Elizabeth "Bette" A. Schmidt - January 05, 1953 - April 24, 2022

Departed: 04/24/2022 (Eau Claire)
Obituary Preview: Elizabeth “Bette” A. Schmidt, whom her loved ones affectionately referred to as “Mama” passed peacefully in her sleep on April 24, 2022 in Eau Claire, WI after months of declining health.
Bette was born on January 5, 1953 in Samuels, KY to James and Alice (Lowery) Vittitoe. Due to the untimely death of her mother, Bette along with her 9 siblings were placed into adoption.  Bette and her brother Tommy were adopted together by Dr. William and Ruth Howard of Lebanon, KY. She resided there until she joined the Army after high school.  During that time she was stationed in Texas where she met her first husband David Sova.  They resided in Beeville, TX until they moved to Medford, WI in 1974, where they took up farming and were blessed with their three children Pamela, Penny and Patrick.
Bette was an avid gardener and she enjoyed canning. She also loved animals, swimming and music and was happiest when she was surrounded by her children and friends.
Bette and David divorced in 1992, and she continued to reside in Medford.  She met her second husband Daniel Schmidt and they were married March 6, 1999. Bette and Daniel loved going camping, having cook outs and playing cards with friends.  They also loved going on Krug Bus Tours, going out to eat and relaxing on a park bench outdoors watching nature. Although they had many interests, they only needed each other’s companionship to have a fulfilling marriage.
Although Bette battled mental illness her entire life, she always worked until her physical and mental health prevented it.  She was a very hard worker, enjoyed her colleagues, and took pride in being productive, involved, and giving her best effort. She was the kind of person that would give you the shirt off her back and ask for nothing in return.  She was never looking for a free handout.
Faith was very important to Bette.  She loved being an active member of the church, and developed lasting friendships with many parishioners. Through her church, she enjoyed giving back to the community through fund raising, bible study and puppet shows.  Her gentle nature was a comfort to be around.  Her laugh could light up a room.
As her health declined, she maintained her optimism and positive attitude, looking forward to getting out and about with friends and family. Those who cared for her will especially miss her as she was a devoted friend, and a true testament of a mother’s love and selflessness. Along with her children and grandchildren, she will be greatly missed by nieces, nephews and friends.  She was truly one of God’s soldiers and a child of the light.
Bette is preceded in death by biological parents James and Alice (Lowery) Vittitoe, adoptive parents, Dr. William and Ruth (Farrar) Howard and brothers William Vittitoe and Thomas Howard.  She is survived by husband Daniel Schmidt, daughters Pam (Ryan Alexander), Penny (Jim Grant) and Son Patrick Sova (Amy Fiengo), grandchildren Ireland and Flynn Alexander and Avery and Tony Grant, brothers James and the late (Sharon) Vittitoe, Steve (Pat) Vittitoe, Jennie and the late Ronald Embry, Gregory Vittitoe, Michael (Janice) Brohm, David Edlind, Mary Ann (Bill) Nelson, Michael Howard, Mary Pat Howard and many nieces and nephews.
A special thanks to Audrey Homer, Brian Bellendorf, Amy Flengo and Tara Parks who offered love care and support during this time.

Archie Tate - February 02, 1947 - April 12, 2022

Departed: 04/12/2022 (Eau Claire)
Obituary Preview: Archie Richard Tate, husband, father, grandfather, poet, woodsman and a champion for students who needed one, died April 12. He was 75.
A memorial service will take place at 11 am on Saturday, April 16, 2022 at Hulke Family Funeral Home.  There will be no visitation on Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service. Friends and family are invited to gather at the Alano Club 12, 2926 Pomona Drive, Eau Claire, WI 54701 immediately following the service until 2 pm on Saturday.
Archie was born to Archie and Lilliath (Peebles) Tate on Feb. 2, 1947, in Corry, Pennsylvania, and came to the upper Midwest to attend Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota. There he played rugby and was still able to earn a political science degree. He spent time in Vista and was half of the locally noted guitar duo of Norman and Archie. He later met and married Cindy Emerson. They raised five children, spending some of the children’s early lives in a woodlands’ cabin he and a friend built. Archie and his current wife, Debbie Foss, later built a house with actual electricity and running water in the same woodlands in Eleva.
Archie made a living working on Mississippi River barges, logging with horses and raising the occasional goat. He later earned a degree in special education from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. As a teacher, Archie was a fierce protector of his reading and other challenged students in Mondovi, Eleva-Strum and Osseo schools.
Archie wrote poetry that spoke of woods, and horses, and dogs and old men and once was a regular reader of his work throughout the Eau Claire area. His poems and stories have appeared in several books, including two published along with the work of members of the Mondovi Writers Group.
His poetry and his love for his children and grandchildren were a few of the cracks in his famously gruff exterior that covered a too-tender heart.
Archie was a runner and a coach for girls and boys sports. His analysis of professional sports was, usually, spot on.
Archie celebrated 35 years of sobriety in March and wishes serenity and wisdom for the innumerable friends he met on that journey.
Archie is survived by his wife, Debbie of Eleva and his former wife, Cindy of Eau Claire. His five children and their families are: son Julian and his wife Jodi Emerson of Eau Claire and their daughters, Hayley of Madison and Emily of Eau Claire; son Chris Emerson and his companion Reiko Shinno of Eau Claire; daughter Maggie and her husband Wesley Faulkner of Eau Claire and their children, Oliver and Violet; son Huckleberry and his wife Laura of Shoreview, Minnesota, and their sons, Leo and Felix; and son Hickory of Eau Claire who, with Rebekah Ullwelling, is raising three children, Mavis, Malcolm and June.
He is also survived by four siblings, John of Corry, Pennsylvania, Katy of St. Cloud, Florida, and Debbie and Donna of Huntingburg, Indiana; his favorite horse, Moses; and two mutts, Mato and Rufus.
We all wish he was still with us.

Departed: 04/02/2022 (Eau Claire)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Donald Blink died peacefully on April 2, 2022 after months of declining health.
Don was born in April 1934 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, the oldest child of Donald and Muriel Blink. His childhood years were spent in Oshkosh, WI. At age four he fell backwards down the stairs resulting in a head wound needing medical attention. He said that at that moment he decided he wanted to be a doctor. Don attended St. Norbert College and was accepted at the University of Wisconsin Madison Medical School where he graduated with both a B.S. and M.D. – practicing family medicine for more than 40 years.
Don married Barbara Zeihen in June 1957. From that marriage Don and Barbara were blessed with five children: Jeffrey, Brian, David, Julie, and Joel.
After an internship at Minneapolis General Hospital, Don served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1963 at Great Lakes Naval Training Base in North Chicago, IL. While in the Navy, Don met Frank Salisbury, a WWI veteran and gun stock maker, who taught Don the art of stock-making, carving and checkering. Through his life Don handcrafted more than a dozen working Kentucky rifles along with many walnut tables and other furniture.
At the completion of Don’s Naval service Don and family moved to Wisconsin Rapids for a year, and then Antigo Wisconsin where he practiced from 1964 to 1975. Don and Barbara divorced in 1975 and Don moved to Eau Claire, joining the Putnam Heights Clinic. Don married Christie Roberts in January 1986. Their son Ben was born in 1987. The Putnam Heights clinic joined Midelfort Clinic, then the Mayo Clinic Health System, where Don practiced until he retired in 1999.
Don lived a full and purposeful life. Don loved the practice of medicine. He delivered more than 1,500 babies, loved the camaraderie with his colleagues, staff, and patients, and the challenge of solving complex problems. Even after his official retirement he provided physician coverage in Urgent Care, and at other MCHS sites until 2007.
Don’s interests extended far beyond medicine. He was an avid hunter, trapshooter (38 years/ Snap-On Tools team), auto mechanic, “lumberjack” and woodworker.  He crafted numerous radio controlled planes and had a lifelong love of aviation. He was a voracious reader and seeker of knowledge – reading more than 1,000 books on his Kindle. In his retirement Don was the scoutmaster of Troop 36 at Grace Lutheran Church from 2001 to 2007 and spent a week at Boy Scout Camp as a leader every summer for more than a decade. He continued to assist with shooting sports at Camp Phillips and served on the Camp Committee long after. As his health declined and in the care of his wife Christie, Don maintained his optimism and positive attitude, looking forward to getting out and about with his friends.  His family and friends will especially miss his love, wisdom, and wit.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, son Joel, daughter Julie, brother-in-law, Donald Krueger, and nephew, Brandon Streb. Ivan W. Ficken - July 26, 1943 - March 22, 2022

Departed: 03/22/2022 (Eau Claire)
Obituary Preview: Ivan William Ficken was born on the family farm, July 26, 1943, at Dorchester, NE. He was the third child born to William and Clara Ficken after his sisters, Delores and Alice. “Two days after my third birthday, my father got out of bed, took a few steps and dropped dead. Apparently, a blood clot reached his brain, probably caused by an injury to his leg caused by one of the horses used to pull farm machinery. The totality of those adverse experiences caused my oldest sister (13 years older than I) to elope to Missouri at age 17.”  Ivan and his mother and sister, Alice moved to Seward around 1948. She then got a job cooking at Concordia College in return for housing which was above the school dining hall.  Then, Ivan said; “my mother used the $5000 life insurance that my father had to buy an old house in Seward, NE for $4500 and look for a job.  Though she had originally wanted to be a teacher, her parents had refused to let her continue school beyond eighth grade, which they considered more than sufficient for someone destined to be a farmer’s wife.  The only job which my mother could get was pressing clothes at a local dry-cleaning shop, which she held for roughly the next 20 years at a level of pay below the federal minimum wage.  I resolved never to take advantage of other people in the manner of making money off other people’s labor, and to never shirk from having the moral courage to openly oppose an employer’s abuse of their employee.” An older attorney who lived next door to Ivan “acted as somewhat substitute father for me, until his death when I was 10 or 11. The reason was that unlike most people who talked down to a kid, Harry talked to me as though I were an adult which impressed me at that age. No doubt that experience influenced my decision to go to law school later.” After high school, Ivan said he went on to get both a liberal arts bachelor’s degree in Econ, Psychology and Math, as well as a bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. “I also spent a semester on a masters in Metallurgical Engineering, but abandoned it to take a job with Texaco as a petroleum engineer.  I earned a total of 4 1/2 college degrees.” “Though I had a draft deferment with Texaco based on working in a critical industry, I voluntarily entered Navy OCS in the summer of 1968 and spent a year and a half on board the USS Catskill (MCS-1), as it changed home port from Long Beach to Sasebo, Japan where it participated in multiple mine exercises with other SEATO countries, as well as acting as a supply ship, oiler and repair ship for coastal mine sweepers doing “Market Time” (checking documentation of small Vietnamese fishing vessels along the Vietnamese coast).  In mid-1970, the ship was destined to return to the US and be scrapped, the Navy’s footprint in the Vietnam War was lightening, which enabled me to get an early out of a conventional three-year obligation.  I got my release from active duty in Japan,1970[1]and spent the following two and half months traveling overland across southern Asia to the top of Europe and back to an US air base in Germany for a free flight back to the US.     [1] Why?  Because it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to get to know the rest of the world in depth, and those opportunities should never be squandered.  All of these experiences contributed to a commitment to trying to help solve as least a few of the world’s problems, including the abject poverty of most of the countries I traveled through as well as viewing the legal profession as the only mean by which at least something could be accomplished in pursuit of that. I returned to Texaco in west Texas to get some funds working, while planning to return to the Univ. of Nebraska law school the following year. I was cut from enrollment the following year. The Univ. of Miami’s Ocean and Coastal law program seemed a logical extension of my new found love of the oceans (I didn’t even know how to swim upon attending Navy OCS in Newport, being the only person in our company who didn’t, and learning how presented the greatest threat to my even being able to graduate), which was the most enjoyable year of law school ever.  I developed enough self confidence in my own research capabilities to realize that I was at least as capable as anyone else in terms of solving a legal problem.” “Upon walking along a street abutting the rear end of a grocer’s (probably one of the ubiquitous Publix grocery stores around Miami or Coral Gables), I saw a couple guys roll up a metal door of a building, walk out and drop a cardboard box into their dumpster.  They returned inside, rolling the metal door back down.  Thinking their behavior to be curious I walked over to see what it was:  a box of peaches, all in perfect, prime shape.  The obvious reason they were being thrown out was simply that they were ripe, i.e., the best possible condition one could hope for. (Given people’s general shopping habits of once per week, grocers as well as customers prefer unripe produce that will keep at home for at least a whole week).  I found that when you don’t have to care, in the traditional sense, about worrying whether your social prestige quotient is above everyone else’s via the usual criteria of most stylish clothes, new car, new house, etc., that drives the consumer’s hedonic treadmill, then life becomes far easier and less worrisome about what others think of you, because you’ve got the probable highest level of self confidence among your peers or whoever.  In short, for the past 46 years, ever since being in Miami, I’ve lived almost exclusively off salvaged food, and am the healthier for it, in terms of usually being able to find a sufficient quantity of key ingredients of a Mediterranean diet for free, that is best for one’s health anyway, and all of it for free.” Ivan also worked as an attorney in Madison, WI for the SBA’s disaster Loan Program between 1978-1981, “I never considered working as a private attorney unless I could afford to do so without charging fees.” After that job was terminated, he said: “I spent the following three years in Madison, Iowa City and Sioux Falls, initially trading futures markets until the losses forced me to abandon it.  From there I moved to Texas in 1983 where for the next three years I continued SBA disaster work.” “My life long objective has always been to try to develop sufficient wealth to be able to finance a strictly pro bono law practice where I’d take only cases which held the potential to correct some serious mis directions that the law might have taken in the past.” Four life constraints:
Never make money off exploiting other people’s labor Never lack the moral courage to report or walk away from an employer’s abusive practices toward employees Never make money of exploiting other people’s ignorance Never charge people money for information that they need or that could help them.
In 2000 Ivan adopted a son from a Romania orphanage with the name, Ciprian Ivanof.  He was the pride of his life. Ivan dedicated his life to teaching and training his son. However, some complications with social service in Washington, DC necessitated a move to Eau Claire where he received some assistance from his sister, Alice and her husband Fred Sauder. Ivan helped Cip get an education at the University of Minnesota and then at the Washington College of Law where he graduated and passed the bar exam in DC.
Ivan’s medical problems were connected to Covid 19 which resulted in an amputation of his big toe on February 22 and that was followed by a blockage of the aorta which caused his death on March 22, 2022.  Ivan lived a total of 78 years, 7 months, and 27 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Delores Haase and Alice Sauder. Those who mourn his death and yet rejoice in his heavenly inheritance include his son Ciprian, his brother-in-law, Fred Sauder, and his 9 nieces and nephews. .

Susan Marie White - February 14, 1948 - March 15, 2022

Departed: 03/15/2022 (Eau Claire)
Obituary Preview: Susan Marie White, age 74, died Tuesday March 15, 2022 at her home in Fall Creek, WI from complications of lymphoma.  Susan's illness was brief and her passing was unexpected.
Susan was born February 14, 1948 to Walter Schumacher and Bernice (Strehlau) Schumacher of Fall Creek, WI.  In 1968, Susan married John White of Clear Lake, WI.  Susan and John raised two children on the multi-generational farm where she grew up.
Susan was a quiet, shy person at heart but always enjoyed visiting with people.  She was naturally lovely and kind.  Susan was unwaveringly dedicated to caring for her family and worked very hard to do so over the years.  Susan provided elder care to her father, uncle, husband, brother, and brother in law.  Many will also remember Susan for her years of service as a rural route mail carrier for the Fall Creek Post Office.
Most of all, Susan enjoyed the great outdoors.  Being a true farm gal, she loved working with animals.  Susan rode horses when she was younger and tended a herd of cattle in her senior years.  Even when her knees bothered her, she still hauled wood and did chores.  Susan's strength and kindness will be dearly missed and we regret that we will not have more time with her in this world.
Surviving Susan are her daughter Mary White, son Stephan White, daughter in law Elizabeth (Hoover) White, and grandson Siegfried White.  Susan was preceded in death by her husband John White, parents Walter and Bernice (Strehlau) Schumacher, sister Mary (Schumacher) Dehnke, and brother John Schumacher.  Susan will be buried next to her husband John at the Clear Lake Cemetery.
A memorial service and meal will be held at the Brackett American Legion, 9150 West Beaver Creek Rd, Fall Creek, WI on Monday, March 28, 2022 from 4pm until 8pm.  All who would like to celebrate Susan's life are invited to attend.
Friends and family may offer condolences at the memorial service or to Susan's home address.  The Hulke Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Eau Claire assisted the family with the arrangements.

Dale Anderson - December 20, 1935 - February 26, 2022

Departed: 02/26/2022 (Eau Claire)
Obituary Preview: Dale Anderson, age 86, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, February 26, surrounded by his family. Dale was born on December 20, 1935, to Harry and Anna Anderson, near Grantsburg, WI. He attended school in Grantsburg and often spoke with fondness of his boyhood years there.
As a youth he loved to ice skate, roller skate, and hang out at his dad’s gas station and auto repair shop, and, with his younger brother John, ‘borrow’ Coca-Colas from the store cooler. In high school, Dale was active in football, basketball, and baseball, though by his own admission, it was not his forte. His real passion was music—he sang tenor in the choir, played the baritone horn in band, and learned to play the accordion. He, John, and two friends formed a vocal/instrumental quartet that performed in many area churches.
Dale’s love for music also changed his life in a way he didn’t expect when he caught the eye of Arleth Johnson as the quartet performed at an outdoor worship service. Arleth remembers seeing him on stage and saying to herself, ‘I want to get to know him!’ And she did—they began dating and were married on June 15, 1957, and would have soon celebrated 65 years! Between 1961 to 1970, Dale and Arleth had four sons, Kendal, Keith, Nathan, and Noland.
Dale attended UW-Superior and graduated from Wheaton College in 1959, earning his B.A. in Music Education. Shortly thereafter, Dale was hired as the Band Director at Lincoln Junior High in Duluth, MN. In 1970, Dale earned an M.A. in Counseling and moved to Eau Claire, WI, to become the Placement Director for the Chippewa Valley Technical College, which included proctoring GED testing for jail inmates.
Dale enjoyed hunting for cars, cheering for the Packers, remodeling the family cabin, and was continually coming up with new ideas, especially for businesses, a passion he passed along to all four sons. A short list of ventures he pursued: creating a fishpond, breeding Siberian Huskies, raising rabbits, growing cucumbers for pickles, selling and installing pond aerators, a miniature golf course, and farming earthworms (!) His most successful enterprise was owning and operating multi-family homes, something he began in his 20s and continued into his final days.
Dale loved the fact that his jobs allowed him the time to be with his family. He cheered us on at baseball and basketball games, wrestling matches, golf tournaments, band and choir concerts, and took us on many family vacations. The boys remember hiking in the Rockies, boating on Lake Altoona, kayaking on the river, camping all over the country in the family camper van, and sitting around the fire roasting marshmallows.
Above all else, though, Dale was a follower of Jesus, and pursued God’s Kingdom in everything he did. At an early age he realized that if Jesus had indeed risen from the dead, he could do what he claimed he could—reconcile us to God and give us life, both now and after this life.
Toward that end, Dale volunteered as church choir director, led Bible studies and small group gatherings, taught Sunday School, brought kids to AWANA, supported missionaries around the world, and with Arleth, founded ‘Praise,’ a high school church singing group, and mentored engaged couples in preparation for marriage. We often sang together as a family in worship services and church events. He also served on the board of The Wilderness Fellowship, a spiritual retreat center near Grantsburg, for 30 years. His daily practice was to begin each day reading scripture with Arleth and praying for others, especially that they would know and experience the presence and power of Jesus.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers George (Blanche) and Jerome (Marilyn). He is survived by his wife, Arleth; sons Kendal (Sherry), Keith, Nathan (Julie), and Noland (Michiko); seven grandchildren, Katie (Sean) McCormick, Zach Anderson, Anders (Rebekah) Colbrook, Chase Anderson, Eliya Anderson, Logan Anderson, and Lauren Anderson; brother John (Pat); nieces, nephews, and other relatives. A celebration of Life Service will take place at 3 pm on Sunday, March 6, 2022 at Valleybrook Church, 412 S Barstow St, Eau Claire, WI 54701.  Visitation will take place at the church on Sunday from 1:30 pm until the time of service.  Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery in Grantsburg, WI.
