Ruth Pauline Moran - January 15, 1947 - April 26, 2023

Ruth was born January 15, 1947 in North Bend, Oregon. In her early childhood, she moved to the Red Bluff, California area with her family. While in California she had two daughters Ruth Roxanna Clinton and Carol Christine Clinton and one son John Theodore Baker. In the early 1970s she moved to Naples, Idaho with her husband, James Frederick Moran and his two sons James Gregory Moran and Jason James Moran. Together, Ruth and James had two more daughters, Virgie Mae Moran and Rebecca Rose Moran. In 1983 her husband Jim and daughter Roxanna were murdered and Ruth adopted Roxanna’s son J. Paul (Plumley) Lightfoot. In 1985 Ruth married Chuck Lightfoot and he had two sons Charlie Lightfoot and Andy Lightfoot. Ruth and Chuck and the nine kids moved just outside of Red Bluff to Ponderosa Sky Ranch in Tehama, California. In 1987 and Ruth and the family moved to O’Brien, Oregon. After a divorce in 1990 she was a single mother until all the kids grew up and moved out except J. Paul. Ruth and J. Paul moved again to Red Bluff where Ruth worked as a cashier and in the florist and deli departments at a grocery story. She also owned her own party decoration business. In 2009 Ruth returned to O’Brien to be closer to her daughter Virgie Moran and grandsons Jared Moran Peterson and Jacob Bobby Moran-Baty. She lived out the rest of her days in O’Brien.

Ruth was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge #2002 in Red Bluff.

Her hobbies included amazing beadwork especially the peyote stitch and earrings with porcupine quills; painting yard deco that she could display in her own yard amongst her flower beds; gardening; and other crafts.

Survivors include children Carol Clinton of Spokane, Washington, James Moran of Klamath Falls, Oregon, Jason Moran of Anchorage, Alaska, John Baker of Spokane, Washington, Virgie Moran of O’Brien, and J. Paul Lightfoot of Tucson, Arizona; brother George Baker of Red Bluff, California; sister Rachel Baker of Corning, California; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by spouse Jim Moran; children Roxanna Clinton and Rebecca Bivens; brother Mitchell Baker; and her parents Louis and Ruth Baker.

Donald Wayne McCoy - June 10, 1937 - April 23, 2023

Obituary Preview: Donald Wayne McCoy, of Grants Pass, OR, passed away at age 85 in his home early in the morning of April 23rd after battling pancreatic cancer.

Don was born in Medford, OR on June 10, 1937 to Maurice Arthur McCoy and Alice Belle Hay. He grew up in Grants Pass, graduating from Grants Pass High School in 1956. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from Southern Oregon University and a master’s degree in administration from University of Oregon. He joined the Army Reserves in 1958 and was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis, serving until 1964.

In 1959 Don married Darlene Pigg and they raised their boys, Patrick and Sean, in Central Point and Grants Pass. Darlene passed away in 1985.

Don spent 33 years in education, teaching at every school in Central Point and coaching every sport at one time or another. He was an original teacher at Scenic Junior High, teaching math and science. He also taught reading, especially working with kids who had extra trouble. Later in his career he worked as vice principal of Flemming Middle School and then principal of Selma Elementary.

In 1987, Don married Joanne Fleishman Slaven and spent the rest of his life together with her. They shared a passion for traveling, spending winters in Yuma, Arizona, visiting Europe, Asia, Australia, Egypt and the Holy Land seeing all 50 states, 48 in their well-loved motorhome.

He deeply loved his family and he and Joanne enjoyed camping, darts, mini golf, and many other activities with their granddaughters, cheering them on in any and all achievements. He loved spending time fishing, competing in shuffleboard tournaments, having weekly game nights with friends and cheering on his beloved Oregon Ducks.

Serving in various roles in First Christian Church in Grants Pass, Don was appointed Elder and greatly valued the time he spent serving in that capacity. He was a devoted Christian and always looked for ways to bring light into the lives of everyone that he met.

Don is survived by: his wife, Joanne McCoy; son, Sean McCoy; sister, Sally Wright; 5 grandchildren – Jessica Taylor, Lela Miller, Creedance McCoy, Alissa McCoy and Abby McCoy; and 5 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by: his parents, Maurice and Alice McCoy; his older brother, Ronald McCoy; his son, Patrick McCoy; and his great-granddaughter, Ava Daniels.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 29th at First Christian Church 305 SW H Street, Grants Pass, OR 97526. Donations can be made in memory of Don to Helen Speares Cancer Center or Asante Hospice.

Obituary Preview: Neva Belle True, age 98, courageously graduated from her Grants Pass home to her long-anticipated heavenly home on April 22, 2023.

Neva was born November 15, 1924, to Arch and Belle Hamm of Shambaugh Iowa. She attended Wheaton College where she first met a dashing young man named Carroll True. Following her graduation from college she moved to Tucson, AZ where she worked for the late Reverend R.S. Beal. Perhaps prompted by Neva’s hint that “faint heart ne’er won fair lady” Carroll True courted and later proposed. The couple married on June 20, 1950, embarking on a journey of love and commitment that was to span over 65 years of marriage.

Neva was an exceptional homemaker, investing in the lives of her family as well as reaching out to her many friends with calls, notes, and get-togethers. Both Neva and Carroll were talented musicians. She played the piano, marimba, and vibraharp and loved to sing. She was also a gifted writer authoring numerous short articles.

Neva and Carroll moved to Grants Pass in the 1990s where they became active in the life of local churches Calvary Crossroads and Calvary Chapel.

The essence of Neva’s one-of-a-kind life was simple: whether you moved in next door, dialed her phone number in error, visited a Church she attended, or were part of her own family, Neva wanted you to know that you were loved both by her and by her closest friend, Jesus. God used Neva to introduce countless individuals to a personal relationship with Christ and assist others in the journey of faith and life. Whether through her chicken dinners, tea parties, phone calls, cards and letters, or just a conversation on the porch, Neva connected with people and helped them connect with God’s love.

Neva was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll. The remaining family members include her children David True, Sharon Cunningham, Paul True, and grandchildren Matthew Jones, Nathan Jones, Heidi True, Jonathan True, Melinda True, and Michael Provder. She had 13 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Neva’s Life will be held for family and friends Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Hull and Hull Funeral Home. Viewing will be from 10:00 - 10:45 AM with her service commencing at 11:00 AM. Forrest was born on February 10, 1998 to Forrest G. Angwin III, and Karensa Hawley in Medford, OR. He attended Fruitdale Elementary, Lincoln Savage Middle School, Hidden Valley High School, Grants Pass High School and graduated from El Cajon High School in 2016.

In 2022, Forrest met Cheyenne Crowl and began to build their life together, with plans of getting married and growing their family. He gracefully took on the role of dad, to Cheyenne’s son, Logan.

Forrest was a true southern Oregon kid, hardworking and always looking for adventure. He had an irresistible smile, made friends with anyone that crossed his path, and was known by most as “Sawdust”. He was an avid enthusiast of many different hobbies: Muay Thai, everything automotive, mountain biking, welding/fabrication, and as his dad would say, all around redneckery.

Forrest is preceded in death by his sister, Karlee. He is survived by his father, Chip, mother, Karensa, stepmother, Lisa, stepfather, JD, and his siblings: Andrew, Brandon, Emily, Katie, and Brittnee.

Services will be held at Edgewater Christian Fellowship, 101 Assembly Circle, Grants Pass, OR 97526, on April 22, 2023 at 2:00 PM. BBQ to directly follow at Field’s Park in Murphy OR.

A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, April 19 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lost Camp Bar and Grill in Kerby, OR. Derick was born March 1, 1984 in Anchorage, Alaska, to Debbie and Rick Williams. He was the eldest of three brothers, with whom he shared a special bond. After graduation, with honors, from Service High School in Anchorage, AK, he attended Montana State University in Bozeman. In 2006 he earned a bachelor’s degree in fish and wildlife biology. He worked for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game before moving to Selma in 2016.

On February 19, 2010 Derick married Amanda S. Eguia, the love of his life with whom he did everything. In Selma, Derick and Mandy started their own tractor business and recently purchased a native plant nursery as their new profession. Derick grew up enjoying everything that Alaska had to offer. He loved competitive sports including baseball, soccer, swimming, cross-country and downhill skiing. In junior high, he took up snowboarding, which led to his love of snowboarding the back country with friends and his dog, Boz. Derick also was an avid fisherman and hunter. Derick was loving, brilliant, and always a ray of sunshine for all. He was known as a kind and gentle soul.

Derick is survived by his loving wife Mandy, mother Debbie Seyer and father Rick Williams, stepfather (and wingman) Clint Seyer and stepmother Sara Williams; brothers Deven Williams and Dylan (Sophia) Williams. He leaves behind his uncles Dick and Larry, mother-in-law Toni Eguia, sisters-in-law Roni and Rebecca, brother-in-law Chris as well as special friends Chris, Adam, Tom, Janet, Grandma Melba, Auntie Pauline, Scott, Gina, Jessi and Clay and too many more to count. And he will be missed by his beloved dog Yeti and cat DaVinci. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law Charles Eguia and his sister- in-law Victoria Eguia.

Karen Marie Bodeving - September 19, 1960 - April 07, 2023

Obituary Preview: Karen passed on at Three Rivers Hospital on Good Friday morning, surrounded by her family. She put up a valiant battle with Multiple Myeloma for almost three years. There was no one more loyal and dedicated to her family and friends than she was. Born in Eugene, OR, on September 19, 1960, Karen was the first of three children to George and Darlene Trahern. She moved to Josephine County when she was just a few days old and became the fourth generation of her family to live in the area, as her father and grandmother were born here and her great grandmother was born on a wagon train headed here. Most of Karen’s life was spent here, except two years in Grant County when she was in the 4th and 5th grades and two years in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Europe). Karen graduated from Grants Pass High School in the class of 1978 and started college in Linfield until transferring to Southern Oregon College where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science. Karen met her husband, Paul Bodeving while attending college and they were married June 12, 1982. Following her graduation, they moved to The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg for two years where Paul’s family lived. While there, she worked for a newspaper and became active in a marching band. When they returned to Grants Pass, Karen worked for the family at North Valley Auto Center as an F&I director for two years before continuing her education and earning her Certified Public Accountant designation. After working for Virginia Christensen She opened her own CPA office. Karen was totally dedicated to her clients for over 32 years until cancer forced her to retire in the spring of 2022. Karen was a very caring person giving of herself in every endeavor she took on. She believed in doing her best and was a lifelong learner. She was always on the go devoting herself to her family, her work and her friends. In the late 1980’s, she picked up a stray St. Bernard dog at North Valley Auto Center and fell in love with the breed, which led to her and her husband Paul raising some of the best St. Bernards in the world. They bred, trained, showed, mentored and judged St. Bernard shows all over the United States as well as judging in Germany, Austria, Denmark, Netherlands and Luxembourg. Karen was very active in the community as well as the dog world. In her working years she was active in the Grants Pass Chamber of Commerce (Greeters), the Josephine County Republican Women (president) and she organized and became a charter member of the Illinois Valley Rotary Club and twice served as President as well as other offices. At the time of her death, Karen was President of the National St. Bernard Dog Club of America for the second time. Karen served as President and other offices in the Rogue Valley Kennel Club, the local St. Bernard Club of Southern Oregon. She also served on various boards and civic organizations during her life. Karen was a strong believer in donating back to the community she loved. Her love for the community and humanity involved donation of her organs upon her death and Karen hopes that others will follow her example and become organ donors. Karen is survived by her husband Paul, her daughters, Dani Duby and husband Jason, and Beckie Osterman and husband Greg, her grandchildren: Colin Duby, Connor Duby, Casey Duby, Owen Osterman, and Bodie Osterman; her parents George and Darlene Trahern, brothers Eugene Trahern and wife Marci of Redmond, OR, and Keith Trahern and wife Nancy in Grants Pass, and brother-in-law Claude Bodeving and wife Astrid who reside in Luxembourg. Karen lived life to the fullest and led by example. She was known for her caring for others and for standing up for what she believed in. She loved her pets, farm animals, koi, and the ones in nature that lived on their 40 acres in the woods. Hobbies included camping, traveling nationally and overseas (especially to dog shows), reading and spending time with her family. Her cancer diagnosis led to early retirement which Karen and Paul used to the fullest. While painful, her diseases allowed her to spend the last 3 years of her life making unforgettable memories with children and grandchildren, including trips to Hawaii and Europe. Hull & Hull Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Per her wishes, she will be cremated and returned to her favorite place in the woods.

He worked as a manager at Ray’s Food Place, a reserve deputy with Oregon State Police, and most recently as a manager at Arco. After a divorce, he was engaged to Victoria Buss-Moulder and they had daughter Grace in 2012.

His hobbies included camping, tennis, hiking, sightseeing road trips, and rock/metal music. He was a Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

Survivors include three daughters Renee Cockrum, Lily Cockrum, and Grace Cockrum all of Grants Pass; mother Joy Wenzel of Tarzana, California; and brother Michell Wilde of Vancouver, Washington.

He was preceded in death by his father Mitchell A. Cockrum.

A celebration of life will be at 1:00 p.m., April 28, 2023 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors.

Thelma J. (Poague) Gibson Thelma Jean was born on November 24, 1932 to Aurthur J. and Helen L. (Aebi) Chaffin on the family farm just South of Monmouth, Oregon. She attended schools in that area, with Fall City High being the last school she attended. She passed away peacefully on March 28, 2023 in Grants Pass, Oregon.

Thelma’s mother passed away when she was just 14 years old. She wanted to continue her education and graduate, but by age 16 had no choice but to quit school and support herself.

In 1951 she married Lewis (Louie) E. Poague who passed away in 1980. They had four children, Robert (Bob), Karen, Kenneth (Kenny) and Jennifer (Jenn) in that order. In 1971 the family moved from Reedsport, Oregon to Grants Pass, Oregon. Not long after moving to Grant Pass Thelma started working at nearby Merlin Health Retreat as a Certified Nurse’s Aide (CNA), which inspired her to continue her education and pursue nursing. She first got her GED and then received her nursing degree from Rogue Community College. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Grants Pass area for several years. She always joked that LPN stood for: Lowly Paid Nurse!

In 1983 she married Lloyd D. Mayers who passed away in 1986. Although it was a short marriage, she was so thankful to gain a bonus daughter, Diane.

In 1989 she married Marvin H. Gibson, living with him in Glide, Oregon for 15 years until he passed away. She gained another bonus daughter, Rita, from that marriage. After Marvin’s death she moved back to Grants Pass where she had her first brand new house built in 2004. She really enjoyed picking everything out herself and was so pleased with and proud of her beautiful new home.

When Thelma and Marvin retired, they bought a fifth wheel and began traveling. They were Snowbirds for 13 years, making the trek to the Arizona desert with friends each year. Besides the warm winter weather, day trips to Mexico and perusing Flee Markets were some of the things they enjoyed while there. Thelma especially loved seeing all the beautiful desert flowers bloom. They also spent time at the Oregon coast and three summers in Alaska fishing, enjoying the cooler weather, amazing scenery, wildlife and history.

Thelma enjoyed camping, traveling and socializing. She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed mysteries. She loved cats and playing card games with family and friends. She was known for her cooking and cooked anything Louie or the boys dragged in, often for large numbers of people, never complaining and doing it seemingly effortlessly. She spent many years preserving and canning things grown in the family garden, fresh caught or smoked fish and game that Louis and her sons caught, hunted and cured. Her pantry and freezer were always well stocked. All her children have followed her example and are home canners and preservers.

Thelma was especially proud of her children. She expressed this often with her last time in the week before she passed away. Her daughter’s response, which all her children agree with, was: “You raised us right momma; you did a good job, a very good job.” Her children are all very proud of her too; from the way she raised them to be responsible self-sufficient adults, teaching them valuable skills and lessons, to the way she managed money and taught them by example. She always said: “There’s no income you can’t outspend, so live below you means,” which they all took to heart. After moving back to Grants Pass she volunteered at Fruitdale Elementary School, in Jenn’s first grade class. She was called Grandma Gibson and admired by all. She was a member of Grant Pass Christian Singles, traveled and socialized with her friends and family. She had a group of ladies that often went to lunch, movies and on outings together. She went on many group bus trips with Raindance Tours, car trips with family or friends and even a few cruises. She always joked that she was spending her kids’ inheritance. We would tell her, “Good for you mom! Spend it all; you taught us how to make our own.”

Thelma was pleasant to be around and loved by everyone who knew her. She had a great sense of humor that stayed with her until the end. After her passing, one caregiver commented, “I really miss your mom. She always had something nice to say.” Another said, “Thelma is the nicest person I’ve ever met.” Her kindness, gentle spirit, beautiful smile and the way she lit up when someone came to visit will always be remembered.

Survivors include: Her children Robert (Deneice) Poague of Roseburg, OR; Karen (Dave) Bartels of Eugene, OR; Kenneth (Victoria) Poague and Jennifer (Darrell, “Huck”) Webb both of Grants Pass, OR; two bonus daughters Diane (Mayers) Dahlgren of Grants Pass, OR and Rita Gibson of Roseburg, OR; her brother James A. Chaffin of Hawaii; along with several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents and sister, Shirley Trueax.

Tribute donations can be made to the Red Cross, as she always supported them to show gratitude for their help after the 1964 flood or to the Rogue Valley Humane Society to honor her love for cats.
