Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral home's website.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral service and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A good rule of thumb is to aim for around 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper through their website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be sure to check their guidelines and deadlines for submission.

Can I write my own obituary?

Absolutely! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life is celebrated in the way you want. Just be sure to share it with your loved ones so they know what you want.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Some may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting to avoid errors.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a great way to capture the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to keep it respectful and appropriate for all readers.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or conflicts surrounding the deceased's life or death, it's best to consult with family members or a professional writer for guidance on how to handle these topics with tact and respect.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or values.

DON'T WORRY! Many funeral homes offer assistance with writing obituaries, or you can hire a professional writer who specializes in this area.

How do I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

Triple-check facts like dates, names, and spellings to avoid errors. It's also a good idea to have multiple people review the obituary before submission.

Can I include information about memorial services or donations in an obituary?

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

What if I need to correct an error in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publisher immediately if you notice an error. They may be able to issue a correction or reprint the revised obituary.

Can I create an online memorial or tribute page instead of publishing an obituary?

Absolutely! Online memorials can be a beautiful way to celebrate someone's life and allow friends and family to share memories and condolences.

How do I decide what details to include in an online memorial?

Consider including photos, stories, quotes, and other personal touches that reflect the person's personality and spirit. You can also invite others to contribute their own memories and tributes.

Are online memorials permanent?

MOST online memorials are intended to be permanent tributes. However, it's always a good idea to check with the hosting platform for their policies on archiving and preserving content over time.
