He also loved sports, mostly football and baseball. You could always find him watching a game on television if he wasn't outside cleaning fish or deer. Up until his illness, people would often stop him on the street and reminisce about his coaching days. Jim was also quite the bowler. He bowled for 50-plus years and loved the sport, in fact, he was a member of the "700 Club". Jim was a great storyteller and told many stories and jokes.

She was born in Baton Rouge on May 26, 1928 to her parents Henry Eugene Kleinpeter Sr. and Clara Ellen Blaize Kleinpeter.
Madelyn Gaspar is survived by her loving sister, Patricia Kleinpeter Odom of Baton Rouge and her beloved daughters, Mary Reeves, Ann Wilson, Cathy Medica and Joan Haase as well as sons-in-law, Jeff Reeves, Tom Wilson, Paul Medica, Jr. and Donald Haase.
Known as MawMaw and Moochie, she loved her grandchildren, Grace Wilson Birch and her husband Christian, Bart Wilson and his fiancé Bailey, Paul Medica III and his wife Lindsey, Katie Medica and her husband Zach, Matthew Haase and his wife Sarah, Stephen Haase and Jennifer Haase. Later in life she earned the nickname G.G. when she became a proud great-grandmother to Pearl Blaize Birch.
Madelyn was preceded in death by her adoring husband of 64 years, Loyd Joseph Gaspar, her brother, Henry Eugene Kleinpeter Jr. and her twin sister Marjorie.
She was a member of St. Rita's Church for many years. Most in the community also remember Mrs. Gaspar as a third-grade teacher at Mabel Brasher and W.O. Hall Elementary Schools for 25 years.
Mrs. Gaspar graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Baton Rouge and she earned her university degrees at LSU in Baton Rouge and Louisiana College in Pineville.
The Gaspars moved their young family to Alexandria, Louisiana in 1961, raised their girls, and have resided there ever since.
Her passions were many, but she especially loved to spend time walking the beach, collecting shells and nautical treasures, gardening and hosting family at their summer camp on Rutherford Beach in Cameron Parish. Madelyn loved decorating and cooking for holidays. Her Spinach Madeleine recipe was so good, her grandchildren thought she had invented the dish herself. She was also an incredible seamstress, making beautiful dresses with a meticulous eye for pattern placement. In her later years, she used those skills to gift the family with heirloom baby blankets.
In her retirement, Madelyn loved spending time with her daughters and grandchildren, sewing, reading, doting on her kitty cats and watching anything LSU. Once at a doctor's appointment, she couldn't quite remember who the President of the United States was, but she immediately and proudly knew that the LSU's Women's Basketball Coach was Kim Mulkey and her team had just won the National Championship.
The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Michael Buck and Compassionate Care Hospice, especially Latisha White, Laura Hagan, and Allison Young who also cared for her husband, Joseph. Madelyn and the entire family are also most appreciative of the devoted care given to her by her eldest daughter, Mary.
Her grandsons, son-in-law, and family friend will serve as pallbearers.

Phyllis Edgar Sayes - June 16, 1925 - April 02, 2024

Departed: 04/02/2024 (Alexandria)
Obituary Preview: Phyllis Edgar Sayes passed away peacefully on April 2, 2024, surrounded by her family, after a remarkable 98 years of life blessed with adventure, achievement, health, humor and—above all—love.
She was born on June 16, 1925, in Canora, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Stanley Howard Edgar and Marion Millar Edgar, the second of four siblings. As a child, Phyllis learned to play the piano, ice skated, played hockey, and enjoyed all subjects in school, but especially math. Upon graduation as a Clinical Technician from the School of Medical Sciences, University of Saskatchewan in 1947, Phyllis moved to the United States, where she began her career as a medical technologist. She first worked in Oregon, and then in San Antonio, TX, where she met her husband, Dwight "Petie" Sayes, who was stationed there in the Air Force. Petie brought Phyllis to his hometown of Alexandria, LA in 1953, where they married and spent the next 70 years building a beautiful life rooted in strong Christian faith, hard work, and discipline, and filled with laughter and enjoyment of the simple, everyday moments that became cherished memories.
Phyllis was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church and lived true to the oath of supporting the church with her prayers, presence, gifts, and service. For many years, she could be found in the front of the church during worship, singing joyfully to the Lord in the choir. She was part of the United Methodist Women and served as recording secretary on the UMW Administrative Board for decades. Phyllis was recognized for a Lifetime of Christian Service to Trinity in 2014. Phyllis deeply loved and trusted in the Lord and hungered to know him better, dedicating herself to weekly Bible studies until her final days. Her abiding faith was a shining example for her family, undergirding them even now in her absence.
College-educated and miles from her birthplace in a foreign country until she gained her U.S. citizenship in the mid-90s – Phyllis was a woman ahead of her time. She had a successful career at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital for more than 30 years, earning the honor of Medical Technologist of the Year in 1985. She was articulate and well-read; rarely stumped by the crossword or word jumble in the daily newspaper and was likewise proud of her daily low Wordle scores in recent years. She was elegant and refined but sharp-witted with a wry sense of humor.
She could also get her hands dirty. Phyllis and Petie would spend many weekends at their Effie, LA “place in the country,” tending their garden of purple hull peas, sweet corn, cucumbers, and tomatoes; and she could bring the farm to table with perfection. The Sayes family shared countless meals prepared by Phyllis, or “Momo,” as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her signature dishes have become a defining part of tradition that will be passed down for generations.
Among her other many talents, through which she graciously served her family, Momo was an excellent seamstress. She made clothes for her children and later sewed special outfits for her grandchildren that are now heirloom pieces worn by her great-grandchildren. She never missed milestone occasions, said yes to invitations for travel with family, and leaned into the opportunities for fun. She loved the LSU Tigers, followed the football and baseball teams religiously, and proudly wore her purple and gold. She was a steady, wise voice of reason; a comforting presence; a guiding light of goodness. In the eyes of her adoring family, none could rival Phyllis as a dedicated wife to Petie, Mama to her four children, and a beloved Momo to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her only greater achievement was that of good and faithful servant to the Lord, as beautifully illustrated by the handwritten verse in the front of her Bible:
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.” Hebrews 11:1.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Dwight “Petie” Sayes; her children, Dawna Sayes Guzak (Rob), Warren Edgar Sayes (Karen), Susan Sayes Benoit (Robert), and Tracy Sayes Van Hart (Jim); grandchildren, Erin Sayes Kenny (Eric), Cameron Sayes, Maxie Benoit, Matthew Guzak, Kristin Guzak, Shelby Pruitt (Ryan), and Chloe Van Hart; great grandchildren, Brooks Kenny and James Maxwell “Max” Kenny; brother, Grant Edgar; and a host of other family members and friends.
Her parents; sisters, Jean Edgar Peterson and Tannis Edgar Walters; mother-in-law, Eunice Estelle Sayes, and father-in-law, Kirby Zenus Sayes; and grandson, Kirby Benoit, preceded her in death.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Rachael Sylvester and Courtney Hargroder, and all other BrightCare Homecare staff, as well as Hospice of Acadiana, who assisted in caring for Phyllis so lovingly and dutifully during the past year, and in her final days.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at the public viewing scheduled for April 6, 2024, at Hixson Brothers in Alexandria, starting at 11:00 am. A funeral service to honor and celebrate Phyllis's life will take place in The Chapel of Hixson Brothers, Alexandria, at 1:00 pm, with the Reverend Bill Lovell officiating. Following the service, Phyllis will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Ball.

Obituary Preview: A celebration of life service for Richard Paul Bryant will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Kingsville Baptist Church with Pastor Bryan Rhodes officiating. Visitation will precede the service from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the church. Paul, 78, of Ball, LA passed from this earthly life to eternal life peacefully, on Friday, March 29, 2024, at home. It was Good Friday!
First and foremost, Paul loved and cherished his wife, Sandy Bryant. In the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s while a student at Golden Gate Baptist Seminary in the San Francisco Bay Area, Paul and other on-fire young men started ministry houses for the hundreds of young people leaving the drug culture and coming to Christ in the Haight-Ashbury. He also was instrumental in starting a church in Marin County where this young firebrand preacher was pastoring and baptizing many hippies. He moved his young family to Kailua, HI and opened a futon store with his late wife, Lana, that served many local families living on O’ahu. His advertising campaign consisted of his pseudo character “Dr. Futon Duck.” He had a gracious open-door policy. In Hawaii, he carried on his California tradition of restoring lives and hearts in both his home and business. His other passions included riding his motorcycle, boating, golfing, loving on his kids, and always sharing the Gospel. After moving to central Louisiana, he added bicycle riding to his outdoor interests, along with yardwork. He was a fervent reader, with his favorite topic being theology and history. Paul was an elder at Grace, where he taught Sunday School and hosted many prayer meetings in his home. His outgoing nature and personality made him a social butterfly, effortlessly connecting with those around him – he never met a stranger. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Guess and Annabelle Williams Bryant, late wife, Lana Bryant, younger sister, Lydia Ann Curtis, who died just two weeks before Paul. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sandy Barger Bryant; son, Joshua David Bryant; daughters, Tabitha Elizabeth Huffman (Jeremy Curtis Huffman), Charity Anne Fincher, and Erin Michelle Guidry (Derrick Juston Guidry); step-sons, Shawn Frederick Barger (Lymaris), Shannon Wilmot Barger (Cammy Hawn); sister, Hattie Ruth Bryant (Bruce Camber); grandchildren, Spencer Bryant (Claudia), Fielding Bryant (Alyssa), Annalise Bryant, Olivia Huffman, Noah Huffman, Ford Fincher, Liberty Fincher, Ireland Guidry, Salem Guidry, Eden Guidry, Maya Barger, Owen Barger, Tyler Barger (Victoria), Ashton Barger; and great-grandchildren, August Bryant and Amelia Bryant
