Departed: 04/22/2024 (Hershey)
Obituary Preview: Joseph A Luciani, 75, of Hershey, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2024 at Masonic Village of Elizabethtown.  Born July 31, 1948 in the old Hershey Hospital, he was a son to the late Yola (Guardiani) Luciani and Albert Luciani.   He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 46 years, Carol (Elliott) Luciani.
He was a graduate of Hershey High School (1966), and Penn State University (1972).  At Penn State he had focused on History and English, in hopes of becoming a teacher. While there he enjoyed acting in many plays as preparation for working in front of crowds.   He got married and started a family, which turned his trajectory to work in the insurance industry and also a bartender at the Hershey Italian Lodge, before creating a life working at Hershey Foods, where he was also a union representative.   While he did not become a full-time teacher, he did use his educational skills to teach CCD for a time.
A voracious reader, and fan of facts, he enjoyed any chance to share education with his kids or anyone who would listen.  His favorite thing was to spend time with his family. A product of his generation, he was a baseball fan (Yankees) and for a time enjoyed attending Senators games with his kids and bonus kid.   He enjoyed attending shows with his beloved wife, dinners with friends and family, and used to be a wonderful mini golf player.    He could recite the entire Jesus Christ Superstar movie and soundtrack, as well as most of the series M.A.S.H.   He was also a fan of obscure and odd movies, trivia and crossword puzzles.   He made fantastic pizza’s and “daddy burgers”.  He also enjoyed a fantasy football league with his son, where they are the current champions.  Also, a fan of cards, he enjoyed playing pinochle and poker with his friends at Masonic Village, as well as being a member of the chess club.
He was always happy to be around people and was often referred to as such a nice guy, and fun to talk to.  While living at Masonic he had gained a reputation as both the ‘candy man’ (for having a candy dish outside his door for all to enjoy) and ‘the walker’ for walking daily outside the building.  Despite having suffered many medical ailments, he rolled with each one, with a quiet calm not found in many. A member of St. Joan of Arc, he held his faith close to his heart and looked to it in the darkest of times.  He was also a 4th degree knight in the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his son, James Luciani (Harrisburg), daughter Alicia Luciani (Hershey) and her boyfriend, Ken Evans(bonus kid),  sister, Gloria Herberg (Lebanon), sister Patricia Luciani (Sister Mary Albert of New York), brother, Dennis Luciani (Lebanon), many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.

Departed: 04/09/2024 (Hershey)
Obituary Preview: John “Jack” Womer, 85 of Stevens passed away peacefully on April 9, 2024 at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center surrounded by his family. Jack was born June 2, 1938 in Zerbe, Schuylkill County, a son of the late Florence (Womer) Tobin. Jack was the loving husband of Peggy J. (Fenstermacher) Womer, with whom he celebrated 64 years of marriage in December.

Jack was owner of Jack’s Bike Shop which he ran for 50 years. Whether he was tinkering with gears or spinning tales with customers, Jack found solace and joy amidst the greasy tools and well-worn tires. His dedication to his craft was evident in every perfectly tuned bike that left his shop, and his presence will be sorely missed by the cycling community.
He enjoyed going on vacations to Memphis, Nashville, and Disney World with family and friends. Among the memories of magical castles and toe-tapping tunes, there’s one tale that stands out - the time Jack and his good friend thwarted a staged train robbery by calmly disarming the would-be bandit and turning the tables on the entire cast. Needless to say, it was a vacation none of his family will ever forget.
In addition to his devoted wife who he often referred to as his lovely bride, Jack is survived by his three children; two daughters, Jody (Scott) Galyon of Lititz, Tammy Womer, of Ephrata; son John R. In lieu of tears, the family requests that you pour yourself a glass of your favorite wine, raise it high, and think about Jack - a man who lived life to the fullest, one sip at a time. Cheers, Jack, may your glass always be full wherever you are.

Beulah Melvin Chabal - November 23, 1950 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Hershey)
Obituary Preview: Beulah Melvin Chabal
After a long battle with ovarian cancer, Beulah Chabal, 73, of Hummelstown, passed away on April 4, 2024 in the arms of her loving husband at Hospice of Central Pennsylvania’s Carolyn's House.
One of five children of the late Judge Woodrow M. Melvin and Juanita Weeks Melvin, Beulah was born November 23, 1950 in the same bedroom in which her father was born, in the home built by her grandfather, in the small Florida panhandle town of Milton. When she was young, the family moved from town to a wooded 20 acres on the scenic Blackwater Bay where her days were filled with outdoor adventures (think snakes, gators, and other scary things), the occasional hurricane, and glorious sunsets.
Beulah earned a degree in early childhood education from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, and taught school for a number of years. While traveling around the country in the early days of her marriage to her Navy pilot husband, she earned a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from the University of Southern Maine and an MBA from Southern New Hampshire University. She was a certified elementary school principal in Pennsylvania.
Her love of travel led her to positions as the Pennsylvania State Travel Director and later in economic development in the Department of State, positions from which she “retired” to raise a family. She came out of “retirement” several times, including a stint as the Executive Director of the Pa. Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, but her nurturing spirit always called her back to her beloved family. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared purpose. She was very proud of the adults her kids had become and the loving way they are raising her grandkids.
Before her illness, Beulah was always very active in her community and volunteered her time to a number of causes and organizations. She was appointed to the Board of the Harrisburg Academy, elected to the Derry Township School Board where her peers chose her as their president, appointed to the Hershey Library Foundation Board, and volunteered for the Hershey Medical Center Association of Faculty and Friends, the Hershey Medical Center Standardized Patient Program, and the Hershey Food Bank, to name a few. She exemplified the virtues of kindness, generosity, and empathy and touched the hearts of all who knew her. No one was a stranger to Beulah. (The kids hated this in the grocery store!) If you met her, you were a friend. Even near the end of her earthly life, she continued to touch the hearts of the healthcare workers who cared for her. Her sparkly green eyes and contagious smile lit up even the gloomiest hospital room.
They say you can take the girl out of the South, but you can’t take the South out of the girl. After decades up north, Beulah still clung to her southern roots and could often be seen in her “Girl Raised in the South” (GRITS) hats and “No Grits, No Glory” t-shirts. She enjoyed periodic visits to her favorite “Coffee Cup” restaurant, a Pensacola, FL landmark. It only took a minute back home for her sweet southern drawl to return. Beulah's light may have dimmed, but her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. May she rest in eternal peace, knowing that she made the world a better place through her selfless acts of love and kindness. Thanks be to God for sharing her with us!
Surviving is her husband, Matthew Chabal, III; daughter, Sarah (Jake) Longolucco; son, Matthew (Kelsey) Chabal, IV; her three grandchildren, Laine, Hannah, and Hayes (and Caroline on the way), two brothers, Woodrow M. Melvin, Jr, and S. James Melvin; sister, Laura N. Melvin, and many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends she considered family. She was predeceased by her sister Ginger Melvin.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at 10:00 am in the Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 East Derry Rd., Hershey. Visitation will be at the church at 9:00 am until time of service.

Margery M. Kokal - September 11, 1924 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (Hershey)
Obituary Preview: Margery Mayer Kokal
Margery M. Kokal was born on September 11, 1924 in Baltimore Maryland.  She was the daughter of Harry and Lucille Mayer and was raised in Philadelphia with her younger brother, Harry. Marge was an accomplished athlete in both riding and golf. She met and married her husband, Russ Hironimus, a forestry major, in State College while she was working for the Dean of Graduate Studies at Penn State University. After college Russ took a job as a Ranger with the National Park Service in Acadia National Park. They lived for several years in a rustic cabin at Otter Point. During the winter, Marge chopped the water from the ice bucket and melted the ice chunks in a pot on the wood-burning stove to provide water. This would not be confused with glamping nor would Marge be mistaken for Julia Child. They subsequently moved to Latrobe where they had two sons, Randy (deceased) and Bruce (Pinehurst, NC). They relocated to Hershey where Marge lived in the same house for 67 years. Russ died of a heart attack at age 45, so Marge went back to work at a family physicians office and eventually the Hershey Medical Center to help pioneer the Family Medicine Department.  A few years passed, and while volunteering with the cub scouts as a den-mother, she met the love her life, Joseph Kokal. Joseph was a brilliant and artistic Orthopedic Technician at the Elizabethtown Crippled Children's Hospital. She eventually left her job at the Medical Center to work at Hershey Foods as the office manager in the Public Relations Department. Suffice to say, "Marge was in Charge".  Her son Bruce married Dee Sestokas Hironimus in 1976.  Marge immediately had a daughter with whom a mutual love and affection never ceased growing.
Marge retired after 20 years.  Joseph and his "Margie" embraced their life together until Joseph's death due to complications after a five-year battle with Alzheimer's. Marge never slowed down with her efforts to support and help anyone in her circle. Few who read this, may not possess a hand knitted item, a hickory basket, or a piece of her exquisite hand-made jewelry.  She contributed throughout her life in many more ways than dollars could ever be counted.  A private burial service will be held at the Hershey Cemetery.
