Obituary Preview: A Bardstown resident, Debra Gayle “Debbie” Mattingly, age 56, passed away Saturday May 4, 2024 at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. She was born June 6, 1967 to George Donald Mattingly and Linda Joyce Corley Mattingly in Mercer County Kentucky. She was employed at Boones Butcher Shop for 24 years, loved floating the river, loved Halloween and was of the Baptist Faith. Her grandkids were her pride and joy.
Debbie was preceded in death by her father George Donald Mattingly.
She is survived by two daughters, Traci (Dale) Ruelas and Nikki (David) Reynolds, both of Bardstown; one son, Bobby Hillard Jr. of New Haven; her life partner, Steve Hughes; her bonus children, Autumn Hughes, Jake Hughes, both of Bardstown; her mother, Linda (Larry) Noort, of Willisburg; two sisters, Donna (Wayne) Beavers of Bardstown; and Dianna (Charlie) Nally, of Cox’s Creek; one brother, Donald (Lori) Mattingly Jr. of Lebanon; a step-sister, Ann Noort, of Bardstown and a step-brother, Allan (Allison) Noort of Mercer County; nine grandchildren, Blake, Breonna, Payton, Alex, Abby, Brayden, Eli, Anna, and Bentley, also survive.
A prayer service will be held Wednesday May 8, 2024 at 7:00pm by Larry Noort. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00pm-8:00pm and cremation will follow.

Mark Bennett Bivens - March 01, 1955 - April 27, 2024

Obituary Preview: A Louisville resident, Mr. Mark Bennett Bivens, age 69, crossed over peacefully with family at his bedside on Saturday, April 27, 2024. Mark was born in Bloomfield, Kentucky on March 1, 1955 to the late Bernice Leonard & J.P. Crume. He spent his early years with his mother, younger sister Angela and brother Donald. As a child, he enjoyed playing sports, fishing and hunting with family. He attended Nelson County High School and joined the U.S. Army in 1975. He served 4 years and was honorably discharged. He began working for various companies but spent many years as an employee at Shred-It.
Mark took pride in being a father. He loved his children and grandchildren deeply. Mark is survived by daughters, Felicia Taylor (Diane Phillips), Shenica Bailey (Carlos Bailey)(Pamela Maddox), Markea Bivens (Barbara Brown), bonus children, Steven, Robrika, Otis and Ciara. He leaves behind grandchildren, Dadrian, Tatyana, Akaiya, Ahulani, Aaliyah, Arianna, Harley, Aria, Kebrin, Kody, Dynasty, Caleb, Laterius, Oniaca, and many more. In his free time, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle, going fishing, and watching a Louisville game. Mark enjoyed being in the kitchen or throwing something on the grill!
He will be remembered fondly by his extended family and huge circle of friends, all whom were touched by his giving heart and funny personality.
A memorial service for Mr. Mark Bennett Bivens will be 3:00 pm Sunday, May 5, 2024 at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home. Rev. Enrique Butler, Sr. will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00-3:00pm with cremation to follow the services. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home.

Dorothy Wilson, SCN - June 01, 1928 - April 26, 2024

Obituary Preview: Dorothy Wilson, SCN, 95 (formerly Sister Isidore Maria) was born June 1, 1928, in Fancy Farm, Kentucky, to Joseph Leslie Wilson and Beatrice Cissell Wilson. She died on April 26, 2024, in Nazareth, Kentucky. She was a professed Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 74 years.
Growing up as a “country girl,” there was plenty to do between the house chores and the farm work. Five girls and six boys were in the family, and all pitched in. She and her siblings were educated by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth at St. Jerome Parish School. Although Sister Dorothy loved the country life, she spent most of her adult life serving in urban areas.
As a Sister of Charity of Nazareth, she spent 42 years in elementary education – 19 years as a teacher, seven years as principal, and 16 years as associate superintendent of schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville. Over the years, she served in Columbus, Ohio; Memphis, Tennessee; and Louisville, Kentucky, earning her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and superintendent certification on Saturdays and during the summers.
Following her work in education, Sister Dorothy served her SCN Community for 12 years at Nazareth Home in Louisville. As part of SCN Community Service, she provided health care assistance to her Sisters. After retirement from Community Service, Sister Dorothy volunteered with Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Louisville for many years.
She is survived by her sisters, Ruth W. Collins and Rose W. Douthit, her brother James Wilson, her extended family, and her religious community, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.
Sister Dorothy’s funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, May 1, at 10:30 a.m., and her wake will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30. The funeral and wake will be in Saint Vincent Church.

Dolores Ann Therasse, SCN - July 09, 1931 - April 26, 2024

Obituary Preview: Dolores Ann Therasse, SCN, 92, (formerly Sister Aloysius) was born July 9, 1931, in the small town of Bridgewater, PA, to Raymond Therasse and Ann Shovlin. She died on April 26, 2024, in Nazareth, Kentucky.
Growing up the youngest of four children, Sister Dolores Ann attended St. Joseph School in West Aliquippa, staffed by the Vincentian Sisters. During her junior year at St. Veronica’s High School, Sister Dolores Ann was invited to visit the Vincentian Motherhouse in Pittsburgh. That summer she served with the Sisters in Alabama caring for the people in that rural community. This experience nurtured her desire to become a Vincentian Sister of Charity.
Sister Dolores Ann entered the Vincentian Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1948, making first vows in August, 1951 and professing final vows, August 12, 1954. In 2008, when the Vincentian Sisters of Charity merged with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth she transferred her vows.
Sister Dolores Ann earned a BA from Duquesne University and furthered her studies in Elementary and Special Education at Cardinal Stritch College in Wisconsin.
After serving as an aide at Vincentian Home for two years, Sister Dolores Ann began her teaching career at St. Dominic School in Donora, PA. For over 20 years she served as a primary school teacher. From 1968-1974, she was assigned as principal of St. Denis School in Versailles, PA. In August of 1974, she began serving as the Director of Religious Education for St. Thomas A Becket Parish in Pittsburgh, PA. Sister Dolores Ann established and directed the Pre-school Program at the Parish until her retirement. She continually responded to the various needs of the parish for 45 years.
She is survived by her extended family, her longtime friends: Sister Mary Judith Seman, SCN, Gloria Otroba, Ann D’Antonio and Barbara Pitts, her beloved staff and parishioners of St Thomas A Becket and her religious community, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.
Sister Dolores Ann’s funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, May 7, at 10:30 a.m., and her wake service at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6. The funeral and wake will be celebrated in Saint Vincent Church, Nazareth, Ky.

She was born on November 20, 1927 in Bardstown to the late Charles Matthew Pennebaker and Josephine Lydian Dingle. Mary was a former cook for Talbott Tavern for many years and a member of the American Legion Post 167. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Springfield and served on the Missionary Committee. Mary Elizabeth and her friends formed the Lucky 8 club years ago to help others in the community along with their own friendship of doing things together.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Kimberland, son, Larry Johnson, sisters, Beatrice Watson, Mary Moore, brothers, June Gaither, Robert Lee Pennebaker and William Pennebaker.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Patricia “Patty” (Kevin) Rogers, sons, Bobby Kimberland, David (Frances) Kimberland, Stephen Kimberland, Mark (Josey) Kimberland all of Bardstown, sisters, Shirley Fleming of Killeen, Texas, Florence Groves of Harker Heights, Texas and her brother, Joseph Gaither of Mt. Holley, NJ. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren (one on the way) and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Pennebaker Kimberland will be 1:00pm, Friday, April 26, 2024 at the First Baptist Church in Bardstown. Interment will be in Bardstown Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 11:00am-1:00pm at the First Baptist Church. Houghlin Greenwell Funeral Home is entrusted with her arrangements.

He liked to work on cars and go fishing, drive back to the mountains and be with his grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: Beverly Hedgespeth Montgomery, a beacon of love and creativity, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday at the age of 85. Born in Louisville, Kentucky on March 10, 1939, she embodied grace and kindness, touching countless lives with her gentle spirit.
Her greatest joy was her family: late husband James Montgomery, her sister, Celeste Ward, daughters Rebecca Floyd and Susan Mayes-Cottrell, sons-in-law Billy Floyd and Chris Mayes-Cottrell. She had five grandchildren whom she adored; Kyle and Jacob Bissell, William and Ian Rogers-Floyd, and Ariana Ridgway. Beverly’s nurturing extended beyond family – her garden bloomed under her care, mirroring her intricate quilting and sewing creations. She loved Elvis, and she loved a good bargain even more.
Her legacy is not only in her artistry, but also in her boundless generosity and warmth. Though she’s physically departed, her spirit remains a guiding light. May she rest in peace.

He was born on January 23, 1938 in Samuels to the late Owen and Carlene Loveland Thurman. Paul worked for KY Solite in Shepherdsville, was a lifelong member of St. Gregory Catholic Church., where he was on the bereavement committee and helped with the church picnic. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Paul loved fishing, hunting, mushroom and turkey hunting. He was an avid gardener, liked taking walks, and loved to go riding in his golf cart. Paul loved to cook chicken soup, play the guitar, old country music and family gatherings. He loved saying the rosary every night.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Betty Jo Wilson Thurman, his daughter Cindy Thurman and his sisters, Martha Cahoe, Kathleen Faulkner, Gonda Thompson, Mary Thurman, Lina Cundiff, brothers, Jim and Larry Thurman.
Paul is survived by 3 sons, Bill (Donna) Thurman, Kenny (Sandy) Thurman, Michael (Lisa) Thurman, his daughter, Patty (David) Martin all of Bardstown, his sisters, Carolyn Downs, Kathy Spalding and a brother, Joe Thurman all of Bardstown. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Paul Thurman will be 10:00am Friday, April 19, 2024 at St. Gregory The Great Catholic Church with Rev. Kien Nguyen celebrant. Interment will be in St. Gregory Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 3:00-8:00pm with evening prayers and from 8:30-9:30am Friday at the Houghlin Greenwell Funeral Home who is in charge of arrangements. He loved to do wood working and had a passion for helping others and was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson, Bryson Xavier Riggs, sisters, Clara Roederer, Rose Townsend, 2 brothers, Joseph Watson, James H. Watson, Jr. and a nephew, Jeff Roederer.
David is survived by his wife, Connie Greenwell Watson of Mammoth Cave, his daughter, Courtney Riggs of Bardstown, his son, Damien (Amy) Riggs of Indiana, and his 3 grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and friends and all of his dogs.

Charles Ogden Estes III - June 03, 1942 - April 07, 2024

Obituary Preview: Charles Ogden Estes III, 81, of Bardstown, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2024 at Lincoln Hills Nursing Home in New Albany, Indiana. Charles was born on June 3, 1942 in Winchester, Kentucky to the late Charles Ogden and Mary Webb Estes. Charles retired from Ford Motor Company where he worked for 28 years. He was proud to be a member of the Knights of Columbus and of his Catholic faith. He loved the outdoors and was an avid deer hunter with both gun and bow & arrow and was an excellent marksman. His trophies were proudly hung on his garage wall and he always shared his special deer meat chili and summer sausage. Charles was a people person who never met a stranger and was always ready to share a joke and a laugh or a kind word. He loved dancing and singing to karaoke, riding his four wheeler, bird watching, playing cornhole, the Kentucky Wildcats, family gatherings and vacations with family.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Burnett, grandsons, Francisco and Andre Estes and his beloved dog Winnie.
Charles is survived by his loving wife Irene of 38 years, his daughter, Yolanda (Joel) Estes Taylor, son Chuck Estes, daughter Heather (Bill) Estes, stepdaughters, Deborah (Tommy)Seaman and Melissa (Pete) Kowalewski, grandchildren, Devin, Georgia, Yoey, great grandson, Alexander Estes, step-grandchildren, Chase and Alyssa (Dylan), his sisters, Sue Simpson, Judy Gibbs and Suzanne Sparks.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00am, Saturday, April 13, 2024 at St. Thomas Catholic Church with Rev. Steven Reeves celebrant. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery-Louisville. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00-8:00pm with prayers at 5:30pm and Saturday from 8:30-9:30am at the Houghlin Greenwell Funeral Home who is in charge of arrangements. He was born on May 17, 1936 to the late Richard Lee and Josephine Middleton Curtsinger. Clarence worked at Beams Distillery for 20 years while farming. Eventually he started farming full time and was a successful farmer providing for his family. He liked to go to the casino when he had time and enjoyed time with his family. He was a member of AA for 30 plus years. Clarence was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Pauline Newton Curtsinger, his son, Joseph Gregory “Greg” Curtsinger, along with 10 siblings, Evelyn Witt, Dorothy Crowe, Mary Alice Taylor, Bessie Hawthorne, Dessie Hawthorne, Anna Belle Curtsinger, Earl, Charles, James “Jim”, Richard Jr. “Junnie” Curtsinger.
Clarence is survived by 2 daughters, Cindy C. Fowler of Bardstown, Missy (Ronnie) Trent of Bloomfield, 4 sons, Wayne (Connie) Curtsinger, Bruce (Jean) Curtsinger, Denny Curtsinger all of Bardstown, Jeff (Nora) Curtsinger of Bloomfield and a sister, Kathy (Jerry) Horton of Bedford. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. The family would like to thank Hospice of Nelson County, Carol Curtsinger and Kayley Crowe for all their help.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00am, Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church with Rev. Kirby Rust celebrant. Interment will be in St. Joseph Church Cemetery. Billy was a longtime employee of Hamilton Powerline Construction and an avid truck puller, the “Rolling Thunder Jr.”.He also loved to camp and his cat Smokey.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bill and Lucille Hamilton, his maternal grandparents, Robert Settles and Gertie Settles Yates.
Billy is survived by his wife of 44 years, Donna Jeanne Faulkner Hamilton, his mother, Bobbie Ann Settles Hamilton, father, Charles Edward (Edna Powell) Hamilton, 2 brothers, Gary Wayne (Lisa) Hamilton, Timothy Edward (Robin) Hamilton, 2 sisters, Becky Carrick, Wanda Rose Melton, 4 sister-in-laws, Teresa (Mike) Tucker, Connie (Pat)Hagan, Belinda Sharpe, Carla Medley, along with several nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his daughters, Debra Sue Bodine of Bardstown, Darlene (Charlie) Ball of Boston, Dell (Terry) Vittitow, Dawn (Kent) Culver, both of Bardstown, his son, Daniel Anthony (Carol) Ferguson of New Haven, and his brother, Bro. Ike (Peggy) Ferguson of Bardstown. 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and was a retired employee of 39 years from Barton Distillery. He loved his family unconditionally, especially his grandchildren. They were his pride and joy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Christine Hagan Janes, a son, Joseph Vincent Greenwell, great grandson, Tyler Unseld, brothers, Frank, Henry, Ivan and Clarence Janes, and sisters, Betty Ann Borders, Theresa Inmon, Pauline Price, Margaret Sea and Louise Bryant.
He is survived by his son, Charlie Janes of Lexington, daughters, Diane (John) Unseld, Marlene (Dada Smith) Greenwell, both of Bardstown, Faye (Ben Pardieu) Janes of Lexington, Mona (Danny) Allen of Bardstown, daughter-in-law, Judy (Butch Hummel) Greenwell of Canada. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
His passing has left a void that can never be filled, but his love for his family will never die, nor will our love for him. He truly was the man, the myth, the legend, and was one of a kind.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am, Friday, March 15, 2024 at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral. Rev. Terry Bradshaw, celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Church Cemetery.
