Surrounded by her beloved family, the matriarch of the Hines Family was called to her eternal home on November 18, 2023. Neverseen K. Hines, affectionately known as Nev/Nebbie was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother that was born in Florence County on December 14, 1935. She was the baby girl and the last living sibling of 9 children of the late Sam Joe and Sarah Scipio Kennedy. EDUCATION
Neverseen received her primary education at Long Branch Elementary School in Effingham, SC. She attended Wilson High School in Florence, SC. As a young child, she harnessed a gift for doing hair. The passion then led her to begin taking cosmetology courses in high school. Upon graduating in 1954, she matriculated to Benedict College in Columbia, SC where she received a Bachelor of Elementary Education in 1958. Neverseen went on to teach at Marlboro County Elementary School in Bennettsville, SC for 6 years. COMMUNITY SERVICE/AFFILIATIONS
On August 6, 1960, Neverseen married the late Jesse Edison Hines, Sr., a union of 53 years. They were blessed and the proud parents of two children. After getting married and moving to Lamar, South Carolina, she continued to teach fifth grade and physical education at Spaulding Elementary School.
Neverseen had a full and rewarding experience teaching and shaping kids but becoming an entrepreneur, owner, and operator of a beauty salon was a lifelong dream come true. In 1966, she resigned from teaching to pursue her first love as a Cosmetologist in the opening of Hines Beauty Center where she was an amazing stylish/beautician for over 40 years.
As a businesswoman and community leader, Neverseen continued to participate on various community initiatives and organizations at the local, county and state level.
In keeping current with her trade, she was a member of the Darlington County Beauticians Association and was one of the founders and members of the Lee County Beauticians Association. Throughout her career, she was a recipient of many hair stylist awards. In addition to her outstanding career’s work, she was involved in various community services and organizations that included the NAACP, member of the Order of Eastern Star, Beacon Light Chapter #230, served on the Board of Deacons and Deaconesses, a founding member of the New Christian Fellowship Baptist Church in Effingham, South Carolina, member and co-founder of the African Violet Garden Club and board member for the Darlington County Council of Aging. Albertha Elizabeth McCullum - February 18, 1923 - February 22, 2022

Departed: 02/22/2022 (Lamar)
Obituary Preview: Albertha Elizabeth Lincoln McCullum was born on February 18, 1923, in Dorchester County, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Maggie and Eugene Lincoln. She was born the ninth child out of ten children. She received her formal education in Dorchester County, South Carolina. On February 22, 2022, God decided that her job here on earth had been completed. At a young age, she met and married Wesley “Dixie” McCullum. They would settle down in Lamar, South Carolina, where they raised their daughter Glenda “BaBa” McCullum Jenkins
.
“Bert” as she was affectionately known was a faithful and devoted member of John Wesley United Methodist Church for over 75 years. She served on the usher board as well as the women’s choir. Bert was also a faithful member of Faithful Workers Chapter #229 since its inception over 50 years ago. She was also a faithful member of the Independent Royal and Lady Knights for a number of years. For over 44 years, she worked in the Darlington County School System for 44 years as a cafeteria worker at Lamar High School.
My grandmother had several favorite hobbies that she enjoyed doing. Sewing was definitely her favorite. Growing up, I would remember her in the living room doing her sewing. She also enjoyed going to the Center every day to do some knitting as well. She would always knit me a blanket and I still have them. Ma also loved making her own peanut brittle as well as doing her puzzles books. Growing up, we would always make sure that on Saturday nights, we watched one of her favorite shows, The Golden Girls. We never missed an episode of Murder She Wrote or Columbo, along with other shows.
To know Bert was to love her. She never had a bad word to say about anyone. I saw her get mad or curse at anyone. No matter what your age was she would always show respect to you. My grandmother had a genuine and pure heart. She always made sure that my sister and I had what we needed. One of my fondest memories of my grandmother was when she had Rick call me after I got off work with a special request. She wanted me to stop and get her some Red Wine. I said, “Ma, why do you want wine,” she replied, “It’s good for my heart”. One of her favorite lines after talking to Rick and me was “that’s right”.
In 2019, Ma suffered her second stroke, in which she didn’t want to live with me in Baltimore and I certainly refused to her in a nursing home, but then out of nowhere an angel named Christine “Coolie” Brown stepped and agreed to take care of her without me even asking. Bert loved being in her company and vice versa. I guess my mother, Glenda really picked a good friend when she chose her. She would remain under Christine’s care until her death.
Bert was preceded in death by her late husband Wesley “Dixie” McCullum, her daughter, Glenda “BaBa” McCullum Jenkins, and granddaughter, Diane Coretha McCullum Williams, and nine siblings.
She leaves to cherish her memories include her granddaughter, La’Tonya (Rick) Michelle Wilson; two grandsons, Perryn N. Williams, and Ricky “RJ” Wilson, Jr.; one devoted and special friend/family member, Christine “Coolie” Brown and Mrs. Ethel Lee Bess; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Lawton Ravenell Byrd - April 14, 1927 - October 26, 2021

Departed: 10/26/2021 (Lamar)
Obituary Preview: Mr. Byrd was born in Lee County to Carrie Washington Byrd and Ravenell Lawton Byrd. The youngest of six (6) siblings, R. B. was raised on a farm owned by this father. His siblings: Otis, Marion (Punch), Magnolia, Ethelyn (Tut), and Phiphine all preceded him in death.
Mr. Byrd was a proud graduate of Butler High School, Class of 1944, and married Doris Jeffery immediately after graduating. This union was blessed with (2) children: Darnell and Ravenell. His son, Ravenell, predeceased him.
After sixteen (16) years of marriage, the couple divorced and after struggling to keep the farm productive, Mr. Byrd followed in the footsteps of his older siblings, Otis and Magnolia, and moved to Queens, New York where he lived and work for over 40 years. Mr. Byrd held several jobs, including stock clerk at the King Size Company. After falling in the stock room, he was offered a position in sales. He flourished in this role as he loved to wear nice clothes and became a top salesman, serving as store manager and area manager prior to his retirement. While living in New York, he married Mozelle Fox Wilson, who preceded him in death after 50 years of marriage. Following their respective retirement, they returned to Hartsville where Mr. Byrd worked part-time transporting cars around the state for various car dealers. He always prided himself in owning “nice cars” which he maintained in impeccable condition and this job afforded him the opportunity to drive different models around the state. During his travels, he discovered the town which bore the family name, Ravenell, and after being stranded on one of his trips, he reluctantly purchased a cell phone.
Mr. Byrd loved baseball and was an avid Braves and Yankees fan. He collected baseball paraphernalia and even in the state of dementia would tell his caretakers to find the baseball game. One of his nephews, Bernard Edwards, recalled sitting with his Uncle R.B. watching baseball games on Saturdays. Mr. Edwards said he did not know anything about the game of baseball but he reacted as Uncle R. B. reacted. Their bond grew over the years as Mr. Edwards thought of Mr. Byrd as a father figure. He supported the local teams in Lydia as one of his favorite nephews, Edgar Rivers, was an outstanding player. Most recently, he shared his love of baseball with his niece, Alma Bell Billups, who is an avid fan as well. She would spend time quizzing him about teams and sharing laughter about those “Mets”.
Though Mr. Byrd had a speech impediment as a child, he overcame this challenge and often delivered the morning message for annual Father’s Day programs at his local church homes, John Wesley and Sandy Grove UM Churches. Copies of those speeches and cherished cards were a part of his treasured documents. A man who spoke his mind, who could be stern and forceful, he never wavered in his belief that “save your money”. To this end, Mr. Byrd kept meticulous financial records, he maintained a safe in his home office and even had a banker’s lamp on his desk. In his belongings is a Single Entry Ledger from 1959. In another life, he would have made an excellent accountant.
