CAROLYN R. FARLEY - October 04, 1950 - February 18, 2024

Departed: 02/18/2024 (Haddonfield)
Obituary Preview: On February 18, 2024, Carolyn R. (nee Goodale) of Voorhees NJ age 73 yrs. Loving mother to Joanne Tyson (Scott), Stephanie McCafferty (Mike) and Monica Schmidt (Michael) all of Voorhees, NJ. Very loving grandmother to Danielle and Lindsey Tyson, Brenden, Mark and Kevin McCafferty and Jason, Allison Schmidt, and Raelyn Smith. 3 Great Grandchildren, Brayden, Bailey, and Benjamin. Predeceased by her parents and sisters Minott R. Goodale and Jane Smith Goodale, Nancy Krewson, Patti Goodale and Janet Blair. Caroln Farley is sorely missed already!
Carolyn grew up in Windsor and Meriden Connecticut with her amazing parents, and three sisters whom all were very close, no matter whom moved where they always found themselves back living close together.
Second one to leave the nest, but on the back of a motorcycle. Once falling in love she found herself putting roots down in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. They bought a house on Memphis street where she lived until moving to Voorhees New Jersey. She attended beauty school and cut hair for years before working as a head teller at Provident National Bank, now known as as PNC Bank where she retired from. Her co-workers became family as did her neighbor, Carol. They both worked at the bank each had 3 kids which they raised by themselves. Carolyn with 3 girls and Carol with 3 boys, they would sit on the step and chat or have tea together. And the families are very important to each other. She kept in touch with her life long friends from Connecticut as well. Kathy and Karen
Karen and Carolyn have the best stories of a wonderful childhood and were still so happy to talk and visit to the end.
Her best best friend was her sister Nancy. They spoke every day and shared recipes, hobbies and all the ups & downs of life. They got together at least monthly and enjoyed each other. They both adored their dogs and spoiled them! It was devastating to loose her and she missed her every day.
Carolyn’s passion though, was her family. Doted on each of them and taught them everything she knew. A more generous person does not exist. SHE is the epitome of Unconditional love! Every grandchild was treated like her first but she had a unique relationship with each of them. As with us, her children. Her hobbies were sewing, cooking, scrapbooking and throwing wonderful parties. She was a diehard fan of the Phillies and Flyers. And enjoyed watching them with her family & friends. She was so grateful to have amazing son in laws. She was happy for us and proud of them! She couldn’t of wished for better partners for us or her grandchildren! Mike, Scott and Michael have always been so good to her even though we couldn’t help her with anything! She was so strong, the strongest woman I know. She was independent and proud. Beautiful and loving. Funny, kind, so smart and modest. Except for her self proclaimed genius. She invented so many things to make life easier! A wonderful homemaker even with a full time job. A wonderful person and beautiful inside and out. Spunky and a firecracker- if she thought it she told you and could debate with the best of them. We watched her as she aged gracefully and were ALL by her side at the end. May she rest in eternal peace!
Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation Saturday February 24th 11AM to 12 noon at the HINSKI-TOMLINSON FUNERAL HOME 81 Haddon Ave. Haddonfield, NJ. Services of her life will be celebrated at 12 noon. Interment is Private.

JOHN A. MARCHESANI MD - December 15, 1929 - January 03, 2024

Departed: 01/03/2024 (Haddonfield)
Obituary Preview: On January 3, 2024, Dr. John A. Marchesani, MD of Haddonfield, NJ age 94 yrs. Beloved husband of Marie J. (nee DeVaro). Loving father to Marie Meehan (Mark) of Harleysville PA, Carolyn of Downingtown PA, Thomas (Courtney) of Anchorage AK, Lawrence (Carla and the late Mary Ann) of Newark DE, the Late Diane, and the Late John; grandfather to Mark (Laura), Cristin, and Joseph Meehan, Stephen and Zachary Weber, Molly, Katie, Luca, Jacob, and Maia, and Bailey (Nelson) Fender; and great grandfather to Gianna and Sophia Meehan. Brother to Jane McCullen Collingswood NJ, Joan Eisenhardt
Barrington NJ, Janet of Newburgh NY, and the late Joseph. John was born to John and Jane Marchesani December 15, 1929, in Chester, PA, the oldest of five children (John, Jane, Joe, Joan, and Janet). Young John apprenticed in his father’s tailor shop, acquiring skills that would elevate a future, very different profession. At 12 he contracted rheumatic fever and spent months indoors. He passed languid hours reading the dictionary and learning piano. He returned to health with an appreciation for medicine and an affinity for crossword puzzles, both of which he
carried forward. John worked at his father’s store (the “sweat shop”) through high school and into college. Studious and sharp, he earned high marks at Camden Catholic HS (Class of ’47) and enrolled in LaSalle College (Class of ’51), where he developed a love of Big 5 basketball while earning a BA in biology. The summer after graduation, his family vacationed at the Jersey shore, renting the downstairs of a Margate duplex. The family upstairs had a 19-yr old daughter who would become his wife. John invited Marie DeVaro to the Steel Pier in Atlantic City where they danced to Because of You. It would become their song. They would dance to it again at their wedding and sing snippets to each other often over their subsequent 72+
years. Returning home John enrolled in Jefferson Medical College, studying and working in the shop.
Fate intervened again when Marie spotted John on the bus she took to work. Life accelerated from there. John and Marie married in 1954. Over the next 3 years he graduated from medical school, completed the inaugural internship at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, and spent 2 yrs in the army in Virginia as Base Surgeon General. He and Marie also had their first three children (Diane, John, Marie). Discharged in ’59, the family returned to NJ and he opened a pediatrics practice out of their new home with Marie doing his accounting. John gained a reputation as a kind and sensitive pediatrician. He was also an intuitive diagnostician who could resolve complex symptoms in children too small to describe what they felt. Drawing on his early apprenticeship, he also was known for his precise and sturdy sutures. Between ’61 and ’64 the couple welcomed three more children (Carolyn, Thomas, and Lawrence). In 1971, John and Marie packed their Country Squire wagon with six kids to realize his
dream to take his family across country and back. John was a man of service, deep faith, and family. He volunteered his time to the causes he valued. He was Chairman of the Pediatrics Department at West Jersey (now Virtua) Hospital for 12 years and earned their lifetime achievement award in 2004. He was the first two-term President of the Haddonfield Lions Club and initiated a program for in-school amblyopia testing. He was a 4 th Degree Knight of Columbus, their highest rank, and a Eucharistic Minister. After retiring from private practice,
he taught at Jefferson Medical University 1 day a week for 5 years. John loved fishing the trout streams of PA, NY, and VT. He taught all his children and grandchildren the art, which meant they got to fish while he untangled line and dislodged snagged lures. He crafted
intricate model railroad layouts. He enjoyed bridge, chess, and crosswords, adding a sudoku phase later. He and Marie held friendly but spirited contests of Scrabble and gin rummy. He rediscovered golf, getting closer to shooting his age with each passing year. He and Marie traveled to San Francisco and Bermuda, favorites of theirs. In Italy, they stopped in Chieti, the town his father emigrated from in the early 1900s. Above all, John loved his family. As he and Marie transitioned to grandparenthood, they traveled ceaselessly around the tri-state area to share their grandchildren’s pursuits, attending basketball games, music recitals, academic competitions, and graduations. He and Marie shared a rare love. Each saying to the other, “You’re the best thing that ever happened to me.” Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation Tuesday January 9, 2024, 9:30 to 11 AM at Holy Eucharist Church 344 Kresson Rd. Cherry Hill, NJ. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11AM. Interment

JAMES W. WEBER - February 18, 1939 - November 21, 2023

Departed: 11/21/2023 (Haddonfield)
Obituary Preview: James (aka Jim aka Cowboy) Weber, 84 of Haddonfield, NJ, November 21. Jim began working for RCA as an Electrical Engineer in Camden, NJ in 1966. He was involved in the Apollo moonshot, or at least that’s what he always said, and usually his stories had a kernel of truth. He retired after 40 years as a leading expert on trailing edge technology.
Jim’s devoted wife, Toni, of over 50 years is credited with keeping him sober at most important events, out of prison, and alive for far longer than anyone would have thought. They enjoyed many adventures together, traveling the world, hiking the Appalachian trail, and tromping through Hopkins Pond.
He was a loving father of three daughters, Christy, Nicole, and Alicia, whom he supported in pursuing higher education, encouraged to have full careers, and taught not to take any crap. He was the quintessential fun dad, letting his daughters play A-Team by jumping out of his moving van and turning a blind eye to missing booze.
He was also a spirited “pop pop” to Alex, Julia, Gio, Elsa, and Ben, for whom he performed unconvincing magic tricks, constructed precarious zip lines, hid money in leaf piles, told fantastical stories, and taught to make their own fun. Jim loved kids and kids loved him.
Jim referred to himself as a “baltimoron” and spent his early years raising hell in Baltimore with co-conspirator older brother Joe (whom he called “hosse” for reasons lost to time), and little brother Robert. He loved to return each year to crash the St Patrick’s Day 5k with family and to visit the Delaware shore.
Jim loved a party; made a mean Stromboli; would give you the shirt off his back; welcomed everyone into his home; and never met a room/elevator/train car he couldn’t lighten up with a joke or two. He was absolutely full of life until he wasn’t. He would love for you to raise a glass, tell a tall tale, and toast him on his journey to the other side. Cheers Jim.

KATHY BURMASTER - December 08, 1950 - October 08, 2023

Departed: 10/08/2023 (Haddonfield)
Obituary Preview: Kathy Burmaster, beloved wife, mother, nana, and friend died unexpectedly on October 8, 2023 while traveling with her husband in Germany. Kathy is survived by her husband John Burmaster, her children, Kate (Sophie Howelle) and Lauren (David Stone-Resneck), her grandchild, Hugo Stone, and her siblings, Diane Knapp, Duane and Jon Dixon.
Born in Sharon, Pa. on December 8, 1950 to Jay and Emma Dixon, Kathy graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Gettysburg College where her passion for teaching and art flourished. After an initial year teaching Spanish, culminating in a class trip to Spain, she fell in love with the country and moved to Madrid the following year. She tried many different jobs, including teaching Engish, dubbing movies, being a Winston cigarette girl and doing administrative work for an American company. She took a risk going on a blind date with a fellow American living abroad, John. Upon returning to the US, Kathy began a successful career in international lending with PNC Bank, married John and earned her MBA from University of Pittsburgh.
Her next adventure, motherhood, came with twice the joy and double the challenge when she gave birth to twins in 1986. Kathy was a hands-on mother, whether it was volunteering with Girl Scouts, sewing the best Halloween costumes, serving on the Board of Education or spending every weekend on the sidelines of her daughter's activities. She cultivated in them a love of learning and dedication to service.
A lifelong learner herself, Kathy devoted herself to the study of art in her retirement. She became a docent at the Barnes Foundation, garnering an impressive knowledge of the collection. She and her husband shared a passion for travel, and Kathy sought out art collections to explore wherever they went. She did this all while tirelessly battling a rare form of papillary thyroid cancer, a battle she fought for a decade. The dauntlessness and courage she’d shown all her life powered her onward and inspired her to help lead a global support network for others with the same diagnosis.
Kathy’s journey was nothing short of exceptional and her loss is one that we can not fully comprehend. Her giving nature, mischievous spirit, and endless kindness will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who knew her. Her family and community will forever carry on her joy of living life to its fullest and her warrior spirit.

PATSY H. VOGDES - April 20, 1935 - June 25, 2023

Departed: 06/25/2023 (Haddonfield)
Obituary Preview: On June 25, 2023, Patsy H. Vogdes (nee Henneberger), passed away peacefully, surrounded by her immediate family. She was 88. Beloved wife of the late Judson F. Vogdes, III (Jud), loving mother of Elizabeth V. Papadopoulos of Brooklyn, NY, Victoria V. Firth (Simon) of Philadelphia, PA, and Anthony J. Vogdes (Becky) of
Philadelphia, PA and Brigantine, NJ; loving grandmother of Charles A.
Papadopoulos and Eli J. Vogdes. Pat, as she was known by friends and family, grew up in Waynesboro PA and Gloucester NJ. After a year studying at Philadelphia College of the Arts, she worked at the Saturday Evening Post in Philadelphia, first in the secretarial pool, then landing a position as secretary to the short story editor. It was during this time she met Jud and left the workforce to start a family. They began their young family in West Philadelphia, then moved briefly to Erlton, NJ, finally settling in
Haddonfield, NJ. Pat was a longtime resident of Haddonfield and in addition to raising three kids and working as a homemaker she volunteered her time with numerous civic groups and participated in several social groups. She was passionate about giving
back to her community and in the process made life-long friends. Her love of Broadway and theater led her to join Camden County Music Crafters and later Haddonfield Plays and Players where she designed sets and was Stage Manager for countless productions. Her creativity, eye for design, and love of theater influenced everything she did. Whether it was creating sets for school plays, designing displays for various organizations, hosting cast parties, throwing kiddie and grown-up themed birthday parties, or her annual get togethers, Pat
held the most imaginative events. For over forty years Pat was a member of the Haddonfield Celebrations Association, serving as president for much of that time. Pat utilized her skills of “putting on a show” by organizing the town’s Fourth of July and Halloween events. The colorful parades, the fireworks displays, the competitions for best floats, and all around festive vibe brought the town together in good-natured
holiday spirit. When her children were a bit older, Pat took a part-time job as Director of the Adult School. For a decade she organized schedules, arranged the printing of the brochure, and came up with unique and relevant classes that enriched the lives of many Haddonfield residents as well as others in the area. Her displays advertising
the season’s classes were always fun and creative. Other organizations in which Pat was involved include Crime Watch, The Girl Scouts, Friends of the Library, The Haddonfield Historical Society, Central School
and Middle School HSA, Questers, and the Haddonfield Democratic Club. As if community service didn’t keep Pat busy enough, she was involved in several social groups. “The Bag Ladies” would meet regularly to work on crafts, share stories, chat, laugh, and generally have a great time. Weekends away with the Poconos gang were common every Fall. Pat also enjoyed taking cooking classes at the home of a friend where she learned many wonderful recipes, which her
children and husband regularly got to sample. Pat also had a lot of hobbies, most notably reading – she was a voracious reader, especially of mysteries. She loved to see plays and musicals, not only in the local Philadelphia theaters, but she and Jud would also take the kids to shows on Broadway in New York City. Movies were also a passion. For many years she and a friend would go weekly to see a new film. Her Oscar Parties each year were fun, but no one saw as many films as Pat! She loved entertaining in general, from cast parties following the close of a play, to the porch party for the 4 th of July parade judges, and her Christmas Eve open house was an annual event everyone looked
forward to. Pat was also a huge fan of the Philadelphia Phillies. She never missed a game on tv and was grateful to catch many of them live. She had fond memories of her father taking her as a young girl, and then later in life being treated to the sky box
many times. Pat had a deep affection for cats, particularly calicos. Her cat Isadora was her latest furry friend, whom she adored dearly. Izzy now resides in Brooklyn, NY. Pat
was also crazy about goats as many knew from her email “handle”. Her family will miss Pat’s laughter and quick wit, her stories and experiences, and her love and support for her children’s endeavors no matter what and where it took them. Her community will remember her as one of the most generous and
involved residents, as she truly loved her hometown. At the request of the family, services will be held privately. Contributions in Pat’s memory may be made to Interfaith Caregivers, PO Box 186, Haddonfield, NJ 08033; Samaritan’s Gift Processing Center, PO Box 71425, Philadelphia, PA 19176-

DANIEL P. TOMPKINS - February 16, 1940 - June 10, 2023

Departed: 06/10/2023 (Haddonfield)
Obituary Preview: Daniel Patchin Tompkins February 16, 1940 – June 10, 2023 Daniel P. Tompkins, age 83, passed away at his Cherry Hill NJ home on June 10, 2023, surrounded by his loving family: his beloved wife Drew Humphries of Cherry Hill, NJ, his wonderful daughter Victoria Tompkins, her partner Daniel Jin, his cherished grandson Tristen Daniel Jin of Philadelphia and his much-loved sister Rev. Victoria Byrne of Nova
Scotia, Canada.
Dan Tompkins grew up in Montclair NJ, earned his BA at Dartmouth College and his Ph.D. in classics at Yale University. He taught classics at Wesleyan, Swarthmore, and Temple University where he built the classics department. He was recognized by his peers for
excellence in teaching, curriculum development, and mentoring young scholars. His scholarship on Thucydides shed light on the role of language in studying ancient Greek sources. His recent work on Moses Finley-a classist who changed the way ancient Greece was studied- demonstrated the importance of understanding the full intellectual context in
which historians work. Dan loved language. His publications include an article on poet Wallace Stevens. In daily
life, he was witty, linguistically playful, and quick to find le bon mot. Dan ran cross-country track in high school and college. As a college student, he paddled a canoe down the Connecticut river from Hanover NH to the sea. In later life he became an avid cyclist who rode with good friends in the mid-Atlantic and New England regions and through the Italian Dolomites and Tuscan Hill towns. He crashed occasionally-like
all cyclists-and told a story about nearly colliding with a black bear in Vermont. He led a politically engaged life. He hunkered down with journalists in a Cyprus hotel when Turkey invaded the island in the 1970s and later told friends that the journalists
were reckless, drunken but extremely brave in returning to the frontline day after day. He joined other Greeks in opposing the military junta that had taken over their country in the 1970s. More recently Dan worked with local Macedonian academics to put forth arguments that Macedonia had the historical right to call itself “Macedonia.” He tried his hand at catering, briefly cooked in a restaurant, and would happily spend a week building a red wine sauce for a holiday meal. He was eager to try new dishes, new restaurants, and fine wines. Among memorable meals, his Christmas menus were
wonderful. Dan played a vital role as a Dartmouth alum. He was pivotal in creating the Class of ‘62 Faculty Fellowship that funds untenured faculty to concentrate on their research. He moderated intellectual conversations and political debate fairly and with an even hand as
moderator of the listservs that link the Class ’62. He loved being a husband and father and being a grandfather. He was grateful for all the
love and support he received from loved ones and friends. Please join us for a Meeting for Worship in honor of Dan on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at
11:00 am, at Haddonfield Friends Meeting, 47 Friends Avenue, Haddonfield, NJ, 08033. Parking is available but limited at the Meetinghouse. Additional parking is available on Lake Street. We ask those who are able to walk a few blocks to instead use the parking lot behind Haddonfield Borough Hall, 242 Kings Highway East, Haddonfield For those who wish to donate in honor of Dan, we ask that you contribute to the charity of
your choice.

CAPT. DAVID BRANT MCGUIGAN USN(RET) - December 01, 1932 - January 31, 2023

Departed: 01/31/2023 (Haddonfield)
Obituary Preview: Captain David Brant McGuigan, USN (retired) December 1, 1932 - January 31, 2023 David Brant McGuigan, a decorated veteran and native Philadelphian, lived a life of service to family, God, and country. A deeply religious and conscientious man, his untiring devotion to whatever cause he championed impressed all those who knew “the Captain.”
David attended Saint Stanislas Elementary School and Southeast Catholic High School in South Philadelphia.
In 1948, David found excuses to hang out at a Second Street shoe store operated by Uncle Bill where 14-year-old Kathleen Cosgrove worked, thus beginning a 75-year love affair. On June 8, 1957, David married the love of his life, Koshie, and so began their 65-year union. Through a life filled overwhelmingly with love, the pair became the inseparable Kosh and Dave. They were blessed with four children, David Jr, Francis, Kathleen, and Paul.
During 27 years of service to the United States Navy, David distinguished himself as a submariner, engineer, and inspirational leader. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy with distinction in 1957 and earned advanced naval engineering degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As a lieutenant, he served aboard the USS Albacore (AGSS-569), an experimental submarine. In 1972, he volunteered for duty as a Senior Naval Advisor to the Republic of South Vietnam. He was the Repair Officer on the submarine tender USS Holland (AS-32). His final tour was as Commanding Officer of Naval Ship Systems Engineering Station in Philadelphia. He guided its evolution into the engineering and economic engine it is today.
His worldwide exploits earned him numerous military decorations including the Legion of Merit; Bronze Star for Combat Valor; Navy Commendation Medal; Military Star of Merit (Republic of Chile); the Armed Forces Honor Medal, First Class; and the Cross of Gallantry (Republic of Vietnam).
David left naval service in 1984 and worked as Executive Vice President at NDI Systems Engineering Company and Corporate Technical Director at QED System. However, a part of “The Captain” never left the Navy. As president of the Home Port Alliance, he spearheaded the initiative to establish a battleship New Jersey WWII memorial and ship museum on the banks of the Delaware River with the goal of revitalizing the city of Camden. So, the Jersey (BB-62) sailed to Camden, where she now rests, the most decorated battleship in United States history. In 1990, he collected another degree, graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in geology.
In retirement, David directed his energy to a variety of intellectual pursuits and served as sage and mentor to an ever-expanding family. He expounded on any and every subject, sometimes in earnest, but more often in jest, and always with a staggering breadth of knowledge and boundless curiosity. At times he retreated to his captain’s quarters, researching, and writing on diverse topics including the Greek resistance in WWII, Ernest Hemingway, and Marguerite Duras. “The Captain” most often expressed himself by doing for others. Whatever the occasion or crisis he was always there.
David will be remembered by all who knew him for his roguish wit, razor-sharp mind, and notorious sweet tooth. David is survived by his wife Kathleen; their children and spouses, David and Valerie, Francis, Paul and Michele, and his son-in-law Antonis Papadourakis (husband of his beloved daughter Kathleen who passed away in 2018 from ALS); his thirteen grandchildren (Manon, Shannon, Kieran, Grigorios, David, Antonis, Anlon, Louis, Brant, Andreas, Henri, Harrison, and Aidan); and three great-grandchildren (Evelyne, Claire, and Violet).

Are there any specific regulations around writing an obituary?
