Shauma Meyer - September 11, 1983 - February 19, 2022

Departed: 02/19/2022 (Rushford)
Obituary Preview: There are templates to help with writing a common obituary. Their format cannot be followed here because this obituary must describe an uncommon person. Shauma Renee Benson was born on September 11, 1983 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, to her mother, Michele Benson, but everything that happened after that was uniquely Shauma. As she entered school, even her kindergarten teacher, Barb Culhane noticed this uncanny ability to see into other people's hearts, to empathize with them and be called to action on their behalf. Her teacher said: "Shauma is the most mature and intuitive kindergartener I have ever taught in my lifetime."As she grew, her love of people and children called her into service to mankind. She graduated from Winona State University as a Licensed Social Worker and through several agencies, brought justice, peace, and healing to others. No situation of injustice or need escaped her eye, nor her call to action. She was a warrior for the underprivileged, the ill, the homeless, the forgotten and the troubled. She met and married Brad Meyer, and together they became the parents of four wonderful children, Grace Hannah, 17; Sophie Joe Benson, 13; Charlotte Michele, 11; and George Bradley, 8. To these children she gave the gift of a love taught to us by Jesus Christ through the apostle Paul: Patience and kindness, relationships without conceit, pride or the notice of wrongs, a love that clings to truth, faith, hope, and endures all things. In addition to her family, she loved the ocean, campfires, people watching, reading and photography. Laughing was more than the expression of happiness for her, it was a way of life. Her joy was always near the surface and was meant to be shared. Her body struggled to conquer a liver disease, however on Saturday, February 19, 2022 she peacefully passed through the door into eternal peace and happiness. Her family was at her side, and she was safe in the same room as when her loving grandfather, Llewellyn Benson made that same journey exactly 13 years earlier. Our faith assures us that she was welcomed into Heaven not only by "Bumpa", but all the company of saints that preceded her: grandparents, uncles and aunts, cousins, and dear friends. We all grieve the loss of her presence in our lives, but we know we will see her again. Her entire family: husband Brad Meyer; children Grace, Sophie, Charlotte, and George; mother Michele Thompson; brothers Jeremy Olson and Tanner Olson; step-fathers Mark Olson and Daryl Thompson; grandmother Nancy Benson, mother and father-in-law Bonnie and Duane Meyer; many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and cousins all wish to say "thank you" for the kindness of our communities, for your thoughts and prayers, as well as for the contributions to Go-Fund-Me and through other channels.Visitation will be Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Hoff Funeral Home in Rushford, MN with the funeral service following at 11:00 AM, Rev Daryl Thompson officiating.

Departed: 01/17/2022 (Rushford)
Obituary Preview: Please click the link to the YouTube channel included here to view Dr. Peterson's service virtually at 1:30 on Sunday, March 20:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwKebMlaXqoRl9q79EFDYywANNOUNCEMENT: THERE WILL BE A CELEBRATION OF DOC'S LIFE AT 1:30 P.M. ON SUNDAY, MARCH 20 AT THE RUSHFORD - PETERSON HIGH SCHOOL THEATER. FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL, THE FAMILY REQUESTS THAT ALL IN ATTENDENCE WEAR A MASK.Dr. John R. Peterson, "Doc Pete," 90, of Rushford, MN made his final rounds on Monday, January 17, 2022, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford, five years after suffering a debilitating stroke. Doc touched the lives of many during his 62 years in Rushford as a physician, farmer, sports enthusiast, school board member, golf partner, and supporter of the community he loved.John Robert Peterson was born in the depths of the Great Depression on June 28, 1931, in Butte, MT to Alfred and Emma (Hedstrom) Peterson. He was raised on a cattle ranch in the Big Hole Valley near Jackson, Montana. He attended a one-room school house where he and his brother, Darwin, were infamous for placing a dead skunk in the stove vent to reap a few days off. Doc graduated from Dillon High School in 1949 and went on to the University of Montana where he completed in three years the courses required for admission to the University of Oregon Medical School. He was one of two students from Montana accepted to the medical school that year where he received his Bachelor of Science degree and then his M.D. in 1956. Doc married his high school sweetheart, Elaine Andersen, during his summer break in 1954. Knowing little of Minnesota winters, Doc, Elaine and son, Greg, moved to St. Paul after medical school where Doc completed an internship at Ancker Hospital (now Regions). Daughter Cindy was born there on January 30, 1957, which Doc always claimed was the coldest day ever. He then served in the U.S. Air Force in Texas as a flight surgeon for two years. Here, he met several pilots who flew U-2 spy planes and experienced, firsthand, the thrill of ejecting from a fighter jet that lost its canopy at 20,000 feet. Having been persuaded by its city leaders to practice medicine in Rushford, Doc Pete started in at the Rushford Community Clinic on July 2, 1959. He later obtained his board certification in Family Practice and served the community of Rushford as a physician until 2011. Doc was committed to the excellent care of his patients and was available to them, day or night, for decades. Doc and Elaine had four children, Greg (Heidi) Peterson, Cynthia(Scott) Reedstrom, Cheryl (Joel) Peterson-Schurke, and MichaelPeterson, along with ten grandchildren: Emily, Anna, Cristina, Brittany, Rachelle, Maren, Elizabeth, Amelia, Olivia, and Cecelia (three of whom followed in Doc's footsteps as physicians); and eight great-grandchildren, all of whom survive him. Judi Pronk, Doc's partner and dedicated caregiver; Eamon McQuillan, his "Irish son"; and long-term friends, Rob and Bettie Lou Bunke, also survive him. Doc Pete was preceded in death by Elaine, his parents, brothers Darwin, Harold and Dick, and grandson-in-law, Vince Glasgow. Doc Pete lived a rich and adventure-filled life. He loved to hit the slopes with his kids and watched Mike grow to become an expert skier. He returned often with his family to the mountains of Montana to visit the ranch his brother Harold ran and to fish the crystal clear waters of the alpine lakes he discovered as a young boy. When his brother, Darwin, moved his family to Alaska, Doc visited frequently to fish the glacier-fed Kenai River for trophy rainbow trout and salmon with his brothers and cousin, Russell Peterson. He traveled several times to Brazil with nephew, Pete, where he fished for peacock bass on the Amazon and parasailed off a mountain in Rio de Janeiro. At home, Doc treasured the times his kids and grandkids came to visit him at "the Big Green House." Doc's heart never left Rushford, though, where he cherished the time spent at Ferndale golfing with his many friends and at "The Farm" tending to his prized black angus cattle. Above all, he remained forever grateful that the good people of the Rushford area afforded him the opportunity to fulfill his calling as a healer, a servant, and a friend. The family extends a special thank you to the staff of Good Shepherd and to Judi for the tender loving care they delivered to Doc. The family also is very grateful for the many friends who visited and supported Doc these past five years and who assisted him with transportation. Given that Doc would not have wanted to be responsible for spreading COVID at a funeral service, his family has decided to delay a celebration of his life until May. Details will follow.Memorials in honor of Doc Pete can be made to the Good Shepherd Foundation, P.O. Box 612, Rushford, MN 55971. Please leave a memory of Doc Pete and sign his online guestbook at www.hofffuneral.com.

Patricia Lawrence - January 15, 1932 - January 12, 2022

Departed: 01/12/2022 (Rushford)
Obituary Preview: Pat Lawrence was reunited with her parents, siblings, son, Brian Bushman, grandson, Kris Paulson, and Jesus Christ on Wednesday, January 12, 2022. She passed peacefully in her sleep with family by her side. She was born in Chicago, IL on January 15, 1932, to Frank and Bridget (Connelly)Hann. At the age of 15 she went to the convent to become a nun. Much to the delight of her 9 children, 19 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. She ran away 6 months into her stay.Pat worked hard her entire life and held a variety of jobs including meter reader, waitress, and manager of the 4-H Diner at the Carlton County Fair.Pat spent many years volunteering and serving her community by preparing taxes for the elderly, serving as a cub scout leader, and holding various officer positions at both the Barnum and Rushford American Legion Auxiliary. Pat enjoyed crocheting afghans, doing crossword puzzles, fishing, knitting, and camping in her own camper. Occasionally, Pat paid homage to her proud Irish roots by partaking in some Drambuie shots with family and friends into the wee hours of the morning. She was instantly loved by everyone she met. No matter the person's age or background, she became their grandma. She was lovingly referred to as Grandma Pat, Grandma G and G-Bone. She loved meeting new people. What Pat loved most in the world were her children. This was evident by her telling of stories about each and every one of them during their childhood. She told these stories over and over and over again. Pat never stopped worrying about her children's health and happiness and prayed for them daily. She will be greatly missed by her children: Tim Powers of Merrillville, IN, Elaine Paulson of Rushford, MN, Sue (Dale) Calverley of Mahtowa, MN, Mary (Dominic) Williams of Valparaiso, IN, Sharon (Melvin) Palmer of St. Marks, FL, Kevin Powers of Merrillville, IN, Bill Powers of Barnum, MN and Patrick (Tina) Bushman of Owasso, MI.Pat loved to travel, and she often didn't stay in one place very long, going on many "walkabouts" throughout her life. The last two decades of Pats life have been spent in Rushford protecting her great-grandchildren, Cody, and Coltin Paulson from their parents, Scuffy Paulson and Tami Sheff. Pat made sure that they were sufficiently spoiled with lots of love, toys, and minimal discipline. She ensured their complete freedom and happiness by getting them anything their heart desired, which sometimes included puppies, mice, and chickens. She achieved this by sneaking around and occasional "discussions" that may or may not have involved her dropping a few profanities and the occasional middle finger. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall softly upon your fields, and Until we meet again, May the Good Lord hold you in the Hollow of His hand. There will be a celebration of life for Pat at 3:00 pm on April 16, 2022, at the Rushford American Legion in Rushford, MN.

David Birchell - June 22, 1948 - November 28, 2021

Departed: 11/28/2021 (Rushford)
Obituary Preview: "Awake at dawn with a winged heart, and give thanks for another day of loving."
With great sadness, his family shares that David Michael Birchell, age 73, of Rushford, left this world on November 28th, 2021, to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
David was born in 1948 in Pedee, Oregon. His parents were Richard and Mildred Birchell. The family lived in several states, from Oregon to New Mexico, before settling in the native Alaskan village of Venetie where David's dad accepted a position teaching in the village school. Living in Venetie, immersed in the Athabaskan native culture shaped David's character with strength and diversity, and instilled a sense of adventure within him for the rest of his life.
David joined the United States Army as a young man, was deployed on active duty as a radio technician, and was stationed in Korea for a time before being honorably discharged. Though his time in the military was brief, it was an impactful experience that inspired him to be a life-long patriot and advocate for his fellow veterans.
David was working as a maintenance man at the Chena Hot Springs Resort near Fairbanks, Alaska in 1978 when he met Darcy Klugman, who would be the mother of his three children. The couple married in 1981 and moved to Two Rivers, where David purchased ten acres of land with aspirations of building his own home.
Risha, the first-born daughter, came home to the first 16X20 little cabin in the woods, with no running water, no electricity, and plastic windows. Daughter MaKenzie followed, while David expanded to another 16X20 cabin, this time adding a loft and electricity, with real glass windows, but no indoor bathroom. When a third child was on the way, David took the giant step of a real expansion. He planned and built a beautiful 30X40 log home. David stacked every log, working tirelessly to meet deadlines before the dark Alaskan winter arrived. By the time his son Gavin was born, the home was complete, with conveniences like a large wood stove, and a flushable toilet to make life sweet. David loved living off the land, homeschooling his kids, and he found much gratitude in growing a huge vegetable garden, raising chickens and turkeys, and hunting moose, caribou, grizzly bear, and other Alaskan game.
David and family moved to Minnesota in 1995. He and Darcy later divorced, but remained good friends and dedicated themselves to amicable co-parenting.
Throughout his life, David held a variety of professions, including, but not limited to, working on the Alaskan pipeline, the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska, and herding reindeer across the Seward Peninsula. He was also a mechanic, construction worker, goldminer, general contractor, and pub proprietor, eventually finding his longest-term niche in energy conservation consulting. It was through one such consulting job where a mutual friend introduced David to Linda Treleven, where he found love again. They married in 2004, building a life in Eden Prairie, and shared a fondness for classic cars, Friday night movies, and art festivals in the Twin Cities. He was a faithful husband and family man, and was a dedicated caregiver for his father-in-law, Donald Hohnberger, until Don's death in 2013. In 2014, after David and Linda both retired, they moved to Rushford to spend their golden years.
David's hobbies included studying God's word, metal detecting, home improvement and other "tinkering," researching any topic he became curious about, and noticing the beauty in all of his surroundings at any given time. Together, David and Linda enjoyed gardening, camping, hiking with their dog Harpo, tricycling, traveling in their RV, and watching the sun rise, but mostly (and this is the most important of all), just loving on one another and being together.
David was a great husband, father, provider, friend, and most notably, a strong spiritual leader. Anyone who knew him would hear him proclaim that becoming a father forever changed his life, and that's what ultimately drove him to walk in faith and follow Jesus Christ. He'll be remembered as a strong, kind soul who would go out of his way to help anyone in need.
David was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred; father, Richard; brothers, Jeff and William; and sister, Susan. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda; his children, Risha (Damien), MaKenzie (Matt), and Gavin (Stacy); grandchildren, Taliah, Dean, Taitum, Jovana, Keagan, Cameron, and Gabriel; sisters, Sharon and Debbie; brother, Bruce; the mother of his children, Darcy; and biological father and friend, Delmond.
Funeral services for David will be held at Root River Community Church on Tuesday, December 7th, at 10:00 am CST.
