Barry Nelson - January 26, 1938 - April 03, 2022

Departed: 04/03/2022 (Winona)
Obituary Preview: Barry Alfred Nelson, 84, passed away on April 3,2022 at his home beside the Mississippi River in Homer, MN. with the loving care of hospice and his family supporting his journey. Barry found great comfort watching his eagle pair construct their home in the giant cottonwood outside his window, and only weeks ago lay eggs for their future family. Barry shared his eagles with hospice workers, Tara and all who visited him these last few months. His smile widened each day when his youngest grandson visited almost daily. Barry had one request that he be able to live out his days on the river and his family worked together to make this happen. Barry embraced life in all ways. He was a creator, a builder, a traveler, a writer of short stories, a reader of all things, an outdoorsman, a bowler, a championship Sheepshead card player, a teacher, a survivor, a family man and a friend. He loved the arts and took many trips to Broadway shows in Chicago. He especially loved Phantom of the Opera. In recent years, Barry enjoyed many fishing adventures with Dan Picha and friends. If there was a story to tell, you would want to hear it first from Barry. Throughout his life Barry built things. As a kid in junior high he built a dinghy in his basement for his exploration of the Mississippi backwaters. Only through careful calculations and measurements was he able to get it up the steps and out the door. After graduating from Winona Senior High in 1955, he hitchhiked with a buddy to Seattle and worked as a machinist for Boeing Aviation, building wings for B52's. After graduation from Winona State in 1960, he taught Industrial Arts in Baltimore, Maryland. Having satiated his desire to teach in inner city schools, Barry returned to WSU, earned his Master's and completed his 32 year teaching career at G-E-T Public Schools as a Shop and Vocational Building Trades teacher. During these years, Barry's students built everything from a basic garage, to houses, portable classrooms, duplexes, gazebos and can-crackers (before the plastic version was invented). The program was developed in partnership with local lumber yards, tradesmen and the school district. He built from scratch two homes for his family in his lifetime and refurbished his son's home near Madison, WI, while single handedly babysitting his grandson and namesake. Barry served multiple terms on the Winona City Council in the '60's and 70's. Major construction projects facing the city at that time were obtaining state and federal funding for the dike system which protects the city from devastating flooding, and the upgrading of the city sewer and sanitation system. During this time the council and Mayor Norm Indall changed the city charter and management system from a "strong mayor" to a city manager. The council at that time directed the building of the Central Garage and construction of the Winona County Law Enforcement Center where his own son would work one day.For several years Barry participated in Central Methodist's volunteer youth group to rehabilitate homes in areas of Appalachia and in Russia through an international agency. These experiences impacted him so much and he returned as a tourist and dreamed of more trips to Russia. Barry and his wife Jeanne, married 52 years, loved the adventure of traveling. In the 1970's they drove and camped their way from Winona to Acapulco, Mexico, and as the years went by they expanded their travels across the globe. Gramps took great joy in taking his grandsons on adventures and each grandson was given a special trip to Europe. Africa was a favorite destination: Okavangee Delta, the Skeleton Coast of Namibia, the Atlas Mountains of Tunisia, the Nile, and South Africa. Barry was currently a member of the Hiawatha Investment Club and the Homer Methodist Church. Barry was born on January 26, 1938 to Nora (Dorn) and Barry Arthur Nelson and in 1970 he married Jeanne Nelson. (And, no, they were not first cousins!). He is survived by his wife Jeanne, son Christopher (Michelle), grandsons Barry C. (Breanna) Nelson and Garrett Nelson; brother Jerry (Faye) Nelson of LaCrescent, sister Karen (Joe) Barcus of Grand Junction, CO, sister-in-law Jannan (Richard) Slabaugh of Spokane, and brother-in-law Dwayne Nelson of Stillwater and many nieces, nephews and cousins, along with a special cousin Helen Jahnke of Naperville. Also, numbers 1, 2 and 3 at Altra Bank, and his faithful dog friend, Merle. Preceding Barry in death are his parents, his mother/father-in-law Fern and Henry Nelson, brother-in-law Ronald Nelson, nephew Henry Nelson and sister-in-law Jeanette Nelson. A gathering of friends will be held on Thursday, April 7 at Hoff Funeral Home, 3480 Service Drive, Goodview from 11am to 1pm with pastor Tori offering prayer. To honor Barry's commitment to teaching young students hands-on learning of industrial technology, the family requests that memorials be directed toward the REACH and AVID programs and mailed to: Foundation for Winona Area Public Schools, 1570 Homer Road, Winona, MN 55987. And in closing, Barry would say: Booga booga! How's your old "tomata?"

Marcia Sobeck - September 02, 1965 - March 08, 2022

Departed: 03/08/2022 (Winona)
Obituary Preview: Marcia Sobeck, age 56 of Rochester and formerly of Winona, died unexpectedly on March 8th, 2022 at her home. Marcia was born on September 2nd, 1965 in Winona, MN to Eugene and Arlene (Peterson) Sobeck. Marcia was blessed with three children (Bradley and Chelsea, 1991; and Olivia, 1996) and three grandchildren (Jayden, 2014; Theodore, 2016; and Joel, 2019) with another grandchild on the way in April. She worked very hard at making sure her children felt loved with their own unique special bonds. Her children share precious memories with her from childhood (especially her support for snowmobile racing trips, softball tournaments, and camping adventures) and from their adult lives while creating their own families. Her grandchildren brought her immense joy and she made great efforts to be present in their lives. She was incredibly proud of each of her children and always talked about wanting to be an even better grandma than she was a mom. Marcia received her degree of Occupational Proficiency in Practical Nursing on June 21st, 1984 from the Winona Area Technical Institute. She was primarily a Psychiatric LPN throughout her career and always went the extra mile to help those in need. Anyone who worked with Marcia would agree she was caring, compassionate, and reliable. Marcia's energetic personality always impacted those around her in a positive way. Marcia enjoyed music and specifically The Rolling Stones ever since childhood. Attending music concerts was something she enjoyed with friends, specifically her best friend Kathy Matzke. Marcia was also an avid pool player and was known to be highly skilled to those around her in pool leagues. Riding her Harley Davidson motorcycle was a source of fun being on the open road and putting her Harley Davidson clothes shopping habit to good use. Another source of fun for her was traveling to warmer climates such as the Caribbean especially either all-inclusive resorts or cruises. A few words about Marcia's character would touch on how adventurous and imaginative she was as well as being a resilient woman. One of Marcia's favorite quotes was "behind every successful woman is herself." This was something she strived for and started to build for herself with her new home in Rochester. Marcia will remain in the hearts of her mother, Arlene Sobeck; children, Bradley Cierzan (Linnea Cierzan), Chelsea Goldblatt (Phillip Goldblatt), Olivia Hall (Jeremiah Hall); grandchildren, Theodore and Joel Goldblatt, Jayden Hall and soon to be Baby Boy Hall; siblings, Gary and Jim Sobeck (and their families). Marcia had caring, gregarious friends in her work, among her pool league, and from different stages in her life, and her family appreciates the love you all showed her. Marcia was preceded in death by her father Eugene Sobeck. A service to celebrate Marcia's life will be held at 3pm on Saturday, March 19th, 2022 at the Hoff Celebration of Life Center, 3480 Service Dr, Goodview, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Hoff Celebration of Life Center - Goodview, is assisting the family with arrangements. The service will be lived streamed. For attire, the family requests you wear anything comfortable though Marcia would appreciate anything representative of The Rolling Stones, Harley Davidson, pool league, or elephants (her favorite animal). Additionally, flowers are welcome and after the service, the family plans to donate most flowers to Arlene's assisted living and the neighboring nursing home facility. Here is the link to watch the Live Stream for Marcia's Memorial Service - https://view.oneroomstreaming.com/authorise.php?k=1647306526172552

John Theile - September 22, 1936 - February 16, 2022

Departed: 02/16/2022 (Winona)
Obituary Preview: John Robert "Bob" Theile was born in Centerville, Iowa on September 22, 1936. He attended Iowa State for Business Administration, and the University of Missouri for a masters in Accounting. He worked in Kansas City, Dallas, Beltsville, Witchita, LaCrosse, Shakopee, and finally, Winona, where he lived most of his life. While we could list his work accomplishments here, that's not what his life was about. For anyone who knew Bob, you'd know he loved football (he got to watch one last Superbowl before he died), fishing, and family. And travel--he and his wife of 44 years, Karen, traveled to 24 countries and 40 states over a 20-year time period. When the kids were home, he loved to have a nice dinner, drink wine, laugh, and tell stories. Bob was a great story-teller, and he had so many fascinating ones--from "accidentally" stabbing his older brother, Harry, in the hand with a knife while playing mumbly peg, to meeting the infamous Jack Ruby and being present in Dallas when JFK was shot. Every summer at our family reunion, Bob would manage a washer tournament, and he was almost impossible to beat! He played softball until he was 45, after which he switched to golf, loved Trivia, and spent his summers fishing the tendrils of the Mississippi River. He loved to give us kids the shivers by reciting "The Cremation of Sam McGee" around the campfire, and we loved to hear him sing Kingston Trio songs in his beautiful bass voice. He had a rather dark sense of humor sometimes, and would probably want us to write something on his Facebook page about "finally kicking the can"--but we couldn't do it. Like most of us, Bob could be a "cantankerous old poop" on the outside sometimes, but inwardly, he was the best teddy bear ever, as those who worked with him and called him husband and Dad, brother, uncle, and friend, can attest. Bob is survived by his family and friends who loved him: his wife, Karen Theile, his six children: Libby (Raymore, MO) , J.T. (Charleston, SC), Allison (Witchita, KS), Michelle (Bemidji, MN), Christine (Denver, CO), and Kelly (Sturgeon Bay, WI), his thirteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, his deceased brother Harry's wife Fran, and his four nieces. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, February 24 at 4 pm. at the Elk's Club in Winona, MN. We'd love to see you; come with your favorite story about Bob.
