He was a man of deep faith, kindness, and an unwavering spirit of community service.
Joe's life was a testament to his strong work ethic and his commitment to his family. Growing up on a farm, experiencing the evolution of farming from the horse-drawn era to modern times. He provided for his family through various trades, including farming, carpentry, plumbing, and electric work. In 1959, Joe began a partnership with Albert Lauck to form Lauck & Ludwig Plumbing & Heating in Elma, later becoming the sole proprietor of Ludwig Plumbing, Heating & Electric until his retirement in 1984.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma with Rev. Nick Radloff celebrating the Mass. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Elma.
Friends may greet the family from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Hugeback - Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in Elma where there will be a 7:00 p.m. scripture service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Wednesday.
Merle Lester Pitz, known affectionately as Merle to his friends and loved ones, passed away on April 25, 2024, at the age of 72, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on October 4, 1951, in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Dennis and Phyllis (Marvin) Pitz. Merle was a man whose laughter and industrious spirit filled the lives of those around him with joy and inspiration.
Merle's early years took his journey through the halls of Cresco High School, where he graduated in 1970. Fate intervened one evening when he stopped for a cocktail and met the love of his life, Patricia Heying, which he commonly referred to as “Poopsie”. The couple married at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma on June 1, 1974. Their loving union blessed them with three wonderful children: David, Jennifer, and Ryan. The Pitz family initially made their home on a farm south of Elma and later moved into town in 1978, embracing the charm and camaraderie of small-town life.
Merle dedicated his professional life to the road as a truck driver. He began his career with Croell Redi-Mix, transporting cement powder throughout the Midwest. His passion for the open road led him to become an owner/operator of his own truck, a role he cherished for 38 years. His truck was a reflection of his pride and meticulous nature, and he expected the same level of respect for it from those who used it.
In his youth, Merle had a wild streak, channeling his energy into tinkering, racing, and occasionally wrecking anything with an engine. However, as he matured, his interests evolved into more serene activities such as hunting, fishing, golfing, and camping with his family. He was a man who could glide across the dance floor, enjoy the melodies of music, and engage in spirited card games with family and friends.
Merle's playful spirit never waned. He remained a child at heart, delighting in being silly with his grandchildren and executing pranks with the skill of a seasoned trickster. His hands were rarely idle, and he was known for his exceptional ability to fix nearly anything. The Pitz residence was recognizable by the open garage doors, revealing Merle's latest project. His philosophy was one of constant motion, always needing to be busy with something.
Above all, Merle valued family. It was his compass, his unwavering priority. He was the one his family called upon in times of need, and without hesitation, he would be there, offering his support, guidance, and the warmth of his presence. Family was his everything, and he ensured that they knew it through his actions and commitment.
To describe Merle is to speak of a man who was incredibly handy, spirited, and funny. His legacy is etched in the memories of those who knew him—memories of laughter, shared adventures, and countless acts of kindness. Merle's passing leaves a void in the community of Elma and in the hearts of his beloved family and friends.

Gerry's talents extended well beyond the fields. She was a skilled seamstress, often seen sewing and mending clothes for her children and neighbors. Her culinary prowess was legendary; Gerry could always be counted on to have a delicious four-course meal waiting for her family and friends. As her children grew older, Gerry found a new way to express her innate desire to care for others. She became a nurse's aide at the Colonial Manor in Elma, where for about 30 years, she was a valued employee known for her compassionate nature. Her dedication to helping others also extended to her and Slim's role as custodians at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma, where they served for many years, generously offering their time and talents to the parish.
Gerry's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. A lifetime member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma and a longtime member of the Rosary Society, she lived her faith every day, inspiring those around her to do the same. Gerry's faith-filled life was a testament to her belief in kindness, service, and community.
Those who knew Gerry would speak of her selfless nature. She was the kind of person who always put others before herself, and who found the greatest joy in the happiness and well-being of those she loved. Her presence was a comforting constant in the lives of her family, and her absence will be deeply felt. Her garden was her pride, and many people stopped to chat with her ended up enjoying from her bountiful harvest. Her reward was how much she could give to help others. The family would like to thank the staff of Colonial Manor & Afton Oaks for her wonderful care.
Gerry is survived by her children, Jean (Vern) Voves of Elma, IA, Kay Lawrence of Monticello, IA, Joanne (Rick) Freidhof of Cresco, IA, Pat (Merle) Pitz of Elma, IA, John (Donna) Heying of Elkader, IA, Rick (Ann) Heying of Alta Vista, IA, Roger (Rose) Heying of Alta Vista, IA, Andy Heying of Webster City, IA, Becky (Keith) Buckridge of Edgerton, MN, and son-in-law, Lavern McGrane of Elma, IA; 30 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Al (Donna) Biwer of Elma, IA; brother-in-law, Joe Glaser of New Hampton, IA; sister-in-law, Jackie Biwer of Surprise, AZ; close friend, Janice Kobliska of Elma, IA; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Monica Rosella Marvin, a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2023, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City, IA. Born on August 31, 1929, in rural Chickasaw County, IA, the daughter of Theodore and Margaret (Brehm) Geerts. Monica lived a life characterized by faith, thoughtfulness, and selfless devotion to her family and community.
Monica's early life was spent in the modest countryside of Chickasaw County, where she attended country school and graduated from Alta Vista High School in 1947. It was during these formative years that she met Virgil Marvin, a boy from across the creek who would later become her loving husband. They were married on October 25, 1951, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Alta Vista, and were blessed with seven wonderful children.
Monica and Virgil made their first home south of Alta Vista, where they lived without the modern convenience of running water. But Monica's hard work and determination transformed this humble start into a warm and loving home. In 1968, the family moved into Alta Vista, where Monica nurtured a large garden, canned, cooked, baked and cared for her family. Her remarkable baking skills became well known; particularly her homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, pies, and noodles. Monica's Christmas candy, made with love for family and friends, was a cherished annual treat.
Monica was also known for her vibrant spirit and zest for life. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, square dancing, playing cards, embarking on wagon trips and spending time with her family and friends. She looked forward to the arrival of the daily newspaper and another crossword puzzle to solve - and yes, she completed them with a pen. A devoted fan of Jeopardy, she made sure to tune in every day at 4:00 p.m., and her family and friends quickly learned to respect the guarded timeslot.
Monica's faith played a central role in her life. A devoted Catholic, she prayed the Rosary regularly and attended Mass faithfully until her mobility kept her from doing so. Her faith-filled life was a testament to her deep spiritual convictions and served as an encouragement to others.
Monica is survived by her children, Darlene Winter of Bethany, MO, Dennis (Colleen) Marvin of Alta Vista, IA, Raymond (Dorothy) Marvin of Ankeny, IA, Beverly (Michael) Spangler of Lakeville, MN, Paula (Jimmy) Baker of Charles City, IA, Bryan (Ann Bettesworth) Marvin of Charles City, IA; son-in-law, James Alverson  of Brunswick, MO; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Coletta Geerts of New Hampton, IA, Delores Welch of Kohler, WI, and Mary Knuston of Elma, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virgil in 2013; daughter, Carol Alverson; brothers, Paul (Helen) Geerts, Louis (Katherine) Geerts, Andrew (Monica) Geerts, Elmer (Joann) Geerts, Daniel Geerts; sisters, Ruth (Everest) Kruth, Mabel Geerts.
Monica will be remembered as a woman of great strength, resilience, and love. She was a beacon of faith, a thoughtful friend, and a selfless mother.
