Joyce Ann Allison - December 06, 1930 - April 15, 2022

Departed: 04/15/2022 (Clarkesville)
Obituary Preview: Joyce Abernethy Allison, age 91, was received into the arms of Jesus on April 15, 2022, in the presence of family. Born on December 6th,1930, Joyce was the daughter of the late George D. Caraway and Mary Ford Caraway. Joyce was a graduate of Russell High School in East Point, Georgia, where she was a cheerleader and played basketball. Always one for a good conversation, Joyce was nicknamed “Jabbernethy” for her gift of gab. Known for her love of family, delicious southern cooking, faith in Jesus, infectious smile, and servant heart, Joyce truly brought joy to everyone she encountered.
Joyce was married to her high school sweetheart, the late Willard Robert “Bill” Allison for 51 years. The couple raised their family in East Point, Georgia, where they were active in their community and church, First Baptist East Point. They were avid fans of Georgia Bulldog football and had season tickets for many years. Joyce was a homemaker and then entered the workforce at Burke Marketing Research when her youngest daughters began high school. Her children recall that she would get up an hour earlier to pray and read scripture before her day started when she was working. She would mention by name all of her family and extended family. This faith discipline is something she maintained throughout her life. Joyce spent the latter part of her career at the Georgia dept of Labor where she retired at the age of 70. Joyce and Bill moved to the mountains of Northeast Georgia in 2001, where they continued to be active in the lives of their children and grandchildren as well as their church, Bethlehem Baptist. Joyce lived a life of service and taught her family that the best way to feel better when you are down is to do something for someone else. When her husband passed away in 2003, Joyce did just that. She served in her church and community as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, the local Soup Kitchen, MOPS Ministry, and made countless homemade meals for those in need.
Joyce loved her family and being “Gram” to her 9 grand-children and 9 great-grandchildren. She also treasured her relationship with her 4 sisters and spent hours talking and laughing with them on their many “sister’s weekends”. Joyce enjoyed reading, watching mysteries, the Atlanta Braves, checking the mail, any kind of dessert, and until this past winter, carried on her passion for walking every day; a habit that no doubt contributed to her longevity. Joyce was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be dearly missed. The last three years of her life were particularly blessed by the love she received from Grace and the caregeivers at Graceful Care in Clarkesville, Georgia.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Allison was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Homer. She is survived by her children, Ginny Allison of Cornelia, David Allison (Terri) of Peachtree City, Marty Thurmond (Alan) of Clarkesville, Nancy Dolph (David) of Clarkesville; grandchildren, Merideth Shaw and Matthew Burgess (Ginny), Josh and Justin Allison (Dave), Jake and Jonathan Thurmond (Marty), Lindsey Fine, Allison Cox and Katie Dolph (Nancy); and 9 great grandchildren; her sisters, Georgianna Toole (Barckley), Susan Hanson, Cindy Barry (Mack); brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bob and Anne Vansant; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, April 18, 2022 at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. Chip Cranford and Rev. Tommy Stowe officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, prior to the service on Monday from 11:00 AM until 12:15 PM, and again in the church fellowship hall following the interment in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Phoebe Jane Pierce Martin - February 08, 1942 - March 31, 2022

Departed: 03/31/2022 (Clarkesville)
Obituary Preview: Phoebe Jane Pierce Martin, 80, of Clarkesville, Georgia, went peacefully to be with our Heavenly Father on March 31, 2022. Born in Westerly, Rhode Island, Phoebe was the daughter of the late Raymond and Eleanor Pierce. When Phoebe was born, her 22-year-old sister and family lived in an apartment above her home, creating a beautiful sisterly bond that lasted until "Dori" passed away in 2015 at 97.
Phoebe spent her childhood growing up in Coral Gables, Miami, Florida, graduating from Coral Gables High School in 1960. Although Phoebe first met her beloved "Skeeter" as a child attending the Riveria Presbyterian Church in South Miami, their official love story began when she was 14. In a rush to become his bride, Phoebe graduated in just three years with a Bachelor of Arts and History from Queens College, and married John Marshall Martin, Jr. in the summer of 1963.
Having taught elementary school while John completed his Master's Degree, Phoebe was able to stay home with their adopted children, John and Suzanne, for eight years. After twelve years with General Electric and many moves around the country, Phoebe and John decided to settle down in one place. When considering where to establish roots, they remembered the little town of Clarkesville they had fallen in love with when attending a family friend's wedding at the First Presbyterian Church in 1958. This same Church she first visited as a 16-year-old would become her "church on the hill" for over 46 years.
In 1976, Phoebe and John arrived in Clarkesville, and Phoebe changed careers and entered the banking world with Habersham Bank. She organized their first Training Department, became their first female loan officer, and was named Vice President of their central office. Five years later, Phoebe became Assistant Vice President of Business and Staff Development at Community Bank & Trust, and in 1983 accepted an opportunity to join 1st Franklin Financial as their Investment Center and Marketing Director. Phoebe adored her 1st Franklin Financial family and would spend the last 22 years of her career helping expand the company in other states and eventually serving as their Executive Vice President of Human Resources. Professionally, she served as a member and President of the American Financial Services Associations Human Resource Committee.
Phoebe's servant heart led her to be involved in many service organizations. Serving as a long-time member and the first female President of the Rotary Club of Toccoa, where she was a Paul Harris Fellow and sustaining Will Watt Fellow, Phoebe also served as a Trustee of the Georgia Rotary Student Program (GRSP). GRSP excited Phoebe as it provided her and John the opportunity to host several international students over the years, solidifying her love for other nations and their people. She was a member and President of the Stephens County Chamber of Commerce Board, President of the Stephens County United Way Board, member and President of the Stephens County Literacy Foundation, member and President of the Foothills Counseling Board, member of the Juvenile Judges Citizen Review Panel, and member of the Department of Family and Children Services and Prevent Child Abuse Habersham Boards. In 1994, Queens College initiated an Outstanding Alumni Award and honored Phoebe as the first recipient, acknowledging her outstanding alumni service and contributions. After retiring in 2005, Phoebe spent most days volunteering at Circle of Hope, continuing her service with the agencies addressing child abuse and prevention, caring for her grandchildren, enjoying time with her Girls’ Night Out friends, and being a globe-trotter. She often shared that her best volunteer activity was being Nana to Ella Jane, Marshall, Jacob, Joshua, and Abigail Grace.
Phoebe loved her First Presbyterian Church family and actively served as a Sunday School teacher, Treasurer, Elder, and choir member. She was also a Moderator with the Northeast Georgia Presbytery. In 2010, the Church honored Phoebe with their Lifetime Achievement Award. Although honored for the recognition, in her written acknowledgment, she wanted her church family to know that she considered her most wonderful "Lifetime Achievement Awards" to be her two children, John and Suzanne. Anyone who knew Phoebe knew how proud she was that her children had chosen to serve others with their lives.
Phoebe could be described as a pioneer businesswoman who led by example, mentored many, and held many offices in civic and professional organizations. But the essential part of her life was her family. She adored her husband, children, five grandchildren, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, sister, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Phoebe devoted her life to being Skeeter's wife. Over the course of their 58-year marriage, Phoebe and John traveled the world, visiting over 31 countries. While the trips were for their enjoyment, Phoebe always had the attitude that she was a guest in the country and, more specifically, an ambassador for the United States. Phoebe was known to befriend everyone she encountered in their travels. She would always issue an invitation to their host to visit them in the US, and, on occasion, they did.
In 2008, Phoebe was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's. Two years later, she made the brave decision to share the news of her battle with others to be a beacon of hope and help those afflicted with the same disease. Throughout her 14-year battle, she believed that God gives us the grace to deal with tough situations, and with HIS help, HE sees us through.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Carlton Crabtree. Survivors include her husband, John Marshall Martin Jr., son and daughter-in-law John and Heather Martin, daughter and son-in-law Suzanne and Jason Dow, grandchildren Ella Jane Dow, Jacob Martin, Marshall Dow, Joshua Martin, and Abigail Grace Martin.

Janie Elizabeth Davis - December 17, 1958 - March 27, 2022

Departed: 03/27/2022 (Clarkesville)
Obituary Preview: On March 27, 2022, Janie Davis rested peacefully in the arms of Jesus as her battle with cancer ended.
Janie, born on December 17, 1958, lived her life as a true servant. A bold soul with a selfless heart, she was an avid adventurer and a seasoned traveler. She was the epitome of an independent woman: a seamstress and a baker, a relentless creative, and conveniently, a problem-solver who could figure out or fix most anything on-the-fly. Janie cared for others often and well, earning the nickname “Gypsy Nana” as she would quickly pack up and go wherever she was needed most. To know her was to love her, and the community she surrounded herself with is living proof.
Janie is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Brooke and Brian Buffington of Clarkesville, Georgia, and Bridgett and Shon Coleman of Warner Robins, Georgia; her grandchildren, Jet, Elle, Faythe, Cody, and Sadie Jo; her brothers Jeffrey and Joey, and her sister, Paula. She is preceded in death by her parents, Julean Tyre and Joseph Wilson Butler, Jr.
It seems quite fitting that Janie would be traveling through the state this week. . . The family will host a visitation in North Georgia at Hillside Memorial Chapel in Clarkesville on Tuesday, March 29th, from 5-7pm.
On Thursday, March 31st, the family will receive friends at Relihan Funeral Home in Pearson, Georgia, beginning at 1pm, followed by an outdoor service at Axson Cemetery (weather permitting) at 3pm.
In honor of Janie’s love for the beach, we encourage you to consider dressing as summery and beachy as you’d like for her service(s). If you would like to make a donation to Hospice of NGMC in lieu of flowers, we know she would deeply approve.

Marilyn Jordan Motz - February 05, 1941 - March 24, 2022

Departed: 03/24/2022 (Clarkesville)
Obituary Preview: Marilyn J. Motz  February 5, 1941 – March 24, 2022
Marilyn Motz lived an extraordinary and inspirational life.  She spent the vast majority of her 81 years in Habersham County. However, her extraordinary acts of service on behalf of abused children have positively affected thousands of child sexual abuse survivors and their families across the United States.
Marilyn was born in Baldwin, Georgia in 1941 to Marlow Jordan and Dolly Sigers Jordan.  She was loved and inspired by her mother.
Marilyn’s relationship with her two brothers and three sisters is a story of lifelong love, support, and trust that never faltered over the course of their lives.  She is preceded in death by her oldest sibling, Randall Jordan and by her youngest Sister, Gail Smith.  She is survived by two sisters, Carolyn Stewart, Shirley Meeks, and one brother, Donnie Jordan.
Much of Marilyn’s childhood was spent singing in churches across the state with her sisters.  They were known as the "Stardusters.” The sisters loved to sing and not only sang throughout their childhood years but also at every major family gathering for decades to come.  Their singing was a source of great happiness to their mother and stepfather, who they also adored, the Reverend E.L. Aiken.
Marilyn graduated from South Habersham High School in 1958.  She was a gifted singer, student, and athlete.  In 1960, Marilyn married Lane Wilbanks, now deceased.  She was totally devoted to her two children, Marlan Wilbanks and Marcia Hubbell.   Marilyn made her children her top priority.  They remained in the center of her life until the date of her passing.  Marcia and Marlan were a source of pride and comfort to her.
Marilyn loved being a mother and living in close contact with her family members.  As her siblings started their own families, the strong bonds that existed when they were children became even more tangible.  As the oldest sister, Marilyn took on the role of being not only an older sister but also a second mother to her family members. She was never too far away to show their families love and attention.
Marilyn pivoted from being an at-home mother to a career path that began in 1978.  She earned diplomas from the Art Institute of Atlanta and La Salle University in interior decorating.  Her ability and keen eye benefitted individuals and businesses throughout North Georgia.  She operated “Motz Interiors” from 1986 until 2000.
Marilyn was raised in Baldwin Baptist Church where she served faithfully for decades.  She was responsible for directing the summer vacation bible school program and was a Sunday School teacher adored by her classes.
On May 29, 1982, Marilyn’s life was changed in a wonderful way.  That was the day she married Aubrey Motz.  The 39 years that they spent together were surely the happiest of her life.  Everyone who knew them immediately saw their similarities.  They were devoted Christians, graceful servants to the needy, and precious sources of inspiration to all who knew them.  Aubrey’s two children, Aubrey Motz IV, deceased, and Mona Leigh Motz of Cocoa Beach, Florida were a welcome addition to her family.
Marilyn’s siblings, children, nieces and nephews thought they were special to her, and they were.  However, the bar that measured the love in her heart was raised high when her three grandchildren were born.  Blake Hubbell was her first grandchild.  He is the son of Marcia and her husband Paul Hubbell.  Marilyn often said that Paul was the perfect son-in-law.
Her second grandchild was Madie Taylor Wilbanks, now deceased.  Marlan and Madie spent many happy hours with her “Nana” and “Papa” at their house in Clarkesville.  The reunion that occurred on March 24 in heaven between those two had to be a glorious occasion.
When Marlan married Diane 20 years ago, Marilyn said she found the daughter-in-law she always wanted with an incredible bonus, her third grandchild.  From day one, she and Lauren developed their own strong relationship.  Lauren was a source of constant pride and pleasure for Nana and Papa.  On August 8, 2021, they gave Marilyn another gift in the form of her first great-grandchild.  Madison May Crites quickly became the apple of her eye.
The previous information about Marilyn’s love for God and family are important, but it truly is her impact on the world that identifies her as a hero and role model to so many. For the last 30 years of her life, Marilyn was a warrior in the fight against child sexual abuse.  She was able to overcome her childhood experiences in the most positive way possible.
She sought out and played an active role in Prevent Child Abuse Habersham (PCAH).  She started out as a volunteer and ultimately served as president of PCAH from 2002 to 2004.  Her energy and will to come to the aid of abused children was a major factor in the growth of PCAH from a small organization into the most active organization of its kind in the state of Georgia.  PCAH is now known as the Family Resource Center of Northeast Georgia.  Marilyn was fearless in acting as an advocate for children with teachers, social workers, DFCS, law enforcement officials, and community leaders in fighting child sexual abuse.  She has been recognized by community organizations such as the Rotary Club for her service to society and the community and was awarded the Jean Harris Award in 2007 and the Power of Prevention Award in 2011.
To focus on Marilyn’s lifelong contributions to Habersham County would greatly underestimate her legacy.  The courage she exhibited in disclosing her own story and leading the fight for other victims inspired efforts and organizations involved in serving victims of abuse across the state, the Southeast, and the entire United States.  Marilyn was the inspiration for the Wilbanks Child Endangerment and Sexual Exploitation (CEASE) Clinic. The CEASE Clinic was the first of its kind in the nation.  This Clinic is operated by the University of Georgia Law School and provides free legal services to victims of child sexual abuse and trafficking victims.
Additionally, Marilyn’s life story played a pivotal role in charitable organizations such as Voice Today, now Hope Thrives.  It is a Christ-centered organization Marilyn loved and supported along with her son.  This organization has helped thousands of victims in Georgia and seven other states.  It is expected the seed planted by Marilyn in Hope Thrives will ultimately result in tens of thousands of victims being helped in 26 different locations across the United States over the next decade.
Marilyn Testified to state Senators and Representatives to lobby for changes in the law to help sex abuse victims.  She was instrumental in the passage of new laws in Georgia created to give a voice to victims in the justice system.
She is survived by her husband, Aubrey Motz, children Marlan (Diane) Wilbanks, Marcia (Paul) Hubbell, step-daughter Mona (Mike) Motz, grandchildren Blake (Ana) Hubbell, Lauren (Mark) Crites, great-granddaughter Madison May Crites, siblings Carolyn (Milton) Stewart, Shirley (Arnold) Meeks, Donnie (Elizabeth) Jordan, 12 nieces and nephews and 22 great nieces and nephews.
If being a Christian means loving God, loving your neighbor, and helping the needy, then Marilyn is a role model for Christianity.  She turned tragedy into victory like very few people have done.
