George Brooks Wrightnour - October 09, 1938 - December 11, 2021

Departed: 12/11/2021 (Scranton)
Obituary Preview: George Brooks Wrightnour died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021, at his home on Baylor's Lake in Benton Twp. His family was with him at the time. He was born in Scranton on Oct. 9, 1938, the son of George Sheddy Wrightnour and Eleanor McCleary. He lived on Kingsbury Road in the Green Ridge section of Scranton and summered at Lake Waynewood. In 1954, his family moved to Baylor's Lake, which remained his home until his passing.
Brooks was a kind, honest and gentle man who deeply loved his family, his friends, the outdoors and his golden retrievers. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janet Conathan Wrightnour (formerly of Duxbury, Mass.). He was a proud father to two sons, Bay (Megan Neal) of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Rob, of Nicholson. He was a devoted "Pop" to grandsons, Brooks and Lance. He also leaves his sister, Virginia Russell (David); sister-in-law, Kathy Reardon (Jack); and his nieces and nephews, Katie and Benjamin Russell and Janet and Tiger Reardon. He is predeceased by his beloved aunt, Betty Houck.
Brooks was educated at Central High School and subsequently attended Deerfield Academy where he graduated in 1956. He then attended Dartmouth College, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma, Casque and Gauntlet, and rowed for the crew team. He was awarded the Jaffe Prize for Excellence in Art in 1960. After graduating from Dartmouth, he attended Naval Officers Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, graduating with the rank of ensign.
In 1962, Brooks became the senior trainee of Basic Underwater Demolition School ("BUDS")'s Training Class 29, which began with 450 enlisted men and 85 officers. Upon graduation in December 1962, only 34 enlisted men and seven officers (the magnificent "Mag 7") remained. Brooks did a tour with SEAL Team 12, and then became an instructor at BUDS in Coronado, Calif., where he trained and mentored future SEALs who would be deployed to Vietnam.
In 1965, Brooks left the Navy to attend the Tuck School at Dartmouth College, graduating in 1967 with an MBA. That year, his father died and Brooks returned to Scranton to assist his mother and to take ownership of Wrightnour's Inc., the family tire and auto business, which he ran for the next 40 years. Brooks also returned to the Navy and served as an officer in Naval Reserve Special Warfare units, retiring after 26 years of service with the rank of commander.
Brooks loved the outdoors and cherished his time cutting wood with his son, Rob. Befitting the "frogman" that he was, he enjoyed swimming, whether in the Pacific, the Caribbean, Duxbury Bay or Baylor's Lake. He also loved to spend time with close friends David Gibson and Will Chamberlin biking the blue highways of Pennsylvania, and cross country skiing, and canoeing and backpacking with Janet, Bay and Rob.
Brooks was a loyal friend who maintained friendships from every stage of his life, and his Baylor's Lake home was always open to his friends. His dear friends, Don Merry and Glenn DeMallie spent every New Year's and Fourth of July since 1972 at Baylor's Lake with Brooks and Janet. The men with whom he served in the Navy, including the Mag 7 and many he met in following years, including Lance Mann, John Gulick and Tom Jerussi, were also frequent guests. Brooks loved to travel, taking active and adventurous trips around the world with his friends and family, including visits to close friend Craig Fellin's Big Hole Lodge in Wise River, Mont. Locally, Brooks made friends through his business and playing racquetball at the YMCA, the JCC and the Scranton Athletic Club. He enjoyed his lunches and Liars' Poker with "the boys." While membership of the lunch group changed over the years, the friendships and camaraderie remained constant.
We thank all those who assisted Brooks in his battle with Lewy's Body Dementia, helping to preserve his quality of life through difficult times. Of special note are Dr. Maya Lichtenstein of Geisinger, Cara Mohan of Allied Palliative Care, caregivers, Diane Dunn and Michael Chestnut, and the staff of Allied Hospice.
