. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. Online obituaries may allow for edits or corrections within a certain timeframe. It's essential to proofread carefully before submitting the final version.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the passing of a loved one, you can opt for a private obituary or memorial page on an online platform. This allows you to share information with select individuals while maintaining privacy.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased person. Including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can help capture their essence and make the tribute more engaging and relatable.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or websites that specialize in historical records. Many libraries also maintain microfilm collections of old newspapers that can be searched manually. Additionally, you can contact local genealogical societies or historical organizations for assistance.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

It's generally acceptable to republish an old obituary online as long as you're not infringing on any copyright laws. Be sure to cite the original source and publication date if possible. You may also need permission from the original author or publisher.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of someone's passing, often including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life, accomplishments, and surviving family members.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, poems, or lyrics that resonate with the deceased person's personality or spirit can add depth and meaning to the tribute. Choose something that reflects their values, interests, or sense of humor.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately. They may be able to correct the mistake online or issue a correction in a subsequent edition.

Can I create an online memorial page instead of publishing an obituary?

Yes! Online memorial pages allow you to create a personalized tribute with photos, stories, and memories. These pages can remain active for years to come, providing a lasting legacy for loved ones.

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be overwhelming. Consider consulting with family members, friends, or a funeral home director for guidance on what details are most important to include.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share news of a loved one's passing with friends and acquaintances. You can also create a memorial page on these platforms.

How do I preserve an original copy of an obituary?

You can save a physical copy of the newspaper clipping or print out a digital version from online platforms. Consider laminating or framing the original copy for preservation purposes.

Can I write multiple obituaries for different publications?

Yes! You may want to tailor different versions of the obituary for various audiences or publications. For example, you might write one version for local friends and another for colleagues or alumni networks.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider enlisting the help of a friend, family member, or professional writer. Funeral homes often provide guidance and resources as well.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, verify facts with multiple sources whenever possible. Double-check dates, names, and spellings before submitting the final version.
