Maria D. Sizemore - May 05, 1937 - February 20, 2024

Departed: 02/20/2024 (Virginia Beach)
Obituary Preview: Maria Diaz Sizemore, aka Angie, from Virginia Beach, VA was born on May 5, 1937, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Our beloved mother was the daughter of the late Ramon Diaz and Carmen Rodrigo. from San Juan, PR. After high school she went to New York City to study business and returned home to San Juan to be with her family of eight siblings. She met her husband, Jimmy Sizemore, at her favorite beach spot and married a year later.
She was a loving wife and mother who always made sure her family came first. As a Navy wife, she lived in many places including Rota, Spain. Rota was one of her favorite places and remembered it as some of her best years. She enjoyed cooking and usually would volunteer to be the primary home for entertaining her friends and family. She relished outdoor BBQ’s on the beach with her family and friends and would often bring enough food for an army. She was a social person and a friend to many. She will be remembered for her charitable ways, always willing to help those less fortunate. She was fond of the Top 40 music of the 70's and 80's, some country music, and most of all traditional Puerto Rican Borinquen music. She took delight in dancing and singing. She loved all animals, and you would often see her feeding birds and squirrels in her backyard. There was always a dog or cat in her home. Our mom was an active person who was always busy cleaning her home, cooking, ironing, spending time with family and going out for cocktails with her husband.
She was known as Pita or Tata to her grandchildren. She took pleasure in seeing her five grandchildren and often gave them money, candy and cooked their favorite Puerto Rican cuisine. Everyone would agree she was the best cook all around. In her later years at The Memory Center, she was the busy one, the curious one who befriended every nurse who worked there. She really enjoyed their company and would always insist on wiping down the tables or washing the dishes. We are grateful she had a great experience while there.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Yvonne Sizemore and Darlene Herbert. Her son-in-law Gary Richards, her five grandchildren Trey Herbert, Shandler Olsen, Tyler Herbert, Riley Heerbrandt, and Hunter Richards. Her sisters Belen Diaz, Cheeki Diaz, Zaira Diaz, and Wanda Diaz. Her brothers Ramon and Eric Diaz. Her special friend, Maria Owens, who always made time to visit. All the nurses and staff at The Memory Center who will always remember the happy dancing and singing, Angie.
We love our beloved mother, and we miss her deeply every day as she rests in peace at the Arlington National Memorial Cemetery alongside her husband, Jimmy. The burial date and time is to be determined.

Gary Lee Ruegsegger - October 20, 1950 - January 12, 2024

Departed: 01/12/2024 (Virginia Beach)
Obituary Preview: Gary Lee Ruegsegger. 73, was a Princess Anne County native [now Virginia Beach]. He was born on October 20, 1950 at Leigh Memorial Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, to Anton and Rose Ruegsegger. He passed away on January 12, 2024.
He was a graduate of St. Pius X School and Norfolk Catholic High School. After graduation from high school, he enrolled at Old Dominion University, eventually earning undergraduate and graduate degrees.
With his own education completed, Gary decided to give back to his community by focusing his career efforts on providing quality education to Norfolk’s young citizens as a classroom teacher – at the middle school and high school levels.
Hardworking, innovative, and dedicated, he proved to be an excellent teacher much to the benefit of his students.
Gary had integrity. His students noticed it. His supervisors noticed it. His colleagues noticed it. Gary always did the right thing – for the right reason. It gratified some folks and absolutely astonished the rest. His moral compass was infallible.
His colleagues and associates recognized that Gary had leadership skills. He led by example. People respected him for his leadership style. Gary proved that he could be depended upon to accomplish whatever undertaking he was assigned.
Gary was always more concerned with successfully completing his assigned task than with who received the credit. Whenever someone else claimed credit for his work – it happened routinely – Gary noticed but never complained. He was satisfied that he had succeeded in carrying out the project.
He was humble and completely unpretentious. He could gracefully accept sincere recognition without indulging in an ego trip. His feet were firmly planted in reality. He was not a self-promoter.
When offered a project assignment, Gary was quick to recognize an opportunity when he saw one. He received an e-mail from Norfolk’s deputy superintendent asking if he would be interested in writing a history of the Norfolk Public Schools. Gary saw the offer as an opportunity and accepted the assignment. He threw himself – heart and soul – into the project and completed it within a year.
Norfolk Public Schools was so impressed with the quality of Gary’s work that the school system hosted a book signing event at Granby High School with Gary Ruegsegger as the guest of honor. Gary seemed more embarrassed than flattered by the attention.
Recognizing Gary’s talent for writing and ability to complete a difficult project on time, Norfolk Public Schools offered Gary an opportunity to serve as a grant writer for the system. Gary appreciated the opportunity and began writing grant requests. Over time, Gary managed to secure millions of dollars in grants for Norfolk’s schools. He was pleased that Norfolk had secured grant money for important school programs.
As a sideline – after significant success as a writer – Gary decided to dabble in newspaper journalism as a correspondent with the Virginian-Pilot. Gary enjoyed celebrating the notable achievements of others in his newspaper articles. He developed strong friendships. Gary was named the Sportswriter of the Year by the Chesapeake Athletic Club three times. He enjoyed the friendships and took the attention in stride.
Gary was a lifelong Pittsburgh Pirates fan. When the Pirates whipped the Yankees in the 1960 World Series, Gary was ecstatic. He became an avid collector of Pittsburgh Pirate memorabilia. Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski, Smokey Burgess, and Barry Bonds were among his all-time favorite baseball heroes. Catcher Hank Foiles was an admired friend.
Gary visited the Pirates’ Forbes Field site. He was rained out at McKechnie Field in Bradenton and shut out at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, but remained loyal to his Pittsburgh crew.
Following a trip to Europe and a visit to Interlaken, Bern in Switzerland, Gary was inspired to purchase Swiss woodcarving tools and actively pursued woodcarving as a hobby. He became a skilled woodcarver, a folk artist, and a builder of exotic bird houses.
Gary’s life and work – whether he intended it or not – embraced the tenets of the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr’s Serenity Prayer. Gary possessed the serenity to accept what he could not change, the courage to change what he could, and the wisdom to know the difference. Embracing those traits saved Gary time and kept him from spinning his tires needlessly. It made him highly productive.
If there is a heaven – and Gary believed there was – Gary indubitably entered the Pearly Gates immediately. After meeting with the divine dignitaries, Gary promptly began setting up his priorities.
He wouldn’t have spent time watching Mickey Mantle smack home runs, helping Roberto Clemente field fly balls, or harmonizing with Harry Belefonte. He’ll get around to all of that later.
Gary (St. Gary) has probably already begun preparing grant proposals and filing requests for pardons on behalf of all of the less righteous friends he left behind, hoping to provide them with a fair chance to join him – in due time.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife Peggy, stepson Richard Fuller, brother Bob and his wife Brenda, niece Micah and nephew Karl. Also by a special cousin Michele Barbagallo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church on January 29, 2024 at 10:45 a.m.

Jess M. Harris III - September 22, 1932 - January 03, 2024

Departed: 01/03/2024 (Virginia Beach)
Obituary Preview: Pop Harris, 91, died on January 3, 2024 in Virginia Beach much the same way he lived his life—at peace with the world and on his own terms. After enduring a number of new physical setbacks over the past several months, he decided to forego additional unnecessary medical interventions and, instead, enjoy spending time with his family and watching as much football as possible.
Jess M. Harris III was born on September 22, 1932 in Wilburton, OK and was a handful from the beginning, enjoying sports, especially football, and the outdoors. After graduating from Wilburton High School, Pop—which was short for his childhood nickname, Popeye— and his best friend, Stanley Funderburg, enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard. Pop served with the United States Army’s Third Infantry during the Korean War and remained a member of the Oklahoma National Guard until he entered Naval Flight Training in January 1958.
After the Korean War, he graduated from Eastern Oklahoma State College and then the University of Oklahoma, where he met Barbara. They married on August 24, 1957. Spurning his family’s insistence that he follow in his father’s footsteps and become a dentist, Pop decided he wanted to fly helicopters, instead, and joined the US Navy to fulfill that dream. After graduating from flight school, he served in several San Diego based helicopter squadrons and deployed to Vietnam throughout the 1960’s. He was on board the USS Enterprise in the Pacific Ocean headed to Vietnam in January 1969 when a missile detonated on the flight deck, causing substantial damages to the ship and numerous casualties. Amidst the chaos on the flight deck, Pop was able to launch his helicopter and rescue as many personnel as he could.
Pop graduated from the Naval War College in 1971 and received a master’s degree in International Relations from George Washington University. He served in the Navy until 1984, retiring as a Commander and remaining in his adopted home of Virginia Beach. As modest as he was strong-willed, Pop rarely discussed his military career or his experiences, telling people that he just delivered the mail to ships.
Pop was predeceased by his sons, Jesse Marvin Harris IV and Michael Joseph Harris, his wife Barbara Sue Burke Harris, and his parents, Jesse Marvin Harris, Jr. and Eva Maxine DeBusk Harris. He is survived by his daughter Nancy Kroll and son-in-law Sam Kroll, his grandchildren, Jordan (Alex), Michael (Mackenzie) and Maxie (Clark) Kroll, two great-granddaughters, Sophie Robinson and Isabella Kroll, his sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Don Wilson, nieces Julie Sawyer and Caroline Tyson, nephew Wade Wilson and great-nieces.
A memorial service will be held at Haygood United Methodist Church on Friday January 12, 2024 at 1:00 pm. Visitation will be at Hollomon-Brown Funeral, Bayside Chapel on Thursday January 11, 2024 beginning at 6 p.m.
A special thanks to Lipton House and the caretakers there.
