Nancy A. Rusch - November 08, 1950 - April 17, 2022

Departed: 04/17/2022 (Sturgeon Bay)
Obituary Preview: Nancy A. (Rockwell) Rusch, 71 years, of Green Bay, formerly of Manitowoc and Sturgeon Bay, passed away peacefully at home in Howard, on Sunday, April 17, 2022.
Nancy was born November 8, 1950 in Sturgeon Bay, the daughter of the late Leo and Doraine “Dode” (Braley) Rockwell. She graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1969. Nancy was a talented bar tender in Sturgeon Bay and in Manitowoc for many years who enjoyed the social aspect of that trade, well-armed with a quick wit and unique sense of humor known to be the Rockwell’s. As alcohol could be a hazard of that trade, Nancy combatted that illness and was proud to have been 28 years sober and a member of AA. In true Nancy style and humor, she said 28 years was good, but “I never got a cake”. Christ would become the center of her life and as a Christian even though her health began to fail, she knew she was going home to heaven. With her faith, it was only fitting God called her home on Resurrection Sunday.
It was love at first sight as David was captivated by, as he describe, her “Sophia Loren” eyes during a chance meeting. And on November 2, 1991, she married David Dean Rusch in Las Vegas. They were members of Hope Community Church in Manitowoc. Nancy was a strong-willed woman, fiercely loyal and loving to her children and family, never leaving doubt about where she stood on something or how she felt. She loved and missed her mom and dad after they passed. Both as a young child with her parents and brothers, whom she loved, and as an adult with her husband, Nancy loved camping and traveling. Nancy’s grandchildren, children and husband were her world. Her best friends meant everything to her and their children were treated like her own. Nancy loved all of her “brats”. She loved watching Hallmark movies, traveling, especially to Branson, MO, and Savannah, GA.
Survivors include her husband, David; two children, Paulette Madden of Green Bay, Misty (and favorite son-in-law, Michael) Mrotek of Green Bay; daughter-in-law, Sarah Matthews of Manitowoc; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Cassandra, Bryanna, Blaine, Willow, Aspen, Caleb, Christian, Lily, Athena; Brooke, Christina, Hope, Cheyenne, Daniel Jr., Hazyl, Vylet; David, Randal, Johnathan, and Benjamin; brother, Joseph “Joe” (Linda) Rockwell of Sturgeon Bay; three sisters-in-law, Connie Rockwell, Denise (Rick) Krowiorz, Susan (Steve) Nass; many dear nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death were her parents, Leo and Dode Rockwell; husband, Francis “Frank” Copus; son, Daniel Matthews Sr., grandson, Cody Sprang (14 yrs); and brother, Roger; in-laws, Verlin and Ethel Rusch; brother-in-law, Steven Rusch; infant sister-in-law, Annette Rusch.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 25, 2022 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay with Pastor Jed Manders of Hope Community Church in Manitowoc.
Family and friends may visit with the Nancy’s family from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Huehns Funeral Home and on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m.

Eugene Victor Remy - November 18, 1937 - April 12, 2022

Departed: 04/12/2022 (Sturgeon Bay)
Obituary Preview: Eugene “Gene” Victor Remy, 84, of Nasewaupee, passed away Tuesday evening, April 12, 2022.
He was born on November 18, 1937, the son of the late Ronald Carlyle Remy and Ann Irene (Peterson) Remy. Gene grew up attending Hainesville School (primary school) and graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1956. Upon graduation, he continued his education at a trade school in Green Bay where he studied to be an electrician.  It was during this time he enlisted in the Naval Reserves (1955) and was active until 1961.
Gene was an entrepreneur from an early age—catching and selling minnows at his parents’ resort and even selling manufactured housing during his lunch breaks in high school. Hence, the start of Remy’s Homes began when he was a teenager. What began as a business venture led him to the realization of his true passion and life’s work: to provide affordable housing for families. He strongly believed that everyone should have a place to call their own.
On December 19, 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia (Pat) Ann Pinney who was also a member at the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church. He and Pat were blessed with over 59 years of marriage and three children. She preceded Gene in death on February 28, 2019.
During their years together, Gene and Pat owned and operated Remy's Homes, Inc., Thunderhill Estates, LLC, and Gitche Gumee Resort, LLC. They continued the hundred-year Remy family business tradition in Sturgeon Bay, that started in 1919 with a grocery store on the west side of Sturgeon Bay (Sawyer) opened by Gene's grandfather, Jules.
As a devoted member of the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church, he was on the Board of Trustees and other committees for many years and oversaw projects such as the installation of the church elevator for handicapped members of the congregation.
Gene was heavily involved in the Wisconsin Manufactured Housing Association/Wisconsin Housing Alliance, including serving on their Board of Directors on numerous occasions, and in 2001 earned their highest honor, the Elmer Fry Award. He was also a founding member of the Sturgeon Bay Rotary Club Breakfast, where he was twice honored to receive Rotary’s highest accolade, the Paul Harris Award.
Gene’s hobbies included his love for antique automobiles, tractors, and other mechanical equipment. He loved water sports, including boating, sailing, and waterskiing (barefoot and slalom). In fact, in his younger years he was considered a daredevil trickster skier; his favorite stunt was to stand on the top of a six-foot step ladder, on a wooden saucer, while being pulled by a boat at high speeds. His winter sports included downhill skiing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. Gene also was an avid Packer fan, and longtime season ticket holder who memorably attended the famous “Ice Bowl” game in 1967.
Gene and Pat had a great love for the creative and performing arts; together, they generously supported Peninsula Players, American Folklore Theatre, and others. They also traveled extensively to view and appreciate other parts of the world, which included many national parks.
As much as Gene loved to travel, his favorite views remained those by the shores of Gitche Gumee. Gene loved Door County and happily participated in many efforts to keep it beautiful, including planting thousands of trees and contributing to conservation projects. Over the years, Gene was on the Board of Directors of the Friends of Door County Parks as well as the Door County Historical Society.
Gene will be remembered for his generous spirit; he was known for showing up and being willing to lend a hand. He loved to tell stories and connect with people—and as a result, he made friends everywhere he went. His warm smile and joyous laugh will be missed by all who knew him.
Gene and Pat have three children and their families: Dr. Jeannine Remy, of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, Judith (Joseph) Hilgers of Gordon, WI, Joseph (Randy Armijo) Remy of Silver Spring, MD. They also have five grandchildren: Drew (Abbie) Hilgers, Sean (Maggi) Hilgers, Brenna Hilgers, Seth Remy, and Shea Remy; and a great-grandchild, Mackenna Hilgers. Other family members include sister-in-law, Julie (John Propsom) Pinney, and her three children: Dr. Tanner (Claire) Pinney, Dr. Ben (Amy) Pinney, and Burke Pinney; niece, Janelle Peotter (Dr. Eric Perlman), and nephew, Ben (Cheryl) Peotter; and brother-in-law, Thomas (Myra) Pinney, Jr. and their children: Cheryl (George, deceased) Pinney-Leu, and Geoff (Sonja) Pinney.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife; siblings-in-law, George Pinney and Joyce "Pooky" Peotter; niece, Majel Pinney-Henrickson; and other relatives.
His life will be honored with a funeral service held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church with Rev. Reeder Herrick officiating. The funeral service will be recorded (non-live) and eventually shared on the “Huehns Funeral Home, Inc. & Door Crematory LLC” Facebook page (www.facebook.com/HuehnsFuneralHome).
Gene will be laid to rest in Bayside Cemetery, beside his wife, Pat.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2022 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay and will continue at Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church on Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Memorials may be given in Gene's name for Friends of the Door County Park System and/or Peninsula Players. "Our family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staffs of Door County Medical Center and Unity Hospice for the kind and compassionate care given to our father."
Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Gene may be shared with his family through his tribute page at www.huehnsfuneralhome.com.

Richard "Rick" C. Stram - June 03, 1955 - March 21, 2022

Departed: 03/21/2022 (Sturgeon Bay)
Obituary Preview: Rick C. Stram, age 66, of Sturgeon Bay, formerly of Manistique, MI, passed away at his home on Monday, March 21, 2022.
He was born June 3, 1955, in Sturgeon Bay to the late Matthew and Adeline (Lickman) Stram. Rick graduated from Manistique High School in 1973 and went on to receive his degree in accounting from Marquette University. On May 28, 1977, he married Sally Brandstrom in Manistique.
Following his retirement from Hiawatha Behavioral Health, he and his wife relocated to Sturgeon Bay. Having vacationed there for over 40 years, it was finally time to call Door County home. Rick had a love for water and all that it entailed-- freighters, lighthouses and boating. Each year he looked forward to watching the fleet of freighters lay up for the winter and then set sail in the spring. He was fortunate enough to have traveled on a few trips on the freighters.
When he wasn’t out on the water boating with his family, he could be found down at the Stone Quarry enjoying the sunsets while reading about the history and ships of the Great Lakes. Rick maintained a positive outlook on life, even as his health deteriorated. He was grateful for each and every moment, cherishing the time spent with family and friends.

He was welcomed into Heaven by his father, Howard C. Barr; mother, Irene M. Barr (Schultz); father-in-law, Karl H. Hoisington; mother-in-law, Helen E. Hoisington (Green); brother, Donald C. Barr; granddaughter, Natalie V. Corpus; brothers-in-law, Donald M. Fritz and Charles R. Palmer; sisters-in-law Rose Mary Teresa (Rodriguez) Hoisington and Cynthia J. (Davis) Hoisington; niece, Samantha R. McMullen; and best buddy, Jake, who was indeed a good boy.
Jerry graduated from West Allis Central High School in 1959, where he was a proud baritone in the a cappella school choir, often performing in double quartets. He met the love of his life Georgia Gail Hoisington in 1953 and the two were married on December 2, 1961. After graduation, Jerry served his apprenticeship and became a Journeyman Machinist at Allis Chalmers. He had a brilliant mind with an entrepreneurial spirit and quickly became a master mechanic. He also had a wealth of experience in tool and die making and as a machinist.
Motivated by the love of Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, Jerry joined New Tribes Missions in 1967 with his wife, Georgia, and two, soon to be three, children at the time. There, he was a student of the Lord extensively studying the bible and preparing for a life of missionary work. Though the family never ventured out into the world as missionaries, God had other plans, and Jerry was a ready and willing spiritual mentor throughout his life. He is remembered as a born-again Christian and an active member of his church community.
Jerry was an incredibly hard worker and landed his dream job as a faculty member at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) in the Diesel Engine and Heavy Equipment program in 1984. During his 19-year tenure at NWTC, he spent his well-deserved summers off with family and focused on his many hobbies – whether that be racing the vintage racecar he built, tinkering with his sailboat, or loading his own ammunition for his gun collection. In retirement, he also enjoyed shooting the cannon during Civil War Reenactments.
Jerry built a life with Georgia and his family at the center. His love for his family was demonstrated through acts of service to them – whether that be car and home repairs, babysitting his beloved grandchildren, teaching Sunday school, building Pinewood Derby cars and real racecars for that matter. Whatever his adoring family needed, he was always there. Jerry refused to grow up and whenever he was around, there were sure to be many laughs and shenanigans. Jerry also had a serious side. He was a great listener and genuinely made those he loved feel that they were not alone in this walk through life. He was always learning and evolving to become the best person he could be.

David J. Gerhart - February 26, 1960 - March 03, 2022

Departed: 03/03/2022 (Sturgeon Bay)
Obituary Preview: Our beloved David J. Gerhart passed away peacefully at home March 3, 2022, following a long, hard-fought, and extremely private battle with cancer. He was born on February 26, 1960 in Algoma, son of the late Peter A. Gerhart and Sharon A. (Churches) (Gerhart) Erwin and stepson of Marshall “Bobby” Erwin.
David grew up in Little Harbor, in a very loving family with a strong Great Lakes maritime history and developed early on a lifelong love of the Great Lakes freighters, sunsets on the water, and everything nautical. He was very proud to have spent many summers captaining “The Major” for the Diebel family and to traverse his beloved Lake Michigan and surrounding waters and liked nothing better than to hop into his own boat and cruise after work and on weekends.
David was a very creative person who was able to fix, solve, adapt, imagine, and create anything, simply using his imagination and parts and scraps he had collected.  He was an incredible model car and boat builder. He designed and built a large state-of-the-art Carrera slot car track, at which he enjoyed many Saturdays racing with his dear friends, Bill and Ed, and brother, Rick. Collecting vintage toys, cars, and trucks was a favorite hobby, and he took great joy repurposing them into creative and useful things around the house. He also loved finding and collecting toys and glassware that he remembered being stocked at his grandparents’ Gerhart Hardware Store in Algoma, a place that held very special memories for him.
David married the love of his life, Cindy LaCrosse, on July 6, 2013 at their home in Little Harbor, gaining two stepsons, a daughter-in-law, and a beloved granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, Cindy; stepson, Levon (Breann) LaCrosse and their daughter, Hadley, of Algoma, and stepson, Tyler LaCrosse of Sturgeon Bay. He is also survived by his brothers, Rick (Lisa) Gerhart of Sturgeon Bay and Derick “Bugsy” (Maitri) Erwin of Houston, TX; brothers-in-law, Mike (Janis) Piety of Shelly, ID, Steve (Sue) Harding of Littleton, CO, Sarah (late Jon) Harding, Bloomington, MN, and David (Jennifer) Harding of Alameda, CA; and mother-in-law, Mary Ann Harding of Sturgeon Bay. David is further survived by his aunts, Candy (Al) Thornton of Casco and Dolly (Bob) Hafeman of Algoma, and their families and extended families; and close friends, Leslie (Rick) Diebel Murray, Johnny Diebel, and Johnny (Shelly) Dugan.
David’s journey was extremely personal, and to honor his wishes, there will be no funeral. A celebration of David’s lift will be held this summer in Little Harbor. Memorials may be given in his name to Door Cancer, Inc., St. Jude’s Hospital, or Shriners Hospital.
A special heartfelt thanks to Green Bay Oncology and Unity Hospice, especially Dr. Jaslowski, Eric Danihel PA, Heather RN, and all the nurses who provided such caring and compassionate care; Chaplain Mark, Jennie, and Door County Medical Center for their support of Cindy to be able to stay home to care for her husband; David’s race crew and dear friends/family, Bill (Julie) Karnopp and Ed Anschutz, and brothers, Rick and Bugsy: hold dear how much he loved you and cherished your friendship and gift of time. You were truly the wind beneath his wings on this journey.
