Raymond F. McEnroe - January 18, 1951 - March 14, 2024

Departed: 03/14/2024 (DOVER PLAINS)
Obituary Preview: Raymond F. McEnroe, III, 73, a lifelong resident of Millerton, NY, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY, alongside his immediate family members. Mr. McEnroe was a fourth generation dairy farmer who owned and operated McEnroe Organic Farm in Millerton, NY.
Born on January 18, 1951 in Sharon, CT, he was the son of the late Raymond F. McEnroe, Jr. and Barbara (Pitcher) McEnroe. Mr. McEnroe was a graduate of Webutuck Central Schools and later received an Associate’s Degree from SUNY Cobleskill. On June 2, 1973 in Oxford, NY, he married Sharon Noetzel who survives at home.
Ray’s lifelong farming passion started in the late 1950’s with a purchase of a registered 4-H Holstein calf, the first on his home farm. This first purchase catapulted him to being one of the top domestic and international cattle marketers in the 1970’s and 80’s which brought him from coast to coast making deals and meeting people along the way. His love of storytelling would bring his five boys around the kitchen table for hours listening word for word of his travels and thought process.
In the late 1980’s, when dairy farming was at its peak, his innovative mind, large risk-taking ability and desire to grow one of the best-tasting tomatoes lead him to move away from dairy farming and begin the lesser-known commodity of organic farming. Ray had a keen sense of farming practices and is considered a pioneer of organic farming. With support of his family, he grew the farm from a single card table selling sweet corn on the side of the road to one of the largest and most diverse organic farms in the state.
For 35 years Ray and his wife, Sharon, have enjoyed traveling to the island of St. Maarten, which have led to many new friends and extended family from across the globe. In his final years he became a resident of the island and enjoyed his recently renovated garden.
Mr. McEnroe was a well-respected leader and served on numerous boards and committees throughout his life. He was a founding member of Hudson Valley Fresh and former member of the Town of North East Town Board. He was a member of the NY Holstein Club, the Dutchess County Fair Board, Millerton Agway Co-Op Board and St. Maarten Yacht Club.
In addition to his loving wife, Mr. McEnroe is survived by five sons, Sean R. McEnroe and his wife, Milena, of Denver, CO, Erich McEnroe and his wife, Halina, of Amenia, Ryan T. McEnroe and his wife, Jennilyn of Odenton, MD, Kyle McEnroe and his wife, Karissa, of Charlotte, NC and Wade McEnroe and his fiancée, Rebecca, of Millerton, NY. He is also survived by a brother, Timothy McEnroe of Millbrook. NY; two sisters, Lee McEnroe of Millbrook, NY and Patricia Letterio and her husband, James, of Beacon, NY and ten grandchildren: Martina, Donovan, Maxium, Daniel, Jason, Adeline, Cora, Greta, Bennett and Pepper.

Albert L. Tompkins - September 14, 1973 - February 20, 2024

Departed: 02/20/2024 (DOVER PLAINS)
Obituary Preview: Albert Tompkins, 50, of Millerton, NY passed away unexpectedly February 20, 2024 due to surgical complications stemming from a prior accident. Born and raised in Dover Plains, the youngest son of Mary Ann and the late William Tompkins, Albert was a treasured member of an extended fabric of family and friends who will all remember him fondly and miss him dearly.
After attending Dover schools, Albert was employed for nearly 32 years by the Millbrook Central School District as a well-respected senior custodian who poured his heart and talents into his work. Not only did he bring a fastidious eye to the presentation of the facilities, but he kept a caring and compassionate eye out for the faculty and students there, as well. His work brought him great satisfaction and initiated many long-lasting relationships as evidenced by the smiles and warm greetings he encountered from former students, parents, and staff wherever he went.
Albert made a living at MCSD, but he made a life being an amazing father to his son and sidekick, Billy Tompkins. Billy was Albert’s greatest pride and joy. He put everything he had into single-handedly raising him to be the thoughtful and capable young man that he is today; the depth of that love and commitment was apparent to all who knew him. In addition to Billy, Albert was a fantastic stepfather who adored Ashleigh Hagadorn, Rylee Stephenson, and Haleigh (Josh) Thornton along with their daughter Parker, as if they were his own. They, too, brought Albert great pleasure and pride, and serve as testament to his unwavering devotion to being the best dad he could be.
Known for his quick sense of humor, easy smile, and laid-back demeanor, Albert could often be found cheering on the Dallas Cowboys or Brad Keselowski as he rounded the NASCAR turns, with the classic country music he loved playing in the background. Always a familiar face at family gatherings, Albert was known to take loving jabs at his siblings, then smirk when they took it to heart. Everyone knew Albert’s love and loyalty were pure and true, despite his determination to be a lifelong jokester famed for his sarcasm. In keeping with the kindness that Albert practiced in the world, organ donation was the last gesture of his generosity, selflessness, and desire to be a beacon of light in times of hardship. These traits were undoubtedly instilled by his parents, and he carried them out honorably through his actions in life.
Albert was a cherished father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. In addition to his mother and children, Albert will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered by his siblings : Sherry Valyou (Donald), Richard Blevins (Kathy), Michelle Ostavitz (Joseph), Mary Allen (Kevin), nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, and friends as he joins his father, William, and sisters Angela Brazee, Marie Blevins, and Elizabeth Pearl Tompkins, who predeceased him. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service details, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable accomplishments, military service, or charitable work.

Who writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary. The writer should aim to capture the essence and personality of the deceased in a concise and respectful manner.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and length of the piece. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to craft a well-written obituary that accurately reflects the life and legacy of the deceased.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

What is the difference between a death notice and an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement that simply states the fact of someone's death, often without providing much additional information. An obituary, on the other hand, is a more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper varies depending on the publication. You can usually find submission guidelines on the newspaper's website or by contacting their obituary department directly.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary, such as Legacy.com, Tributes.com, or FuneralHome.com. These websites often provide templates and guidance to help you create and share your tribute.

How long will my online obituary remain available?

The duration for which an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some sites may keep the obituary active for a few weeks or months, while others may maintain it permanently as part of their archives.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes. If you've published an online obituary, you may be able to edit or update it through the platform's editing tools. For print newspapers, changes may be more difficult to make once the obituary has gone to press.

What is a living obituary?

A living obituary is a self-written tribute that celebrates a person's life while they are still alive. This unique approach allows individuals to reflect on their own accomplishments and experiences, providing a meaningful way to share their story with loved ones.

Can I write my own obituary?

Absolutely! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise that helps you reflect on your life's journey. It also ensures that your story is told in your own words, rather than relying on others to summarize your life after you're gone.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search for old obituaries through online archives like Newspapers.com or GenealogyBank.com. Local libraries and genealogical societies may also maintain collections of historical newspapers and obituaries.

Can I use an obituary as a eulogy?

A well-written obituary can serve as a good starting point for crafting a eulogy. However, keep in mind that an obituary is typically shorter and more formal than a eulogy, which is often more personal and anecdotal.

What is the purpose of an obituary in estate planning?

In estate planning, an obituary can serve as proof of death for legal purposes. It may be required when settling estates, claiming life insurance benefits, or handling other administrative tasks related to the deceased person's affairs.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's okay to inject some humor or personality into the tribute. This can help celebrate the deceased person's spirit and make the reading experience more enjoyable for those who knew them.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you discover errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform where it was posted. They may be able to correct the mistake or issue a retraction if necessary.

Can I republish an existing obituary from another source?

You should always obtain permission from the original author or publisher before republishing an existing obituary. Be sure to give proper credit and acknowledge the source material to avoid any potential copyright issues.

What is the role of social media in sharing an obituary?

Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have become popular channels for sharing news of a loved one's passing. You can post a link to the online obituary or share key details with your network to spread the word quickly.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Choose selections that resonate with the deceased person's values or interests for added significance.

How do I ensure my online obituary remains accessible over time?

To ensure long-term accessibility, consider creating a permanent online memorial through a reputable platform or website. This will help guarantee that your loved one's tribute remains available for years to come.

What are some common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

Can I include charitable donations information in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers. This allows friends and acquaintances to make a meaningful contribution in memory of their loved one.

How do I balance honesty with tact when writing an obitary?
